POST PROGRAM ACTIVITY REPORT

Indonesia Participating Youth The 37th Ship for South East Asian Nation Youth Program 2010

Post to Post Edutainment


For Children of Paper Box House

Background Most of children who live at the slum area do not have proper life like other children who live at a good place. They do not know what good life is and their parents do not have capability to give the best for their children. In order to share the experience and the importance to implement the knowledge from SSEAYP through social activities, we, Indonesia Participating Youth (IPY) 2010 would like to conduct the post program activity. The post program activity is a reflection of our dedication to Indonesian society in general, and to our target message receiver in particular. The activity is aimed to have the short term and long term objective in order to achieve the well received or well understood by the target. Objective In order to achieve the maximum advantage for the children of paper box house particularly, the activity has two specific objectives that we would like to achieve n it is divided into two term;

Short term: to give new knowledge and introduce better life toward edutainment activity

Long term: to inculcate children for having mindset of I have a big dream and I will reach it!

Target The target of this activity was the children within 7-12 years old who live in paper box house in slum area in Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta. Theme The post program activity theme is based on the implementation that we conducted. We want the children to go to post by post and get the benefit from each post with a fun way, so the theme of this activity was Post to Post Edutainment for Children of Paper Box House. Time line

The activity had been conducted on 23 December 2010. That was only one day activity and was held in outside area of where they are living at. Implementation According to the concept of the activity, post to post edutainment has been divided into 4 posts. We make two in one combination of the discussion group in SSEAYP 2010 which has the similarities or could be associated based on the messages that want to deliver to the children. Therefore, we can save the time, energy for the children, and also the effectiveness of the activity. Herewith the four post that we had and the explanation about the implementation of the activity;
1. Post 1 (Environment and Corporate

Social Contribution) The first post was the combination between discussion group Environment and Corporate Social Contribution. In this post explained about some matters relating to a clean and healthy environment, including the planting and caring of trees to combat the increasing number of vehicle exhaust gases and the waste segregation into four categories: plastic, cans, paper, and organic matter. We used the method of puppet-play to tell the importance of protecting trees. With a short story, we tried to explain that tree planting is beneficial for the environment and also to our health. Besides, we also played a waste-sorting game so that these children became eager to sort out as much garbage.
2. Post 2 ( Health and Food Nutrition Education)

The second post was the combination between discussion group health and food nutrition education. We provided counseling to children of paper-box-house about the importance of eating a healthy food for our bodies. It was not only gave the beneficial to our growth in infancy, healthy foods also help us avoid all kinds of diseases which may come primarily digestive problems. And to simplify the message which we wish to convey to the children so well received, we also demonstrated by showing two different images which we have prepared before, which represents healthy child and not healthy child through facial expressions, and conditions which occur in their digestion. To be sure, the core message which we want to convey is to eat healthy foods, your body will become healthy and strong as well, so that eventually we can do all activities in school, learn, and play with friends with a current, active , and excited. Besides counseling, the important thing which we need to deliver is to maintain the cleanliness of our hands, by quote; "wash by hands before and after the activity, especially before and after meals". We know that the activities of the children is no less active as an adult activities, and they often come into contact with various materials and objects when doing activities. So, it should be inculcated early on to maintain awareness of hand hygiene and always wash hands with soap, to kill the germs who accidentally stuck in our hands, so that when we mature, we have been accustomed to doing the activity. We do this by getting counseling children directly cardboard wash their hands with soap in tap water which we provide, and educate how to wash hands properly. For Games and Interaction session, we invite the children to better understanding about healthy and unhealthy foods by selecting directly from the pictures that we have prepared which consist of a variety of healthy foods and unhealthy, which of course close to real life of their day, and then put the pictures

which have been selected into a replica of the character which we have prepared and made "Doraemon", into his magic bag. We do this things for the children of paper-box-house in fully hope of they could continue to remember the message which we convey to transfer them in ways which simple, fun, and close to their world. And in the end, the group who managed to enter a healthy image at most will get a prize of a parcel which had been prepared which were milk box and vitamin C. Finally, all activities at Post 1 ends with yell and cheers from children who had previously been taught by the LO, and provide its own love listening to children who can not be paid off by anything in this world. 3. Post 3 (International Relations and Cross Cultural Understanding Promotion) The third post was the combination between discussion group International Relations and Cross Cultural understanding Promotion. In this post we had activities below: 1. 2. 3. 4. Introducing ASEAN and Japan by map Introducing the flags of ASEAN and Japan Introducing National Costumes of ASEAN-Japan by pictures Games ( card game and flag game )

We used ASEAN-Japan map to explain the participants about the location of the countries, and also mentioned the capital city, the famous things or places in the countries. Then we show the flag of the country to them. We also provided the pictures of national costume ASEAN-Japan, besides we also wear it (especially Philippines and Japan costumes). After that we played a game with them, to mention what country of the flag that we pointed. We give a chocolate that had been sticked by the small flag of ASEAN-Japan. The participants looked happy to join in post 3. Some of them even easily remembered about the information, such as when we played the flag game or if we asked about the capital city they could answer it quickly. They were also happy when we gave them

chocolate as a reward. By this post, we do hope that they can recognize ASEAN countries and Japan in general.
4. Post 4 (Youth Development and

School Education) The fourth post was the combination between discussion group youth development and school education. This post provides the theme of the introduction to the kinds of jobs, dream box, and the socialization of savings. First of all, children were given remarks by the brother and sister who were in charge for the post and then taken to see the posters at the same time these children were asked about the work they see, and be taught how to pronounce the words in English together. After that they were distributed colored paper to write their comments about the jobs they have learned and incorporated these comments into the boxes according to the location of the job poster. After discussing the pictorial poster work, children are encouraged and motivated to express and find out their dreams for the future by writing their dreams and going upstairs to the dream box, but before they put it into the box they have to shout their dreams louder to the world, about which they climbed the stairs before heading to the box of dreams is due before reaching the dreams that we want certain we will be faced various challenges of life and necessary process for it from the ground up to go up the stairs and over the withdrawal. Further more, to teach them another value, children are given savings (piggy bank) and coins (from various countries) as they can take the bank box as souvenir. They were told early on about the importance of saving for the future. At that time they also asked about the point in saving money and why you should save, their answers were different there is a saving to finance his mother and to buy school uniforms, and others. Besides that they also were asked about their visits to previous posts. Rundown

Closing The activity could be seen successfully conducted even though we had an obstacle before it was started. Technically, the main obstacle that we had was about the unpredicted accident. We did not expect that the traffic was not good because of the accident in the highway. Therefore the activity was started very late and the children were tired all the way. But after we reached the place, our team was welcoming them cheerfully and the activity was successfully done.
