1 INTERPRETATION OF DEPENDABILITY OBSERVATION MESSAGES 1.1 What is dependability observation

Dependability observation provides a log of all the systems defense actions. This function is handled by central defense which records the information relating to the systems defense actions. For each defense action, central defense records one or more events so that the source of the action can be stored and the procedure monitored. Each basic event contains the following information: Event number: characterizes the defense action. Date and time. Identification of the item concerned, usually a station. The state of the item before the defense action. Additional information: usually this is the message originating the defense action. The events are stored in an OM file. This is a circular file, with new events overwriting the oldest ones. The file is used to keep a record of one or more months. This log is operated using the SRFIL command. SRFIL parameters define the criteria for searching the log. You can therefore search for a type of event, events occurring in a particular timeband, or events relating to a station.

1.2 When to use SRFIL

To analyze the stability of a site This way, you can ascertain the number of station crashes in a given period, the type of station concerned, and the origin and you can generate statistics and check whether the system complies with operating standards. This information may also be useful before extending a site or installing a new version. To analyze a site incident After the fact, you can reconstruct the scenario of the incident, determine its origin and duration and establish a correlation between the events and other manifestations of the incident (alarms, etc). To send information to the manufacturer When an incident requires the manufacturers intervention, the log provides the basic information sent to the manufacturer for analysis.

1.3 How to use SRFIL

1.3.1 Online help The SRFIL command provides a minimal online help facility which gives the general syntax of the command and the event codes. To obtain help, execute the SRFIL command (see FOP <SRFIL>) before the HELP parameter.

1.3.3 Outputting additional information When the log is interrogated, all events matching the criteria specified in the SRFIL parameters are listed in a format which gives the date and time, the number and description of the event, the address of the station concerned, its state and the list of MLs assigned to it. If you enter DBG=H1 as an SRFIL command option, you also obtain the events output header in hexadecimal code. You can then access the manufacturers additional information. 1.3.4 List of events 0 Station taken out of service on fault. Indicates that a station has been automatically taken out of service. 2 DETAILED ANALYSIS OF THE INFORMATION OUTPUT BY SRFIL DBG=H1

For a detailed analysis of the events the additional information must be decoded. The additional information usually comes from an OCB283 message received or sent by central defense. The table below gives the codm codes of the messages stored. It is from codm that the additional information can be analyzed. CODM 0000 Name XDRQ Purpose of message Command request Relating to the ESMMO, SMTL and CHNMO commands. SM state positioning request Used to initialize, position a system, activate locavar tests. This is a message sent by central defense. End of positioning deferred message Signals the end of station initialization or positioning. Deferred response to a test positioning request Indicates the end of the locavar tests. Timeout Adapter out of service diagnostic message Take out of service request sent by the ring manager at the end of testing a ring using AMXMO. Inconsistent state signal Take out of service request sent by the MLOC when a stations internal state does not match the state given in the FTET file. Load state broadcast Indicates a change in the systems load state. Internal inconsistency signal Request to take the active SMM out of service. This message may come from the LCC in the absence of a message (serious coupler fault) or from the ML OC when it detects a large number of state inconsistencies or SM inaccessible occurrences. SM positioning internal request This message is used: By the anomaly statistics handling process to indicate that the statistics counters have overflowed. By an ML to ask for another ML to be taken out of service (eg: PUPE penalty posting by the PC). By the MLOC to indicate that a station is inaccessible; usually this involves a serious fault, not indicated by the station, or a main coupler failure (power supply, etc). Change of state indication Message sent every time an ML changes state. Service instance state change Message sent every time a server instance changes state.

Purpose of message SM positioning request This message is sent by a stations local defense to indicate: A serious fault (selfpositioning). A soft fault. A permanent abnormal overload. Load event trace SM system blocked transition signal This message indicates the end of an SM returning to PROM. If the station was in service, it is a serious fault not indicated by the station. Terminationrelated event This message is used by the ETU handler to indicate events relating to the ETUs. Central defense initializing This message appears every time the active SMM is initialized; it follows an SMM switchover on an operator request or a fault. Synchronization This message indicates the end of network initialization. Central defense internal message Used for a dump, change of release or change of system state. Configuration modification indication Indicates a reconfiguration on a standby station, a creation or deletion of an SM.

The message indicates a central defense timeout. The timer that has timed out is associated with the event it caused. A central defense timer is associated with: monitoring of an action (initialization, LOCAVAR, positioning, etc), periodic functions (standby station locavar, total failure supervision, etc), execution of the general procedure (general initialization, general restart, broadcast, etc).

2.9 CODM=AF23 (ODICH)

This message indicates a change of a stations loading state. The ODICH and OTECH messages are numbered when they pass through the SMMs MIS coupler but are not all registered. Consequently, only the start of an overload can normally be determined. When analyzing the message, the number of each message must be taken into account. The OTECH messages give additional information on the source of the overload. 2.9.1 Example a) Standard format

2.14 CODM=AF61 (ORPOS)

This message is sent by the ML SM to central defense to indicate a serious or soft fault in the station. For a serious fault, the station returns to prom. This is a selfpositioning. For a soft fault, central defense stops the station by positioning it to INDL and then BLO. Message AF61 originates from a hardware fault, software fault or an event outside the station. To determine the origin of the station shutdown: analyze the result of the LOCAVAR tests, correlate the shutdown with an external event (converters, multiplex, network fault), collect the information if it is a software fault (use the DPMIL command; on SMB, the SITSFG area (FZDEF file of ZSM) of the dump gives the context of the shutdown).

2.15 CODM=AF63 (OTECH)

This message is a trace of a change of load state. The ODICH and OTECH messages are numbered when they pass through the SMMs MIS coupler but are not all registered. Consequently, only the start of an overload can normally be determined. When analyzing the message, the number of each message must be taken into account. The OTECH messages give additional information on the origin of the overload. 2.15.1 Example 001122/11 H 19 MN 19 EVT=26 :LOAD MODIFICATION /AM = SMC2 STT.=ES AF=TR2+MQ2+GX2+PCB / 021A 0011 2211 1919 0305 010A 0109 017D 0151 0000 0000 0000 / 11AF 6301 5101 0201 0100 01C9 9C00 242D 0151 02C9 0093 2.15.2 Coding of the additional information / 11AF 6301 5101 0201 0100 01C9 9C00 242D 0151 02C9 0093 asml : 8 System address of the overloaded ML TSAP of the overloaded TCA (for ndch ETU) apsm (9), rgtu (7) SMB group (5) rgtu (7) rget (4)
