District Governor Celeste Ricupero Building A New Foundation

Fellow Lions: I hope that the Lions that attended the District Cabinet Meeting on March 7th at the Wolfeboro Inn enjoyed it as much as I did. The attendance was at 103 and the weather was perfect for the ride. On Saturday May 1st the New Hampshire Leadership Forum will be take place in Concord at the Fire Department Academy. All Lions are encouraged to attend. PDG Stan has put together interesting classes for all. Spring Convention is May 7-8-9 at the Ashworth in Hampton Beach, NH. Secretaries Please get the PU101s in to Lions International Before May 15th. This report is very important. Also send a copy to DG Celeste, VDG Bill, CST Marilyn, and Fred Plett.

Happy Easter to you and yours DG Celeste dgceleste@hotmail.com Volunteers are not paid Not because they are worthless. But because they are priceless

Attention all Club Presidents and Secretaries

Our Spring Convention is coming fast as is the Memorial Service for our fellow Deceased Lions. It is very important that I have the names and a short Biography on any Lion that has passed in your club between April 2009 and Present. If they were not honored at our last convention we should honor them this year. Please get the info to me ASAP!!! dgceleste@hotmail.com

Region and Zone Chair Listing

Fellow Lions in District 44-H:

DG Celeste and VDG Bill along with MERL Chair PCC Mike Baillargeon have worked very hard this year to get our District back on track. As your Area Coordinator for the Global Membership Team I am tired of hearing from other Constitutional Areas about how they are growing and North America is dying. If the trend continues in a few short years they will make their move again to place LCI Headquarters overseas -we don't want that -- we can't let it happen. As your GMT Leader I've started a campaign in my Districts in New England, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia ---

In these final months of this Lions year -- let's show DG Celeste, VDG Bill and PCC Mike how much we appreciate their tireless efforts and gets ONE new member between now and June! If each of YOU get ONE our District will have a PLUS in Membership come June 30th! PLEASE ASK YOUR SPOUSE -- YOUR KIDS -- YOUR CO-WORKERS to JOIN NOW! What better gift to give DG Celeste for her homecoming! The same holds true for DG Don, VDG Lucille and MERL Chair Forrest!

NOTES FROM VDG BILL BROWN

Again our membership team has been busy. Four teams canvassed Dover on February 20th. Membership Chair PCC Mike has held a couple of meetings in Dover that were a little disappointing due to the small turn out of potential Dover Lions. PCC Mike said he is not giving up and will continue working to get members for the Dover area. I would be remiss if I did not recognize Region II Chair Karen Baillargeon for her work with letters and calls. In the meantime seven members were inducted in the Portsmouth Lions as a result of the MERL teams membership drive on January 16th. At a Zone 3A meeting in Loudon on March 16th I had the pleasure of inducting our newest Loudon Lion Barbara Cannon. Congratulations Barbara and welcome. I also was able to provide a talk on membership for the approximately 25 people in attendance. There are still three months left in this Lions year and our membership team is available for speaking at your club/zone meetings. Cabinet meetings in 44H and 44N are history and it is now on to both District Governors Homecomings and Spring Conventions. Until next month I am: Yours in Lionism, VDG Bill Brown Wrbrown_99@yahoo

NOTES FROM MCC FORREST POWERS

As we spring into the month of April, there are many things still on our plate need to be taken care of. It seems as though the year no sooner began and we are already electing next years officers. Welcome to the new Franklin Area Lions Club. Charter night will be on June 12, 2010. I certainly hope as many Lions that can, will attend their celebration. Look for more detailed information elsewhere in your newsletter . Congratulations to Carrie Hinkle of the Hudson Lions for her submission to the photo contest. It has been forwarded on to Lions International for judging. Those that are attending the International Convention in Sydney, Australia should make an effort to view the photos and vote. As a leader of your club, membership starts with you. Move to grow in numbers, in visibility, and in service. Dont forget the FUN we have in doing what we do. We serve. Moving to grow with you, Forrest Powers, MCC

NEW HAMPSHIRE STATE BIRD

The purple finch became the official New Hampshire state bird in 1957. Rep. Robert Manahan sponsored the bill against opposition by Rep. Doris Spollett for the New Hampshire hen. With the support of the NH Audubon Society, the NH Federation of Garden Clubs and the State Federation of Womens Clubs, the bill quickly passed and was signed into law by Gov. Lane Dwinell on April 25. Adult finches have a short forked brown tail and brown wings. They are about four inches in length and weigh approximately 1.2 ounces. The males are raspberry red on the head, breast, back and rump, while females have light brown upperparts and white under parts with brown streaks throughout. Males backs are streaked and females have a white line on the face above the eye. Though the purple finch population has declined sharply in the East, it is still considered of least concern in the conservation status. They forage in trees and bushes and sometimes on the ground. They mainly eat seed, berries and insects. Purple finches are fond of sunflower seed, millet and thistle.

Stay healthy and

Go Green! Lion Toni Olden

LIONS CAMP PRIDE

We are currently planning our 2010 summer. The groups from last year are coming back again this year. Our last year staff will be returning. The camp is looking for a maintenance man to work at the camp this summer. If anyone is interested or knows anyone in the New Durham area please forward his or her name to me. We are looking to have a successful summer again this year. The BOD have formed new committees to work on New Groups, Maintenance, Fundraising and Long Range planning, along with a few other committees. If any Lions would like to help, Please contact me at 329-5603. As Promised, Camp Pride Financial Accounts were audited by the district with a report presented at the March 44 H cabinet meeting in Wolfeboro, stating all accounts are in order with no issues to report. A year-end financial report was also presented the cabinet meeting, copies are being sent to club president that were not present at the meeting. After all receipts for the year (camper fees, fundraising & donations) and expenses (campers and major repairs/improvements) the camp funds were down less the $2,000 for the year. This is explained in detail the year-end report. Again, the BOD and I must thank each individual and clubs that supports Camp Pride President Sam Longbook www.camppride.nhlions.org

Diabetes Awareness
How much exercise do the experts say I need?
The Dietary Guidelines for Americans suggest how much activity Americans should do. Keep in mind they are goals, not the place to start. People with pre-diabetes, diabetes, or the general adult public should aim for a minimum of 30 minutes most days. Walking, gardening, doing yard work, swimming, or cleaning house will all work to meet this goal. Anything that increases your heart rate and causes you to break a light sweat. Children and teens should aim for at least 60 minutes most days.

In addition, the Diabetes Prevention Programa large study done in people with pre-diabetesshowed that 150 minutes of physical activity a week (30 minutes, five times a week) helped prevent or delay type 2 diabetes. In this study, people also lost 10 to 20 pounds by making changes in their eating habits. Do these guidelines seem hard to fit in to your busy life? Its not easy to find the time. You wont go from zero to thirty or sixty (minutes), in a day or week. Take one step at a time. Slowly build up to your goal
