Overview
This guide lists and describes the NICE approved archiving devices (see Table 1-2: Approved Archiving Devices on page 14) and media. It also describes the maintenance procedures for the different devices.
NOTE: To avoid a mechanism jam when using labels on archiving media:
Labels must be attached to the recessed label area on archiving media and nowhere else. Labels must be firmly attached and not allowed to peel off or curl at the corners. A label must not be attached on top of another label. Only use the labels that are supplied with the archiving media.

DVD Maintenance
DVD Maintenance
IMPORTANT The DVD drives do not require scheduled cleaning.
NOTE: Try to maintain the balance of the media. Attaching a label to only part of a disc might create an imbalance.
The signal surface is closer to the label side, so take particular care when marking media. Use only felt tip pens when writing directly on media, never hard tip or ball point pens. When not in use, store DVD media vertically and in a dust-free cases. When placing a DVD medium in its case, ensure that it is seated firmly in the center holder. Keep DVD media away from excessive heat, sunlight, or anything that may scratch them. Storage conditions should be held within 5 to 158 degrees Fahrenheit (-15 to 70 C) and 3 to 95% relative humidity. Operating conditions should be between 23 and 131 degrees Fahrenheit (-5 to 55 C) and 3 to 95% relative humidity.
NOTE: DVD media are not based on magnetic signals, so magnets and strong electrical fields will not affect them like they will videotapes, credit cards or floppy discs.
WARNING Do not use cracked or warped media! If a DVD disc breaks inside of the unit, pieces are likely to strike the optics.
20
DVD Maintenance
If DVD media get dirty, you can clean them easily with any on-the-market cleaning kits or basic rubbing alcohol.
WARNING Avoid using abrasives, solvents, or highly acidic cleansers. Use a soft, lint-free cloth, and wipe gently in a straight line from the center of the media, out. This will prevent any potential scrapes from interrupting with the circular path of the signal.

DVD Troubleshooting
DVD Troubleshooting
NOTE: To view eventlog messages:
For Version 8.8 Loggers (NiceLog ISA and NiceCall Focus II), navigate to My Computer > D:\NTLogger\Log. For all other Loggers, navigate to My Computer > D:\NTLogger\Logger\Log.
IMPORTANT
If an error occurs in the DVD, do not restart the Logger before ejecting the archiving media from all DVD drives in the system. Before performing a DVD device assignment change (e.g. from auto-archiving to retrieval or vice versa), ensure that the Loggers front panel doors are fully open because the DVD tray will automatically eject after the assignment change. Failing to do so can cause errors in the Logger.
WARNING When browsing in the My Computer folder, do not browse in the removable disk drives or CD drives as this might cause an interruption in the Logger archiving operation.
22
DVD Troubleshooting
Table 2-2: DVD Troubleshooting Scenarios Problem The following message appears: Backup server is down Description This message appears if the Backup Server window is accidentally closed by the operator. The Logger does not bring the Backup service back up again. In addition, if a medium was in the middle of an archiving process, it becomes unavailable for overwrite and the Logger event log displays error 3: cannot append to bad media The error from the Logger event log is error 3: cannot append to bad media Retrieval Assignment If a medium is in the middle of an archiving process, and an error occurs (e.g. power failure, Logger unexpected shutdown), the medium becomes unavailable for overwrite and the Logger event log displays error 3. If the DVD device assignment is in retrieval mode and the operator inserts a fresh unused medium, the Media failure error appears in the Backup application. To continue archiving, eject the medium and replace it with a new one. To make the medium available for overwrite, you must perform a manual format. Change the device assignment or replace the fresh medium with a used medium that has data recorded on it. Solution Replace the medium in the DVD drive, and shut down and restart the Logger Software to ensure that the Backup Server process is working. If the Logger event log displays error 3, to make the medium available for overwrite, you must perform a manual format.
23
DVD Troubleshooting
Table 2-2: DVD Troubleshooting Scenarios (Continued) Problem DVD medium fails to eject Description The operator attempts to eject a DVD medium using the Logger application, waits for over 20 minutes, and the medium is still not ejected. NOTE: If the medium in the DVD drive has expired and this troubleshooting solution is not performed, and instead the operator restarts the Logger, then the Logger reloads the defective medium. Only days to a month later (depending on the number of recorded channels), will an error appear. This can recur several times, depending on the Loggers success in reloading the defective medium. Solution NOTE: Do not restart the Logger before ejecting the medium! Check the Logger event log for errors. When the event log shows that there is a problem with the DVD device and sends errors (such as -25, -19, -57, -100), eject the medium as follows: 1. Shut down the Logger Software. 2. Right-click the removable letter of the problematic drive and select Eject. If this fails, try to right-click the CD drive letter and select Eject. 3. If Step 2 fails, physically press the DVD physical eject button. 4. If Step 3 fails as well, shut down the OS and the Logger. After a one minute pause, power up the Logger again and, before the OS even starts, promptly push the DVD physical eject button. 5. If Step 4 fails, this indicates that there is a mechanical problem with the DVD device and that it needs to be replaced. To remove the medium from the failed device: a. Locate the small hole at the bottom of the DVD tray. b. Use a sharp tool (such as a needle) to carefully press the button inside the hole (use caution, press gently) to force the tray open. c. Manually pull the tray open and remove the medium.
24
DVD Troubleshooting
Table 2-2: DVD Troubleshooting Scenarios (Continued) Problem Media Expiration Date (error 7 in the event log) Description This means that the Logger cannot overwrite the medium due to one of the following: Solution Remove the medium from DVD device 2 and replace it with a fresh or an expired media (either way the Logger will write to it).
The mediums archiving signature date is very fresh (just recently finished archiving) and the Logger does not write to media that might need to be kept for a certain time before overwriting. The mediums expiration date has not yet been reached. The Logger was archiving to a medium in DVD device 2 and then restarted. When the Logger restarts, it automatically starts writing to the medium in DVD device 1. Thereafter, upon attempting to load a medium to DVD device 2. the error appears.

Each cleaning medium can be used up to 50 times.
WARNING If an AIT archiving drive is accidentally cleaned with a spent cleaning cassette, the used-up cassette will slowly contaminate the drive. The contamination can spread to the archiving medium. The archiving medium can then contaminate a new AIT archiving drive and cause it to fail.
AIT tape drives need to be cleaned periodically, when one of the following alerts is received:
To clean AIT tape drives: 1. When the application displays a message indicating that the drive must be cleaned or when the
cleaning request LED in the drive is lit (every 100 hours of head operation), insert the approved cleaning medium into the drive (see NICE Archiving Devices and Media Reference Guide). The drive will run for about a minute, and then the cleaning medium will be ejected.
2. Remove the cleaning medium from the drive. 3. After each cleaning cycle, mark an X on the label stuck to the cleaning medium.
This provides a record of how many times the medium has been used.

IMPORTANT For DAT72 drives: If a cleaning medium reaches its maximum number of uses (expires) during the middle of a cleaning cycle, it must be replaced:
When a cleaning medium expires, the Clean LED blinks. However, the expired cleaning medium is not automatically ejected from the device. To eject the cleaning medium from the device, open the Backup application, select the medium to be removed and click Eject. The medium is ejected from the drive. Remove the cleaning medium and replace it with a new one. The cleaning cycle continues.
2. Remove the cleaning medium from the drive. 3. After each cleaning cycle, mark an X on the label stuck to the cleaning medium.
This provides a record of how many times the medium has been used.

Overview
Overview
A driver must be installed for most archiving devices. This enables the Operating System to work together with the archiving device. The driver installation is performed after connecting the devices and before initializing the Logger. This section provides instructions for installing drivers for DDS-3, DDS-4, DDS-5, AIT-1, AIT-2 and DVD devices for the following environments:
Installing a Driver in a Windows NT Environment on page 37 Installing a Driver in a Windows 2000 Environment on page 43 Installing a Driver in a Windows 2003 Environment on page 47 Installing a Driver in a Windows XP Environment on page 56
Prerequisites
Before installing an archiving device driver, ensure that you complete the following tasks:
Verify that you have the appropriate driver files. If you are installing a SCSI archiving device: check the registry to ensure that the SCSI recognizes your device. Install the relevant archiving device driver.
NOTE: The archiving device drivers should be installed after the complete installation of the Operating System, including its Service Packs. If there is a Service Pack update after the drivers have been installed, after installing the update, ensure that the approved drivers are installed and that no changes are required due to the installation of the Service Pack. If a change is required, reinstall the drivers according to the instructions in this manual.

Overview
Overview
This section describes the various requirements and installation procedures for DVD software, firmware and driver required updates for all NICE Logger systems with DVD archiving drives. These updates are essential for proper and stable DVD archiving operation. NICE provides a package containing all files required for these updates. Throughout the procedure Performing Updates on page 72, you will be referred to the files provided in this package. To download the package, follow the link below: http://www.extranice.com/EIS/AdditionalResources/Drivers%20Tools%20and%20Utilities/D VD%20Updates%20Package.zip
Prerequisites
Prior to any system update activities are performed on the Logger:
IMPORTANT If the manual archiving fails, do not proceed with any activities and inform the appropriate managers, supervisors, etc. Failure to do so can endanger data on the Hard Disk Drives!
If there are any media in the DVD drives, ensure that they are ejected.
TIP: Copy all software installation files and OS files to the Desktop so that the installation is completed without using the DVD drives.
Performing Updates
IMPORTANT Print Table 6-1: DVD Software, Firmware and Driver Updates List on page 73. Follow the steps in the list and when completed, mark them off in the checkboxes provided. Do not deviate from the explicitly stated steps in the list.

A
NiceLog ISA 8.80 Logger PIO Mode Hotfix for DVD-RAM
NOTE: This hot fix applies only to NiceLog ISA 8.80 Logger systems with DVD IDE devices and Prox1560 CPU cards.
Problem Description
After the Windows IDE/ATAPI Port driver receives a cumulative total of six time-out or cyclical redundancy check CRC errors, the driver gradually reduces the communications speed (transfer mode) from the highest to lower DMA modes. If the driver continues to receive excessive time-out or CRC errors, the driver eventually reduces the transfer mode to the slowest PIO mode.
Solution Description
The PIO mode problem is solved by installing a newer Ali IDE driver and by applying the registry patch which strengthens immunity of the OS in downgrading of ATAPI transfer mode by receiving CRC errors or excessive time out from IDE Devices.
