VICTORY ON THE BRINK OF EIGHTH WORLD TITLE

02

PARSONAGE STICKS WITH MOORE

The race for the Class 1 World Powerboat Championship is, barring some extraordinary calamity, a two-boat race. But the one remaining question is which outfit Victory 1 or Victory 7 will lift the Dubai Teams eighth World crown in sixteen years. Victorys record is quite remarkable; they won their first world title in their debut season in 1993, took back-to-back titles in 1995 and 1996 and a hat-trick of titles from 1999 to 2001. The next five years saw their great rivals, Spirit of Norway, dominate, but they regained their crown last year and are well and truly on course to add another. Over the last sixteen years and from 128 starts, Victory has won 63 Grands Prix, finished second 63 times and third 47 times. They have finished first and second 18 times and completed a clean sweep of the podium on no less than eight occasions. In addition to their current seven World titles, they have won the European Championship five times, the Middle East title twice and have qualified quickest 39 times to win five Pole Position Championships.

Chris Parsonage has confirmed that he will run the final two races in Dubai with American throttleman, Billy Moore, retained to take the sticks in Negotiator following the Anglo-American pairings impressive third place in their first outing together in the Egyptian Grand Prix in Porto Marina in October. Billy, the son of American racing legend, Bobby Moore, made his race debut in America in 1994 and over the last 15 years has competed in the APBA-SBI and OSS Superboat Championships, winning the APBA-SBI title in 1996 and the OSS title in 2006.

VICTORY WORLD CHAMPIONS

1993 K Harib (UAE) / E Colyer (US) 1995 S Al Tayer (UAE) / F Serralles (PR) 1996 S Al Tayer (UAE) / F Serralles (PR) At the beginning of 2008 the International Offshore Team Association (IOTA) reached an agreement with the Qatar Marine Sports Federation (QMSF) to launch Class 1 for Dhreima an initiative to support the Qatar Orphan Foundation. Sheikh Hassan Bin Jabor Al-Thani, President of the QMSF and IOTA, was instrumental in encouraging Class 1 a sport in which he has been a leading figure since 2003 to become an active vehicle to raise awareness of the foundation. In presenting this initiative I wanted to emphasise how sport, in whatever form or however extreme, can support the values and the importance of the activities of an organisation such as the Qatar Orphan Foundation. During the course of the year, the association between Class 1 and Dhreima developed a series of activities and events that took place at races, with the purpose of highlighting the activities of Dhreima and finding synergy with similar organisations based in countries that host Class 1 GP events. The Qatar Orphan Foundation - Dhreima was launched on 10, June 2003 under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Moza Bint Nasser Al-Misnad, Chairman of the Supreme Council. We in the Qatari Orphan Foundation believe that our community values of solidarity, compassion and cooperation make us truly capable of providing all the support the children need, said Nabil Ali Bin Ali, Chairman of the Dhreima Board, adding. and we are extremely happy that the Class 1 Championship has elected to support the Foundation. 1999 A Nasser (UAE) / R Scism (US) 2000 A Nasser (UAE) / K Harib (UAE) 2001 M Al Marri (UAE) / S Al Tayer (UAE) 2007 A Al Zafeen (UAE) / JM Sanchez (FR)

BARRY-COTTER AND NILSEN TO SHOWCASE NEW MARITIMO IN DUBAI

Tom Barry-Cotter and Pal Virik Nilsen will take time out from the defence of their Australian Offshore Superboat title to compete in Dubai, and will showcase the newest Class 1 spec raceboat, designed and built by Australias premiere manufacturer of long-range luxury motoryachts, Maritimo. The young Australian-Norwegian partnership made their Class 1 debut in Athens in 2007, ending the season with four top-six finishes; they then headed down under to compete in the Australian Championship, where they proved to be the best, winning five out of six races to lift the Australian Offshore Superboat title. They returned to race in Class 1 in Arendal, Norway, earlier this year, finishing sixth, before starting the defence of their Australian title with a win. Designed by Bill Barry-Cotter, the new Maritimo catamaran is built in line with the rule changes that will come into effect in January 2009 regarding the eligibility of new builds being allowed into the championship based on the same power-to-weight ratio as existing boats. It is 13.35m long, 3.495m wide with a minimum weight of 4100kgs and will be powered by two Mercury 790hp V8s.

MONTAVOCI LOOKING TO FINISH WITH BEST SEASON POINTS TALLY

Foresti & Suardi has proved to be one of the most reliable outfits this season, and throttleman and team boss Giampaolo Montavoci is looking to end the year with a flourish in Dubai. I have two targets. To finish all the races this season and to take more than 60 points, he said. We will run with modified SCAM engines, new propellers and a different exhaust system, with the complete package put together to give us better acceleration. But of course, running a new set-up comes with a little risk. In their first full season together, Montavoci and his Norwegian driver, Kolbjorn Selmer, have finished fifth four times, sixth once and took their best result of the year, fourth place, in the last race in Porto Marina, Egypt. The Italian-Norwegian pairing are currently lying sixth in the World Championship standings, 14 points behind Jotun, and fourth equal in the Middle East Championship with Negotiator, but aim to end the season as the best-placed European outfit.

he Dubai International Marine Club celebrates twenty years of staging topflight watersports events with two races in ten days that will decide the outcome of the Class 1 World and Middle East Powerboat Championships and the Edox Pole Position Championship. Dubais Victory Team will be looking to wrap up their eighth World Championship in the Mina Seyahi Grand Prix, the penultimate race of the season on Saturday, 6 December, by bringing both their boats home ahead of their Qatari rivals, who still pose a mathematical but improbable outside threat to their title. Four wins this season for Victory 1 and five podium finishes for Victory 7 have put the Dubai boats respectively 33 and 18 points clear of Abdullah Al-Sulaiti and Matteo Nicolini in Qatar 95 and in an almost unassailable position, with the luxury of an in-house fight for the title. A win for Victory 1 will all but give Mohammed Al Marri his second World title and Nadir Bin Hendi his first. But if Victory 7s rookie driver Abdullah Al Mehairbi and defending World Champion, Jean-Marc Sanchez, take the win and their teammates finish outside the top three, the title race will go to the wire and be decided in the Emirates and Dubai Duty Free Grand Prix on Saturday, 13 December. Qatars flickering title hopes rest with both Victory outfits breaking and posting only a handful of points in both races, so realistically, they will be fighting each

other for third place in the overall Championship standings, with both the Qatar 95 crew and Sheikh Hassan and Steve Curtis in Qatar 96 looking for their first wins of the season, whilst Jotuns Inge Brigt Aarbakke and Jorn Tandberg will be hoping for a return to winning ways, with the 2008 European Champions aiming to finish the season as the top European outfit in the overall standings and the Edox Pole Position Championship. The target for Foresti & Suardis Italian-Norwegian pairing of Montavoci and Selmer, who currently head the middle order, is to continue their season-long run of reliability, complete the season without any technical hitches and to finish as the highest-placed European team in the Middle East Championship, but to do so, first they must fend of the challenge from Chris Parsonage and Billy Moore in Negotiator - currently tied with them in fourth place. SeveneleveNs Giorgio Manuzzi and Nicola Giorgi will be looking to complete their season of development as they started, by taking their third top-six finish of the year. Domenico Cirilli returns to competitive duties after missing the last race to partner Sergio Carrasco for his first outing in Spirit of Spain, with Giovanni Carpitella switching to partner Class 1 rookie, Abdelkader Ahmed in Roscioli Hotels Roma. And the 2007/8 Australian Offshore Superboat Champions, Tom BarryCotter and Pal Virik Nilsen, make their second appearance of the year and will showcase the newest Class 1 spec raceboat, designed and built by Australias premiere manufacturer of long-range luxury motoryachts, Maritimo.

THE METROPOLIS OF THE MIDDLE EAST

rom the timeless tranquillity of the desert to the lively bustle of the souk, to the calm waters of the Arabian Gulf, the Emirate of Dubai offers a kaleidoscope of activities for visitors and residents. Lying on the blue waters of the southern Gulf and backing onto the majestic desert, Dubai offers visitors year-round sunshine and five-star luxury... plus the adventure of a unique Arabian experience. Dubai one of the seven emirates which constitute the United Arab Emirates is a place of fascinating contrasts, a distinctive blend of a modern city and timeless desert, east and west, old and new. A century ago, it was a tranquil town whose coral-and-gypsum huts housed Bedouin traders and pearl divers. Today, commerce is truly international and science-fiction skyscrapers stand alongside the mosques and wind towers of old Dubai. Dubai has many jewels in its crown, not least the unparalleled architectural innovations that confirm Dubai as a world leader; from the Burj Al Arab, the Palm Islands developments and The World a series of man-made islands in the shape of the continents to what will perhaps become Dubais most symbolic structure, the Burj Dubai, the worlds tallest building. Dubai is a dynamic international business centre as well as a laid-back tourist escape; it is a city where the sophistication of the 21st century walks hand in hand with the simplicity of a bygone era, where a diversity of activities have given it its unique flavour and personality: a cosmopolitan society with a culture deeply rooted in the traditions of Arabia.

ADVERTORIAL

In 1990, Mr. Saeed Hareb and Mr. Saif Al Shaffar were given the responsibility to develop traditional, as well as modern watersports events. Because of the nature of his relationship with the sea, which is based on experience, expertise and his family background, Saeed Hareb was appointed Managing Director of the marine club.

The home of Watersports in Dubai

In the late 1970s, HH the late Sheikh Rashid Bin Saeed Al Maktoum had the vision of having three distinctive areas in the Emirate of Dubai. His foresight led to the creation of the Jebel Ali Free Zone as the industrial area, Mina Seyahi was to cater for the tourists pleasures hence Mina Seyahi and the central area of Dubai was to serve as the residential locality. In 1988, the Dubai Marine Club was formed to promote watersports in Dubai. Resources were limited at the time and traditional races were organised with the help of volunteers and official partners in the government.

Mina Seyahi had a natural slipway for the launching of boats and dhows and it was the vision of HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum that brought about the transformation of the area into a modern Marina, enabling yacht owners to moor their boats. In 1994, the vision of HH the late Sheikh Maktoum Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai, saw the official creation, through a formal decree, of the Dubai International Marine Club (DIMC). DIMC was declared the only watersports body authorised to organise watersports activities and competitions in the Emirate of Dubai. On 5th October 2003, the Rulers Court appointed HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum as its Chairman, with a Higher Council to take care of the daily activities of the Club. Ever since, the Club has gone from strength to strength: it was the first Arabic organisation to be accorded full membership of the world governing body for motorised watersports Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) - the International Sailing Federation (ISAF), the International Canoeing Federation (ICF) and the International Rowing Council (IRC). Over the years, Mina Seyahi Dubai - DIMC has organised several national and international events that have won them acclaim and awards as Best Organiser. The infrastructure at DIMC is on a par with any other international watersports body. Why is it called Mina Seyahi Dubai? Mina Seyahi, meaning pleasure harbour has, over the years, witnessed an unprecedented number of local and international watersports events that have rightfully earned it the title of The home of Watersports in Dubai. From its humble beginnings as a small harbour, Mina Seyahi has grown to accommodate a fully-fledged leisure hub, featuring a 295-berth Marina, the Le Meridien Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina and the spectacular The Westin Dubai, Mina Seyahi Beach Resort & Marina. The branding of the Mina Seyahi Dubai, and the introduction of The Westin Hotel, mark a new era in this remarkable piece of real estate, which is destined to further define the future of watersports in Dubai. The Mina Seyahi Dubai is a division of DIMC (Dubai International Marine Club), the official authority for watersports in the UAE.
