Background A language is a city to the building of which every human being brought a stone (Emerson via Fromklin, Blair, and Collins, 2008: 396) because everyone uses language in their communication. A language is usually used in delivering the social meaning to the other people. In this case the social meaning will be different between each person. For example, a butcher will talk about the quality of meat to the costumers. Nowadays, learning a foreign language is needed to answer the obstacle of globalization era. In this term, English is important to be mastered as the international language. In this circumstance, elementary schools, junior high schools, senior high schools, and even university levels are engaging English in their main curriculum. It shows that English is a must for students to be mastered. Learning English is not as easy as we think. There are many problems appear, such as, the students background, English as a foreign language, and roles in English. Those problems will be the obstacles in learning English and teaching English also. Teaching English as a foreign language is very difficult, because, a teacher is demanded to be creative in delivering the materials. Teaching English is not merely giving the materials but also making the materials understandable for students. It is not how creative a teacher in making a media but also how good a teacher in managing students and involving student in class activity. Those issues are important to be known for a teacher. But the problem is, the teacher sometimes doesnt realize to the problems. It seems that, a teacher mostly uses a conventional method in teaching English. It seems like teachers centered class, not students centered class. In this case, making students become active learners are needed to success the teaching and learning process. So, students will

find out the materials by themselves, and the teacher will suggest the students to their mistakes. Teachers centered class is also happened in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. The teacher usually uses texts to be translated by students and next students will be given so many exercises. It is not a good class condition from students point of view. Considering to the monotony activity, students will be bored. In teaching and learning process is needed to have an interesting class, because, it will make a good impression from students to the study. So, Quantum Learning is hoped as the win-win solution and solving problems in replacing the conventional method which is used by the English teacher in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. B. Identification of the Problem Considering to background above, the researcher identifies the problem in the term of teaching English process in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. The conventional method which is used by the English teacher in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta is making students bored and not active in learning process. So, this research will focus in the effectiveness of Quantum Learning in teaching English compared with the method which is used by the English teacher. In matter of hypothesis, the conventional method used by the English teacher cannot manage the class and accommodate the willingness of students well. Whereas, the researcher believes that the Quantum Learning will be able to manage and accommodate better than the conventional method. Thats why the researcher wants to use this method in doing the experiment. C. Limitation of the problem Considering to the identification above, the researcher limits the problem to the effectiveness of Quantum Learning compared with conventional method of

the English teacher in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. So in this research, the researcher uses the experimental research to find out the effectiveness of using Quantum Learning compared to the conventional research of the English teacher in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. D. Formulation of the problem Based on the limitation above, the researcher would like to formulate the research through a. What method is usually used by the teacher? b. How far is Quantum Learning appropriate to use in the class one of SMKN $ Yogyakarta? E. Objectives of the study Based on the formulation of the problem above, the objective of the study are: a. To find out the differences between the conventional method and Quantum Learning. b. To explain the effectiveness of Quantum Learning compared with the conventional method. F. Significance of the study The significance of the study will be concerned to: a. The researcher: it will be very useful to researcher to enrich the knowledge about Quantum Learning and its effectiveness in teaching English. b. The teacher: it will be very useful to the teacher to enrich the method in teaching English in the classroom. So, students can absorb well the materials given by the teacher. c. The reader: it will enrich the information of the reader to Quantum Learning and its effectiveness in teaching English.

G. Theoritical Framework 1. Learning The word learning has many definitions. According to Webster Dictionary of English (1968:1286) learning is defined as a process of acquisition and extinction of modifications in existing knowledge, skills, habit, or action tendencies in a motivated organism through experience, practice, and exercises. The statement above implies that learning refers not only to a process of acquisition but also to the extinction of modifications. Another definition of learning is acquiring or getting of knowledge of a subject or skill by study experience, or instruction (Brown: 2001, 7). It means that the process of learning needs combination between how we get the knowledge and how we make the experience as knowledge also. 2. Quantum Learning a. Definition Bobbi De Porter and Mike Hernacki (2005: 16) stated that: Kami mendefinisikan Quantum Learning sebagai interaksi-interaksi yang mengubah energy menjadi cahaya. So, from the definition above, the researcher concludes that, Quantum learning is a way to give a comfortable learning activity to the student. Quantum learning provides an interesting activity to the students in acquiring the foreign language. It is hoped that the students can absorb the materials easily compared with the conventional method using texts and questions. Quantum Learning gives much contribution in the development of learners psychological aspect, such as, giving motivation to the student, making an interesting class by giving music, posters, etc. Quantum Learning also demands the teacher to be an advisor for the students mistakes. In this term, students will find out the materials by themselves. So, that is why Quantum Learning is hoped as a light for students in understanding the materials

Porter and Hernacki (2005: 15) also added about the Quantum Learning: Quantum Learning adalah seperangkat metode dan falsafah belajar yang terbukti efektif untuk semua umur. Quantum Learning is a method to solve the English learning difficulties of the students. In the status quo now, the method in teaching English always try to force students to figure out the meaning of a text and answer the question related to the text. This conventional method is done in the daily English learning process. Students feel bored to this old method and the teacher also cannot be creative in solving this problem. And the ironic is the teacher sometimes do not realize to this problem. So, Quantum Learning is to solve the problem and to enrich the information to the teacher about method in teaching English. b. Principles In Quantum Learning, there are many principles, like the quotation below: Quantum learning menggabungkan sugestologi, teknik pemercepatan belajar, dan NLP dengan teori, keyakinan, dan metode kami sendiri. Termasuk diantaranya konsep-konsep kunci dari berbagai teori dan strategi belajar yang lain, seperti: y y y y y y y y Teori otak kanan/kiri Teori otak triune (3 in 1) Pilihan modalitas (visual, auditorial, dan kinestetik) Teori kecerdasan ganda Pendidikan holistic (menyeluruh) Belajar berdasarkan pengalaman Belajar dengan symbol (methaporic learning) Simulasi/permainan (Porter and Hernacki, 200: 16).

Those concepts are supposed to help the teacher to teach English in the class room. Quantum Learning is related to the accelerated learning in teaching English. Quantum Learning tries to offer a fast learning of

English in a simple way. First of all, the teacher should realize to the eight principles in learning English for accelerated learning. The teacher should know the characteristic of the student, the psychological aspect of the student, the materials, and the condition of the class, to make this accelerated learning become success. Quantum Learning seems like suggestopedia. In its principle, Quantum Learning tries to give a positive suggestion to the learner. A positive suggestion can make a different result compared to the conventional method. Quantum Learning influences the psychological aspect of the student. So that is why the student will feel comfort to the class, the teacher, and the learning situation. It is hoped that, the student can absorb well the materials. 3. Teaching Teaching may define as showing or helping someone to learn someone to learn how to do something, giving instruction, guiding I the study of something, providing with knowledge, causing to know or understand (Brown, 2001: 7). Considering to the definition above, the researcher can also conclude that, teaching is not only adding the knowledge of learners, but also educate learners morally. That is why teaching plays an important role in transforming the learners. Teaching in the class room should be dynamic considering the situation of the student. So, the emotional relationship will be built from the teacher to the student. This good situation should be kept in making a good impression from the student to the teacher. This is how the teacher can play the role as a good facilitator to the student. 4. Teaching English Teaching English is related to teach the four skills of English. They are, writing, speaking, listening and reading. The success of teaching English is also related to the English learning process in the classroom. It is not only how the teacher gives the materials and knowledge to the students but also how the interaction between students and teacher happen in the classroom. So,

based on that, it can be concluded that the English learning process is related to the three elements, which are: a. The roles of teacher Role is the function or position that somebody has or is expected to have in an organization in society or in a relationship (Hornby, 2000: 1109). Then, the role of teacher is the function or position of a teacher in the classroom. Basically, teacher has so many roles inside of the class because the learning process is depend on the teacher itself, the roles are like as the instructor, neutral chair, consultant, commentator, and absent friend. b. The learners of English Learner is someone (especially a child) who learns (as from a teacher) or takes up knowledge or beliefs

(http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Learners). Then, learners also can be called as students in the classroom. Learners itself can be divided into several kinds, based on the age and level of their knowledge. Based on the age, learners can be divided into three (Harmer, 2007: 14-16), which are: children, adolescents, and adults. Then, based on the level of knowledge learners also divided into three (Harmer, 2007: 16-18), which are: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. c. The learning process Learning is acquiring new knowledge, behaviors, skills, values, preferences or understanding, and may involve synthesizing different types of information (http://www,answers.com/topic/learning). Then, the English learning process is the process of acquiring knowledge about English. The process of learning process is very important because it is related to the goals that want to be achieved by the students.

H. Research Method 1. Experimental research Experimental research is carefully constructed so that variables can be controlled and manipulated (Seliger and Shohamy, 2008: 135). This experimental research will focus in comparing the controlled class and the experimental class of which both of them will be treated in different. Class A will be treated in the conventional methods, and class B will be treated in Quantum Learning. 2. Data, Research Object and Data Source The data will be the ineffectiveness of the conventional method used by the teacher in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. The data will be very useful in implementing Quantum Learning as the new method in solving the problem of the students learning process. The research object will be the student of SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. This research is to answer the students learning problem in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. The conventional method such translating the text implemented in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta makes the student bored. And this research is to break the ice in the learning process of SMKN 4 Yogyakarta. 3. Techniques for Collecting Data Techniques in collecting data are focused in observing the ineffectiveness of the conventional method. Techniques for collecting data will be done by interviewing the student. The objective of this technique is to find out the objectivity of data and to figure out the problem. 4. Techniques for Analyzing Data The t-test is used to compare the means of two groups. It helps determine how confident the researcher can be that the differences found between two groups (experimental and control) as a result of a treatment are not due to chance (Seliger and Sholamy, 2008: 231). This technique for analyzing data is used to observe two treatments. They are experimental class and controlled class. This technique is to find out the difference result of learning between

experimental class and controlled class. The researcher will implement Quantum Learning in experimental class and the conventional method in controlled class. And finally the researcher can find out the effectiveness of Quantum Learning compared with the conventional method.

Abstract Teaching English by using conventional method is not easy. The teacher should face the boredom of students. The English teachers in SMKN 4 Yogyakarta are also facing this problem. They cannot be creative in delivering the materials. They order the students to read, to translate, and to answer the questions. They teach English in the form of grammatical correction. The students cannot accept the materials well, because they are too tired to listen the teacher speech. So, \in this research, the researcher will use Quantum Learning to be compared to the conventional method, of which Quantum Learning is to solve teaching conventional method. This research uses experimental research. Experimental research is to

compare the controlled class and the experimental research.
