Why some children commit crimes

ome children commit crimes because of poverty and peer pressure. But that is not an excuse to do wrong things. Willington Ssekadde, Raising Voices says: Some children want to be like their bad friends to fit in the group. Some children learn bad things like stealing after watching bad movies on television. Be happy with what you have and who you are.

Some children take marijuana and alcohol. This makes them steal and even run away from school. They end up joining bad groups

may where they m get arrested. My friend stole a chicken and was Mbale taken to Mb Remand home.

Not fearing God

Nafuna Janet, 12, Nampanga PS, Sironko, says: Children brought up in families with no religion dont fear God. They dont follow the ten Commandments. When they grow up, they risk their life by doing wrong things like not respecting elders and fighting.

Alcohol and drugs.

Agodai Irene, 13, P5, Majengo PS, Soroti says:

mindful of your friends. Do not copy bad things from them. Listen to your parents. They know what is good and bad for you. Parents wish you well. Be satisfied with the little you have. Avoid wanting to be like others. Fear God.

Girls, know your body

Monthly Periods
Have you started your monthly periods? Girls are often shocked when they start their monthly periods. The scientific term is menstruation. This is when blood flows from the vagina. There is nothing wrong with you when this happens. Do not worry, you are just growing up. However, it is not a sign to start sex. When you start menstruation it means you can easily get pregnant if you have sex. Ask your parent or guardian to help you. If you have not started yet and your friends have, do not worry. Yours will come.

You can change

A remand home gives children a chance to change. Immaculate Nanjala, a programme officer at Naguru remand home says: Boys are taught carpentry, art and craft, chapatti making, gardening and shaving. Girls are taught tailoring, chapatti making, mat and table cloth making. If you have a friend who was arrested and he or she is out, you can still be friends. Be good to them. People can change to become better persons. I was arrested because of taking drugs. I feel bad that I am here. I have lost all my friends. If I go back home their parents may not allow them to be with me. I miss my family and school. Boy 14

Snakes and ladders

Play the game and learn how to avoid crime
How to play: Get a dice and bottle tops. Throw the dice on the board in turns. The first to get six dots up the dice starts to play. Start from square 1. Each player moves the bottle-top according to the number of dots seen after the dice is thrown on board. For example if four dots show up, move four steps ahead.

If you land at the bottom of the ladder, read the words aloud to your friends and move your bottle-top up the ladder. If you land on the snake head, you have been bitten by the snake. Read the words aloud. Move down until you reach the tail of the snake. You will continue from this point to move upwards when your turn comes. If you enter a square taken by another player, it means you have eaten him or her. He or she has to start again from square 1. If you land on a square with words only, stop and read the words. Talk about them with your friends before you continue. The first person to reach FINISH point is the winner.

FOR TEACHERS:

Are your pupils reading Young Talk?

Young Talk is received by a particular teacher. When he receives the copies he distributes to the P5, P6 and P7 class-teachers. Children read and discuss with teachers and among themselves. They also ask questions and put them in the suggestion boxes. Every class has a suggestion box made from chalk boxes.

The questions are collected and answered at the assembly either by pupils or teachers. We also encourage pupils to take Young Talk and read with their parents. We want parents to pick interest in Young Talk. Teachers first read Young Talk before it is given to pupils. This helps teachers advise the pupils from an informed point of view. Dear

If she continues asking you for sex, report her to a teacher or tell any trusted adult. Is it true that a pregnant woman can not get HIV? Kato Moses, Kiboga PS No, it is not true. A pregnant woman can get HIV just like any other person. HIV is got when you have sex with an infected person. You can also get HIV if you have a wound or cut and you touch fluids of an infected person like semen, vaginal fluids or blood. That open wound or cut provides HIV with a door to enter your body. I missed my menstruation periods last month. My friends told me that I am pregnant. What is the cause? AK, 14, Kyamiza PS, Kasese Did you have sex with any one? If you did not have sex then, it is normal for an adolescent girl like you to miss menstruation. You are still going through body changes. Sometimes the types of food one eats and changing the environment in which they live may cause them to miss their periods.Do not worry, your periods will start coming every month as you grow older. I share a desk with someone who is HIV positive. My friends say I will also get the virus. Is it true? NP, Revival PS, Matuga, Wakiso NP, you can not get HIV from sitting next to an infected person or sharing with them. But avoid sharing sharp objects like razor blades and needles. Counsellor: Dr Paul Semogoma, International Hospital Kampala.

Iam aged 15. I have started my monthly periods but some times they take a few days. Sometimes, it takes more days. This makes me worried. What advice can you give me? Stella Inyaa, Panyanga PS, Moyo Dont worry, your body is still growing that is why your monthly periods do not always come. Sometimes it is due to change of food diets, environment or worries. Your body will be stable as you grow and you will have normal and regular periods. My friend told me that when your breasts are facing down and are not pointed (fall down) it means that you had sex with a boy. Is it true? Adiru Prossy, Muni PS, Arua No, it is not true. It is just a sign that you are growing up. Dont take whatever your friend tells you because she/he is still young like you. She has little understanding of most things. Always ask your mother or someone you trust what you do not understand. Iam 13, I hate sex but there is a girl who asks me for sex. What should I do? Tusiime M, Mbarara PS Continue saying NO to this girl.

From class some children run to the toilets and after the toilets, they rush to buy mandazi from the canteen and just eat. Do you know that is a bad practice? It can lead to diseases like diarrhea and many others. Hand washing is the best way to fight dangerous germs. Washing hands every time prevents diseases.
