What is Admiralty ENC Training?

Developed by the United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) in response to demand from leading shipping companies, the Admiralty ENC Training programme covers all aspects of ENC (Electronic Navigational Chart) use within ECDIS, from loading charts to maintenance and display. This essential programme of training has been devised to ensure that the ENC can be used safely and to its full potential.

The Future of Navigation

The United Kingdom Hydrographic Office (UKHO) is the leading supplier of official Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) authorised for use in primary navigation under SOLAS Regulations. We believe that IMOs decision to mandate the carriage of ECDIS puts a powerful tool into the hands of seafarers that can mean safer and more efficient voyages, and at the same time help to protect the marine environment but only if the electronic chart is understood and used properly.

about differences between the display of traditional paper chart information and the ENC on their ECDIS screen. Recent, high-profile, ECDIS related groundings illustrate the necessity for greater understanding of the chart display, and could have been prevented through ENC training. While many aspects of ECDIS provide benefits in time savings and accuracy, the potential benefits are highly dependent on proper use. If watch officers are unfamiliar with the systems in use, or are confused by the information presented, ECDIS can become more of a liability than a benefit. The change in mind-set needed to shift from paper to electronic charts intensifies the risks caused by lack of adequate ECDIS training Alan M. Weigel Maritime Reporter

The Need for ENC Training

Fitting of ECDIS will become mandatory in a rolling timetable that begins in July 201 The legislation will 2. be phased by vessel type and size to eventually apply to almost all large merchant vessels and passenger ships. Generic and ECDIS type-specific training covering functionality and system integration is provided by ECDIS Manufacturers and Maritime Colleges, however many mariners remain unsure

The Training Programme

Training Format
The Admiralty ENC Training programme is available as Computer Based Training or through an on-site course. The programme is made up of a series of training modules aimed at the maritime professional which provide relevant information on the generation, maintenance and the presentation of Electronic Navigational Chart (ENC) data within an ECDIS. The Admiralty ENC Training programme is available to all shipping companies, maritime colleges and training schools worldwide that wish to provide training in electronic navigation to seafarers. It can be incorporated into an existing programme of study or run as a standalone training option. Training is provided as a comprehensive package that includes a full syllabus, course content, student material in the form of workbooks and handouts as well as detailed guidance and notes for trainers. UKHO also offers train the trainer courses from its main site in Taunton, UK.

Training Syllabus ENC What is it?

Learn what constitutes an official ENC and the regulatory requirements relating to electronic charts and ECDIS and other types of electronic charting. You will explore the benefits and disadvantages of the ENC against raster and paper charts and fully understand the data structure of an ENC.

and how that affects you as a mariner. Recognise current issues regarding the accuracy and quality and how developments such as high density ENCs will assist decision making. Understand the importance of ENC updates, how consistency through ENCs is managed and how they are distributed.

ENC Structure, limitations and developments

Understand how the ENC vector chart format IHO S-57 standard is structured and how it is managed and maintained. Seafarers explore the limitations of current standards and discover how the future IHO standards (S-100 +) will affect you and your company.

ENC - Production, maintenance and distribution

Explore the processes and issues involved in the data capture, maintenance and updating of electronic charts

ECDIS Overview of the main functions

Understand the international regulatory requirements of ECDIS including the carriage requirement timeframe of ECDIS implementation. Appreciate the benefits of ECDIS, its capabilities and also its limitations. Learn from the mistakes of ECDIS related incidents.

The Electronic Chart in ECDIS

Look at how traditional paper chart information is displayed on the ECDIS. Explore how charting scales are handled, how to safely remove chart information clutter, how to view the quality and currency of data and why apparent mismatches occur. Learn about new chart symbology, viewing chart notes, chart corrections and how to see future TSS implementation. As well as learning to recognise areas where the ENC is based on older or less reliable data, seafarers will also fully understand how to interrogate the ECDIS to gain access to more information and how display settings influence chart display.

ECDIS Chart Display an introduction to S-52

This module enables seafarers to familiarise themselves with the appearance of electronic chart information displayed in an ECDIS. Understand how the ECDIS displays official ENC data as a system ENC (SENC) defined by the IHO standard S-52. Understand how S-52 defines and controls certain display parameters and how these can affect navigation at sea.

ECDIS Route Monitoring and Planning

Seafarers will learn how to appreciate the value of correct safety settings and how chart information is used to set the automatic warning parameters.
