WHATS HAPPENING
n The Weidman Lions Club is sponsoring its First Golf Outing to help combat vision and hearing problems in the community. The four-person scramble will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, July 22 The Pines Golf Course, located at 1022 Clubhouse Dr., just west of Coldwater Road in the Village of Lake Isabella. The 18-hole outing includes Power Cart, continental breakfast at 8 a.m., lunch and prizes. Sign up at the Pro Shop at 1022 Clubhouse Drive or call Dennis at (989) 644-8258. n Chapel of the Lakes Lutheran Church, located at 9407 90th Ave., in Mecosta, is hosting its annual Vacation Bible School from July 2529. The time is from 9 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. daily. The theme this year is Big Jungle Adventure. Children ages 3 thru 18 years are welcome to attend. Please have child/children be ready for fun, friends, crafts, music, snacks, games and Bible stories. Register by calling the church office between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. week days at (231) 972-7891. Information is also available at www.cllconline.com. Parents may register for bus transportation when contacting the church office. n Mecosta Days registration forms are now available on FB for the Car Show and the Arts n Crafts etc; This a great opportunity for nonprofit groups to raise funds for their organization such as Scouts, youth groups, womens or mens organization, church groups etc; Mecosta Days is July 23 with festivities running from 10-4 in the Village of Mecosta (M-20) and Bromley Park. Keeping kids busy this summer

Summer is a welcome respite from the hectic days of the school year. Yet no matter how peaceful the long, lazy days of summer can be, parents and teachers know that all play and no learning can make the transition back to school extremely difficult for children. According to the National Campaign for Summer Learning, most students lose more than two months of math skills over the summer. But a break from the academic rigors of the school year doesnt have to mean a learning loss come fall. Parents can take simple steps to encourage their childs learning throughout the summer months. This can be a simple as turning classic summer activities such as learning to swim, outdoor picnics, and family trips to museums into teachable moments. Another option is to enroll children in educational summer camps. When teachers test childrens abilities after summer break, we often see the steepest decline in skills like reading and math, said Megan Riede, senior director of education programs for KinderCare Learning Centers. Fun and engaging summer activities that encourage learning not only help combat summer learning loss, but can positively affect childrens motivation, self-esteem, and confidence. A vast majority of preschool parents (69 percent) choose to send their children to day camps according to the second annual national Summer Fun survey conducted by KinderCare Learning Centers, the nations largest private provider of early childhood education. Here are some other tips parents can

(Courtesy photo) use to keep kids minds as sharp: n Turn a grocery store trip into a math lesson by having your child compare prices and tell you the best deal. n Change the classic road trip Are we there yet? question into a challenge by giving the vehicles speed and remaining trip distance, and having your child estimate your arrival time. n Enroll your child in a program that balances interesting and educational content with group play. For example, KinderCare Learning Centers created 12 uniquely themed camps like Scienteriffic and Wilderness 101 that offer a balanced approach to learning and fun. n Make meal and snack preparation a chance to practice reading (recipes) and working with fractions (have older children double or halve a recipe). n Develop a summer reading plan with your child. Make weekly trips to the library and help your child create a list of books to read based on their interests.
