DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT OF A WEB PORTAL USING HTML AND INTERNET TECHNOLOGIES
Purpose
To design a web portal for a business or organization with the use of Internet Technologies. Work in small groups (2 students) to design a web portal with specific functions. You may use FrontPage, Publisher, Dreamweaver or any other software or programming language you wish. Choose a topic related to business, mass communication, computing or any topics pertaining academic for your web portal. Each group have to submit a final report describing the portal content as well as the components of HTML and Internet technologies used in designing the web portal. The write-up should be between 12 and 15 pages (inclusive of the web portal screen captions) Submission date: 21 July 2011 (any submission after 21 July wont be entertained)

Project Requirements
Complete each of the requirements below. Please treat this guideline very seriously, as it will likely make or break your project Some task suggestions for each student in the class are: o o o o o o o o o o Form a group ( 2 members ) Development of web portal's structure Finalization of text/content and components of Internet to be used Developing any graphics related to the web portal Taking any pictures required for the web portal Formatting pictures in Photoshop (if required) Developing the various pages of the web portal Complete the final reports Publish the web portal Submit the web portal design in CD format ( 1 CD for each group)

You may follow some of the requirements directly in this project guideline. Some of the like the mission statement, goals, sketches, organizational chart and the timeline should also be included). The following requirements are suggested to be part of your final report: What is the name of the web portal? What is the web portal's purpose/mission statement (e.g., why does the client want a web portal and what purpose will it serve)? (Describe in the final report) y y Who is the author? Define the audience (young, mature, male, female, stockbroker, businessman, news subscribers, librarian, etc.). Who is your web portal being designed for? y y Set written goals for the web portal. (Described in the final report) What will be the organization of the web portal? Please show this graphically by including a "tree diagram/organizational chart" of the pages on the web portal (if required). Information on creating charts in Microsoft Office can be found at http://office.microsoft.com/enus/help/HA011588171033.aspx. You can also use http://www.easyorgchart.com/, a free Web based organization chart creation tool or http://my.lovelycharts.com/ which has a web portal map tool. y Pencil Sketch the layout of the web portal before you begin any coding. If you know Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Fireworks you could use one of those programs to create a web portal mockup. y How will be the web portal's navigational structure (e.g., common navigation bars, forward/back buttons, link to home on each page, etc?). How will they be styled? y What will be the web portal's content? Please include the proposed content for each page to be included in your web portal. . y What will be the web portal's graphical design? Please indicate any graphics that must be developed, etc. y What are the technology requirements? Will you be using straight XHTML and CSS? What new technology will you be learning and incorporating into this web portal. y How are you going to ensure web portal consistency? Think of such things as color, font, graphics, table usage etc. y Be sure to check your spelling and grammar!

y Marks are allocated with intense use of Internet components; i.e. media, widgets, flash animation and Web 2.0 components. This includes creating and linking to relevant social networks such as Flickr, Twitter, Facebook, Picasa, personal web sites or blogs that you have established or establish in conjunction with your web portal. y y Integration of scripting technology like ASP and PHP are encouraged. Usage of backend databases for information retrieval like mySQL is encouraged for comprehensive function of the web portal. y Portal content should be appropriate for class. Portal content will consist of a combination of written posts and information, images, video, audio, podcasts, RSS feeds and links to other relevant resources. y Designed web portal will be graded based on the quality and relevancy of the written and utilization of Internet technologies. Students should approach the project seriously, aiming to produce a professional quality repository of information on their chosen topic y The allocation of the project work is 50% ( with some percentage contributed from lab attendance and work) END OF GUIDELINE
