HEART OF DARKNESS: AN OPINION Marlows journey to Africa opens his mind and heart to certain realities about the Africans. He sees the Africans as almost equals to animals. There is absolutely no differentiation between the dark animals and dark people. In Africa, there are no laws to enforce equality and he observes that the society is free to act naturally and corruptively. He considers that there is corruption and racism underlying in the hearts of all humans. Africans are anything but pleasant. His description of And so, he feels with bitterness and

regret with this observations as he sees the distinctions between savagery and civilization. He observed that the white people are looked up to but for him, those who look the most civilized are actually the most savage. A man who used to be fulfilled materialistically but his heart does not lust for power and material growth over love and compassion is likely what the society like the Philippines needs. There are those in power and wealth are always looked up to in almost all aspects while those oppressed and suffering from poverty are put aside or even neglected. Recognition is awarded to those who are in power and wealth and yet have great concern to those who are need. The Philippines needs these people to fight its social problems. In the darkness of the landscape can lead to the darkness of social corruption, it suggests how the environment affects man and have become a victim to his environment.Man learn how to behave through their environment. The environment can add to our loneliness, and it is from these feelings that we can reflect on our human condition and what the environment around can do to us. Our perception to our environment gives us a deeper insight of our personal attitude towards others. We learn from examples as well as through challenging experiences. Behavior learned can either be good or bad and it is up to us to decide what behavior we want in

life. Others may be happy with their behavior and see nothing wrong with it. However, many may not see how their environment affects them and have become victim to their environment. In my personal experience, Ilearned to looked up to and have high regard and respect to all those in power during my younger years in the province. But in my growing years of study in Manila, gradually I observed that not all those in power is worthy of such high regard and respect. I observed that their greed of society and lust of power s stronger that their ability to love. As we partly a product of our own society, we can also effect change in the our society. While we learn from our challenging experiences, we and learn from bad behavior and should continue our good behavior and progress of the society.
