GROUP B ( Short Answer Type Questions ) Answer any three of the following. 2. 3. 4. 5. Name the desirable characteristics of a good refrigerant. Explain the different methods of compounding of the steam turbine stages. Derive the expression for LMTD for counter flow heat exchanger. Show that the discharge through the nozzle is maximum when there is a sonic condition at the throat. 6. What is the effect of superheating on a simple vapour compression refrigeration cycle ? Explain with the help of a diagram. 3 5 = 15
A 10 tonne vapour compression refrigeration plant, working with R-12, operates with condensing and evaporating temperature of 35C and 10C respectively. A suction line heat exchanger is used to subcool the saturated liquid leaving the condenser. Saturated vapour leaving evaporator is superheated in the same heat exchanger to the extent that a discharge temperature of 60C is obtained after isentropic compression. Using the given property table for R-12, find the followings : i) ii) iii) iv) Degree of subcoding and superheating COP Mass flow rate of refrigerant Power required

A 16 cm outer diameter and 4 mm thick pipe, carrying steam of temperature 550C, is made up of the material of co-efficient of conductivity of 45 W/mK. The steam film heat transfer coefficient is 1165 W/m2 K and air film heat transfer coefficient is 12 W/m2 K at 25C. The pipe is covered with insulating material of 4 cm thick of conductivity 0.095 W/mK. But a considerable heat leakage is observed with this arrangement. A 5 cm thick layer of magnesia insulation of co-efficient of conductivity of 0.065 W/mK is therefore proposed to add without changing other conditions. Find the thermal resistances of every layer. Also find total resistance, universal coefficient of heat transfer, rate of heat leakage for each of the arrangements.
