One of 10 siblings,
Cordell was a big, strong
man 5-10 and 255
pounds. His brother Leo
rushed to B.C. from Win-
nipeg the morning after
he found out Cordell was
in a coma.
His sister Anita fol-
lowed three weeks later,
as the family contem-
plated taking Cordell off
life support. His brain
was swollen from the
beating and he lay in a
hospital bed in a tangle
of tubes.
They didnt expect
him to survive, says
Anita.
But two days after she
arrived, Cordell opened
his eyes. He began fol-
lowing his sister Trudy
around the room. Trudy
had spent the past month
at his side, everyday at
breakfast. His sister An-
gie came by at lunch, and
at supper his wife Tina
would take over.
He is quite the mira-
cle, says Anita.
There is no other way
to explain his progress,
even though he has a
long way ahead of him.
Within days of open-
ing his eyes, Cordell
was talking and began
eating solid food. By the
end of June, he was well
enough to celebrate his
51st birthday. The entire
family gathered around
him to watch him blow
out the candles on an ice-
cream cake. He now tries
to feed himself.
Paralysed on his entire
left side, Cordell still isnt
the brother Anita re-
members.
Cordell ran his own
business Clean-Pro
Janitorial the familys
only source of income.
Now his sisters,
brother and 22-year-old
daughter are pitching
in to keep the company
aoat.
It is pretty devastat-
ing, she says.
When you think
about it, he will never be
the same guy again.
On Tuesday, Cordell
had surgery to replace
the bone ap in his skull
that was removed when
his brain was swollen.
Once he recuperates,
doctors hope to move
him to Ridge Meadows
Hospital, but he most
likely wont walk prop-
erly again.
Although he now talks
non-stop, Anita says
Cordell doesnt realize
where he is, tears off the
tubes and tries to get
out of his hospital bed.
He wants to go home,
to somewhere familiar.
Nursing staff sometimes
have to restrain him by
tying him to his bed.
Every day is different
but he is making awe-
some baby steps, says
Anita.
But once Cordell re-
turns to Maple Ridge,
hell need rehabilitation
care, physiotherapy and
counselling.
Besides running his
cleaning business, the
family is now scram-
bling to raise funds
to meet those needs.
Theyve already re-
ceived a few donations
a car from Maple Ridge
Chrysler for six months,
$100 from Husky Gas,
and Kimberly Dugale
from Westgate Den-
tal has donated $500.
Dugale is challenging
other business to do the
same.
I would like to thank
everyone for all the do-
nations received to date
and for any future do-
nations in, says Anita.
No donation is too
small.

Teen douses kitchen fre
A quick thinking teenager saved his home from
going up in smoke after a re started in its kitchen
Monday night.
The family was in the basement of the house, in the
12400-block of 231B Street, when someone smelled
smoke around 10 p.m.
Cardboard placed on atop a stove that was acciden-
tally turned on, had set alight. The re was con-
tained to the stove, but burned kitchen cabinets.
While his mom called 911, the 14-year-old ran into
the backyard, grabbed a garden hose and put out
the ames before the re department arrived.
Fire chief Dane Spence said he showed great pres-
ence of mind.
Three people were taken to hospital after inhaling
smoke.

The old Northumber-
land Court got a new
owner last year and
a proposal was made
in December to build
29 townhouses and
commercial space on
the old Fraser Street
complex, just south of
downtown.
So whats happened
since then, asks the
mayor of Maple Ridge.
It looked like it was
moving along well.
Its just weve heard
nothing. Theres been
no action on the le,
Ernie Daykin said
Wednesday.
Late last year, council
approved rst reading
of the application.
Staff have asked Van-
couver developer Ghal-
ib Rawji what his plans
are for the property,
and depending on the
response, council could
order the remaining,
vacant buildings once
know as the ghetto
torn down.
Hes got 30 days to
do whatever he wants
to do, then we can deal
with it when we come
back at the end of Au-
gust.
Because of its his-
tory, theres an expec-
tation that something
should happen down
there. I think weve
been very gracious,
said Daykin.
Maybe hes taking
advantage of my good
nature. Well give him
a little nudge and see
what happens.
Rawji bought the
complex last year, af-
ter years of municipal
and police frustration
at controlling the drug
haven.
He later bought the
lot immediately to
the west, with access
to 224th Street so he
could build another 13
apartments, as well as
ofce space.
Rawji says theres
been no change in
plans and he has been
in contact with Maple
Ridge staff.
Were still moving
forward with our plans.
Weve got all our plans
in place already.
He said legal issues
have delayed the proj-
ect and hell soon be
able to give more de-
tails.
Daykin said council
has been working on
restoring Northumber-
land Court since elect-
ed in 2008.

toned up before the

Maple Ridge council-
lors will vote their suc-
cessors a raise which
given the high likelihood
of current councillors
being re-elected, means
theyll be deciding their
own salaries.
Just how much that
will be, will be based on
a staff report that lands
on councils desk Mon-
day.
A review in 2008 re-
sulted in a healthy raise
for councillors of 53 per
cent, while the mayors
salary jumped by 28 per
cent.
In the previous raise,
council decided to peg
salaries at the 65 percen-
tile range, so 65 per cent
of the other councils
salaries, would be below
Maple Ridge salaries,
while 35 per cent would
be above.
Councillors now make
about $42,000 yearly,
while the mayor earns
$98,500.
The amount of increas-
es proposed in Mondays
report isnt yet known,
but Mayor Ernie Daykin
isnt backing another
major wage hike for his
position.
If theres a big adjust-
ment Id struggle with
that.
So, too, does Coun.
Cheryl Ashlie, who
wants a new way of
analyzing councillors
duties, perhaps via an
external agency to de-
termine the pay.
Council salaries cant
be so low that they only
attract the wealthy, but
need to be adequate to
ensure a broad range of
the population on coun-
cil.
If shes successful in
that, shed like the same
approach applied to se-
nior staff at district hall
because she says the
public is reaching its
capacity to pay. Even-
tually, there should be
an end point for coun-
cil salaries rather than
constant increases that
have to be borne by the
taxpayer, she said.
While in 2009, Ashlie
tried to have a similar
review of considered at
Metro Vancouvers la-
bour relations bureau,
but that was stalled be-
cause of another review.
I think were ad-
equately compensated.
Personally, I dont need
another dime.

Think you can do
a better job than the
bunch sitting around
the table now?
Then get your name
in by Oct. 14 and youll
be on the ballot for the
Nov. 19 election that
will choose who runs
Maple Ridge for the
next three years.
To give people an idea
of what it means to en-
ter a campaign and to
hold ofce, district staff
held an information
session June 20. It drew
about a dozen possible
new politicians.
The rules for cam-
paign nancing are
unlikely to change this
election, despite a re-
port by an election task
force.
There are no legis-
lative changes in the
works that will affect
this years vote, said
Ceri Marlo, legislative
services manager.
The report from the
Local Government
Elections Task Force,
a Union of B.C. Munici-
palities and provincial
government project,
makes several recom-
mendations.
Some of those: requir-
ing campaign nance
disclosure forms to be
led within 90 days of
an election and to put
those forms online;
extending the term
of ofce to four years
(from three); and set-
ting spending limits for
campaign expenses.
Municipalities contin-
ue to try increase voter
turnout above the usual
30 per cent.
District spokesman
Fred Armstrong told
council that local gov-
ernment affects people
more than any other
level and that Metro
Vancouver will be mak-
ing a video to get peo-
ple out to vote.
Social media also will
be used to reach young-
er voters, he said.
Coun. Craig Speirs
said a turnout of 30 per
cent of eligible voters
in Maple Ridge isnt
good enough.
The price of democ-
racy is a debt in blood,
he said.
There are other mu-
nicipalities where the
turnout is even low-
er, said Mayor Ernie
Daykin.
Nomination period
begins Oct. 4, so there
are only 10 days to le
the papers with the dis-
trict and get on to the
ballot.
Advance polls are
open Nov. 5 and 9.
Coun. Linda King said
the district has worked
hard in previous elec-
tions to increase the
turnout, but the num-
bers dont change and
she hoped social media
would get more people
to the polls.

BCCLA: Cities must
set up prison polling
stations for elections
The B.C. Civil Liberties Association has
written letters to nine B.C. municipalities
and Corrections B.C. to ensure polling
stations are set up for prisoners to vote in
municipal elections in the fall.
The Local Government Act disqualifes
from voting those persons who are pris-
oners serving more serious (indictable)
ofences and those who are being held in
custody after being found not guilty on
account of mental disorder.
But prisoners who are awaiting trial in
prison (remand) and those convicted of
summary ofences who are in prison have
the legal right to vote.
It is imperative that those who have
the right to vote be afforded the means
to do so. People held in jail who have
not been convicted of any crime should
not be denied their vote, said Robert
Holmes, president of the BCCLA.
The law and their sentence does
not deprive them of their right to vote
and municipal governments should
not, through inaction, do so either. As
prison populations grow, this issue
will become more pressing, and this
population more and more politically
significant.
Unlike provincial or federal elections,
there is not a province-wide body like
Elections B.C. to oversee municipal
elections and ensure adequate polling
stations and outreach in areas like
prisons.
B.C. has no centralized organization
to oversee standards for voting and
elections in municipalities. That presents
major dif culties getting the message
through to many diferent communities
that the law requires they make facilities
available so that everyone entitled to
vote can do so,said Holmes. We expect
that cities will recognize their legal duties
to ensure that everyone who may vote,
can vote.
The BCCLA has sent letters to Nanaimo,
Maple Ridge, Chilliwack, Prince George,
Saanich, Surrey, Kamloops, and Port
Coquitlam. The Association has also writ-
ten to Corrections B.C. to assist eligible
prisoners to vote.

Bear was born in
March 2009 and had
been on active duty
since completing his
training in 2010. He was
one of 44 police dogs
stationed in the Lower
Mainland and part of an
RCMP integrated team
that attends an average
of 12,000 calls annually.
Bear was the second
RCMP police dog killed
in the line of duty in as
many days.
Early Tuesday morn-
ing, a police dog named
Bo was killed in Rich-
mond after the vehicle
he was in with his han-
dler collided with a pow-
er pole.
We are all saddened
with the tragic loss our
police service dogs. All
of our dogs provide us
with a key component
in apprehending crimi-
nals, Ridge Meadows
RCMP Cpl. Alanna Dun-
lop said Wednesday.
They also assist us in
recovering lost persons,
nding key evidence
and calming violent
people down. They all
add so much to the pub-
lics safety. The handler
is quite distraught, and
is getting the support he
needs at this time.
All dog handlers are
regular members of the
RCMP who volunteer
for police dog services.
Most spend years as
quarries, training
with experience dog
handlers to learn ba-
sic skills. The quarry
plays the bad guy, pre-
tending to ee crime
scenes, resist arrest,
run from police, hide
in buildings and act ag-
gressively. When clad
in a bite suit, made of
thick canvas or linen, or
when wearing a padded
sleeve, a quarry gets to
be a police dogs chew
toy.
Once trained, the quar-
ry nally gets a pup. Po-
tential police dogs are
monitored monthly and
are tested at 49 days old,
then at four, eight and
12 months.
When the pups are
about 14 to 16 months
old, they are ready to
return to kennels for ba-
sic training, which lasts
about four months.
The bond starts from
Day 1 and the bond gets
stronger the more time
they spend together,
said Sgt. Chris Moore,
with the RCMPs Lower
Mainland Police Dog
Service.
The stronger the
bond, the better the
teams performance.
These dogs are not only
working animals. They
are part of the mem-
bers family.

INSPIRED: Thanks to
our Amazing Volunteers
Be Part of the Ofcial
224 Street Ribbon
Cutting Ceremony
Mark your calendar! On Saturday, July 23, 2011, everyone
is invited downtown to celebrate the completion of the
Downtown Enhancement Project that was a joint project of
the Government of Canada, Province of BC and the District of
Maple Ridge. The project began in April of 2010, at Lougheed
Highway and 223 Street, and the nal touches were put on
the last block between McIntosh Avenue and Dewdney Trunk
Road just a couple of months ago. The project included the
replacement of old water mains, storm sewers and sanitary
sewers. During the excavation, pipes estimated to be close
to a century old were unearthed. On the surface, the project
included realignment of many of the roads, improvements
to the sidewalks, trees, plants, benches, garbage cans,
bike racks and street lighting. In addition, the installation of
street mosaics created under the guidance of the Community
Heritage Commission, have made our downtown a special
place to work, live and play. The entire community is invited
to take part in the ribbon cutting that will take place at
noon on Saturday, July 23 at the intersection of McIntosh
Avenue and 224 Street. Theres going to be music, visits
by the RCMP, Maple Ridge Fire Department and a preview
of the nal mosaics and an amazing collection of twelve
Historical Walking Tour signs researched by Val Patenaude,
Director of the Maple Ridge Museum that will soon be
installed throughout the downtown. Been downtown lately?
Your downtown merchants are inviting you down with lots
of great sales and an Amazing Race contest that will
allow you to explore the Town Centre like never before!

Canada Day and
Caribbean Festival
were SPECTACULAR
The last couple of weekends thousands of people have
enjoyed the hard work of dozens of local volunteers who
organized a spectacular Canada Day Celebration on
July 1, and the best Caribbean Festival yet on July 9 and
10. On Canada Day the combination of the Haney Farmers
Market and Canada Day made for an amazing start to
the kids summer vacation with concerts, displays and
an inspiring ceremony that included the Royal Canadian
Legion Colour Guard, Ridge Meadows RCMP and Maple
Ridge Fire Department with the giant Canadian Flag rst
unveiled at the Olympic Torch Relay hanging proudly over
the park. The Farmers Market had their best day ever with
fresh fruits, vegetables and baked goods as well as the
amazing creations of area artisans ying off the tables
at a record pace. A week later we were treated to the
sights, sounds and tastes of the Caribbean with the 11th
annual Caribbean Festival. By all accounts, the highlight
was the Saturday night concert by the California Beach
Boys Tribute Band. The atmosphere was amazing, as was
the music! Our downtown has never been busier and
everyone had a great time over the new two day format.
Mayor and Council would like to extend their appreciation
for the contribution of every volunteer, from the event
organizers to the folks who manned the trafc barricades
and kept the park clean from litter. You are amazing!
Jessie Patrie was watching a Canucks game on TV and ipped the dial
over to SHAW Cables coverage of the regular Maple Ridge Council
Meeting. It so happened that a few minutes later he saw Mayor Ernie
Daykin draw his name out of the bin as the winner of the iPad 2 that
was the grand prize for a contest that kicked off at the Home Show.
Entrants became eligible when they signed up for one of the online
newsletters that are published and sent out by the District. Jessie
will now be able to read Council This Week, the District Monthly
eNewsletter and our monthly Invest Maple Ridge e Newsletter on his
iPad 2. Congratulations to Jessie and thanks to everyone that entered!

Over the next few
hours, the river level
should peak, then start
dropping, only to rise
again in a few days,
District of Maple Ridge
spokesman Fred Arm-
strong said Thursday
afternoon.
Were keeping an
eye on everything in
our area, he added.
The biggest thing
we want to communi-
cate to people is, typi-
cally, the river levels,
when the kids are out
of school, they have
dropped down quite a
bit.
But not this year.
The river is running
high and fast and any-
one who ventures out
should be completely
prepared.
The district contin-
ues to make regular
inspections of the
dikes and is watching a
fast-owing stretch of
the Fraser from the Al-
bion ferry dock to the
Haney Wharf, which
could be subject to
erosion given the fast
ows that have been
going on for weeks.
So far, weve had no
issues. Were not see-
ing any erosion, Arm-
strong said.
The high water makes
work more difcult for
the crew at Northview
Enterprises log sort,
next to the Port Haney
Wharf.
But the work has to
go on because the mills
are waiting for their
logs, said Gord Bolt.
The operation sorts
logs from the area and
sends them to mills,
which can either be in
the Lower Mainland or
China.
Despite the fast wa-
ter, theyre still getting
the job done.
Were still a couple
feet away from critical
levels, Bolt said.
Were still a ways
away from considering
shutting down.
A dozen people work
at the sorting opera-
tion, which has three
671-horsepower Super-
winder boom boats to
push around the logs.
Hes worked there for
10 years and has never
seen the river this high
at this time of the year,
in mid-summer.
Thats the odd part
of the whole thing
normally its reced-
ing right now.
Most companies
along the river are still
operating, he added.
Chief Jay Bailey, with
the Katzie First Na-
tion, said the high wa-
ter makes it difcult to
catch sh. Its hard to
know how many sock-
eye salmon are now
in the river because of
the restrictions theyre
under, while they no
longer can catch chi-
nook.
There seems to be
in no danger of the
reserve ooding, he
added.
Meanwhile, B.C.
Hydro was planning a
routine release of wa-
ter from the Stave Lake
to bring levels down to
between 80 and 81.5
metres. Thursday the
level was at 81.5 m.
Its difficult to catch fish: Katzie

Freshet
According to the River Forecast Centre, the 2011 freshet, the term used to describe the annual snow melt
for the Fraser River watershed, has been abnormal due to the cool weather this spring.

J
ordan Wright is
a 12-year-old boy
who loves toy
cars and loves to go on
amusement park rides.
But Jordan nds it dif-
cult to walk and is con-
ned to a wheelchair
part-time with Duch-
enne muscular dystro-
phy, an inherited neuro-
muscular degenerative
disease that, over time,
breaks down the mus-
cles in the body.
Symptoms usually oc-
cur between the ages of
one- and six-years-old
and many people are
conned to a wheel-
chair by the time they
are Jordans age.
In 2008, Jordan went
on a trip of a lifetime.
Through the Sunshine
Foundation of Canada,
Jordan left the com-
forts of home for the
rst time in his life. He
waved goodbye to his
parents and boarded a
plane for Disneyland in
California.
It was a little nerve-
wracking, says Tiina,
Jordans mother, smil-
ing as she remembers
the occasion. But you
know that they are with
professional doctors
and nurses that go on
the trip.
The Sunshine Founda-
tion of Canada provides
dreams for children
who have severe physi-
cal disabilities as well as
life-threatening illness-
es. Founded in 1987 by a
London, Ontario police
ofcer who lost his own
son to muscular dystro-
phy, the foundation has
made dreams come true
for 6,700 children across
the country.
Called DreamLifts,
around 80 children are
given a one-day trip to
an exciting destination
of choice. There is a
Dreamlifts in the Lower
Mainland once every
four years.
The next lift will take
place in 2012 and for
the past two years The
Sunshine Foundation of
Canada has been active-
ly fundraising to hope-
fully send 100 children
on a dream-fullling
trip.
The Meadow Gardens
Golf Club will be host-
ing a fundraising golf
tournament to raise
money for the 2012
DreamLifts on Sept. 16.
The tournament will be
a best ball Texas scram-
ble with numerous food
and drink holes along
the course.
All proceeds, less golf
course fees, will go to
children living in the
Lower Mainland who
have requested dreams
from the Sunshine
Foundation.
The average cost of a
DreamLifts is $300,000.
Tiina says her son
came back a different
boy.
He went on the plane
nervous and he got off
the plane condent,
and independent, she
says.
On his trip, she added,
Jordan was just like ev-
eryone else, not point-
ed at or looked at or
judged.

A proposed vehicle
levy to nance transit
upgrades should charge
motorists more if they
live in frequently served
Vancouver and less in
transit-poor areas with
no real alternative to
driving, some mayors
say.
The regional mayors
council voted last week
to pay for the Evergreen
Line and a package
of broader transit up-
grades through a two-
cent hike in the gas tax,
coupled with at least one
other to-be-determined
source.
A vehicle levy possi-
bly ranging from $10 to
$40 per vehicle is being
proposed by TransLink
to serve as that second
source, but its unclear
how it would be applied.
TransLink last fall pro-
posed a vehicle levy that
would vary based on the
cars carbon footprint
it would be low for an
efcient hatchback or
hybrid and steep for a
gas-guzzling SUV.
Thats again an option
this time, but ofcials
say its not set in stone.
Delta Mayor and
Metro board chair Lois
Jackson argues the
levy, dubbed a Trans-
portation Improvement
Fee, should instead vary
based on the level of lo-
cal transit service.
It should be more ex-
pensive in Vancouver,
Burnaby places where
you do have 15-minute
service, she said.
People in outlying
areas with no service
should pay a lesser fee
for the vehicle levy, be-
cause theyre having to
pay already with tax on
gasoline. Thats their
contribution because
they have to have a ve-
hicle or two vehicles in
their family.
Many residents with
next-to-no bus service
also pay $200 or more on
their property taxes to-
wards TransLink, Jack-
son said.
Surrey Mayor Dianne
Watts also backs a grad-
uated vehicle levy.
She said it should ap-
ply only when local
transit service is well
developed areas such
as Burnaby, Vancouver
and Richmond.
It wouldnt apply in
faster-growing areas
like Surrey, she sug-
gested, but those areas
would instead raise
money for TransLink
through new develop-
ment cost charges when
new subdivisions are
developed.
Since the Burrard Pen-
insula is mostly built-
out, such fees would
play little to no role
there, Watts said.
Its about being equi-
table and fair, she said.
Its not good enough to
simply complain about
the various funding
mechanisms under con-
sideration, Watts said.
A million more people
are coming to the Lower
Mainland over the next
couple of decades, 70
per cent of them to the
south of Fraser or north-
east sector, she noted.
You have to make a
choice, Watts said. Do
you want another half a
million cars on the road
with more congestion?
Or do you want to put
a better transportation
system in place so we
wont have those prob-
lems?
Watts was among the
majority of mayors who
last week supported the
proposed funding strat-
egy, while Jackson was
one of eight who voted
against it, fearing the
vehicle levy or other
secondary source might
not be ultimately sup-
ported by the province,
forcing an increase in
TransLinks property
tax to make up the dif-
ference.
For the longer term
there has to be a conver-
sation around tolling,
Watts added. South
of the Fraser is dispro-
portionately penalized
through the tolling pol-
icy in place.
Langley City Mayor
Peter Fassbender said
the region needs to look
hard at tolling exist-
ing bridges using more
modest tolls.
He said a graduated
vehicle levy that is
much reduced in under-
served suburbs is worth
considering.
Car levy should vary by transit level: mayors
Underserved areas might be exempt
or pay another way

Transportation Min-
ister Blair Lekstrom
says he has the full
support of Premier
Christy Clark in agree-
ing to Metro Vancou-
ver mayors plan for
a two-cent gas tax in-
crease for TransLink.
The provinces sup-
port of the tax hike
was called into ques-
tion Monday when
Clark told a radio sta-
tion shes concerned
about the affordability
for motorists.
Without the extra
gas tax, which would
generate $40 million a
year to help fund the
Evergreen Line and
other transit upgrades,
the fragile deal to get
the stalled SkyTrain
extension to Coquit-
lam built would likely
collapse.
I stand behind
what Ive committed
to, Lekstrom said
Wednesday, adding he
has spoken with the
premier and ensured
theyre both on the
same page.
Nobody likes new
taxes I would concur
with that.
But he said the may-
ors can count on the
province legislating
the fuel tax increase
this fall as he prom-
ised provided mayors
formally vote for it in
a pending nancial
supplement after pub-
lic consultation and re-
view by the TransLink
commissioner.
I will not waver one
inch, Lekstrom said.
This has gone on far
longer than I think the
public wanted.
Clark has also
penned a letter to may-
ors pledging her sup-
port, he conrmed.
Both the proposed
gas tax hike and the
prospect of either a
$10-to-$40 vehicle levy
or a second regional
carbon tax to support
TransLinks expansion
have stoked erce ob-
jections from motorists
who say they already
pay too much for gas.
A secondary source
beyond the gas tax is
needed to generate
a total of $70 million
for the full package
of transit upgrades
TransLink is propos-
ing.
Mayors will be asked
to commit to the fund-
ing supplement this
fall even though the
secondary source will
not yet be approved by
the province. If it ulti-
mately falls through, a
property tax increase
of $23 per average
home would take ef-
fect in 2013.
Clark previously told
News 1130 she under-
stands people arent
excited about paying
more for gas and that
her focus is on how we
make life more afford-
able for people rather
than less affordable.
While several may-
ors last week voted
against the plan, most
of the dissenters are
worried about its po-
tential to trigger a
property tax increase
and still stand behind
increasing the gas tax.
The package of up-
grades includes an
express bus route
in Surrey on King
George Boulevard, a
new Langley-White
Rock route, RapidBus
service on Highway
1, more frequent Sea-
Bus service, SkyTrain
station upgrades and
generally enhanced
transit service.

A
new chapter
in my life has
begun.
As of last week, I
have taken up a new
position as invisible
caregiver in the home
of my parents.
I say invisible be-
cause neither of them
will accept the fact that
they need caregiving,
and in many ways, they
dont.
Thus, for now, Im
just staying with them
while they tell me all
the things they need
done around the house.
For each elderly
person whose rela-
tives believe he or
she needs support,
there is a unique set
of circumstances and
thus, as I have often
spoken about in my
approach to parenting,
there is also a need for
a unique plan for each
one.
There is no one-size-
ts-all answer to the
most fundamental
question that arises:
how can you help your
parents maintain as
much independence as
possible while limiting
the risk of danger to
them?
As parents, my wife
and I tried to develop
competence in our chil-
dren by exposing them
to and reinforcing the
basic skills we felt they
would need to succeed
in school and in life in
general.
We then gave them
as many opportunities
in as wide a variety of
activities as possible, to
develop the condence
that they could take
on challenges and be
reasonably successful.
And overriding all
lessons, we empha-
sized the importance
of character and being
good people.
In beginning the pro-
cess of caring for my
aging parents, I have
found myself using a
similar framework for
strategizing on how to
be supportive without
being invasive.
I want them to do
what they can, with
the competencies they
have had for decades,
to look after them-
selves in their own
home.
I am denitely not
here to criticize or
change their routines
or activities.
In so doing, I hope
they will maintain a
condence level that
ensures they still feel
they are in control of
their lives.
In my case, I have a
relatively uncompli-
cated situation.
My dad is physically
very weak, the result
of a form of leuke-
mia that reduces the
number and effective-
ness of red blood cells.
He has lost about 40
pounds over the past
two years and looks
more like a skeleton
than a man. He is
exhausted all the time.
Still, he is as mentally
sharp as ever and,
for the most part, is
able to get around the
house and take care of
himself.
For him, I
am trying to
be his arms
and legs, get-
ting lists of
things hed be
doing around
the house if
he wasnt so
useless (his
term), asking
him how to
do them and
where his
tools are and
thus restoring both
his pride in his home
appearance and his
usefulness as a super-
visor of my work. He
has enjoyed the rst
week of us catching up
on some painting and
cleaning jobs.
My mom is healthy
(Its no good for me to
even think about being
sick with your dad like
he is) and determined
to take care of the
inside of the house.
She ironed my under-
wear this week, so I
know shes still taking
care of business in the
housework realm.
For her, I am an
emotional support, tak-
ing away some of the
worry she has about
my dads depression
issues and walking be-
hind him one step, with
my hand on his belt, so
that if he goes down,
hes not going
to hit the oor
hard enough
to do serious
damage.
Shes been
afraid to let
him do any-
thing for fear
of him hurt-
ing himself,
but with me
around, he
can do more
of what he
wants and she
can worry a bit less,
but a small bit.
I am in their home,
so I am living their
routines and they are
living their lives much
as they have for the
64 years theyve been
married competently
and condently.
As for character, well,
the lessons are coming
my way. Their pride in
their independence and
their concern for oth-
ers, despite their own
personal challenges,
remind me each day of
their right to dignity
and respect in their
treatment by others,
especially me.

B
esides the rains
nally subsiding
(almost), there
are some sure signs
that summer has nally
arrived: a sudden run
on Corona beer and
limes; the smell of
barbeques permeating
the early evening air;
and the re-emergence
of kayaks and canoes
on the roof racks of
weekend warriors.
Another, more subtle
sign of the warmer
weather is the arrival of summer heath-
ers at your local garden centre.
There are three species of summer
heather that I would like to touch on,
with two of them being widely available
and the third worth looking for.
The first of these, Erica cinerea, is a
native of Europe, Zone 6 hardy and much
resembles the winter-flowering species
(Erica carnea or x darleyensis) with its
fine needled foliage.
It also features a broad colour range
from white (Alba), to shell pink (Pink
Ice), right up to an eye-catching magen-
ta (Atrosanguinea).
Erica cinerea forms a typical rounded
or mounding shrub and is well-suited to
mass planting, where individual plants
can grow together as a tall groundcover
and provide a much greater visual im-
pact when in bloom.
There are several gold-leaved cultivars
available, including Golden Sport, with
its amber foliage and rose-pink flowers,
as well as Celebration, which features
unnatural-looking, but attractive electric
yellow needles contrasted by pure white
blooms.
Two other good varieties to keep an
eye out for include P.S. Patrick (purple)
and C.D. Eason (magenta-pink).
Erica cinerea has a blooming period
that ranges from late June to September,
depending on the variety.
Calluna vulgaris, or Scotch heather,
is another worthy shrub that often gets
overlooked because of its upright, almost
spiky growth. This unfortunate snub at
first glance robs many of us of one of the
more hardy heathers (Zone 5) that also
provides long seasons of both foliar and
flower colour.
Although summer blooming, their ap-
peal begins in early spring when the new
growth of many cultivars such as Red
Fred, Spring Torch, Leslie Slinger,
Moon Glow and Flamingo show their
cream, yellow, pink or red tips mak-
ing for a display that rivals its blooming
season.
When in flower, the abundant double
white flowers of Kinlochruel make it
one of the better choices for an Alba
garden, while the intensely metallic foli-
age of
Silver Knight is a year-round focal
point.
This species also includes the bud
bloomers, or varieties whose flowers
do not open and, because of this, retain
their colour for months on end, often
lasting through to January.
Finally, as the regular flowering season
fades and frosts make an appearance,
many of the gold-leaved cultivars (such
as Firefly and Hoyerhagen) shift to a
dramatic reddish-orange for the balance
of winter.
As mentioned earlier, the upright habit
and coarse scale-like needles of Calluna
vulgaris make it an excellent foil for the
predominantly green mounds (when not
in bloom) of Erica.
My last summer heather prospect is
Irish heath, or Daboecia cantabrica
which can be a bit hard to find. It
features dark green foliage composed of
tiny leaves with an erect growth habit,
often reaching heights of 45 centimetres.
The bell-shaped flowers are fewer in
number, but about three times larger
than most heather, and they sit well
above the foliage on airy spikes.
The real clincher here is the long
blooming season, as many varieties of
Irish heath steadily flower from July to
October.
Rainbow is a variegated form with ir-
regular streaks of gold in the foliage and
contrasting purple blooms.
Some other locally available cultivars
include Alba (white), Arielle (magen-
ta), Vanessa (purple) and Waleys Red.
In general, summer heathers are best
used in foreground groupings of three
to five plants, although larger mass dis-
plays can be appropriate, depending on
the scale of the garden.
They also combine well with small co-
nifers such as Thuja Rheingold, dwarf
balsam fir (Abies balsamea Nana),
Blue Star juniper and Chamaecyparis
Heatherbun.
Perennials are another good compan-
ion plant, although you will have to be
careful not to crowd the heather, as they
brown out rather easily when covered by
neighbouring foliage.
A long season of bloom is preferred
here, so a few good choices would be
Leucanthemum Broadway Lights,
Coreopsis Zagreb, Hemerocallis Stella
DOro, Phygelius Purple Prince or Rud-
beckia Goldsturm.
As far as growing conditions are con-
cerned all summer heathers prefer part
(at least five hours) to full sun, acidic soil
and good drainage as Phytophthora or
root rot can be a problem in wet areas.

S
ome say its the worst
thing to pray for.
If you ask God for
patience, hell help you learn
it the hard way the
only way.
I heard about a
young father in a su-
permarket pushing a
shopping cart topped
off with a carrier and
his screaming baby
boy. He was repeating
softly, Keep calm,
Thomas. Dont get ex-
cited, Thomas. Dont
yell, Thomas.
A lady watched with
admiration and then
said, I must com-
mend your patience in
trying to quiet little Thomas.
To which he replied, Lady
Im Thomas.
How do we model and teach
patience to our children?
This month were looking at
how we can live out Gods kind
of love: Love is patient and
kind ... Love does not demand
its own way (1 Cor.13:4,5).
Patience is in short supply
in our day of instant access,
drive-through service, easy
credit, short-term commit-
ments, disposable marriages,
entitled teens, and spoiled
children.
Many parents think that
loving their kids means let-
ting them express themselves
freely, have what they want,
do what they want, and learn
for themselves.
My wife and I are enjoying
having our daughter, Carissa,
and son-in-law, Matt, and their
two kids live with us
while they build their
next house.
Carissa and Matt
are excellent parents,
but our grandkids are
normal, rambunctious
preschoolers.
Kaitlyn is 4, Zach is
2, and as cute as they
are, they could be the
next generation of
Stanley Cup rioters,
or worse, interna-
tional terrorists, if
we dont guide them
toward maturity.
If left unattended (yes, Ive
done this), our family room
can look like a war zone in a
matter of minutes.
One way my kids teach
their kids patience is through
delayed gratification: you can
have your fruit snack after
you clean up your toys, or go
to Chuck E. Cheeses when
you help mommy with the
laundry.
As they get older, the delays
can be longer: we can buy
those shoes you want after
youve weeded the garden, or
well pay half of your first used
car when youve saved up the
other half with a part-time job.
Kindness can be learned
through lessons in sharing.
Carissa used to divide one
pack of fruit snacks equally
between both kids, but now
she has Katie divide them
herself.
Sometimes, shell even ask
Zach to share with Katie, with
less predictable results.
On those rare occasions
when they give the other
sibling more, Carissa will
reinforce their kindness with
praise.
This subtle change has
transformed the way they
play, work, and eat with each
other and their preschool bud-
dies.
Finally, Carissa and Matt
model patience and kindness
with each other.
Values are caught, not just
taught.
We can make a difference
in the generations to come by
providing them with positive
examples to follow.
So go ahead and pray for pa-
tience, then watch for the op-
portunities to put your prayer
into practice.

NorthRidge Church.

THE NEWS
Afeldt, Franklin lead Team Canada juniors to wins in Surrey
Maple Ridges Jaycee Affeldt
and Larissa Franklin helped
lead the Canadian Womens Ju-
nior Softball team to a 5-0 record
at the Canadian Open Fastpitch
International Championships in
Surrey on Wednesday.
After winning four straight
games on the mercy rule to open
the tournament, the Canadian
juniors needed the full seven in-
nings to defeat the Washington
Lake Breeze by a score of 4-2.
Washington surprised Canada
by taking a quick 2-0 lead, but
the red and white responded
with three runs in the third in-
ning and one in the fifth and
held on for the victory.
After a quick first inning,
Washington opened the scoring
with two runs in the top of the
second on an RBI triple and two
errors.
Canada looked to even the
score in the bottom of the frame
thanks in part to a single by Af-
feldt. However, the Junior Na-
tional Team hit a pair of fly outs
on the infield to end the inning.
Canada was finally able to
push a few runs in to score in
the bottom of the third, taking a
3-2 lead.
Neither team was able to get
much going in the fourth, but
Canada was able to add an in-
surance run in the bottom of the
fifth on an RBI single by Carey-
Leigh Thomas.
Canada was able to hold on the
rest of the way to earn the tight
win.
Both Affeldt and Franklin
played a major role in a 12-0 win
for Team Canada over the Oka-
nagan Elite Gold 94.
Franklin hit a two-run single
against the Elite, before scoring
on a double steal. In the pitchers
circle, Affeldt was dominant,
throwing four innings without
allowing a hit, walking one and
striking out eight batters.
When not playing for the na-
tional squad, Franklin plays for
the White Rock Renegades 91.
Affeldt will be heading to Troy
University in Alabama to play
NCAA Division I softball in Sep-
tember.

D
avid Bol is the rst
person to tell you
that he is insane.
The Maple Ridge con-
struction worker and re-
cent father is preparing for
what many consider to be
the toughest foot race in
the world.
The Marathon des Sables
is a six day race that takes
runners across 254-km of
the Sahara Desert in Mo-
rocco, across some of the
most barren, inhospitable
landscapes on earth.
The heat will be scorch-
ing, with temperatures
nearing 50 C.
Experienced runners
train for years for the
race.
Bol, who began training
in January, has never run
a marathon before.
I saw a show on TV
about it, and they said it
was the toughest race in
world, so I said right there
that I want to do it, he
says.
My wife, my family,
they all think Im crazy.
Bol says he enjoys chal-
lenging himself, and he
wants the bragging rights
of completing the worlds
toughest race.
If the idea sounds a little
crazy, its not entirely out
of character for Bol.
Ive been naked bungy
jumping a few times, he
says.
Bol is currently alternat-
ing 20-km runs with hill
climbs up 227th Street on
his off days. He says his
training regimen is pro-
gressing on schedule, and
he should be ready for the
race in April 2012.
He hopes to be able to
run marathon distances
within a couple months.
The longest stage of the
race is 80-km long, so hell
have to do much more
than that.
Competitors are also
required to carry all food
and personal belongings
with them on the run.
My wife is really sup-
portive, but shes con-
cerned for my well-being,
says Bol. To her, doing
something like this would
be her worst nightmare.
The race can be a killer,
literally.
In 2007, two competitors
died on the race, and all
entrants must submit elec-
trocardiograms to prove
they are healthy enough
to compete.
Bol is writing about his
preparation on his blog.
He is also hoping to
raise money for the Af-
rican childrens charity
Facing Africa which helps
children who are the sur-
vivors of a disease called
Noma. These children are
often impoverished and
malnourished and after
this disease are left with
horrible facial disgure-
ments.
