Scrybe 1.6 features

Scrybe 1.6 introduces a new gesture recognition engine that can improve gesture hit rates from 60% to near 100%. This accomplished with a combination of better tracking mechanisms, more intelligent algorithms, and the introduction of variants and synonyms to allow Scrybe to recognize a symbol even when it isnt drawn perfectly. To increase the performance of the Scrybe software and to improve its gesture recognition, we have had to eliminate some of the symbols that were available in Scrybe 1.5 and below. The symbols we eliminated are those that are very similar to another existing symbol. By removing the duplicate, we allow users to draw a less-than-perfect symbol and still achieve their desired gesture. For more information on the upgrade path for existing users with custom gestures, see the "But can I keep my old gestures? section below. Installation
Although everyone would love to use Scrybe, there are currently a few limitations. In order to install and run Scrybe, you must: Have a laptop or notebook computer with a built-in TouchPad. This TouchPad must be a Synaptics TouchPad. Not sure what you have? Check your computers Control Panel. Have a Synaptics TouchPad manufactured in 2004 or later. Because of hardware and firmware advances that have occurred over the past 6 years, Scrybe may not be supported on TouchPads produced prior to 2004. Use a supported browser such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Google Chrome. Scrybe does not currently support the Safari or Opera web browsers.

During installation, you may get one of the following warning messages, depending upon your operating system:

You can safely install the software. Click on the Continue Anyway option. The software is safe, it has just not yet completed the Microsoft Windows Logo testing procedure. For upgrade installations on Vista machines, there is an additional Repair/Restore procedure that automatically takes place the first time you start Scrybe 1.5; this operation only needs to be run once.

How do I install Scrybe?

Whether you are new to Scrybe or updating from Scrybe 1.0 or Scrybe 1.5, the process is easy: download the new version of Scrybe from the Scrybe website, http://www.uscrybe.com/download.php, or from the Synaptics driver website, http://www.synaptics.com/support/drivers. Scrybe includes an integrated installation wizard to guide you through the installation process. Administrative privileges are required for the installation. The Scrybe installation contains a Driver Detective that inspects your machine and selects the correct driver version to install. Then, once the correct driver for your machine is installed, Scrybe is installed. Once the installation is complete, you must re-start your system to use Scrybe. Scrybes language support is seamless and automatic. The installation program locates the operating systems default language, and uses that default to select which language version of Scrybe should be installed. Scrybe supports the following languages: Arabic, Czech, Danish, German, Greek, European Spanish, Mexican Spanish, Finnish, French, Canadian French, Hebrew, Croatian, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Brazilian Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Slovak, Slovenian, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Simplified Chinese, Hong Kong Chinese, and Traditional Chinese.

But can I keep my old gestures?

When upgrading to Scrybe 1.6, the upgrade process preserves the custom gestures you created with Scrybe 1.0 or Scrybe 1.5. There are some exceptions, and these are described below. Please follow the instructions in this section carefully, to understand which gestures and/or symbols cannot be preserved and how to re-assign a symbol to a gesture whose symbol is no longer in use. For Scrybe 1.5 users: One of the common complaints of existing users of Scrybe was that the gesture recognition rates could have been better. So, the Scrybe Team developed a new gesture recognition engine that dramatically improves gesture recognition rates. Part of the changes involve allowing greater flexibility in how a symbol is drawn on the pad and to allow this flexibility, we had to streamline our list of available symbols. On the following page is a list of symbols that we had to retire from Scrybe because they are too much like another symbol. For example, we had to remove the 6 symbol because it was too close in shape to the G symbol, and the G symbol was in common use. If you have used one of these symbols in one of your custom gestures, you will have to replace that symbol.

Follow these steps: 1. Install Scrybe 1.6 on your machine. 2. Re-start your computer and launch the Scrybe application. Approximately 3-4 minutes after start-up, the following window displays:

3. For each gesture highlighted in red: a. Select the gesture and click the wrench button to edit the gesture. b. Select a new symbol for the gesture from the pull-down list. c. Save your change. Once you replace the symbol in use, the gesture will function exactly as in previous versions of Scrybe. Also, two symbols have been changed. In previous versions of Scrybe, the lowercase q symbol ended on the downstroke, and the fish symbol was just one elongated loop. In Scrybe 1.6, these symbols have an upward tail to differentiate them from other symbols. Compare the old symbols and the new symbols in the table below:

You do not need to change these symbols, if you are already using them; you just need to be sure and draw the symbol in the new manner. Note: As indicated by the arrow position, the fish gesture now begins on the downstroke, to trace the lower line first. In previous versions of Scrybe, the fish began on an upstroke.

For Scrybe 1.0 users: If you are moving from Scrybe version 1.0 to Scrybe 1.6, we want to maintain as much of your existing Scrybe customizations as possible. Although your Preferences settings will be lost when you upgrade, most if not all of your custom gestures will be preserved and loaded into the new Scrybe version. Unfortunately, there may be configuration conflicts that occur when the new version of Scrybe is installed. For example, if you had customized a Scrybe gesture for the b symbol, your custom gesture will be replaced with the new b (Bing) gesture. If you used any of the following gestures, your custom gesture definition will be replaced with the definition below:

The symbols 1 (numeral one) and 0 (numeral zero) were available in Scrybe 1.0, but were retired from Scrybe 1.5 because they were too much like other symbols. If you used one of these symbols in one of your custom gestures, you must reassign these gestures to a new symbol to preserve their functionality: Removed Symbol Symbol Name

What if I want to go back to my old driver version?

If, for some reason, you need to revert to your old driver version, you will need to uninstall Scrybe and its associated driver, and then restore your old version. If you need to back up to a previous driver version, Scrybe uses Windows Restore Points to make rollbacks possible. Contact our Support Team for more information; contact links are located at www.uscrybe.com/help. Note: you must have a Synaptics TouchPad driver installed on your computer in order to use Scrybe! Scrybe is wholly dependent upon the TouchPad driver; if your Synaptics TouchPad driver software has been stopped via the Task Manager, or has been removed through the Add/Remove Programs utility, or in any other way put into a state where the driver is not working, then Scrybe will no longer function. Scrybe 1.6 requires a driver version of 15.1.22 or higher; driver versions previous to this do not fully support Scrybe functionality. For example, the three-finger tap may not bring up the overlay, or profiles may not load correctly.

What if I need to repair Scrybe?

If some of your files get corrupted and you need to repair Scrybe, you must uninstall and reinstall Scrybe (using the uninstall feature and then re-downloading Scrybe from the download website) or use the Windows restore application feature to recover the system and Scrybe from a previous point when the software was operational. If you attempt to start Scrybe when the files are corrupted, Windows will attempt an automatic repair, and the Windows Installer will return an error.

Corrected issues
This section describes previously-documented performance issues that are resolved as of this release.

Gesture recognition
The new gesture recognition engine has fixed several previously occurring symbol identification issues. For example, these two issues, previously documented in Scrybe release notes, have been resolved: Previously, one symbol listed as an option for use in user-defined gestures was not working. This symbol is now operational: Two of the available symbols for custom gestures, the short i and the short t were very much alike; these two symbols can be confused for one another by Scrybe, so we recommend that these symbols not be used unless absolutely necessary.

In addition, Scrybe has resolved other issues that involved confusion between symbols and symbol drawing methods; for example, in previous versions of Scrybe, the Show Desktop symbol was sometimes confused for the Facebook symbol.

Dialog box option, popup not responding

Scrybe has a warning dialog that appears if you attempt to exit Scrybe in the middle of creating a gesture: you will lose your modifications if you exit Scrybe at this point. If users continued to create a gesture with this warning dialog open, Scrybe might eventually hang when users selected No as the warning dialog option. This issue has been resolved. If a user locked the computer while the Select a Symbol popup was open for the Practice Screen, Scrybe might hang if the user clicked the Practice button when logging back in to the computer. This issue has been resolved. When a user enters a website address in the New Gesture form, Scrybe will now validate the address. Scrybe returns an error message if the website address is left blank. In previous versions of Scrybe, the End Task button did not always close windows properly; this issue has been resolved.

Language support
Scrybe did not always display properly if users attempted to open it in a language other than the default language specified for the computer or in a language not supported by Scrybe. In this case, some buttons and windows might be blank. Now, Scrybe defaults to an English display in these circumstances.

Program support
In previous versions of Scrybe, if any of the programs associated with default gestures were renamed or removed, the user would get a Scrybe is executing message when the default gesture was used, but no program would load. This issue has been resolved.

Performance issues
This section covers performance-related issues that have been observed in this version of Scrybe. When upgrading to Scrybe 1.6, if a user has custom gestures that use one of the retired symbols, the Please Note message described on Page 5 will appear. If the user ignores this message or closes it, and continues to open and use other Scrybe windows, Scrybe may behave unstably. For example, if a user activates the Practice overlay before the message appears, and then locks the computer after the message appears, Scrybe will fail to relaunch when the user unlocks the computer and closes the Please Note dialog. [2782, 2787] If the Scrybe Practice window and Info window are left open, and the computer goes into Lock, Hibernate, Sleep, or Screen Saver modes, Scrybe may not start correctly once the machine is returned to operational mode. [2695] When creating a new gesture, Scrybe does not always display a warning message if the user leaves a required field blank. For example, if a user fills in all fields of the New Gesture window except for the Name: field and then clicks OK, Scrybe may not display a warning message about the required gesture name. [2705] Instead of opening the Inbox for the Outlook email application, the Scrybe @ gesture currently opens an empty New Message form. [2686]

If a user selects the Edit option for the Finance gesture, an extra http// will be added to the URL path in the gesture definition, regardless of the action taken (even just clicking OK). [2784] If a user unchecks the Tap to Click option in the Synaptics Pointing Device popup menu, a three-finger tap will no longer open the Scrybe overlay. The Tap to Click option must be selected for the TouchPad to recognize Scrybe actions. [2696] Each gesture in Scrybe has a sound associated with it. Currently, the Cut gesture sound is not operational by default. The Cut gesture sound will work for other gestures, and another sound can be successfully applied to the Cut Gesture. If a user edits the sound for the Cut gesture, Scrybe will accept the sound selected by the user, and sound for the Cut gesture will be operational. [2648] When upgrading from Scrybe 1.0 to Scrybe 1.6, a users custom gestures are preserved. If the user edits these pre-existing gestures, the "Select a sound to confirm this gesture" option will be disabled. Only the default sounds are supported for gestures created with Scrybe 1.0. [2788] If ALT + F4 is used to close the Scrybe Settings window, the window will close successfully, but the Scrybe icon in the system tray will also be removed. [2559] On Windows 7 systems with an Nvidia graphics driver, Scrybe may not load properly. The work-around is to navigate to C:\Program Files\Synaptics\SynTP\ and remove all *.wmv and *.html files. [1299] If Scrybe is installed on a system with the TouchPad SGS profile feature enabled, and then Scrybe is uninstalled, the driver profile feature may also be uninstalled. If this occurs, please call the Customer Support team to learn the necessary steps to re-activate. [2594, 2595] On some systems, the Scrybe Settings window may come up after the computer returns from hibernation or sleep mode. The window can be safely closed. [2734] When a warning dialog box is displayed in Scrybe, do not attempt to use the ESC button to close out the dialog box; this will cause the dialog box to lock up and not respond. Select one of the buttons on the bottom of the dialog box to close it. [2464] When creating a new Shortcut gesture, be sure not to type over the pre-defined shortcut names. If pre-defined names are overwritten, Scrybe will not create the new shortcut. [2294] When editing a gesture, the Launch pull-down list contains all of the options for applications that the gesture could possibly launch. If the two-finger scroll method is used to scroll through the Launch list, more than one Choose an application for this Gesture dialog box may appear. [2469] For gestures from the Entertainment gesture group, the Specify a program option is not working properly. If an application to launch is chosen during this browse operation, the gesture will no longer work. [2409] On machines with an Intel i3/i5/i7 motherboard with the dynamic/smart power feature, Scrybe prevents Windows from switching into dynamic power switching mode. [2193] Sometimes, using the Scrybe Quit command will cause the desktop icons to disappear. When this happens, the user must log out and log back in again to restore the icons. [1120]

Multi-user issues
Issues have been found when two or more Scrybe users have unique user accounts on the same computer. If a computer has two users, User A and User B, and User A removes Scrybe, then the TouchPad driver profile menu accessible from the system tray will be for User A regardless of which user is currently logged in. [2592] When switching between TouchPad user profiles on the same machine, be sure to have Scrybe running (the Scrybe icon visible in the system tray). Otherwise, the user-defined gestures for the newly-loaded profile may not appear. [2468]

Localization issues
Some issues have been found with localized Scrybe text strings: In Scrybe versions other than English, the gesture names in the Scrybe Settings pane and gesture list are not localized; the gesture names are in English. The list headings will also remain in English, regardless of the language used. When a user adds new gestures, the names in the gesture list will then be in English (Scrybe default gestures) and the users selected language (user-created gestures). Also, the screen captures in Scrybe Help are English-only for all languages. Once a gesture has been created, it will remain listed in the language used during its creation, even if the user later changes languages (for example, by using the Windows Control Panel Regional and Language Options menu). Scrybe may not display properly if your default language is Chinese and you attempt to open Scrybe in Japanese, or if Japanese is your default and you attempt to open Scrybe in Chinese. [2338] The Scrybe Please Note window that describes the upgrade issues for Scrybe symbols (shown on page 5 in these Release Notes) is not localized. The contents of this window will be in English for all Scrybe 1.6 versions. [2768]
