Discussion Program: Group Theme Information


Group Theme: 3. Environment (Climate Change) Facilitator: Ms. Risye Dwiyani (Indonesia, SSEAYP2004) Goal To comprehend how current daily life-style could contribute to rapid climate change and to raise awareness of the urgency of actions to make a change. On that basis, PYs will discuss on feasible action plans to develop an environmentally-friendly life-style in the society in order to prevent further rapid climate change. General Objectives PYs will be aware of the current climate change status and the urgency of actions against rapid climate change, and realize that they are one of the agent of change. PYs will comprehend how current human life style contributes significantly to climate change. PYs will develop their creativities and capacities to put their knowledge into actions and formulate common goal of actions regarding climate change issues by collaborating with people from different backgrounds. PYs will be encouraged to make a change on their habits towards the environment and enhance their willingness to disseminate what they have already learned to the surroundings.

Activities Objectives Group Discussion I (November 7; 10:00 - 12:45)


To be aware about the current status of climate change and the urgency of actions to combat rapid climate change. -

Activities
Knowledge sharing about current climate change status on earth and disastrous impacts in Japan and ASEAN countries. Discuss on the policies related to climate change, in international level and each country. Create the groups mind map and point out lessons learned based on the discussions. Share opinion about institutional visit in Japan. Play Crossroad Game about human life style and climate change, where PYs will discuss how to deal with dilemmatic situation in making decision regarding environmental issues in daily life Prepare a research project to be conducted onboard about the life style onboard which contributes to carbon emission. The research project will be called as Peek-a-Bit Project (Peek on PYs Habit Project).

Group Discussion II (November 8; 10:00 - 12:45)

To learn how humans are often faced by dilemma in making decision between living environmentallyfriendly and fulfilling their daily needs, and further find the possible deal to minimize the dilemma.

Group Discussion III (November 9; 10:00 - 12:45)

To realize how much PYs themselves and their surrounding communities have contributed to rapid climate change.

Share the result of PYs' Self-reflection Report about their contribution to rapid climate change. Share the views about current human life style in each country and how they contribute to rapid climate change.

Create the groups mind map and point out the lessons learned. Share and discuss about the current youth efforts world-wide to combat rapid climate change and develop environmentally-friendly society.

Group Discussion IV (November 10; 10:00 - 12:45)

To acknowledge what other youths have done to combat rapid climate change, effectiveness and challenges. To explore the resources owned by PYs for feasible actions to combat rapid climate change.

List up the lessons learned from current youth efforts (e.g. obstacles, strategies from best practices, sustainability).

Conduct SWOT analysis of PYs and SSEAYP networks to do action in combating rapid climate change. Explore PYs' ideas of feasible post-program small project to combat rapid climate change, to be conducted in one country as the model.

Group Discussion V (November 11; 10:00 - 12:45) Group Discussion VI (November 16; 14:15 17:00)

To formulate postprogram action plans which trigger continuous collaboration among PYs.

Finalize the concept of post-program small project. Determine the time line of the post-program projects plan, divisions, and develop the action plans. Form a system through internet (e.g. blog) to monitor the action plans and disseminate DG results after SSEAYP program.

To formulate immediate actions to make a real change in developing an environmentally-friendly society at least in SSEAYP community.

Share opinion about institutional visit in Malaysia. Share the result of Peek-a-Bit Project, discuss on how such habits might contribute to climate change. Based on Peek-a-Bit Project result, generate ideas on how to promote a more environmentally-friendly life style on board and prepare the action to be implemented in PYs daily activities or particular events on board the ship.

Pre-Program Assignments Assignment 1 (Individual Assignments) Prepare a study report in MS Word (appr. 900 words in total) which discusses the following points: a. Current climate change status on earth and the causes of rapid climate change. This part will be used as your basic knowledge for Group Discussion I and III. b. Your opinion about Kyoto Protocol and other international cooperation initiatives to combat rapid climate change. This part will be shared in Group Discussion I. c. Your opinion on rapid climate change, your hope of environmentally-friendly society, and concrete ideas on what you can do as youth to combat rapid climate change, at least in your own communities. This part will be shared in Group Discussion IV, V and VI.

Assignment 2 (Individual Assignments) Prepare a Self-reflection Report in MS Word, based on the following activities: a. Measure and record the garbage you produce each day for 3 days in a row. Identify the type of garbage (e.g. 10 pages of paper, toilet papers, 2 plastic bags, 1 battery). b. Identify the energy you use each day for 3 days in a row which may affect rapid climate change (e.g. Gasoline for 4 hours driving, computer for 8 hours, etc). c. Analyze and make comments on your data. Several questions to help with your analyses: Which activities contribute much and how significant it can contribute to climate change? Relate your data with previous studies you have through assignment 1. What will happen with the garbage/ energy if you don't change your habit in one year? What will happen if all citizens in your area do the same thing? What things have you improved in your daily lives in order to save the environment? What is your future motivation to reduce your own carbon emission? etc. d. Please use the following format to write the report.

Please note that we will not focus on judging whether you are an eco-friendly person or not, but we will focus on discussing how real the environmental problem is, analyze the data, and point out the lessons learned. The data will be compiled by Discussion Facilitator and shared during Group Discussion III. Several PYs with the most interesting/ inspiring analyses and comments will be chosen to briefly present their reports during Group Discussion III. Assignment 3 (Contingent Assignments) Collect the visual representations (pictures, graphs or charts along with brief explanation under each case and state the references) of the following items and arrange them in PowerPoint Presentation file: a. Disastrous impacts of rapid climate change in your country (3 cases). Briefly explain about the events and impacts. Each visual representation will be printed by the Discussion Facilitator to be used in Group Discussion I. b. Current human life style which contributes positively or negatively to climate change in your country (3 cases). Explain how they link to climate change. This assignment will be useful as your basic knowledge to be engaged in Group Discussion II and III. Each visual representation will be printed by the Discussion Facilitator to be used in Group Discussion III. c. Current youth efforts in your country to combat rapid climate change or to develop environmentally-friendly society (3 cases). Explain their effectiveness and challenges. This assignment will be useful as your basic knowledge to be engaged in Group Discussion IV. Each visual representation will be printed by the Discussion Facilitator to be used in Group Discussion IV. d. Any facts/ scientific findings related to climate change which you want people in the world to be aware of (1 case), e.g. related to impacts, energy consumption, climate change status, youth movements, etc. Indicate why you want to present the case. The cases from all contingents will be compiled by Discussion Facilitator and presented to enrich the discussions during any related Group Discussions.

Please note that you do not have to make a link between assignment 3a, 3b, 3c, and 3d, since they will be used in different Group Discussions. The usage of PowerPoint Presentation file aims only to compile visual representations and their brief explanations by contingent. Assignment 4 (Contingent Assignments) Bring: a. Data on policies related to climate change in your country, which you have studied beforehand. Please bring this data to the Group Discussion I for your reference. b. One-sided printed used A1/B1 papers or newspapers (5 sheets) and one-sided printed used A4 papers (15 sheets). In our Group Discussions, we will try to minimize the usage of new papers during the discussion. Please hand those papers to Discussion Facilitator when we start Group Discussion I.
