Address Key Test Requirements in Mobile Networks

To ensure positive return-on-investment on all mobile network components and related technologies, both the development and deployment of such components require thorough testing at the functional level. At a later stage in the testing cycle, generating load both in terms of control plane and user plane traffic towards the Device Under Test becomes a key requirement. The Tektronix K1297-G35 Protocol Tester allows you to address key testing applications driven by such needs:
Functional tests of specific protocol layers, entire network nodes or even network subsystems in order to verify correct implementation. The K1297-G35 offers flexible protocol configuration mechanisms and a wide range of programming and scripting tools that allow you to define test cases on an abstract level as well as on a detailed Protocol level Interoperability testing between different access and core network technologies to verify the feasibility of new services Specific capacity testing applications, for instance if you want to verify the ability of specific network nodes (such as the SGSN) to handle the signaling traffic related to a large numbers of subscribers

Emulation Tools The K1297-G35 also addresses the need for emulation of specific Protocol layers or entire network elements and network subsystems. This will enable you to test protocol implementations without the need to resort to the resources of expensive network equipment. Monitoring Tools The K1297-G35 offers Monitoring capabilities that will enable you to address the specific needs of functional testing applications and help visualize message exchanges between the Protocol Tester and the DUT (Device Under Test). Sophisticated filters can be used to reduce the data received to the desired essential results. The K1297-G35 provides several display formats; message components are decoded online, interpreted and issued in mnemonic as well as binary or hexadecimal form. Record Viewer Each K1297-G35 offers offline analysis of record files with the same features as are available online; for example, filtering capabilities. Record Viewer with analysis is also available for use on a PC.

A Flexible, High-performance Protocol Testing Platform

The K1297-G35 Protocol Tester will provide you with a flexible modular highperformance hardware and software platform to address the required protocol testing applications. The same protocol tester software is available on two different hardware platforms: a portable platform especially focused on functional test applications, and a rackmount-based system which is targeting primarily largescale capacity and load testing applications. A broad range of interface modules and software packages have already been developed and are available likewise for both hardware platforms. These allow testing of most interfaces in mobile core and access networks.

Architecture Combines Configurability with High Performance

The K1297-G35 hardware architecture separates the real-time measurement functions including message encoding and decoding from user and data handling functions such as test case generation tools. Dedicated test boards are available for time-critical protocol analysis functions. The K1297-G35 utilizes both in the portable and rackmount version a Compact PCI (cPCI) bus system with five, respectively 12, free slots that enable a wide variety of configuration options. One additional slot is dedicated to the PC host board. This board contains a high-performance Intel-based processor with a minimum of 1 GB RAM. The host board possesses multiple Interfaces for peripheral devices or external networks. These include 4 x USB 2.0, an external DVI-I connector and 4 Gigabit Ethernet Interfaces with backward compatibility to 10/100Base-T. The high-performance PC host board significantly reduces among others system configuration load times (by up to 80%) compared with previous models, thus improving e.g., the efficiency of automated testing applications.

The standard K1297-G35 portable version features a high-contrast SXGAcompatible color TFT display and a keyboard. The rackmount version supports standard peripheral devices such as an external screen, a mouse (DVI-I) and a keyboard (PS/2 or USB 2.0). The built-in Ethernet adapter makes the K1297-G35 available for remote control use in a network. The USB slots can accommodate various Interfaces and extensions (e.g., WLAN or mass storage devices). The operating system is WinXP Embedded.
A Wide Range of Measurement and Test Interface Boards

The K1297-G35 base units may be equipped with a variety of test boards for Protocol Testing applications. Available Test hardware includes cPCI bus cards for E1/T1, interfaces for broadband E1/T1 ATM and STM1/OC3 ATM, as well as a Gigabit (1000Base-T) Ethernet board.

Powerful and Easy-to-Use Software Tools for Test Case Development

The base software available with the K1297-G35 protocol tester offers a wide range of powerful tools for the development of test cases. Any test case development will require the definition of an emulation scenario. Such scenarios consist of one or more emulation stacks providing complete protocol layer emulation. Currently, more than 100 different protocol layer emulation stacks are available for the K1297-G35. Depending on the specific optional software packages deployed, control plane and user plane traffic can be generated through several different methods. On the user plane side, traffic may be generated based on local files stored on the instrument (e.g., speech files). The packet generator allows for the generation of dummy packets, whereas the packet gate allows the user to send to the DUT traffic emanating from an external source, e.g., from an FTP server.

Elements of an Emulation Scenario.

On the control plane side, signaling traffic can be generated using user/terminal emulations. The call generator can be used to generate standard signaling traffic for a large number of users, which is particularly useful for capacity and load test applications. For func-

tional test applications, user-defined Message Sequence Charts can be embedded into the emulation scenario to cover, e.g., non-standard protocol behavior, in order, e.g., to test the DUTs ability to handle erroneous signaling traffic.

The Emulation Scenario Editor (ESE), which is used to define these tasks, offers in the Diagram View a flexible and easy-to-use process to configure the K1297-G35 hardware according to a given protocol stack and test configuration. The individual Simulations/ Emulations can be configured in the Parameter View, which allows among others users to trigger actions such as sending specific protocol messages to the DUT. The Message Building System (MBS) allows you to create message templates that will be sent or compared graphically with received messages. The result is a message pool that can be used by Message Sequence Charts. You can send messages defined in a message pool directly via/to a layer emulation for interactive testing, as well as for individual error intrusion.

The Message Sequence Chart (MSC) is a key tool for defining test cases in a graphical format, and can support test scenarios from the very simple to the most complex. It does so by placing messages, timers, loops and other elements in a self-documenting message flow chart. The messages are simply selected from a message pool and dragged to the proper position in the flow chart. An alternative means of defining test cases lies in the usage of the FORTH Script Interpreter, which is a language that supports iterative interactive test script development. Commands are executed instantly as you are typing them. FORTH Scripts can also be combined with MSCs.

Beyond these tools, the K1297-G35 protocol tester can be remote-controlled using the remote operation package which features the test synchronization protocol 1+(TSP1+) and CORBA (Common Object Request Broker Architecture). It contains primitives and messages to remotely manage a complete Test session. An offline PC development environment can also be provided as an optional package, which allows you to develop test programs without using the actual test hardware. All the basic test case development tools (including ESE, MBS and MSC) are supported by this offline software, as well as a record playback function to analyze in offline mode record files generated from previous test sessions.
