you about each success so that you can click the DONATE button to pay. In the Summer2011 newsletter, read about the work of each program. Also in the Summer2011 newsletter, read the ADVOCACY issues before the city council, NC Legislature, and Congress. Review the articles below about the proposed legislation to limit local government authority to do periodic inspections such as RUCO and call your representatives in the North Carolina House to tell them we need effective policies to prevent substandard housing. RUCO, Greensboros Rental Unit Certificate of Occupancy ordinance, requires that all rental housing pass inspection before being rented. Despite dramatic success in preventing housing from becoming substandard, the current RUCO policies would be eliminated through proposed state legislation. Read RUCONews&RecordEditorials. Read the research that Dr.Chenoweth published in the American Journal of Public Health about the economic cost of NC childrens health care related to substandard housing. And look up your legislators on http://www.ncga.state.nc.us/GIS/Representation/Representation.html to call today about S. 683. ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Planning to repair or paint a home built before 1978? Because many older homes have lead paint under the newer layers of paint, North Carolina has a new Renovation, Remodeling, and Painting Rule (RRP) that went into effect January 1, 2010. The basic requirements are 1) Warn occupants by giving the booklet Renovate Right (which you can download renovaterightbrochure) and posting signs to keep people out of the work area. 2) Contain the work area to keep dust from spreading in the home and surrounding neighborhood. 3) Dont use machine sanders, heat guns, or torches. 4) Safely store and transport waste from the work area. 5) Clean the work area until no dust or residue remains. Workers must be certified to do this work in pre-1978 homes and child-occupied facilities. To get certification training, visit http://www.epi.state.nc.us/epi/asbestos/healthaz.html for a list of approved training providers.
