Description of Idea

The following are rules that physical educators have submitted =o PE Central. PE Central does not endorse or suggest using any of these =ules in your classroom. They are put forth so other teachers can see =hat others are using and therefore it may be helpful to use some of =hese ideas in your own classroom. It is best to formulate your own =ules and consequences based on your expectations, students, and situation. =e sincerely appreciate those who have submitted their ideas. PE Rules 2009 from our Classroom Management Managing Editor Ulrike =erstges (PDF) Rules

Move Under Control: not Bethesda, MD running into anyone or =nything. Get Equipment: one at a time, politely (explaining =nd demonstrating what politely means), and carefully. Reminder For Any Cue: "What am I looking for?" Always praise the students' good work as you help them at =he beginning of the year, and during periodical "refresher =ourses" (i.e., after holidays, other breaks, etc.). Wear gym shoes Respect your self and others Move carefully Larry Satchwell

Use equipment with care Try your hardest Be nice to each other Steve Arnold Westridge Elementary Lake Oswego, OR Listen and Do Hands off Be careful Peoria, IL On Whistle/Freeze Respect How the rules are used: During the first month of school, =ules are frequently reviewed. Students are asked to tell what the =ules are and what they mean. Rules are included on two tests for =-8 graders. When 4-8 graders violate the rules, they have a =aper to fill out explaining which rule they broke, why the rule is important, and how they will avoid violating the rule in the = future. We start out the year with the word RESPECT. We involve =tudents in a meaningful discussion related to each letter during the =irst week of school and also put the word in our newsletters and communications home. For years we used to list ten or more =ules -- this works much better and is very easy to remember. Rob Matthews Pleasant Valley School These rules are not originals. I got them from a book =urchased at a convention. I like them because they are short and =weet. In my 23 years of teaching elementary PE, I have found =hat pretty much everything can be handled within these two rules.

R.E.S.P.E.C.T. R - Right to learn E - Effort S - Safety P - Purpose E - Enthusiasm C - Challenge T - Trust/Team Building A - Act safely B - Be prepared and be positive.

We believe in using a few simple rules that can cover any = situation. These rules are sent to all parents at the =eginning of the school year.

* Yourself (By working hard and Central safely every day to =mprove your Elementary fitness level) School * Others (Always encourage, never put down) * Equipment (By using it for intended =urposes) Always try your best. If someone in class is having trouble, HELP instead of laughing. Chuck McNevich Carver Elementary Sedro-Wooley, WA

These are my posted rules. I haven't found anything I =ouldn't somehow relate to these rules.

The equipment belongs to all of us - let's take care of =t! Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself. When the teacher or your classmates are talking, you are not. Find a spot and get ready for activity. Be kind to others. Know when to talk. Participate for the entire activity. Follow all directions. Walk into the gym and sit on your number and listen for instructions Be kind and courteous to teammates and opponents Use words to discuss any disputes. If unsettled get the =eacher involved. Stop any activity when you hear the signal. Exit the gym from your number and be ready to resume =lassroom activity

Consequences to the violation of the rules: A violation of the above rules the student receives an =S", a warning. A second violation receives an "I" and the third =arrants a "T". SIT. The student will sit out of activity a certain =mount of time until they can verbalize to me how they will come back =o activity ready to learn. This is for one period of =nstruction. The letters are erased and the students starts over the next =eriod. I have these rules typed and if constant rule breaking =ontinues period after period, a note goes home with the rules listed. =he parents are asked to review with the student the rules, sign =he sheet and they then can come back to class. Actually the =arents receive a list of the rules and expectations at the =eginning of the year.

Kathy Houston [Report Abuse] Thursday, November 13, 2008 We, as educators must create our own classroom management =lan - sharing ideas does assist the guidance needed to CREATE. Be =afe, Be Respectful, Be here and Be ready are our school rules POSTED = everywhere and stated all the time. By working from that, =he kids are familar with them. The added twist of what they mean in =hysical Education and by adding Be fair is what creates a =ersonalized plan - with specific examples based on daily routine, procedures =nd activity from entrance to exit. I like the rules submitted by Steve Arnold, Kent =uelper, Mark Searles, and Millie. The rules are stated in simple but =lear language. The choice of words is perfect for P.E. For 11 =ears I have used very similar words: Be prepared, Follow =irections, Be Respectful, Be A Good Listener, and Have Fun!
