Course objectives: This introductory course will provide the students with basic understanding of the principles and concepts of accounting as well as their applicability and relevance in the business sector. On completion of this course the students will be able to: a. Outline the role and principles of financial accounting and reporting. b. Record, handle and summarize accounting data. c. Transaction Analysis; Double Entry Bookkeeping; Summary of Transactions; Financial Statements. The Account-Debits and Credits; Expansion of Basic Equation; Steps in the Recording Process-The Journal; The Ledger; The Trial BalanceLimitations of a Trial Balance; Locating Errors. Timing issues; Accrual vs. Cash Basis Accounting; Recognizing Revenues and Expenses; The Basics of Adjusting Entries; Types of Adjusting Entries- Adjusting Entries for Deferral; Adjusting Entries for Accruals. MANAGERIAL ACCOUNTING Definition of managerial accounting, Distinction between managerial accounting and financial accounting, importance of managerial accounting, managerial accounting techniques. Concept of cost, element of cost, cost classification, cost sheet and presentation of cost using cost sheet. The Basics of CVP analysis, Contribution Margin (CM); CM Ratio; Importance of CM, Break Even Analysis; CVP Relationships in Graphical Form. Instructional Methodology The objective of this course will be met by incorporating a variety of instructional methods. These methods include lecture, group activities, presentations, class quizzes, class exercises, and problem solving.

Examinations There will be 3 class tests bearing 15 marks each and both will be averaged for grading purpose. There will be only one mid-term examination. Failing to take mid-term exam will result in zero mark. Under extreme circumstances, like death of close relation, serious illness etc., make up exam can only be arranged. The exam dates and venue will be announced at least one week before. Assignment A group of three students will have to submit two assignments each carrying 5 marks and then they will be averaged. It is expected that each team member contribute an equal amount of work and number of hours to the assignment. Students can contact me if they face any problem or need any explanation or suggestion. Presentation: Prepare a 5-minute PowerPoint Presentation. Presentation will carry 8 marks. It is expected that each member participate in presentation. Grading Policy Grading policy follows the standard grading policy of DIU. However, adjustments might be made at the end of the semester if there is any justification for doing so. Attendance DIU attendance policy will be used. It is expected that each student attend all the classes. Students must assume full responsibility for any loss incurred due to absence. Plagiarism Zero tolerance level will be shown for any type of cheating or plagiarism. This will result in F grade. Cheating is the use of unauthorized resources and/or work of another person, but not limited to homework, tests, presentations and examinations. Unless specifically instructed otherwise, it is assumed that each student submits his/her work done by his/her own. Please Note the Following
