Does a Paull 'cloud' hang over renewables investment?

Every cloud has a silver lining goes the old saying, but when that 'cloud' might hang over your village, then the saying takes on a whole new meaning!
Paull may be directly affected by plans to establish a new Humberside Enterprise Zone. A 'Renewable Energy Super Cluster' on the North and South banks of the Humber may include proposals to develop a piece of land just to the north of the village of Paull. A development brief published in the Hull Daily Mail shows that a '49-hectare site at Paull east of Saltend' may be one of ten sites earmarked to be transformed into a cluster of renewable industries.

One of the sites, Alexandra Dock, Hull would be developed by Siemens to build its 80m wind turbine factory providing thousands of construction jobs and hundreds of permanent jobs. It is anticipated that all ten sites could radically transform the Hedon Road corridor providing economic growth and thousands of new business and employment opportunities. Whilst the prospect of thousands of jobs being created is very appealing, the affects on Paull of such large-scale development on its doorstep needs to be carefully considered. The character of the village, its traffic flows, its unique views, could all change with the placement of industrial development on fields currently used as farmland. Any development could bring enormous benefits to Paull, Hedon Town and the surrounding villages but these need to be considered alongside what might be lost in that process.

VIRTUAL COMMUNITY POLICE MEETING

PEOPLE RARELY ATTENDED Police Community Forums held in the South West Holderness area during 2009 and 2010. In fact community involvement was so low that the Humberside Police stopped holding the forums altogether. But now new social media and interactive internet services mean that forums could be making a comeback albeit online! Humberside Police held their first ever Virtual Community Meeting last June 2011. Thirty six people logged online to

Computer Take me to the Police meeting!

join a conversation on policing matters and concerns. Whilst very much an experiment the exercise did reveal that people are interested in engaging with the police in this way. Whilst one of the initial aims of the virtual meeting was to concentrate on a geographical area, it soon became clear that a topic-based forum might work best in the future a debate on specific issues that would cater for a wider internet audience. This innovative and welcome initiative by Humberside Police follows the forces successful experiment to use Twitter which started in April 2011. This has been very successful. Police Constable Darren Kirkwood for example regularly sends his 'tweets' to nearly 900 people. What do you think is the internet a useful way to communicate with the police on nonemergency issues and concerns? Would you take part in a local virtual community meeting?

There will also be some minor changes to bus times. Download the new 74/75/77 timetable from the EYMS website.

KELSEY GARDENS is one of those hidden gems in the Holderness Crown. Situated between Burstwick and Keyingham, the former Ski Pond as locals knew it, has been converted into a leisure and watersports area area by owners Ian and Chris. The North fishing lake offers opportunities to land bream, carp, roach and tench amongst other spieces, while Canoe and kayaking sessions can be booked at the South lake. Kelsey Gardens is also the home to Hull Model Boat Club who run regular events. Special watersports and leisure days can be arranged to suit your party. Contact Ian on mobile 07973 909 026. SOUTH HOLDERNESS COUNTRYSIDE SOCIETY was set up in 1983 to Make a Better Place for Wildlife and the Patrington-based organisation certainly seems to be doing a good job of this. The Society owns two nature reserves, Beacon Lagoons and Hollym Carrs, and has over 100 subscribing members. The Society has also been bequeathed an old farmhouse, Ivy House, which will act as their headquarters and base of operations. The Society recently got a grant to help them provide a variety of items including bird nesting boxes, bird feeders, bee nest boxes and insect homes. New members and volunteers to work on the nature reserves and other projects are always welcome so if you have time to give and love wildlife and nature, then find out more at: www.southholdernesscountrysidesociety.co.uk
