ENG
he final countdown to the IAAF World Championships, Daegu 2011 is well underway and we keenly anticipate the start of nine days of competition on the 27 August. The IAAF World Championships ranks second only to the FIFA World Cup as a single sport event which can bring together 2000 athletes from 212 countries and territories, and this year there is no bigger championships in the world of sport than Daegu 2011.

I was particularly delighted that last September the President of the Republic of Korea, Mr. Lee Myung-bak, visited Daegu Stadium and promised the government's full support for the successful hosting of the Championships. I fully concur with President Lee remarks that s Daegu 2011 will be a perfect opportunity to enhance the international standing of Korea and Daegu Metropolitan City will be a festival that every Korean it can participate in and enjoy to their fullest contentment. Significantly, Daegu 2011 will be the first IAAF World Championships to feature a new competition timetable, with its compact and exciting format guaranteed to attract new legions of athletics fans. Coupled with a varied and attractive ticketing strategy which offers substantial discounts for early purchase, and a novel eBay ticket auction for an exclusive trip to Daegu which will commence from USD 9.58, in celebration of Usain Bolt 100m World record, I hope Koreans will s come and support the world best athletes. s

Since the last bulletin so much has been achieved, so many significant stepping stones have been successfully negotiated, the timetable has been approved, mascot, posters and medals unveiled, and most recently a new Mondo track at Daegu stadium has been inaugurated. The Local Organising Committee slogan of s Sprint Together for Tomorrow sums up the joint effort which will be required between the national government, Daegu Metropolitan City, the Local Organising Committee and of course the IAAF and the athletics family worldwide, if we are to make the 13th edition of the IAAF World Championships into the success for which we all strive.

World Championships in Daegu this August and September. The Championships is an ideal means of contributing to the peace and prosperity of mankind.

The dynamism and spirit I can see from the slogans ofSprint Together for Tomorrow Dream, Challenge and Passion and are similar to the ideals of the Republic of Korea. Throughout its 5,000year history, Korea has actively participated in the international community efforts to promote global peace and prosperity, while s at the same time cultivating a highly advanced culture. During the last global financial crisis, Korea recovered the fastest and is now one of the world emerging powers. Last s November, Korea successfully hosted the G20 Summit in Seoul; the first non-G8 nation to host such a prestigious summit. This showcased Korea prestige as a top-tier nation and, in the s process, helped lay the foundation for a sustained recovery and stable growth of the global economy. Furthermore, Korea has been recognised as a sporting powerhouse, especially in terms of staging major international events. These high profile events include the 1988 Summer

Olympic Games, the 2002 FIFA World Cup, and the 2003 Summer Universiade. With the hosting of the IAAF World Championships Daegu 2011, Korea will earn the distinction of having hosted the triple crown of the three most prestigious sporting events - the Olympic Games, the FIFA World Cup and the IAAF World Championships. As the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, I will ensure that we will tap into our vast experiences and do our best to stage the most memorable IAAF World Championships. We will extend our warm hospitality to all athletes, officials, media and visitors. s We hope that you will experience the beauty of Korea wonderful nature, excellent cuisine, as well as centuries-old tradition and culture. Host Venue and Warm-up Venues

Daegu Stadium is a time-tested facility as it was also the venue for many international sporting events over the years. For the Championships, the LOC refurbished the lighting system, giant electronic scoreboards and the sound system of the stadium. The video screens were replaced with supersized, state-of-the-art screens. The main scoreboard (24.24 x 9.6m) and the secondary scoreboard (17.04 x 9.6m) are about 1.5 times larger, with more enhanced features and quality than the previous models. In terms of lighting, the LOC improved the illumination intensity by installing more lighting fixtures and replacing old ones. In addition, the clarity of the sound system has improved with the replacement of the audio mixers and amplifiers, as well as the upgrading of the speakers.

This design is similar to the Yin-Yang symbol of the orient, and it represents the synergy between East and West. The back of the medal shows the image of the Daegu stadium, as well as the Local Organising Committee slogan of Sprint Together for Tomorrow .
