WELCOME
It is a pleasure to welcome you today to a special event--the visit
to Furman University of Arnold Palmer, a distinguished professional golfer
and one of the finest young Ame ricans it has ever been my privilege to know.
As you follow Mr. Pa lme r, I hope you will view this beautiful golf
course as part of the tota l Furman--a Furman which strive s for excellence in
all of its endeavors. This is not a particularly easy course to play, as Mr.
Palme r will t e ll you. Neithe r is Furman's academic program easy, nor its
athletic or phYSical education program half-hearted. Furman attempts to
give its stude nts a well-rounded college program academically, physically,
spiritually, and socially.
We are proud of Furman's facilities, most of which are unsurpassed
in this area. In keeping with these facilities, we have a faculty of excep
tional strength and a student body eager to take advantage of the opportuni
ties offere d here. As you approach the 16th green, I hope you will look out
over the campus and realize that Furman is built for the total liberal arts
education of young men 3.nd women in a Christian environment. To this total
education we are entirely dedicated.
I hope you will enjoy your afternoon with us which has been made

HEYWARD SULLIVAN
Harry Heath is 27 years old and a native of Winchester,
Virginia. He graduated from Aiken High School in
Aiken, South Carolina, where he tu:-ned pro in 1959
and served as Assistant at the Highland Park Country
Club. Harry has also been Assistant at Quail Hol
low Country Club in Charlotte and at Meyers ParkCoun
try Club in that same city. Presently he is teaching
and playing assistant at the Greenville Country Club,
Greenville, South Carolina.
George Pruitt is a Greenvi lle native, graduating from
Parker High School in 1942 and Furman Un iversity in
1950. He is affili ated with the Johnson and Pruitt
Cotton Company of Greenville. The following are
some of his golf accomplishments: Green Valley Country
Club Championship, Lak-=side Country Club Champion
ship (Atlanta, Ga.L Paris Mountain Country Club
Championship, Greenville, S. C. Invitation
Championship, Optomist Club Championship and Runner
up to the State Amateur Championship.
Heyward Sull ivan is a Greenvil 'le native. He graduated
from Greenville Hi gh School where he was South
Carolina High School Golf Champion in 1955. Before
graduating from Furman University, Heyward distinguished
himself by being captain of the Golf team and by
winning the South Carolina Collegiate Golf Champion
ship in 1959, and the Southern Conference Go I f
Championship in that same year. While in the Air
Force, he represented that service in the Bing Crosby
Pro-Am Tournament at Monterey, California in 1962.
He is currently Greenville Country Club Champion.
Arnold Palmer said, II I want to win tournaments more than anything else in t he
world, II and he has done just that.
He began developing his well-known golf muscles at the age of three, when his
father, 'Deacon Palmer,' a professional himself, started his boy on the road to golf
fame. At the age of five Arnold was playing 18 holes with regulari ty. Everyone around
the Latrobe, Pennsylvania, Country Club knew Arnie Palmer, who often swung the c lub
so fiercely that the momentum would send him sprawling on the ground. Soon, however,
he would learn to control his power and put it to good use as part of one of the most
astonishing careers in golfing histolY.
Much has been written about this man who has risen to great fame like a meteor ,
has created an era named after him, and has an army of followers that trot after hi m
whether he wins or not. His attitude of attacking the course, his tremendous ability t o
charg1e from behind and his outstanding personal ity have made him on idol. Jerry Barber,
one of his fellow pros on the tour says: "He goes right for the throat of a course and
shakes it to death. II Again and again he has come through the field to win wit h a
seemingly impossibl e shot on the fi nal dread-shrouded hole a nd in t he process he has
astounded a nd elect rified the golfing world. Wherever he goes these days, golfers stare
at hi m with fixed expressions like swomis searching for secrets in a crystal ball. But
very few secrets are apparent in his manner or in his appeara nce. He is a very strong
man, 5'11 " and weights 180 pounds trained down. His hands are big, his arms and
shoulders are like those of a blacksmith. But he has a smoot h, poli shed look about him.
His bearing suggests that he is always in control of himself and his environment. Arnold's
ot her ventures in businesses connected wi th golf are diversified and numerous. Still, he
remai ns a 'regular' on the U. S. tournament scene. Beyond that, he has on many oc
casions in various corners of the world proven hi mself an exce ll ent ambassador of good
wi II for his country .

TI CKETS - All persons must show proper identification on course.
SH . 5H - SHU5 - Do not move or speak when a player is making a shot. The sudden buzz
of movie cameras , loud talking or other disturbing sounds may cost players valuable strokes.
HEELS - ladies should neve r wal k on the course with high heels and all spectators must
stay off the greens.
KEEP OUT - Its tough enough to play from a sand trap but its tougher still to dig a
bailout of a footprint . Walk around bushes and not through them.
T5K T5K - Be generous with your applause but save it until all golfers have completed
shots . Do not stampede to next green unt il all golfers have holed out.
v - FORMATION - When lining up to watch shots, at tee and through the fairway,
dress back to form a, V for better vision and safety.
ROPES - ROPES HAVE BEEN PLACED AROUND GREENS AND TEES FOR BETTER VISION
AND PROTECTION FOR YOU. OBEY MARSHALS AND ALWAYS REMAIN BACK OF ROPES.
REMEMBER - Human life and fair play are in your hands. Simply follow the golden
rule of treating others as you would like them to treat you.

Arnold Palmer's
million-dollar swing
THROUGHOUT the swing, Arnie's head remains steady. This
represents his second unyielding characteristic which, along
with the proper grip, keeps his game at razor-sharp edge. At
the top, his balance is maintained and the change in direction
of motion is handled compactly with the left hip perhaps mak
ing the initial move back to the ball. You will notice in frame
# 5 that the left hip and left knee have moved laterall y as the
hands seem to maintain their position above the shoulders from
there through frame #6. The shoulders continue to lag behind
the hips as the hands start their downward pull. Here you might
pay attention to the manner in which the right knee, never stiff,
starts to flex first toward the ball, then toward the line of fl ight
and the hands, moving fastest at impact, take the club into and
through the ball. The right elbow hugs the ri ght hip in frames
# 7 to 8 , keeping the club in its efficient plane, and the right
shoulder stays inside the line as the left arm leads. Frame # 9
also discloses the delayed wrist action and the power of centrif
ugal fon:e. The left side firms up and the right side is completely
released as the clubhead contacts the ball just before the bottom
of its are, taking a divot after the hit is made. The clubface is
square and is traveling in a straight li ne at impact, guided
throughout by. Arnie's "minimum of air space" grip. Then the
extended arm and the force of the swing start to pull his head
from its fixed position, the first movement noticed in his swing.
All concentration has remained on the execution of the shot.
