Duringthefourthstage,weareabletodrawthemindin,a pratyahara,butwecangotoofarinwithdrawingitfrom theouterworldwhichmakesitfer.legroundforsubtle dullness.Atlevel5,wehavetocrankupthewatchermind soastoavoidsubtledullness.Weputthespycamerain thebackofourheads:weuplizthemindbythinkingof somethinghappy,e.g.thinkingofhowwonderfulitwillbe whenwebecomegoodmeditators.Oneofthewaysof rememberingtheninelevelsistodis.nguishthislevelfrom thepreviouslevel.Thedierencebetween4and5isthat herewedontgetobviousformsofdullnessand restlessness.

Level8:Onepointedness
Atlevel8atthestartofthesession,someeortisappliedtoshut downanyformofdullnessorrestlessnessandthenfortherestof thesession,theydontreturnandtheen.resessionrunssmoothly. Uptothispoint,therearechangesinthestrengthoftheenemy,i.e. intherstfewlevels,theenemyisstrong;inthemiddletheenemy hasbecomeweakenedorcompromisedorneutralized;attheend theenemyissurrenderingwithlihlepowertocauseharm.The powersofdullnessandrestlessnesshavebeenlostandcanno longeraectustheyhavebecomeimpotentandcanthurtus. Fromtheeighthlevelonward,watchfulnessisnolongernecessary becausethereisnochanceforanydullnessorrestlessnesstocome. Thisiswherelexnggocomesintoitsown.Wearenowintheow ofmedita.onandthereisnolongeranypossibilityofany interrup.ons.The7thand8thlevelsareachievedthroughsome amountofeortwhichiswhatdis.nguishesthe9thlevel.
