Community Service Projects

July 15, 2010RC Holy Spirit (RI D3780) and RC Marikina North (RI D3800) cemented their sisterhood agreement by way of medical mission
A medical-dental mission was organized by our sister club, RC Marikina North, in partnership with SM Foundation Inc on July 15, 2010. The mission was conducted through the intervention of our Chair for Health & Wellness, PP Dr Roger Belleza, who coordinated with SM Foundation for the supply of medicines, medical supplies and the mobile x-ray and ECG van. A total of 868 patients availed of free medical consultations while the following were beneficiaries of other free services: 100 ECG, 121 x-ray, 100 bone scanning, 90 tooth extractions. After the mission, RCHS officers & members were treated to lunch by the officers & members of RC Marikina North. Both clubs agreed to hold a joint meeting on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. Rotarians IPP Linda, then PP Dodgie, Doc Belleza, Dr Bong, Thelma and Ric were there.

Batangas City September 7, for over 1,000 patients: Medical 580; dental-102; ecg 58; x-ray 100; and bone screening200. North Harbor Tondo September 18, for over 1,000 procedures: Medical 635; dental extractions180; ecg 100; x-ray212. Rosario, Cavite September 23, for almost 1,200 procedures: Medical 783; dental extractions 150; ecg 79; x-ray120; bone scanning - 68. Barangay Kaligayahan, Fairview QC October 13, with 1,528 patients attended to: 1,108 medical consultations; 120 dental extractions; 120 chest Xrays; 100 ECG examinations; and 80 bone scans Project 6 QC for Elderly Citizens October 16, with 1,139 patients: 839 medical consultations; 100 chest Xrays; 100 ECG examinations; and 100 bone scans. Muntinlupa November 18, with 1,048 cases attended to: 780 medical consultations; 80 dental extractions; 100 chest X-rays; and 88 ECG examinations. Calamba Laguna Nov 25, with 1,630 cases: 1,258 medical consultations; 86 dental extractions; 100 chest X-rays; 98 ECG exams; and 88 bone screens Calauan Laguna December 9, with 1,186 cases: 816 medical consultations; 150 dental cases; 80 chest X-rays; 92 ECG exams; and 48 bone screens Lipa City last Jan 24, the team led by PP Dr Belleza attended to 172 patients: 117 medical consultations, 19 ECG exams and 36 chest x-rays. The Feb 3 medical-dental mission in Pampanga provided free services and medicines to 887 patients: 594 medical; 68 dental; and 110 x-ray, 80 ECG & 35 urinalyses exams.

RCMN and RCHS, along with Knights of Columbus and PCSO and GK supported the medical-dental mission organized by UST High School batch 70. This mission attended to the needs of 545 patients: 245 adult-medical, 173 pedia, 76 dental, and 40 dermatology cases. RCHS had earlier donated vitamins for the patients.

RCHS and partners form Diabetics Club; free fasting-blood sugar screening given
October 23. In response to the prevalence of diagnosed cases of diabetes in the community, RC Holy Spirit and the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association formed a Diabetics Club with sponsorship and support of Natrapharma Inc. Diabetes is a growing health problem and diabetics or diabetic-prone individuals cannot afford to ignore the dangers associated with the disease and put their lives at risk. The Diabetics Club has been envisioned by PP Dr Roger Belleza, Chair of Health & Wellness, to provide a forum where those already afflicted, and those who are at risk, could discuss and learn how to properly manage the disease. November 20. The 2nd free fasting-blood screening project last Nov 20th served 86 patients of which 33 persons were identified to be afflicted with diabetes. The next steps for these patients are being finalized by PP Dr Roger Belleza and partners DAHHA, Natrapharm and RCHS. Rotarians PE Ped and Treas Marcia were on hand last Nov 20 to assist in the process.

Jan 22RCHS, Interact and Rotaract Clubs of Holy Spirit join hands to help protect community from fatal rabies
Barangay Holy Spirit held its first mass anti-rabies vaccination for dogs on January 22, a project spearheaded by RCHS in partnership with the barangay council, Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association, and the Bureau of Animal Industry. A total of 1,023 dogs were given free antirabies shots by 10 veterinarians from the BAI and the Quezon City government. Vaccination was done in (5) satellite stations within the barangay. At the forefront handling the registration of dogs and their owners and distribution of vaccination cards and dog tags were members of our Rotaract and Interact Clubs. Rotaract President James Lorenzo busily shuttled between satellite stations ensuring the availability of vaccines for the dogs and food & water rations for the volunteers. Interact President Xyrryl Mae Opinaldo and her team bravely held the fort at the Gilarmi basketball court where the most number of dogs (414) were brought. PE Ped Condeno, Sec JR Delgra and Rotarians Dr Bong, Baby Lorenzo and Lowell Custodio were on hand to guide our young volunteers. Congratulations to Rotaract and Interact for a very commendable job!

Dec 5Rtn Marlene Martinez, DDM, leads dental-optical mission at Sacred Heart
Rtn Dr Marlene led a group of dentist-friends and associates in providing dental services to some 100 pediatric and adult patients from depressed areas in the barangay, It was the 3rd of such mission which she has conducted with the support of the pastoral council of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chapel in Isidora Hills where the mission was held. This time, optical services were given and 53 patients would receive free reading glasses after having been checked. PP Dr Belleza was on hand to check the blood pressure of the adult patients and prescribe medicines as needed. RCHS provided some medicines and supplies needed for the dental aspect of the mission. Rtn Dr Bong also donated some analgesics and antibiotics. Delicious lunch was served to the volunteers, compliments of Ms Aurora de Leon.

Oct 24 Non-traditional, alternative healthcare missions also available for patients who prefer this
Our member Rtn Dr Eui Bong Jung, Doctor of Oriental Medicine and certified acupuncturist, has been organizing and leading medical missions for patients who prefer the non-traditional, oriental medical care approach. The latest oriental medical mission organized by Dr Bong was held last Sunday, Oct 24, at the Payatas Family of Christ Church. This mission served 120 poor patients including 50 dental cases. The next oriental medical mission of Rtn Dr Bong shall be held on Oct 31st, also at Payatas. Photo below shows Dr Bong, seated at right, with mission volunteers and some of the patients.

Rtn Dr Bong organizes & leads series of free medical missions based on alternative oriental medical care for poor patients

Nov 7 - Masaya CDP Center in Payatas There were 97 beneficiary-patients including those given free acupuncture treatment . Nov 13 Angeles City. There were 472 beneficiarypatients including 75 dental cases. Medical patients were given free consultation, acupuncture treatment and free medicines. Principal sponsors of the mission were the Rotary Club of Pasay-MIA and the Friendship United Methodist Church. Oriental medical-dental services were provided by Oriental Medical Clinic (Dr Bong, Dr Min, Ilchim, Koryo, Kyunghee) and the Green Dental Team. Venue was Sapang Bato Elementary School in Angeles City.

Feb 2-4Rotarians Dr Bong and David Kim help extend free medical/surgical services to residents in Old Balara QC and Mangyans in Mt Halcon Mindoro
RCHS again demonstrated its commitment to help build healthy communities. Last Feb 2 in Old Balara Church, and Feb 3-4, 2011 in Halcon Mountain, Mindoro, a total of 948 patients who were mostly 'Mangyans' were given free medical services. Of these 39 were surgical patients of herniolomy (having tumor including breast tumor). Rotarians Mr. David In Il Kim and Dr Bong arranged for the services of Dr. Lee Jin Yong (PHD) and Dr. Kwon Moon Kwang (PHD) who are expert surgeons and specialists of emergency medicine at Mother's Breast Center in Pusan, Korea. Rev. Kim In Hyo, Mr. David Kim's brother also cooperated in the project. A patient of herniolomy who has been severely suffering for almost a year because of lack of P250,000 for surgery, was finally operated on. His family was very thankful and revived after a three-hour free surgical operation.

Nov 21 Payatas QC. 54 beneficiary-patients were given free medical consultation, acupuncture treatment and free medicines and vitamins last Nov 21, 2010 in the depressed area of Payatas. Dec 11 Agape, Tarlac. Rtns Dr Bong and David Kim and their Happy Together Team brought Christmas cheers to 110 patients in Agape Tarlac last Dec 11. Patients were provided oriental medical service, free medicines, full meals, gifts and even hair-cuts during the program. Jan 16Payatas QC. The medical mission sponsored by Dr Bong at the Payatas Family Church served 50 beneficiary-patients. Medical patients were given free consultation, free medicines and vermicide (deworming) for every member of a family, and vitamins, too. Feb 27 Payatas QC. The team of Korean medical, dental and heath volunteers served 87 patients. who were given free consultation, free medicines and vermicide, vitamin C, vitamin C syrups, firstaid medicine.

Sept 8 RC Holy Spirit initiates support for skills-for-livelihood training of Holy Spirit National High School students

Two students learn and practice manicure techniques as part of the lesson in technology & livelihood subject; chart reminds students of the key steps in the manicure procedure; and photo above shows Master Teacher Ms Amie Q. Cuasto and Principal Ms Zaida M. Padullo of HSNHS, and IPP Linda Palattao of RC Holy Spirit. IPP Linda turned over a donation of manicure kits for use by the students.

About 850 kids from poor families in Barangay Holy Spirit trooped to the covered court of Don Antonio Heights last December 4 for the annual giftgiving program of RCHS and Interact of Holy Spirit in partnership with the Barangay Council and the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association. The Interactors led by President Xyrryl Mae Opinaldo presented an entertaining dance number and a puppet show, and led the kids in song & games. The children were served tasty arroz caldo.

Dec 14SM Foundation, with RCHS, made 500 children happy!

Last Dec 14, SM Foundation held the 2010 Makea-Child Happy project at SM Fairview. RCHS supported the project by sending 300 kids from poor families in our village. RCHS was represented in the event by President Dodgie, Treas Marcia and Rtns Kgds Baby and Lowell. PP Doc Belleza has been our coordinator with SM Foundation in partnership projects.

Pres Diogenes Osabel was Guest Speaker during the closing ceremony of the DepEd Alternative Learning System Accreditation & Equivalency Workshop for Instructional Managers & Service Providers last Oct 22 at the DepEd Regional Educational Learning Center in Marikina. With him in the photo are Officials of DepEd-NCR headed by Dr. Virginia Silvestre, ALS Division Chief, and RCHS Secretary Rtn. JR Delgra. Ms. Josefina Mamuyac of QCALI, one of the sponsored attendees of RCHS, received her training certificate during the event.

Gift-giving cheers up the poor in Payatas area

In yet another Christmas program with gift-giving and food-distribution last Dec 23, Rotarians IPP Linda Palattao, Dr Bong and JR Delgra joined principal sponsors Dr Luz Corpuz and the Palattao family in cheering up poor families in the Payatas area. RC Holy Spirit donated some toy items for the kids.

Jan 15RCHS and Rotaract Club plant trees to arrest serious soil erosion in Antipolo City
Last Saturday, January 15, was both a fulfilling and fun-filled day for RCHS and its newly-organized partner, the Rotaract Club of Holy Spirit. With some 50 seedlings of fire tree, caballero, guijo, and other species with them, the two groups proceeded to Barangay Calawis at the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountain range in Antipolo to plant trees in an area that has been experiencing soil erosion. It was the first service activity of the Rotaractors led by President James Lorenzo. RCHS is committed to fight global warming by planting more trees. In the near future, as Pres Dodgie says, with District support, we hope to start reforesting the badly eroded mountains of the Marikina watershed.

Feb 12RC Holy Spirit and partners bring free healthcare services to 1,600 members of the local community
The Gamot Para sa Kapwa medical/dental/diagnostic mission held at the Don Antonio Heights covered court and elderly center last February 12, 2011 drew a large crowd mostly from depressed areas within Barangay Holy Spirit. The health mission was a partnership project of RCHS with the SM Foundation as principal sponsor, the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association (DAHHA), Greater Don Antonio Heights Senior Citizens Association, and the St Benedicts Parish Pastoral Council (SBPPC). PP Dr Roger Belleza, Chair of RCHS Health & Wellness, spearheaded this project. He organized some 25 medical practitioners who provided free consultation services to 979 patients. Dr Roger stood as exemplar of Rotarys international motto Service Above Self. This day, although still tired from a medical mission the previous day, Dr Roger stayed on until the last patient had been served. RCHS Rotarians Dr Marlene Martinez and Dr Jong Myeong Kim and a volunteer SMF dentist provided tooth extraction and related services. PE Dr Terry Amado and IPP Dr Tessie Estrellado of our sister club, RC Marikina North of District 3800, came to share their time and expertise as well. Rtn Peth Rivera assisted the dentists while Rotaractor Kevin Laragan and SBPPC volunteers served as dental aides. A total of 254 dental patients were served. Rtn Dr Myeong brought three portable dental chairs and a complete array of dental tools and implements. It was an inspiring sight to see Dr Myeong, a Korean like Rtns Dr Bong and David Kim, providing free dental service to many patients, assisted by his wife and young relatives. Rtn Dr Eui Bong Jung administered acupuncture to 20 patients, some of whom were initially scared to be needlepricked, but the handsome, gentle acupuncturist put his patients at ease in no time.

Free FBS monitoring service continues

The monthly free FBS monitoring service for diabetics and diabetes-prone members of the community was held last April 30, 2011 at the Don Antonio Heights Wellness Center. This is a project of Health & Wellness Chair PP Dr Roger Belleza and is being undertaken with the sponsorship of the Natrapharm-Patriot Group, and support from the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association. RC Holy Spirit commemorated literacy month by extending more support to public schools in its host community
Computers and printers are donated for the Special Education (SPED) program of Dona Juana Elementary School
On March 16, 2011, RC Holy Spirit turned over two computer sets to the Dona Juana Elementary School for the use of Special Education (SpEd) pupils. Presently, there are 102 SpEd pupils in the school with various disabilities: hearing impairment, mental retardation, autism, developmental disorder like ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), handled by four dedicated teachers led by Mrs Gloria C Tatad. According to Mrs Tatad, all the SPED pupils will be given computer lessons. In particular, the older ones (aged 18-24) will be taught simple typing jobs to enable them to realize their potentials for development and productivity and eventuPhoto shows Principal Ms Emely Pelobello and SpEd Head ally become productive members of society. The school, located in Barangay Holy Spirit, has a student population of close to 7,000.

Padullo (center) of the Holy Spirit National High School last Mar 11, 2011. The turn-over was witnessed by Interactors led by President Xyrryll and by school officials. The books had been solicited from friends and associates of IPP Linda.

Jan 28-30Interact officers complete Rotary youth training

Interact Club of Holy Spirit President-elect Harold Kim Maggay and Secretary Gretchen Berguera attended the RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards) Training at the Phillips Sanctuary in Antipolo City last January 28-30, 2011. It was hosted by RC Paraiso QC and was the 23rd training seminar for the youth. Aside from meeting new friends from different Interact clubs, our Interactors were given valuable insights on how to be better persons and leaders and in organizing effective service projects. On the 2nd day, the participants planted trees as a sign of their commitment to care for the environment. Before the youngsters departed the camp site, Global President Carmen Chuas parting words were: The ones that dont have the new generation programs are missing a part of the great adventure of Rotary. To Harold and Gretchen, this great experience will linger for a lifetime and they intend to impart whatever they learned during the seminar to other young people.

Interact of Holy Spirit rendered accomplishment report to District

The Interact Club of Holy Spirit summarized its accomplishments for the period Feb 2010 to Jan 2011 and on-stream projects until June 2011. The slide presentation of Interact may be viewed by clicking the thumbnail at right. The presentation did not yet cover two major service projects theyve actively supported this February: a largescale medical-dental-diagnostic mission, and the whole-day Araw ng Kabataan celebration reported in this bulletin. The report includes an innovative own-initiative project that the Interactors started in January campus mentoring to help raise level of literacy.

Feb 19Rotaract & Interact celebrate Araw ng Kabataan by cheering up 700 younger kids

With RCHS as main sponsor, the Rotaract and Interact Clubs of Holy Spirit held a truly meaningful celebration of the Araw ng Kabataan last Saturday, Feb 19, at the Gilarmi covered court in the Barangay. They brought cheers to about 700 kids from their host community through a program of mass feeding, games & contests with prizes, and a movie marathon. The clubs fund raising activity was timed with this day-long event.

District Governor Pablo Ambo Gancayco inked an agreement with RCHS and ALAGAD Party-List President Diogenes Osabel for the development of www.alagad.com.ph, a pro-poor knowledge and information portal designed for barangay and community leaders. The project will set up a system for regular information exchange and linkages between cooperating public information nodes (Rotary Clubs, government agencies, LGUs, NGOs, schools and companies with computer/s and internet access) and Community-Based Organizations. Dr Bong and PE Ped Condeno (left photo above) represented the Club at the InterCity Club meeting held last July 13th. This was co-hosted with seven other clubs in the District. The theme was, Volunteerism: Rotarians Taking the Lead. Guest speaker Mr Richard Gordon reminded attendees that volunteerism involves giving service and asking nothing in return. He exemplified the challenges of organizing and leading volunteer workers based on his experience as City Mayor of Olongapo during the Mt Pinatubo eruption in 1992.

Nov 6RC Holy Spirit supported district fundraising project

The Globalroom Dancing, a fund-raising event of the District 3780 Spouses last Nov 6th was a huge success. The dance hall was filled to the brim with Rotarians and guests dancing the night away to the music of the renown Nonoy Lopez Band. RCHS Rotarians Peth Rivera, Marlene Martinez, Charing Gerochi and Marcia Salvador came with their friends in support of the project. IPP Linda also arrived after another engagement. Funds generated by the event will be used to help furnish the Global Lounge whose construction was undertaken at the instance of AG Rencie Padernal.

Pres Dodgie Osabel, Dr Eui Bong Jung and Rtn Peth Rivera represented RC Holy Spirit during the Awards night last Nov 4th. Nov 24RCHS joined call for action to end gender violence The Rotary Day of Action to end violence against women and children was held last Nov 24 at the Rotary Center. The district event kicked off the 16-day worldwide campaign spearheaded by the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Womens Global Leadership Institute based in University of Rutgers in NJ. The event also emphasized Rotarys commitment to help promote womens and childrens rights as prescribed by Republic Act 9262. Our RC Holy Spirit delegation consisted of President Dodgie, PE Ped, IPP Linda, Treas Marcia, TRF Chair Dr Bong and Secretary JR.

Feb 22RC Holy Spirit joins supplemental polio immunization drive of District 3780
A 14-man contingent from RCHS led by Pres Dodgie and Rotaract Club led by Pres James Lorenzo lent support to the Districts Supplemental Immunization at Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City last February 22, 2011. They were part of some 85 teams composed of a health worker and two Rotarian/Rotaractor volunteers per team that distributed oral polio vaccines door-to-door in slum areas within the barangay. The goal was to immunize some 8,000 kids (ages 6 months to 5 years old) from the dreaded poliomyelitis. The drive was a partnership project of RI District 3780 with the QC Mayors Office, Department of Health, QC Health Department, Barangay Tatalon Council and Health Center, and the World Health Organization. The DOH donated the vaccines while the QC Health Dept and barangay health center provided the health workers. The project supports Rotarys commitment to End Polio Now!

Free FBS monitoring service continues

The monthly free FBS monitoring service for diabetics and diabetes-prone members of the community was held last April 30, 2011 at the Don Antonio Heights Wellness Center. This is a project of Health & Wellness Chair PP Dr Roger Belleza and is being undertaken with the sponsorship of the Natrapharm-Patriot Group, and support from the Don Antonio Heights Homeowners Association. Last Sept 15, PP Atty Francis Rivera, District 3780 Chair of the Membership Development Committee, shared valuable ideas on the recruitment and retention of members. He said that it is important to enhance the image of the club to attract prospective members. Service projects must be carefully planned and implemented where members can actively participate and find relevance. Members should be made to experience not only the opportunity to serve but, more importantly, the chance to fellowship with one another. PP Francis also said that RIs priority is the recruitment of women and young people into Rotary service. Lastly, PP Francis committed to help in the Clubs recruitment efforts.

In his talk before the officers , members and prospective members of RC Holy Spirit last September 22, 2010, PDG Danny Fausto very eloquently explained the leadership mindset that would best support the Object of Rotary. He inferred that in Rotary, the basis of leadership is not the unequal status of superior towards subordinates, but that of being first among friends and equals. PDG Danny further suggested that the foundation of leadership is not power nor authority, but love for friends which manifests itself in service, or ones readiness to serve. Then he wove into his presentation the philosophy of servant leadership, drawing from the thoughts of well-known expert John Maxwell. In his presentation, PDG Danny took occasion to explain Rotary and Rotary membership to the guests, and why it would be best for them to join Rotary via RC Holy Spirit in the neighbourhood. PDG Danny in effect reinforced the effort of District Membership Chair PP Francis Rivera who had actually persuaded three of his friends to attend the meeting and eventually join RC Holy Spirit.

Dr Bong leads learning session with Rotarians

Oct 20. With members of the RC Holy Spirit as avid audience, Rtn Dr Eui Bong Jung presented a classification talk on what Rotarians should know about aspects of Korean history and culture including language, family traditions and where to go for Korean cuisine. Dr Bong, Chair of The Rotary Foundation of the Club, and his family have been residents of the community for the last five years. Dr Bong is an Acupuncturist and Doctor of Oriental Medicine certified by the Philippine Institute of Traditional & Alternative Healthcare of the Department of Health. Dr Bong is an active member of the Korean business community in QC.

The memorable event last Oct 13 was held at IPP Lindas place. Members had fun eating, singing and exchanging pleasantries. Rtn Peth Rivera brought a tempting home-baked chocolate cake which even the diabetics could not resist sampling. CP Nides who had just returned from Nepal serenaded all with his harmonica. The fellowship was capped by the raffling off of a DVD player, a prize solicited by Rtn Atty Ed Valbuena. The lucky winner was Rtn Dr Marlene Martinez. Congratulations, Marlene! During the meeting last Nov 3, Club Admin Chair Ric Salvador explained and demonstrated the new features of the electronic version of The Dove, our news bulletin that is e-mailed to members and several hundred other addressees here and abroad weekly. The desired outcome is to make our club ebulletin more information-laden and fun to read by embedding links to multi-media content of selected web sites, such as those suggested by the RI President.

RC Holy Spirit ended 2010 on a high note !

Jan 15RC Holy Spirit and Rotaract Club members participated in first team-building exercise
A team-building session was held in the afternoon of January 15 with the young Rotaractors and grown-up Rotarians as participants. The program had been designed and facilitated by Rtn Engr Joe del Rosario with the assistance of his spouse, Dra Naty. The participants were divided into three (3) groups who were given challenging and enjoyable assignments & exercises that helped demonstrate the value of teamwork. Rtn Joe stressed that to develop team spirit, it is important for each member to commit, cooperate, collaborate, face up to the challenge, and develop camaraderie. Present during the twin activities last Saturday were Pres Dodgie, IPP Linda, PE Ped, Treas Marcia, Rtns Baby, Lowell and Peth, nine (9) Rotaractors, and Engr Joe & Dra Naty.

All had a great time singing, wining & dining, dancing, playing games, exchanging gifts, and simply enjoying each others company. Rotary International has authorized RC Holy Spirit to join and support the RI Boards strategic goal to foster club innovation and flexibility, by implementing, experimenting with, and evaluating the impact of the Associate Member pilot program beginning July 1, 2011. The notification from RI is reproduced here on page 2. On what basis were we selected?
