incolns Mario Balderas is one busy man with three businesses in full operation in Lincoln. First and most visible is Freedom Rides, a motorcycle and trike sales dealership located at 643 G St. in Lincoln that he runs with his brother, Tomas. The business opened in their newest location this past January, having formerly been located at 183 Flocchini Circle in Lincoln. Balderas also owns and operates a bookkeeping enterprise, specializing in service to the Spanishspeaking community in
Lincoln and the Greater Sacramento area. And finally, he owns a tax service as a California Registered Tax Preparer, authorized to prepare taxes for other taxpayers. All three businesses are housed in the same building, which Mario owns, at 643 G St. Arriving from Mexico with his mother in 1969, Balderas established his roots and chose to become a naturalized citizen, grow his family and develop a business career in Lincoln over the next several years. He started several small businesses and, for approximately five years, owned a music business in the Joiner
Parkway shopping Center. Balderas opened the tax preparation and bookkeeping businesses after he completed studies at Heald Business College in 1984. The motorcycle enterprise came later, growing

continued from page 5 from his passion for riding, Balderas said. On April 16, 2005, one day after tax season ended, Balderas bought a brand new Honda VTX motorcycle. A few months later, he convinced his brother he needed a motorcycle and they visited a local motorcycle dealer where his brother bought his bike. But Balderas wife
refused to ride the twowheeler. So he had the two-wheeled motorcycle converted to a threewheeler, called a trike. That conversion process took nearly eight months, according to Balderas. A couple of years of riding the trike convinced Balderas that other bike riders would be interested in conversions if they just had the chance to take a demonstration ride. And Balderas was convinced

he could produce conversions in less time than what he experienced. The idea for a new business was born. Balderas and his brother, Tomas, had long been discussing opening a business together. So they decided to blend their skills to open Freedom Rides in 2008 at 183 Flocchini Circle. His brother had the mechanical skills as an industrial mechanic to handle the details of trike conversions while he could handle sales and marketing and keep the books. Balderas wife provided additional expertise with her extensive work experience in radio sales and marketing. Freedom Rides may be the only shop in Northern California that carries demonstration trikes, according to Balderas. He

The 18th hole at Catta Verdera Country Club, the only private golf course in Lincoln. The course will host 25 charity golf tournaments this year.
incolns three golf courses are leading the way in local fund raising, continuing a tradition established by the Professional Golfers Association and numerous golf courses across the country. Professional Golf Tournament Director Joe Nemeth, who has been organizing golf tournaments for charity for more than 20 years, explained that all PGA Tour events are connected with some charitable fundraising. And discussions with local golf course officials confirm that the three Lincoln courses are actively pursuing, hosting and supporting local nonprofit fundraising efforts as well. Lincolns two public golf
courses are Lincoln Hills and Turkey Creek while Catta Verdera Country Club is private. Lincoln Hills has two 18-hole courses while Turkey Creek and Catta Verdera each have one 18hole loop. This year, the two public courses, Lincoln Hills and Turkey Creek will host approximately up to 40 charitable tournaments between them this year while Catta Verdera Country Club will be home for another 25 tournaments. Citing competitive market pressures, the public course operators were reluctant to go into detail about their tournament schedule. But they were willing to discuss their programs in general. 15 to 20 charity golf events each year, according to Brent Cohen, general manager of Empire Ranch and Turkey Creek Golf Courses. In addition, ClubCorp, the national golf course management company that manages these courses, hosts an annual event dubbed the ClubCorp Classic that raises funds for three charities the course chooses. Each course holds its own tournament with approximately 120 ClubCorp golf courses throughout the country participating in the program. In the Sacramento area, these courses include Empire Ranch, Teal Bend, Granite Bay Country Club and Turkey Creek. This year, on Nov. 2nd, Turkey Creek, Teal Bend and Empire Ranch will

donate everything they make that day to MDA, the ClubCorp Employee Partner Care Fund and a charity that is yet to be determined, Cohen said. Turkey Creek will donate to a local charity this year but we have not finalized our decision. Last year, Turkey Creek and Teal Bend donated to the First Tee of Greater Sacramento and Empire Ranch donated to Save Ourselves, which is a breast
cancer awareness group. The Lincoln Hills Golf Club, owned and operated by Billy Casper Golf, is a unique local venue because it has two 18hole loops. General manager Sean Silva noted that they expect to host between 18 and 20 charitable tournaments this year. Silva cited the Sleep Train Golf Classic scheduled for this October as one example of the tournaments the Lincoln Hills Golf Club hosts. This event is expected to completely fill both of Lincoln Hills courses. In 2010, this tournament raised more than $400,000 for foster children to continue their education after high school. Catta Verdera Country Club, the only private golf course in Lincoln, will host 25 charity golf tournaments this year, with 10 having been completed by the end of June. Curtis Landa, Catta Verderas membership and tournament sales director, pointed out that they are particularly proud of their tournaments benefiting public safety. We will have as many law enforcement events as possible, said Landa, citing the just-completed Matt Redding Memorial tournament on June 20 as an example. Redding was a popular Rocklin police officer and Del Oro High School graduate who died on duty when he was struck and killed in October 2005 by an intoxicated driver. Tournament proceeds went to the nonprofit Matt Redding Foundation, which helps support education in protective services and provides college scholarships each year to three area high school students from Rocklin, Whitney and Del Oro. Catta Verdera also hosted the Sacramento Police/Sheriff Memorial Golf Tournament on May 31. Landa noted that both law enforcement tourneys were filled. Citing a list that is not exhaustive, Landa mentioned a few other tournaments for this year that will benefit organizations

The proceeds go to Sutter Cancer Centers Breast Cancer Navigator Program, Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinsons Research, Diogenes Youth Services, Closing the Gap Educational Achievement and World Vision. So, while fundraising for nonprofit foundations has taken a hit during the recent economic downturn and struggles continue, the evidence is clear that Lincoln golf course operators are aggressively pursuing options to help fill the nonprofits treasuries. We have an inherent responsibility to give back to the community, Lincoln Hills Silva said. It makes me feel better at the end of the day. Those comments might well be applied to all those involved in organizing and directing charity golf events in Lincoln.

any outdoor animals can suffer from foxtail migrations. Foxtails may get lodged around the eyes, nose, mouth ears, coat and paws. Pet owners should be aware of the following signs, which may indicate the presence of foxtails: Eye swelling or squinting of the eye, sticky discharge Sneezing or discharge from the nose Repeated gagging or difficulty chewing or swallowing; trouble eating Bad odor from the mouth, ears or nose Head tilting, shaking or scratching at the ears Continuous licking or biting at the paws or other areas Abscesses ( puss-filled pockets ) Opens sores, which can be the remains of an open abscess but may still have a foxtail inside. At the first sign of a foxtail, you should bring your pet to a veterinarian immediately to avoid further damage from
migration of the foxtail. Dogs seem to suffer because the foxtails become imbedded in their coats. Because of their meticulous grooming habits, cats are less likely to have foxtail issues. But cats occasionally get them in the eye. Corneal damage occurs fast with this seedpod stuck under the third eyelid of the animal. All animals, including horses, are at risk of serious problems if they snort a foxtail into their nasal passages. We recommend regular grooming during the summer months. Without this, foxtails can become embedded in your animals coats, eventually piercing their skin and causing infections. The sharp end points and microscopic barbs of foxtails ensure travel in only one direction further inside the animals body. Once inside, foxtail removal becomes a surgical procedure and must be done by a veterinarian.

hinking about buying in todays market? Right now is a great time to buy. Prices have gone down dramatically and interest rates are still low. There is still a lot of inventory and many great opportunities but there are some factors you should think about before the excitement causes you to make a mistake.
Hire a professional
Although there are many good websites that give you access to numerous home listings, you should hire an agent who will work for you. Hire one who knows the area well, including school boundaries, proposed construction, HOAs, special assessments, etc. It is worth not only having someone who knows how to negotiate
Be preapproved
You need a loan officer who will educate you and help you understand the different loan options that are available. Although you may be hearing that it is a Buyers Market, the competition is stiff and you must be prepared to act quickly after a home comes on the market. Almost all sellers will require a preapproval letter with an offer.
After you decide on an area, spend some time driving around the neighborhood on different days at various times. What may seem to be a quiet neighborhood at 2 p.m. on a Tuesday may be totally different on a Friday evening. Talk to the neighbors and ask them how they like the neighborhood. Speak with your agent about the characteristics that you want in a home. A good agent will listen and wont waste your time showing you homes that you dont want. Create a detailed list of needs and wants.
questions. Know the difference between a short sale, bankowned or traditional sale and the possible challenges of each. Come up with a game plan. Talk with the agent about how you will communicate, best times for you to look at homes and let the agent know what you expect. Ask the agent what he or she expects of you as a buyer.
Think ahead
Start thinking about home inspectors and other contractors. Once you are in escrow and the appraisal has been done, it is a good idea to have a professional home inspection. On a regular sale, you could ask for repairs to be made. The cost of a home inspection can usually be recouped through the repairs you ask to be done. It can also save you from making a big mistake. This is just a short list of what you may want to think about as you begin. Do your homework and become educated before you make what is usually the biggest investment in your life.

And you can play uninhibited. The amphitheater season kicked off on June 10 with the Landsharks, a high-energy, interactive Jimmy Buffett and Beach Boys Tribute Band that played to an enthusiastic crowd of Lincolnites.
It was an amazingly fun concert, said Tamara Coil, Lincoln Hills lifestyle events and volunteer coordinator. Residents were on their feet dancing and loving the music. All positive feedback and it was a beautiful night. A Motown review, featuring the Top Shelf vocal group scheduled to continue the outdoor series on June 28, was rained out and instead performed in the Orchard Creek ballroom. A patriotic salute to the

nation opened July as the Air National Guard Band of the West presented a concert on July 1. This Moffett Federal Airfieldbased band with its jazz ensemble is one of the Air National Guards premier bands. The Summer Concert Series is open to the public with tickets from $17 to $22. Lincoln Hills residents receive a $4 discount. The Air National Guard concert on July 1 was an exception. It was free. Resident concert guests can add dinner to the package for an additional $33 per person. They eat dinner in the main ballroom prior to the concert and enjoy pre-arranged seating in the amphitheaters front middle section. The next concert features The Rhythm Vandals, a Santana Tribute Band on July 26. This group has been performing for more than 10 years. Theyll be followed by the Grascals, making a return performance to the Sun City Lincoln Hills stage with their distinctive bluegrass sounds on Aug. 18. According to Coil, this groups unique sound has become a hallmark in Nashville where the band has appeared at the Grand Ole Opry. The Buck Ford Pure Country Band takes over on Sept. 7. Buck Ford, a 22-year-old performer out of Vacaville, leads a group of six musicians who have been together for three years. They play primarily to audiences in California and Nevada and specialize in traditional country
in the style of Merle Haggard, Bob Strait, Alan Jackson and Waylon Jennings. Ford remarked that he particularly enjoys audiences that are responsive and like to dance. The season ends with Sugah Daddy, a contemporary swing-revival band delivering a mix of swing, boogie and blues music. Theyll appear in the Lincoln amphitheater on Sept. 23.

The beautiful trees are well adapted for the foothills, according to Meyerpeter. They do very well in this climate, she said. They need a little more shade and care in (the heat). Most Japanese maples prefer morning sun and afternoon shade. But there are fairly wide variations is sun tolerance. We have a two-page list of ones that are tested for the sun, Meyerpeter said. The best time to plant the trees is fall, winter and spring, although landscapers put them in all summer long, she said. When you are ready to plant, dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball, but not any deeper. You dont want the tree below ground level, she explained.
Nursery staff member Laurie Meyerpeter tends a few of the many varieties of Japanese maples at Lakes Nursery in Newcastle.

The trees dont need a lot of special care and are disease resistant. Number one water. Number two water. Number three water, she said. Young Japanese maples need regular, deep watering. The soil for the first years should have excellent drainage and it should be pretty much moist all the time not wet, but like a damp sponge. As the tree matures, it needs less water. Feeding is a good idea, too. Its nice to add amendments, Meyerpeter said. It is a high-end plant. Amendments will see the growth of your tree in the first few years. We think you should fertilize your trees at least twice a year. Trimming depends on the variety and personal taste. Some of them you can just thin out the middle,

she said. If you like the shape of the maple, you are doing the right thing. The trees rarely attract insects and even deer, although they may nibble on the leaves, prefer other things, she said. At the nursery, the cultivars range from dwarfs, which grow to about 3 feet, to full-size trees of up to 25 feet. When searching for a type of maple tree, keep in mind that if you dont find the exact variety, those in the same family will share many common characteristics. There are many differ-
ent varieties of color, sizes and leaf shape, Meyerpeter said. Colors range from classic green to shades of pink, red and purple.
Theyre very versatile for the patio and garden, growing easily in pots as well as in the ground. For Ciurej, tending the trees ands serving customers all over the state are things he particularly enjoys. I love being able to have so many of the trees nearby for myself, he said. I like the people, too. Its so exciting to have something people have been looking for ad find out it has been here all the time.

With that in mind, lets consider a simple decision model that we have found useful over the years. It has only five topics and they are all interrelated.
its probably a bill for something youve already bought or a routine bill for services received. In either case, you have to pay it so the demand question is irrelevant. If its discretionary spending, such as an expensive toy for one of the kids or a new golf club, ask yourself if this is needed or nice-to-have. Dont make a decision yet; just consider the category.
Demand
This is your first consideration. If you are spending money, is it non-discretionary or discretionary? If its non-discretionary,
Cost
Is this in your spending plan? Can you afford it? How will you pay for it? Cash or credit card? If its the latter, reexamine your demand. Do you really need this?
If you are buying a product or signing an agreement for services, can you afford the continuing costs? This ties back to the previous point. If its a product, such as an automobile or computer, are services available and at what cost? Does it have a warranty as part of the purchase price? For example, some computers come with a years warranty. Do you need an extended warranty, what services or parts does it include, and is one available for purchase? Ask yourself about your machines reliability and frequency of repair. Go

online to check the computers reliability and their customer service to help with your expectations.
Performance
When do you need or want the product and is it available within the time frame youve chosen? Using our example of the computer, do you need one now because your current machine just died? And do you need it for work? If you answered those two questions affirmatively, you likely need the computer immediately, even if you have to pay a premium. This ties back to cost.
Be critical when examining features and their importance to you. If you dont need the feature but want it nevertheless, you might consider the feature a benefit. But thats a matter of personal choice. Be honest with yourself: Is it a matter of desire or necessity?
Features, benefits
How did the manufacturer or service provider market this to you? What features did they highlight? Examine the features and determine how those features translate into benefits for you. A side-by-side comparison is useful here. List the features down a left column and the correspon-
ding benefits in the column next to it. Is an extended warranty available? Do you need it? Be careful how you answer that last question. Refer back to our service and support question. Remember, all these points are interrelated. If the benefits dont match the features, why should you care about
those features? Consider them irrelevant. Using our example, if an extended warranty is touted as a benefit - at extra cost, of course - but you dont want or need it, dont consider that as a useful feature. It does not have a corresponding benefit for you. But, be critical when examining features and their importance to you. If you dont need the feature but want it nevertheless, you might consider the feature a benefit. But thats a matter of personal choice. Be honest with yourself: Is it a matter of desire or necessity? When using this model the first few times, write it down in long hand or use a computers word processor. A simple spreadsheet can also be useful. After a while and several uses, this process or some variation will become second-nature as you analyze your spending decisions and habits. We hope so!

ith the arrival of the hot weather, one of your home systems is an immediate concern. The other will become a concern within a few months when the wet weather returns.
Air conditioning
First, lets deal with the heat and how you can stay cool. The most obvious solution is a wellfunctioning air conditioning system. Reputable contractors tell us that homeowner maintenance is simple and straight-forward. Keep the external compressor units clean and debris-free. You should be
claiming that capacitors and motors need to be replaced when second opinions have proved the diagnosis incorrect. While HVAC units do wear out and occasionally need repair, they are remarkably resilient, often lasting 15 to 25 years without major repair, according to contractor Tom Howes of The Howes Company. Be skeptical of contractors who advise major expenditures and equipment replacement. And get second opinions if you become suspicious.
Your roof
Now is also a good time to be thinking of your roof and its potential for leak-
age when our weather changes. If you came through this wet winter without leaks, congratulations. But dont rely on the past to keep dry next winter. According to building representatives with whom weve asked, roofs should be inspected every two to three years and more frequently if you live on a golf course. Golf ball strikes can crack roofing tiles and high winds can dislodge tiles. Cracked tiles should be replaced and dislodged ones have to be repositioned and refastened. But your No. 1 culprit in roof failures, according to our sources, is mud and
debris. Over time, dust and debris can collect under roof tiles. Add water and you have mud. All that should wash into the gutters; thats the way roofs are designed. But exit pathways can become clogged over time, allowing the water to collect and eventually penetrate the roofing felt under the tiles. Now, you have a leak. Homeowners should contact the roofing company who originally installed the roof or another reputable roofing contractor and arrange for an inspection. Doing so now may avoid a rush later in the year when wet weather is on the way.
