pilots, Captain Akihiro Namme and

Captain Keisuke Onozawa would easily
be confused as just any other Asian
tourist on the streets of Suva.
However, the two are in the country
working for the Japanese Embassy,
each given three terms to establish good
relationships with Fijis defence forces.
This is part of a Japanese Air Force
agreement where its oIfcers are posted
to its Foreign AIIairs oIfce to widen their
knowledge on international relations in
other countries.
Fiji is one of the seven countries in the
world in which the Japanese Air Force
oIfcers are temporarily transIerred to Ior
this assignment.
According to the two, they are not
only fortunate to have been given an
opportunity to broaden their knowledge,
but were pleased to have been chosen out
oI the 40.000 plus oIfcers in the Japanese
Air Force to come to Fiji.
Captain Onozawa who has just completed
his third term, says his experience in Fiji
has been a Iulflling one.
It has been the best experience, he said.
I was able to create good experiences
with those in the Fiji Police Force while
ensuring the safety of Japanese nationals
here, he said.
The 32-year-old has been serving as fghter
pilot for the past 10 years.
His job entails him to ensure the safety

Fijis Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama has urged Fijian soldiers to
take advantage of the opportunity from the
United Nations to increase the number of
RFMF peacekeepers in Iraq.
Let us continue to uplift and maintain the
standards of our peacekeeping operations
in Iraq, he said.
Speaking at the Infantry Day celebrations
at the Sukanaivalu Barracks in Labasa
Commodore Bainimarama said Fiji is
doing preparatory work for the deployment.
He reminded the soldiers to be strong,
courageous and not to be easily moved or
led astray.
I want to remind you of the need to focus
only on things that will help us build a better
Fiji, focus on unity and togetherness,
Commodore Bainimarama said.
He also reminded his men to keep in mind
the commanders intent and to always
remember his directives in every task they
carry out whether big or small.
PRODUCTS such as timber should be
branded and differentiated to give it
value, according to the Prime Minister,
Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama.
He said the Government was in the process
of registering suitable designation marks
for Fijian mahogany in Fiji as well as in
other countries where it is exported to.
A distinct sovereign brand will enable
the creation of a world class chain of
custody of Fijian mahogany and eliminate
any mixing of inferior quality mahogany,
thereby resulting in greater customer and
investor confidence, he said.
Commodore Bainimarama said the
Government and people would soon
own the sovereign trademark that would
be registered under the name, Fiji Pure
Mahogany and will be instrumental
in setting a new benchmark in the
certification of Fijian mahogany which
will be sold as a world class brand.
The Prime Minister also said the payment
of fees would enable brand access to
purchasers of Fijian mahogany from Fiji
Hardwood Corporation Limited.
The Commodore made the comments at
the recent issuing of a mahogany license
to Sustainable Mahogany Industries
Limited at the Government Buildings
in Suva.
Prime Minister Commodore Voreqe
Bainimarama says his government wants
empowerment and connectivity for all
Fijians.
And the launch of Vodafone Fiji 3G
network is one step of ensuring this.
Commodore Bainimaramas comments
came during the launch of Vodafone Fiji
3G network at Labasas Civic Centre with
more than 100 guests in attendance.
The advent of the 3G network in
parts of Vanua Levu and Taveuni will
make available new technology for
communications, education and business
transactions, he said.
Commodore Bainimarama said through
3G the subscriber would be able to
enjoy a wide range of content downloads
from videos to music, be able to use
video calling and experience fast mobile
broadband.
Live streaming of the news and sports
will now also be possible and at the same
time it helps connecting and empowering
people, he said. Commodore
Bainimarama said as earlier stated by
Attorney-General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum,
the Governments various incentives not
only created a liberalized and competitive
telecommunications market but also
made the availability of new equipment
accessible to all.
Relevant to this instance is the reduction
of duty on smart phones which will
through 3G give access to internet
services, Commodore Bainimarama said.
I will later this year launch
the countrys first national
broadband policy, he said.
Commodore Bainimarama
said it was therefore fitting
that capacities are created,
an example of which is
Vodafones 3G network
expansion to Vanua Levu,
prior to the launch of
the broadband policy to
provide that trajectory
To make Fiji a knowledge-
based country to improve
our human resources and
its quality, it is imperative
that telecommunications
companies play a leading
role by increasing
their network coverage
throughout Fiji and at the
same time facilitating the
uptake off technology,
he said.
Commodore Bainimarama
said after all if all of Fiji was
networked and had modern technology
available to all Fijians, then the discovery
of new talents, a better educated society,
increase in Gross Domestic Product
(GDP), and increase in employment will
be inevitable.
I congratulate Vodafone and the team in
helping realize and unleash the potential
of the Northern Division, he said.
Vodafone Fiji Limited managing director,
Aslam Khan said the 3G launch in North
was more spectacular than their launch in
Viti Levu.
This is our way of showing to the
Northerners that we regard the North and
our northern clients no different to those
in Viti Levu, Mr Khan said.
He said Vodafone had spent $20 million in
setting up nine 3G base stations in North,
five in Labasa and four in Savusavu.
oIfcers on peace-keeping duties.
He was also assigned to transport Fijian
troops on peace keeping mission to Iraq
between 2007 and 2008.
I was privileged to have been the one to
fy the Fiiian troops Irom Iraq to Kuwait.
'Fiiian military oIfcers are strong and
tough and being part of this mission gave
me a sense of closeness to the people and
Fiji, he said.
'I`m glad to be fnally here and would
love to travel and know more about the
country.

Ministry officials and these things
normally take some time.
Whether Justice will turn this around
in the required time frame is a matter for
them, he added. Im not asking them to
speed it up or slow it down.
It is theoretically possible Mara could
make the trip before any decision is taken
on his case. McCully said latest advice
was he was due in the first week of July.
The extradition demand was being treated
as a normal request.
First of all we will look to ensure it is
a valid extradition request that relates to
an offence that is extraditable under New
Zealand law. Then they will look at the
merits of this particular case. Then Ill
guess theyll look at questions like will
the man get a fair trial, if hes returned;
are there human rights issues?
As a member of the Fijian military regime,
Colonel Mara is on a list of people banned
from entering New Zealand.
The New Zealand Government is playing a
balancing game by trying to support attempts
to restore democracy in Fiji but not fuel the
already tense relationship between Fiji and
Tonga caused by a long-term spat over the
Minerva reef, claimed by both countries.
Prime Minister John Key is in Canberra
and discussed Colonel Maras plight with
Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.
While Australia has removed Colonel Mara
permanently from its travel ban list, Mr Key
said it supported New Zealands approach.
Fijis military regime has demanded New
Zealand extradite runaway former Fijian
army Chief Tevita Mara if he steps on
New Zealand soil.
Foreign Minister Murray McCully
confirmed the Government was served
with papers on Friday.
My office has received a dossier of
documents which purport to be extradition
proceedings for Colonel Mara. We have
handed them across to the Ministry of
Justice which is the first step that should
be taken in such a case.
The ministry would advise the next step
and it would not be appropriate for him to
comment further, Mr McCully said.
Colonel Mara fled to Tonga in May after
being charged with plotting to overthrow
Fijis military government.
Fiji has unsuccessfully sought his
extradition from Tonga and Australia
where he spent several days recently.
Colonel Mara is now back in Tonga but
has signaled his intention to come to
New Zealand to discuss the situation in
Fiji with New Zealand officials. He is
expected there in the next few weeks.
He had been in Australia for just over
a week and has been granted a travel
exemption allowing him to come to New
Zealand for two days.
McCully said Colonel Mara could come
and go from New Zealand before any
decision is made on extradition.
The case was in the hands of Justice

BANK of South Pacific now offers
the lowest home loan interest rate in
the market.
The company announced a reduction
in the first year fixed interest rates on
home loans.
The new rates are 5.95 per annum for
personal home loans and 6.45 per cent for
investment residential home loans and are
effective immediately.
The new interest rates on our personal
and investment housing loans will
reinvigorate the home ownership
market and improve the ability of the
people of Fiji to own homes under the
prevailing economic climate, said
Kevin McCarthy, country manager
BSP Fiji.
Our processing time of 24 hours on
completed applications allows customers
to know about their loans quickly,
he said.
Our best rates and fast processing times
have seen us grow to be the market leader
in the home loans sector.
Our focus is to provide convenient
banking solutions to our customers and
the new first year fixed rate on home
loans will keep us competitive.
The announcement comes as the
financial sector battles excessive
liquidity.
The Reserve Bank of Fiji Governor,
Barry Whiteside, last week raised his
concerns on the $559 million that is
presently in the system.
He urged financial institutions to come
up with innovative products to reduce
the liquidity levels.

The United States of America officially
opened its new headquarters in Tamavua,
Suva.
The building, known as the biggest embassy
complex in the Pacific, was opened by US
ambassador to the Pacific Steven McGann.
Four years since it broke ground on June
9th 2007, this New Embassy Compound
has become a symbol of our presence and
dedication in the Pacific Island region.
Designed to reflect the aesthetic beauty of
the region, this New Embassy is a fitting
testament to the warm relationship between
the people of the United States and those of
Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, Tonga and Tuvalu.
The largest United States mission among
Pacific Island countries, this facility
is an example of Americas expanding
commitment to the Pacific Region,
McGann said.
He says the new embassy will continue to
serve U.S. interests in Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru,
Tonga and Tuvalu, and will have consular
responsibilities for New Caledonia, French
Polynesia, and Wallis and Futuna, covering
an area spanning 20 million square
kilometers.
Protecting and assisting American
citizens is the highest priority of every U.S.
mission. Over 150,000 Americans visit

Embassy Suvas consular district annually.
This new embassy compound enhances
our ability to deliver service to United
States citizens who travel to Fiji, as well as
citizens from Fiji and other nations seeking
to travel to the United States of America.
McGann estimated that the economic
impact of the project to Fijis economy
exceeds 50 million dollars.
At the peak of construction, more than
500 local workers were employed at the
project site, representing over two dozen
local subcontractors and suppliers, he
added.

A former Fiji military officer Lieutenant
Colonel Ratu Tevita Mara is planning to
take his campaign against the Fiji regime
to the United States.
The former regime insider says hell travel
to the US after visiting New Zealand and
Samoa.
Sally Round reports.
The former high-ranking military chief
fled from Fiji last month after being
charged with sedition and he was in
Australia speaking to groups fighting for a
return to democracy in Fiji. Colonel Mara
plans to use the open-ended three day
visa hes been granted for New Zealand,
next week. He then plans to visit Samoa,
whose Prime Minister has congratulated
Colonel Mara for admitting his guilt over
his involvement in the 2006 military coup.
Fijis interim Attorney-General has said
extradition papers will be filed in every
country the colonel visits. New Zealands
Justice Ministrys confirmed its received
an extradition request from Fiji and its
seeking legal advice. The Ministry says
there are a number of steps in the legal
process before any extradition request
could be met.
Passports are now being issued by the
Department of Immigration after the
arrival of 17,500 new books.
Director of Immigration Major Nemani
Vuniwaqa said that people who have
paid $190 for urgent application have
been among the first to receive their new
passport and will continue to be their
Members of the Fiji National Provident
Fund who are planning to migrate will
soon be able to decide whether they want
to take the lump sum out from their account
or receive a pension when they turn 55.
The Chief Investment Officer of FNPF,
Jaoji Koroi while addressing people at
the Public consultation forum on FNPFs
proposed review on the Pension Scheme
and FNPF Act said currently a member has
only the option of taking out the lump sum
from his account if he is migrating.
The other proposal includes the
requirement for FNPF members to go into
the compulsory pension scheme rather
than taking out the lump sum when they
retire.
The issue is being discussed due to
information received by FNPF that many
FNPF members who withdraw the lump
sum end up spending all the money and
then apply for Family Assistance through
the Social Welfare Ministry.
A major change is the proposed reduction
in the pension rate from 15 percent to
around 9 percent.
The proposed reforms are expected to be
implemented in phases from July 1st.
Security of tourists and the villagers in the

Saukuru said with the presence of Police,
the overseas visitors will be in safe hands
as more tourists choose Yasawa as their
holiday destination.
The Commissioner of Police, Brigadier
Iowane Naivalurua will open the new
Police post after the Ba Provincial council
gave the green light and also donated

Vuniwaqa is warning people to wait for

AIR PACIFIC RESUMES FLIGHTS
International carrier Air Pacific is
monitoring the volcanic ash cloud over
Australian airspace which has led to
numerous flights by other major airlines
being cancelled. But it says it will continue
operations as normal until such time that it
becomes unfeasible.
Tuesday's Air Pacific service to Sydney
operated normally and Monday's
Melbourne flight had also departed, Air
Pacific spokesman Samisoni Pareti said.
And Sydney's flights are scheduled for
normal operations, although our Flight
Operation team is monitoring the volcanic
ash cloud over east Australia.
If theres going to be any change in any
of our flights to Australia, we will inform
customers accordingly.
The media reported that the volcanic ash
cloud continued to disrupt flights, with
Qantas cancelling services in and out of
Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra.
Qantas said all other domestic flights
would operate normally, while
international services arriving into
Sydney and Melbourne, including from
New Zealand, would be delayed.
For Sydney, all domestic Qantas and
Jetstar flights to and from the city were
suspended.
All Virgin flights from 4pm were also
cancelled.
Qantas said it was reviewing its
international flights to and from Sydney.
Four flights departing Sydney and bound
for London and Frankfurt via Bangkok and
Singapore were rescheduled for departure.
Flight QF32 from Singapore to Sydney
was diverted to Brisbane.
All Jetstar flights arriving and departing
Newcastle have also been cancelled from
3pm. Virgins Newcastle flights were
suspended from 4pm.
Tiger Airways has grounded its entire
fleet in Australia.
Passengers were urged to stay in touch
with their airlines.
Qantas spokeswoman Olivia Wirth
said: We simply dont have enough
information and it will be safety before
schedule.
We dont know the density [of the cloud].
... The Qantas group will not be flying or
around the particular cloud.
Customers are advised not travel to the
airport if their flight has been cancelled.
A fare waiver is in place and full details
can be accessed on qantas.com, Qantas
added in a statement.
Air services Australia said significant
nationwide flow-on delays were
expected. It added that flights from Perth
heading towards south-eastern Australia
would be affected and advised passengers
to contact their airlines directly.
The Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre in
Darwin said the cloud crossed the South
Australian coast and then the southern
NSW coast.
Earlier the plume was 2000 kilometers
south-west of Western Australia but was
moving rapidly at 80 to 100 knots.
It was predicted to run into a strong low-
pressure system in the Great Australian
Bight, which would drag it northwards,
the ash advisory centres director, Andrew
Tupper, said.
Chiles Puyehue-Cordon Caulle volcano
began erupting on June 4, shooting a
plume of ash into the air which made its
way across the Atlantic and Indian oceans
before reaching Australian and New
Zealand airspace.
The air cloud has travelled around Earth
one-and-a-half times and is particularly
persistent in the atmosphere, Air services
Australia said.
Last week, almost 100,000 people and
700 flights were affected by the ash plume
over six days of air chaos spanning from
Perth to New Zealand. Mr Tupper said as
the plume was a rare occurrence, a third
loop back to Australia was not likely.
A third time round would be
unprecedented, he told Agence France-
Presse, adding that it was a testing time
for airlines.
It is a very complex problem for the
airlines to manage. Obviously they have
to take a conservative approach.
In May, the Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland
erupted, disrupting flights in some parts of
northern Europe.
In April last year, the eruption of a volcano
under the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, also in
Iceland, sent plumes of ash kilometers
into the atmosphere and severely affected
air travel.
Ash poses a significant threat to aircraft
because once sucked into engines it can
be converted into molten glass, as a result
of the high temperatures, and potentially
causes an engine to fail.

AFTAAB Khan wants to work with figures
when he grows up.
His enthusiasm for numbers and solving
mathematical problems saw the 11-year-
old Nadi Muslim Primary School student
snatch the top prize in last year's Maths
Written Quiz organised by the Fiji Maths
Association.
"Maybe I can become an accountant or a
Maths tutor after I complete school, as
long as I can work with numbers I'll be
happy," the Class Six student said.
Aftaab received a certificate of excellence
and $20 in prize-money at an awards
ceremony held at Natabua High School.
"The school is very proud of his
achievement and I would also like to
acknowledge the efforts by his teachers,
trainers, mentors and parents," said head
teacher, Mohammed Ali.
"We encourage anyone who shows
enthusiasm in a particular field whether it's
in sports, in the classroom or if it is in the
field of arts," he said.

The Fiji National Provident Fund has
provided the government with $1.97
billion so far.
Chief Investment Officer of FNPF Jaoji
Koroi said that a lot of concern has been
raised about this investment.
He said in accordance to FNPFs policy
statement, it is high; however unfortunately
there are very limited investment
opportunities in Fiji.
Koroi added that this investment is done
through commercial banks and is not an
investment done overnight.
He said it reflects the funding of the
Governments deficit over the years as the
government runs on a deficit and needs to
be funded.
He said it is an accumulation of funding
overtime and government has never
defaulted on this obligation.
He confirmed that the government is
charged 7.2% interest on the bond.

THE Government has removed all forms
of discrimination in respect of access and
selection in schools.
The move would provide every child free
and equal opportunity in the school system.
The statement was made by Education
and Labour Minister Filipe Bole to the
100th session of the International Labour
Conference in Geneva, Switzerland, earlier
this week.
He said his ministry had maintained
fee-free education in the first 13 years
of primary and five years of secondary
education, abolished external examinations
in primary and lower secondary schools

will come back to Fiji.
Several entertainment agencies and media

Upon arrival, they will undergo in-country

This is the second sugar mill to kick off

Khan says the stoppage is to allow for
further adjustments to be carried out at the

We are not gathered here simply to

A US man was critically injured when he
laid down in front of a car to prevent his
girlfriend from driving away.
Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman
Sergeant Kim Montes said Joel Santos, 25,
got into an argument with his girlfriend,
26-year-old Gloribeth Santiago, at a
condominium complex in Orlando. After the
argument, she got into a car with her cousin,
Christina Santiago, and attempted to leave.
When the two women pulled out of the
complex's parking lot, they felt something
under the car's front tires, Sergeant Montes
said. They stopped the car and found Santos
pinned under the tires and unconscious.
Sergeant Montes said the women did not
intentionally run over Mr Santos. "They
thought he had moved but he laid down on
the ground," she said. Upon discovering Mr
Santos, they immediately called emergency
services.
Emergency crews used a jack to lift the car
and free Mr Santos. He was taken to a local
hospital in critical condition.
Troopers who responded to the scene said
Mr Santos was under the influence of
alcohol at the time of the incident.
Authorities were investigating the incident.
It was not immediately known if anyone
would face charges.

A woman has been gang raped and burnt
alive in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh,
police say, and the latest in a series of
brutal but unrelated attacks on women
there.
The woman's family says five men gang-
raped her and then set her alight in her own
home in Etah district.
In the past week there have been three
violent attacks on women in the state.
Correspondents say Uttar Pradesh is one of
India's most lawless states where women
are accorded a very low status.
On Friday a 14-year-old girl was stabbed
in the eye as she fought off two men who
attempted to rape her.
The teenager was attacked in Gadwa
Buzurg village in the Kannauj district of
the northern state. She lost one eye and the
other was also seriously damaged.
Police say the attackers were from her own
village. Only one has been arrested so far
and police said they were looking for the
second man.
Two policemen in the area, who initially
refused to lodge the parents' complaint,
have been suspended.
Last week, a girl's body was found
hanging from a tree on police premises in
the Nighasan area of Lakhimpur district.
The girl's parents alleged that she was
raped and murdered and that the police
had offered them a bribe to keep quiet.
In the latest incident the woman, who
was in her thirties, was sitting outside her
home when five men dragged her inside
the house and gang-raped her, according to
her family.
Her family says the attackers sprinkled
kerosene on her and set her on fire because
the woman had recognised them and they
were afraid of being caught.
The woman managed to give a statement
to police but died shortly afterwards.
Police say they are still looking for the
attackers.
Earlier this year, the head of the National
Commission for Women, Girija Vyas, said
Uttar Pradesh was at the top of the list
when it came to violent crimes against
women.
State authorities have been criticized
in recent years after several attacks on
women and girls were reported.

Pakistani police say they have detained
an eight-year-old schoolgirl allegedly
strapped with a bomb and told to blow
up a police checkpoint in the country's
troubled northwest.
Although her intentions
could not be confirmed
independently, it was the
first time such a young girl
has been reported carrying
explosives in Pakistan and
could signal a disturbing
new tactic for the Taliban
and other militants.
She was arrested about 50
meters from the Islam Darra
police checkpoint on the
outskirts of Taimargara, the
main town in the district of
Lower Dir, where Pakistan
in 2009 fought to put down
a Taliban insurgency.
Police said the girl claimed
to have been abducted
several days ago in the
main northwestern city of
Peshawar and to have been
taken to Lower Dir near the
Afghan border.
"She was wearing eight
kilograms of explosives
which was quite heavy
for her age. Her body language was
suspicious," Qazi Jamil-ur-Rehman, the
regional police chief said.
"She is an innocent schoolgirl and was
scared. She is with us and we are trying to
reach her family," Mr Rehman added.
The girl appeared on national television
wearing her blue and white school
uniform.
"They kept me in a house and they told
me to push the button when I reach near
policemen," she told reporters during a
press conference.
Police said they were hunting those
responsible.
Suicide attacks carried out by women
and children are very rare in Pakistan
but militant groups have frequently used
teenage boys.
On December 26, 2010, a burqa-clad
female suicide bomber struck a UN food
distribution point and killed 43 people in
Khar, the main town in the restive Bajaur
tribal region bordering Afghanistan.
Nearly 4500 people have been killed across
Pakistan in attacks blamed on Taliban and
other Islamist extremist networks based
in the tribal belt since government troops
stormed a radical mosque in Islamabad
in 2007.

Democrat Anthony Weiner Monday
formally submitted his letter of resignation
from the House of Representatives,
effective at midnight Tuesday.
Under pressure from President Barack
Obama and other fellow Democrats,
Weiner announced his resignation last
week after being ensnared in an Internet
sex scandal in which he sent lewd photos
of himself to women online.
Once seen as a rising liberal star and likely
future candidate for mayor of New York
City, Weiner, 46, stood alone last Thursday
when he announced he would leave
Congress. His wife is a longtime aide to
Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Weiners two-sentence letter of resignation
was addressed to New York Governor
Andrew Cuomo, who will call a special
election to replace the seven-term
congressman.
In his letter, Weiner made no mention of
the scandal that forced him from office.
Instead he simply wrote: I hereby resign as
a member of the House of Representatives
for New Yorks Ninth Congressional
District, effective at midnight, Tuesday,
June 21, 2011. Its been an honor to serve
the people of Queens and Brooklyn.
Weiner, 46, represented parts of New York
City in the House since being first elected
in 1998.
Democrats feared that Weiner had become
a political liability to their efforts to win
back the House from Republicans in next
years elections.
Weiner is the third member of the U.S.
Congress to step down this year in sex

rise apartment left him wedged behind a
seventh-floor air conditioner.
Incredibly, the three-year-old's fall from
the eighth floor was broken by the air
conditioning unit, which left him trapped
and dangling seven floors from the ground.
Hearing his desperate screams and seeing
him start to slip; residents of the Beijing
apartment block staged a daring rescue to
free the trapped child.
The media reports the boy's saviors, Mr
Wang and Mr Zhou, risked their lives to
grab the boy's arm in the nick of time.
A passing witness told the reporter he
suddenly heard screaming and when he
looked up he saw a kid was stuck behind
an air conditioner while his legs were
dangling in the air.
Neighbours risk their lives to save the three-year-old boy who fell and became stuck
between the building wall and an air-conditioning unit.
Rescuers grab the boy, who had become wedged behind a seventh-floor air conditioner.
A JAPANESE machine has become the
fastest supercomputer in the world, making
calculations three times faster than a Chinese
rival, its developers say.
The K Computer, developed by Fujitsu Ltd
and the state-funded RIKEN institute of
physical and chemical research, has achieved
8.162 quadrillion calculations per second
(petaflops), they said.
One quadrillion is made up of a thousand
trillions.
It overtook Chinas Tianhe-1A of the
National Supercomputing Centre in Tianjin,
which became the world number-one in
November and is capable of operating at 2.6
petaflops.
The K Computers performance was
recognised by the authoritative biannual
Top500 List of Supercomputers released
on Monday at the 2011 International
Supercomputing Conference in Hamburg,
Germany. Fujitsu and RIKEN said.
It was the first time since 2004 that a
supercomputer built in Japan has claimed
the top spot. NECs Earth Simulator reigned
supreme from June 2002 to November 2004.
The machine is still being configured and
has been assembled since October 2010
at the RIKEN Advanced Institute for
Computational Science in Kobe, western
Japan. It is targeted to be completed by June
2012, the statement said.
It is made up of 672 computer cabinets
equipped with a current total of 68,544
CPUs, Fujitsu and RIKEN said in a press
release.
Use of the K computer is expected to have
a groundbreaking impact in fields ranging
from global climate research, meteorology,
disaster prevention, and medicine, thereby
contributing to the creation of a prosperous
and secure society, it added.
Fujitsu and RIKEN chiefs said the project had
overcome difficulties posed by the March 11
earthquake and tsunami that devastated the
countrys northeast Tohoku region.
Fujitsu chairman Michiyoshi Mazuka
said he was grateful to our partners in the
Tohoku region for their commitment to
delivering a steady supply of components,
even though they themselves were affected
by the disaster.
RIKEN president Ryoji Noyori said: I
very much believe that the strength and
perseverance that was demonstrated during
this project will also make possible the
recovery of the devastated Tohoku region.

Money scam ...
Ahsan Ali Syed, left, and Keith Johnson.
World News
AHSAN ALI SYED had all the trappings
of wealth: the monogrammed private jet,
a European football club, a retinue of
minders and the obligatory bling lots
of it.
But now, thanks to some angry Australian
victims, the net is closing on the man
described as the Bernie Madoff of India.
Over the past year the Indian-born Mr
Ali. 39. has scammed an estimated $100
million from Australian investors alone.
With other victims in England, Ireland,
Malaysia and, most recently Korea,
authorities have no idea how big Mr Alis
fraud might be.
The scam is simple. Through his company,
Western Gulf Advisory, which has offices
in Bahrain and Switzerland, Mr Ali offers
to lend troubled businesses up to $US200
million ($190 million) Irom his own
personal fortune, which he claims to be
$US8 billion.
This is itself incredible since only six
years earlier Mr Ali departed London in
a hurry leaving behind a grubby flat and
owing thousands of pounds in unpaid rent
and council taxes.
There can be no doubt that WGA is a
fraud, Andy Bryce, a solicitor from
Melbourne law firm Evans Ellis, said.
Victims unite in bid

Mr Bryce is acting for up to a dozen
WGA victims who have been defrauded
oI $30 million by WGA. `We are
looking at our legal remedies both here
and internationally, the solicitor, whose
victims come from every state and were
involved in a wide range of industries,
said.
Last Friday Keith Johnson, one of NSWs
biggest land developers, obtained a court
order freezing WGAs bank accounts
in Bahrain.
Mr Johnson was one of many who saw the
ads WGA ran in the Australian business
press. Favourable stories followed about
a Newcastle company so happy with its
Iirst $US200 million loan; it said it was
after a second.
The media has since revealed that no
money was ever received and that one of
the directors of that company was Sydney
lawyer John Mulally, who happens to be
WGAs lawyer in Australia.
Mr Johnson paid a $3.8 million
establishment fee to secure a desperately
needed $150 million loan. which never
materialized. He is now struggling to
refinance his development company
which was hoping to develop 10,000
housing blocks around the central coast
and Hunter area.
Mr Johnsons injunction preventing WGA
from accessing its Bahraini bank accounts
will not be good news to Spanish football
officials. Earlier this year, Mr Ali was the
white knight riding to the financial rescue
of first division team Racing Santander.
But as of last week the club was in crisis.
Not only had debts not been paid but its
coach quit, taking a much-publicized
swipe at Mr Ali on the way. Angry
players. who are owed $2.3 million. are
threatening to follow suit.

Rescuers used an inflatable mattress to
free a five-year-old Chinese boy who
became stuck between two walls.
A five-year-old boy found himself stuck
between a rock and a hard place literally
when he became trapped between two
walls only 20 centimeters wide in northern
China.
Xiao Yu was playing between the gaps
of two walls, which were narrower at
one end, when he became stuck between
them in the Jiajie village
of Taiyuan City in Shanxi
Province, the Chinese state
broadcaster said.
The young boy was unable
to move his head and was
crying in pain and fear.
His parents and neighbours
tried in vain to help him
out, but failed, and turned to
local firefighters for help.
The firefighters rubbed
his body with lubricant to
protect him from scratches,
before slowly inflating a
heavy-duty mattress to
widen the gap between the
walls.
"We should inflate the
mattress slowly, instead of
widening the gap too fast,"
a firefighter told the reporter.
"Slow down, boy, don't look
at me. Listen to what uncle tells you. When
you are told to back off, you must do it
slowly, don't go forward."
After an hour, the wall was widened by a
fraction and Xiao Yu was finally able to
move his head.
"Great, son. You're so great, my son. Right,
back off, and come to mum," his mother
said.
The boy was eventually able to inch himself
out and into the arms of his relieved family.

Robin Corrente, 50, claims the underwire in

in August 2008, causing third-degree burns
and blistering after about an hour in the sun.
Corrente reportedly sought medical attention

A set of Adolf Hitlers drinking glasses
is expected to Ietch $16.000 when it`s
auctioned off, reports Britains Daily Mail.
The four goblets are edged in gold and
etched with the Nazi eagle, a swastika and
the initials A.H.
They are believed to have been found in
the Berlin bunker where the Fuhrer spent
his final inglorious days.
Auctioneer Jonathan Humbert, of JP
Humbert, told the newspaper: There is
every chance that Adolf Hitler himself
sipped from these very glasses.
The auction house acquired them from a
collector who also owned Hitlers sword,
and so believes the glasses are authentic.

The federal government now has the legal
power to pull unsafe products off store
shelves.
In the past, the government could only
request action from producers but it
didnt have the authority to yank products
off the market.
Canadas Consumer Product Safety
Act was deemed law a year ago but it
officially took effect Monday.
The act replaces 40-year old legislation
and can be applied to toys, sports
equipment, cribs and some household
goods.
Industry suppliers must now report
incidents or deaths related to their
product, according to the law.
The government says the new powers
will help reduce the number of unsafe
or potentially risky products on the
Canadian market.

A 10-year-old boy was holding a loaded
shotgun when it accidently discharged,
killing a 17-year-old teenager on Thursday,
according to RCMP in Cranbrook, B.C.
Police said 6 teens were hanging out in a
house when they started fooling around
with a shotgun owned by one of their
parents. The gun went off, hitting Michael
Voth, 17, who was pronounced dead at the
scene, said police.
The police investigation, to date,
indicates that the shooting was an accident.
A 10-year-old child was able to access a
loaded shotgun, which discharged while
he held it in his hands, said a statement
released by Cpl. Chris Faulkner.
Under the Criminal Code of Canada, there
are no provisions for a child under the age
of 12 years to face criminal charges, nor
can their identity be released, he said.
The investigation is now turning to the
owner of the shotgun, who was in the
house at the time the shooting took place,
he said.
The matter of the insecure firearm is still
part of the police investigation, and it is
anticipated that the owner of the firearm
may face charges, said Faulkner.
Three of the teens lived in the house
and three were visiting. There was no
indication of liquor or drug use, said
Faulkner.
Faulkner said the teens are devastated and
so are the parents of the dead boy.
The mother of the boy told me, You see
your son leave the house and you dont
think hes never coming back again. They
are distraught, horrified. he said.
Vancouver police are combing through
more than one million photos and 1,000
hours of video submitted as evidence
following the Stanley Cup riot in
downtown Vancouver.
Hundreds of people tore through downtown
streets breaking windows, looting stores
and setting cars on fire following a huge
street gathering that had been watching the
Canucks Stanley Cup loss.
Crown attorney Neil MacKenzie said only
a handful of charges have been laid, but it
is still early in the investigation.
Obviously, the files are being given
priority by Crown and police but it
does take some time to complete the
investigation and prepare reports,
MacKenzie said.
Certainly, it appears the police are dealing
with a substantial amount of evidence
[and] information that they are going to
have to assess and determine whether it
supports charges.
At this point in the investigation,
MacKenzie said, it is too early to speculate
how many rioters could end up in court.
The branch is going to be working closely
with police in assessing the evidence that
is available, the evidence they are able to
collect, he said.
The prosecution service certainly takes
the cases very seriously and we will
devote whatever resources are necessary
to effectively prosecute any cases that
result.
Mackenzie said prosecutors will meet with
police as a part of a preliminary process of
determining how the files will be handled
as they come in.

The society estimates about half of
Canadian children never take traditional
swimming lessons. But new Canadians
people who have been here for five years or
less also have a higher risk oI drowning
than those born here.
A study last year showed new Canadians
are four times more likely to be unable
to swim, but focus group research during
the past year gave the society even more
insight into why that might be, Byers said.
Over and over again, we heard from our
focus group members that swimming was
a very Canadian thing to do, she said.
Many said swimming pools and beaches
were not easily accessible for them in their
home country. They view Canada as being
about the great outdoors and swimming is
something they want for their children.
The Lifesaving Society is a charity and
volunteer organization that works to
prevent water-related injuries and deaths.
Drownings are on the rise in Canada, the
Lifesaving Society says.
According to reports, drownings in 2010
were up 10% over the year before, the
society said Tuesday when it released its
new national drowning report.
Barbara Byers, the public education
director of the Lifesaving Society, said
its very concerning to see the spike in
drownings in 2010 amongst children under
five years of age. There were 22 reported
drownings in 2010 compared to 14 in 2009.
And drowning numbers are up from just a
few years ago. Until 2004, the society said
there was a long-term trend where each
year saw fewer drownings in Canadian
waters. After reaching an all-time low of
433 water-related deaths in 2004. there was
an upswing to 492 in 2005; 508 in 2006;
and a dip to 480 in 2007. Final statistics for
2008 to 2010 are not available yet, so the
society used data from media and Internet
reports to determine drownings in 2010

Summer is barbecue season but it`s
also the peak season for food-borne
illnesses. Heres how to avoid food
poisoning from your grill.
Barbecuing is a great summer tradition
but if not done properly, it can make you
sick.
Health Canada estimates there are
between 11 million and 13 million cases
of food-related illnesses in Canada
every year, and the risk of food-borne
illnesses increases dramatically during
the summer months. Hot, humid
weather creates perfect conditions for
bacteria such as Salmonella and E.coli
to fourish. Add to this the diIfculty
of refrigerating foods or washing your
hands while picnicking or camping, and
its not hard to understand why food
poisoning is a particular risk during
barbecue season.
Here are some ways to avoid ills from
the grill.
keep it clean
Hand washing is one oI the easiest
ways to prevent the spread of bacteria.
Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds
with soap and warm water before and
after handling food. Also wash when
you switch from one food to another.
Keep counter tops and utensils sanitized.
Tip: you can make your own sanitizer by
combining 5 ml (1 tsp) of bleach with
750 ml (3 cups) of water in a spray
bottle. (Dont forget to label the bottle!)
When camping or on a picnic. be sure
to bring clean water. You may also
want to consider using waterless hand
sanitizer or disposable wipes.

to prevent it from dripping on other food
such as produce.

use the food thermometer
The safe chef doesnt depend on guess

According to Health Canada, the safe
temperatures for cooked foods are:

bacteria can grow when food is allowed
to cool down slowly. And contrary to
popular belief, health experts say hot
dogs should always be cooked to kill
bacteria called Listeria.

We all know that good oral hygiene is
important for the pearly whites. But now
theres even more reason to foss: It may
help to ward off a deadly cancer.
Gum disease and other dental diIfculties
have already been linked with an increased
risk in heart disease, heart attacks, stroke,
diabetes and pre-term and low birth-weight
babies. And now researchers have found a
connection between fossing and pancreatic
cancer.
As reported researchers at the Harvard
School of Public Health found that
gum disease was a major risk factor for
pancreatic cancer.
We found that individuals with a history of
periodontal disease had about a 60 per cent
increase in their risk of getting pancreatic
cancer, the study said.

potential risks. And after these risks were
factored out, men with a history of gum

developing pancreatic cancer compared to
men without periodontal disease. The more
severe the periodontal disease, the greater
the risk.
While the study doesnt prove gum disease
causes cancer, researchers speculate that it
results in chronic infammation occurring
throughout the body and it is this that
could ultimately predispose people to
pancreatic cancer.
Another possibility is that the higher
levels of bacteria found in the mouths and
stomachs of people with gum disease, as
well as the presence of nitrosamines
potent cancer-causing compounds also
found in tobacco could lead to the cancer.
Men who had both gum disease and tooth
loss had the highest risk for pancreatic
cancer, the study found. Researchers said
that additional studies are planned to

About pancreatic cancer
The pancreas is a gland located within the
abdomen near the stomach. It is important
for making digestive juices and hormones
such as insulin.
While pancreatic cancer may not be
as common as other types of cancer, it
contributes to a large proportion of cancer
deaths. In Canada. an estimated 3.500
new cases were diagnosed last year, and
there were an estimated 3.400 deaths.
Worldwide. there are an estimated 232.000
new cases of pancreatic cancer annually.
Because most patients are not diagnosed
until the cancer has spread, pancreatic
cancer has one of the worst chances of
recovery of all types of cancer. Most
patients are not diagnosed until the cancer
has spread, and less than one in 10 patients
is alive fve years aIter diagnosis.
The chance of developing pancreatic
cancer at some point in life is close to 1
in 85, or about 1 per cent, according to the
Mt. Sinai Hospital website. Most cases of
pancreatic cancer occur after the age of 50.
It is slightly more common in males than
in females.

A Calgary man faces charges in connection
with the rioting in Vancouver following the
Stanley Cup final.
Joshua Lyle Evans, 27, is charged with
possessing a weapon dangerous to the public
peace in connection with an incident where
two men were stabbed on Hornby Street.
Police have arrested 117 people since the
violence on June 15, officials said.
Most were picked up that night for breach
of peace.
Investigators are continuing to pore
over thousands of videos and tips and
said they anticipate many more charges
being laid.
The city of Edmonton is loosening its rules
to make it easier for daycares to open.
New child care space will no longer need
to have an outdoor play space attached to
the building.
Instead, the city will follow provincial rules,
which allow that play space to be a nearby
city park or a school yard.
The city believes this will make it easier for
more operators to get into the market and
help parents find a space.
Provincial numbers show there are 35,000
child care spaces in Edmonton and theyre
80 per cent full. Some have wait lists that
are years long.
One other rule change will make it easier for
parents to pick up and drop off their child.
New daycares will be required to have at
least two parking spaces available for drop
off and pickup instead of just one.
Statistics Canada says Canadians are
eating fewer fruits and vegetables for the
first time in a decade, according to its latest
analysis of the countrys state of health.
In its latest Canadian Community Health
Survey, Statistics Canada reports that just
43 per cent of Canadians aged 12 and older
ate fruits or vegetables more than five
times a day in 2010. Thats down from 46
per cent the year before.
Broken down by gender, the survey found
that half of all women reached for fruit
and vegetables five or more times daily
compared with just 36 per cent of men.
The data is based on an ongoing survey of
65,000 Canadians on a gamut of more than
30 health indicators.
Other highlights from the latest edition of
the annual snapshot include:
Six in 10 Canadians reported their own
state of health as very good or excellent.
Canadians nevertheless reported a slight
increase in their daily stress levels, with 24
per cent describing most days are either
extremely or quite stressful. That was up
two percentage points from 2008.
The number oI Canadians whose height
and weight categorizes them as obese
under Health Canada guidelines was
virtually unchanged from the year before,
at approximately 4.5 million or 18 per cent
of the overall population.
For the Iirst time. Statistics Canada
found the same number of women as
men reporting they had been diagnosed
with hypertension. Overall, nearly 1 in
6 Canadians said they had high blood
pressure.
One-in-eight oI the 15 per cent oI
Canadians who said they had no regular
medical doctor, reported easy access to
alternative medical care such as a walk-in
clinic.
Among the 21 per cent. or 6 million
Canadians who said they were either daily
or occasional smokers, more men (24 per
cent) lit up in 2010 than in the year before.
The number of women smokers fell two
percentage points, however, to 17 per cent
in 2010.
In its bulletin announcing the results online
Tuesday, Statistics Canada suggested the
trend among women may continue, and
indeed spread to men in the coming years
as well.
Since people typically begin smoking
during their teenage years, the percentage
who had not started smoking by age 20
is an indicator of future smoking rates,
StatsCan wrote, noting that 57 per cent of
women between the ages of 20 and 24 said
they had never smoked.
Thats up from 41 per cent in 2003.
And the same holds for young men too,
45 per cent of who reported no prior
experience with tobacco.
That also represents a considerable
increase from the 37 per cent of young
men who said the same in 2003.
Although the survey captures data from
Canadians in every province and territory,
Residents of Indian reserves, health care
institutions. some remote areas and Iull-

You rub and rub your eyes, but they wont
stop itching. When you look in the mirror,
they are red and puffy. Whats going on? Do
you have a strange sickness? No you have
a common problem called conjunctivitis.
Its better known as pinkeye.
what is Conjunctivitis?
Coniunctivitis (say: kon-iunk-tih-vy-tis)
is the most common eye problem kids
can have. It can cause redness, itching,
infammation (say: in-fa-may-shun) or
swelling, and a clear or white, yellow, or
greenish gooey liquid to collect in the eyes.
Its called pinkeye because the white part
of the eye and inside the eyelids become
red or pink when you have it. Pinkeye
may start in one eye, but many people
get conjunctivitis in both eyes at the same
time. Conjunctivitis usually doesnt hurt,
but itching can be annoying. Sometimes it
feels like you have an eyelash or a speck of
sand in your eye and cant get it out.
Adults, especially parents and teachers
who spend a lot of time with kids, can get
conjunctivitis too. Conjunctivitis lasts a
short time, usually about a week or less, and
then goes away by itself or after treatment.
how do i get Conjunctivitis?
Kids get conjunctivitis for different
reasons. Most kids get it from bacteria (say:
bak-teer-ee-uh) or viruses. This is called
inIectious (say: in-Iek-shus) coniunctivitis.
Bacteria can be seen only with a powerful
microscope, and viruses are even smaller
than bacteria! Bacteria live on your skin
or in your nose or mouth all the time and
you never know it. Most dont ever bother
you, but certain kinds of bacteria can cause
infections like conjunctivitis.
Sometimes kids get ear infections when
they have conjunctivitis because the same
bacteria can cause both problems.
Viruses, like the kind that can give you
a cold, can cause conjunctivitis, too.
Conjunctivitis is easy to catch just through
touching. You can get conjunctivitis by
touching the hand of an infected friend
who has touched his or her eyes. If you
then touch your eyes, the infection can be
spread to you. Washing your hands often
with warm, soapy water is the best way to
avoid being infected with conjunctivitis.
Kids also get conjunctivitis because of
allergies or because they get something
irritating in their eyes, but these kinds of
conjunctivitis are not contagious.
what should i do if i think i have it?
If your eyes are itchy, red, or more crusty
than usual in the morning, you should tell
a parent. Dont wait, because conjunctivitis
spreads easily. Your mom or dad probably
will call the doctor for an appointment.
what will the doctor do?
No one knows exactly how many kids get
conjunctivitis each year but your doctor
treats many who have it and can spot it
pretty quickly. The doctor also will ask you
if your eyes have been red and itchy lately
or if you have noticed any goopy stuff in
your eyes. Its important to tell the doctor
if you know anyone, like a brother or a
friend, who has red and itchy eyes too.
Your doctor will know if you have
conjunctivitis by looking carefully at your
eyes to see if they are red and if any liquid
is coming from them. The doctor will want
to know that you can see OK and that
nothing has gotten into your eye. Finally.
your doctor may examine your ears to see
if you have an ear infection caused by the
same bacteria that can cause conjunctivitis.
If you have conjunctivitis caused by
bacteria, the doctor will probably prescribe
antibiotic eye drops or ointment for you.
Babies are usually given the ointment and
kids and adults get the eye drops. Your mom
or dad can help you put the medication in
your eyes a couple of times a day for about
a week. Its important to use whatever the
doctor prescribes so the infection doesnt
come back. Unfortunately, these drops
wont work if a virus is causing your
conjunctivitis. If allergies are causing your
itchy, red eyes, the doctor may prescribe
special eye drops to help with these allergy
symptoms.
If your eyes are bothering you, try using
a cool or warm washcloth on your eyes.
Sometimes, your mom or dad can make
you feel better by gently cleaning your
eyes with warm water and cotton balls to
remove the gooey liquid or crusty stuff.
They should be very careful to wash their
hands and throw out the cotton balls they
use. Washcloths and towels used to clean
or dry your eyes should go right into the
laundry so no one else gets infected.
Most schools require a note from a doctor
for a kid with pinkeye to return to school.
Kids can usually return to school after their
frst 24 hours oI antibiotic eye drops.
Though it might be tough, try not to touch
your eyes and remember to wash your
hands often. These two things will help keep
pinkeye from spreading to your friends and
family members. They will appreciate it!

Protective sports equipment: The design
of protective gear such as helmets and face
protectors has improved a lot over the years.
Health Canada advises against reselling
helmets for cycling or rollerblading, as
well as riding helmets.
Appliances: Missing parts, unknown age,
misuse and abuse make these risky items
to buy. You may want to have a repairman
take a look at any electric appliances
before you use them at home. The Canada
Safety Council warns that insurance may
not cover damage caused by a fre resulting
from a used appliance.
Window blinds: The pull chords can
strangle a child. Health Canada notes that
blinds and curtains with pull chords should
not be sold unless they have a tension device
on the looped pull cord and a device to
prevent inner cords from being pulled out.
There must also be a label with instructions
to keep pull chords out of reach of children.
Items made from fabric: It may set you
squirming, but bed bugs are becoming an
increasingly common problem. Be careful
buying items like clothing, bedding, blankets
and used cloth furniture as they could be
infested with these hardy creatures. (Bed
bugs can live for surprisingly long periods of
time without food.) Carefully inspect items
before you buy, especially if they are items
that cant be easily cleaned. But beware: the
sneaky critters like to hide in daylight and
keep to snug holes and crevices. Look for
signs of their eggs or droppings.

how safe is second-hand stuff?
Hunting for bargains or cleaning out your
closets? Youll want to watch out for these
health and safety risks.
One mans trash is another mans
treasure. Thats the principle behind the
market for used items. Its a great way
for people to earn some cash from items
they no longer need or want, and savvy
consumers can fnd great deals. It`s also
an environmentally-sound practice those
same items aren`t ending up in a landfll.
However, despite the appeals to our pocket
book and green conscience, some items
simply arent safe for reuse and can
actually pose health and safety hazards. If
youre looking to buy or sell used items,
heres what you need to watch out for:
items to avoid or question
Cosmetics: Whether its a beauty
preparation like make-up. skin creams
and perfume, or a grooming aid like
soap and shampoo, these products
could be harbouring harmful bacteria
that could cause a rash or infection.
Important information such as ingredients,
directions and warnings could also
be missing.
Lawn darts: You may recall that lawn
darts were banned in Canada and U.S. in
the late 1980s, but since then the older,
unsafe sets have been replaced with new
soft versions. However, some people
may have ordered parts and assembled
their own sets, so take note that darts with
elongated metal tips are still illegal to sell
in Canada.

SES crews work on repairing a wall ripped
off from strong winds in Port MacDonnell
Australia News
A wall of a house has collapsed in strong
winds at Port MacDonnell in the south-east
of South Australia.
Emergency services were called to the
house at the corner of Sea Parade and
Standish Street.
Roads were blocked off while the danger
was assessed.
The weather bureau has issued a severe
weather warning for areas including
Kangaroo Island and parts of the Mount
Lofty Ranges.
It warns Adelaide will be battered by
strong winds.
ETSA says it has cancelled most planned
work and has its crews ready to respond to
any blackouts. Three people have been arrested in north
Queensland aIter Australian Federal Police
(AFP) uncovered a 25-year-old case oI
alleged passport fraud.
AFP oIIices say a 66-year-old American
man; 67-year-old Danish woman and
42-year-old American woman used
fraudulently obtained United States
passports to enter Australia more than two
decades ago.
All three have been charged with offences
including producing false documents and
contravening the Migration Act.
THE volcanic ash cloud over the eastern
parts of Australia is costing the tourism
sector more than $10 million a day, an
industry group says.
Tourism and Transport Forum chieI
executive John Lee said the return of the
ash cloud was causing havoc across the
country, after the major airlines suspended
services in and out of the key hubs of
Sydney and Melbourne.
Our estimate for the wider tourism
industry along the east coast and bottom
part of Australia, the daily impact will be
over $10 million, Mr Lee said.
He said tourism operators and those
working in the aviation industry would be
most affected.
This has been a very, very tough year for
the tourism industry, Mr Lee said.
This is nearly the straw that will break the
camels back for this industry.
Thousands of homes were without power
as gale force winds and blizzard conditions
brought down on southern Australia on
Tuesday.
The State Emergency Service (SES)
received hundreds of calls for help amid
the stormy conditions.
The Bureau of Meteorology issued a
severe weather warning for much of
Victoria as damaging winds with gusts of
up to 120km/h are forecast to hit parts of
the south-west. north-east. north central.
Wimmera, and west, east and south
Gippsland regions.
In Melbourne, outer eastern suburbs
have been most affected with fallen trees
blocking roads.
The weather bureau says heavy rain and
thunderstorms have also struck the states
south-west. at Casterton and Portland
and also forecast blizzard conditions and
destructive winds for the Australian Capital
Territory and southern NSW regions.
The bureau is warning sheep grazers of
a high risk of losses of lamb and sheep
TAXPAYERS face a $1.5 million phone bill
this year to cover long distance and local
phone calls from asylum seekers and staff
in just one immigration detention centre.
The Department of Immigration last week
issued a tender seeking phone companies to
cover the cost of telecommunications from
the detention centre at RAAF Scherger near
Weipa in northern Queensland. Scherger
is now home to 600 asylum seekers all
single males and predominantly Afghan.
There are about 200 immigration and
Serco staff including lawyers, interpreters
and health workers at the centre and 10
Defence personnel.
The department said that it could not break
down the total cost of the calls between
detainees calling overseas and the calls
made by staff.
It denied that the bulk of the $1.5 million
would be used by detainees.
Its a contract for what might be spent in the
next 12 months at the entire Scherger base, a
spokesman said. That telecommunications
cost is for all operations.
We cant break it down; we dont bill or
time the calls.
Detainees earn points toward phone cards,
which they can then use on a weekly basis
up to $50 in value.
Opposition spokesman Jamie Briggs said
Immigration Minister Chris Bowen should
immediately review the issue of phone
cards.
This is beyond the expectations of what
the community would think is reasonable,
he said.
Australians cost of living pressures are
already through the roof. They should be
furious that a Labor government is handing
out $2500 phone cards to asylum seekers.

We will see trees coming down, we will
see debris across our roads and were most
likely to see roofs in different parts of our
state being dislodged, Mr Wiebusch said.
He urged people to move vehicles under
cover or away from trees, secure loose
items around the house, garden and
balcony, take care when driving and stay
away from fallen power lines.
Destructive winds averaging 80km/h with
gusts around 125km/h are forecast for parts
of the Southern Tablelands and Snowy
Mountains.
Wind gusts could be up to 160km/h in the
alpine area, and damaging winds gusting
up to 95km/h are forecast for the ACT.
The Bureau of Meteorology has issued
a severe weather warning for the Mount
Lofty Ranges, Kangaroo Island, Lower
South East and parts of the Mid North,
Murraylands and Upper South East
districts.
Mr Lee said service cancellations would
not only affect domestic markets but also
major international markets in China, the
USA and the UK.
'For the wider tourism industry. we
understand (there will be) over $10 million
in costs for losses each day this continues,
he told reporters at Sydney Airport.
These costs will increase.
A Qantas spokeswoman said earlier the
delays were serious but the airline did
not yet have a figure on costs.
Virgin Australia, Qantas, Jetstar and Tiger
all cancelled flights around Australia and
some international services due to the risks
posed by the ash cloud.
The ash cloud Irom Chile`s Puyehue-

disruptions last week as the plume made

Remakes of South lms
getting bigger attention
Aishwarya`s pregnant
bollywood quiz
Its either remakes or sequels
cooking in B-town these days. With
remakes being the most liked`
delicacies on Bollywoods menu,
more and more flmmakers are
turning to South Indian super-hits.
Ghajini (Ghajini), Wanted (Pokiri)
and Ready (Ready) have been real
money churners at the Bollywood
box-oIfce in the last couple oI
years.
Following the trend and relying on
the set formula, not one but four
producers Ronnie Screwvala, Vashu
Bhagnani, Shatrughan Sinha and
David Dhawan-are now vying to get
the rights of the recent Telugu super
hit 100% Love.
Since the super hit was directed by
Sukumar, all the producers want
to keep the favour intact and are
willing to sign the man for their
version.
While Vashu Bhagnani and
Shatrughan Sinha want their kids,
Jackky and Luv respectively, to
star in the flm. Ronnie and David
Dhawan, currently, are only focusing
on getting the rights in their hands.
Jackky`s recent F.A.L.T.U was
well received by the audience, but

The elder Bachchan tweeted And

Sukumars touch to the remake.
A source says, Poonam Sinha,
who is ready to re-launch Luv. has
already met the director for the rights
of 100% Love. Vashu Bhagnani is
willing to get both the rights and the
director for his version.
Ronnie Screwvala has seen the flm
and wants to speak to Sukumar and
David Dhawan too is in talks with
the director. What needs to be seen
is who emerges as the winner.
Saathiya (Alai Payuthey),
Judwa (Hello Brother), Shakti
(Anthahpuram), Rehna Hai Tere Dil
Mein (Minnale), Tere Naam (Sethu)
show that the trend of remaking
South flms into Hindi has existed
for a very long time now. All these
flms went on to become even bigger
hits in Bollywood.
Its tough to predict whether the
remake oI this flm will work or
not. What we are looking for is who
among the four gives their 100 % to
impress the director Sukumar and
get away with the rights of 100%
Love.

Anticipation can be a good thing

there has been so much advance

most Ian-based movies Super 8 is
not based on a comic book or part

Men who were overweight or obese as

It said men who were overweight as

British experts studied about 20.000 men in

with University College London and Harvard
School oI Public Health. Boston. the study
analysed medical records oI 19.593 male

linked to several cancers. but always in later
liIe. said researcher Linsay Gray oI MRC.
'It is very interesting that higher BMI at age

UnIortunately. many people become bored

Both signifcantly reduced the number oI

'Taken together. these two studies have
demonstrated that components oI black

and/or result in helping to reduce the
number oI tumours. as quoted by Dr Tim

'These fndings suggest the need Ior
clinical trials to evaluate the effect of

needed to shed further light on clinical
