Background
Traditionalbiomasssourceslikefuelwood, agroresidues and animal wastes are the main energy source of more than 85% rural households in Nepal. This has led to a situation of environmental unsustainability with the average annual rate of deforestation as 1.7%, considered tobehighforthefragilehillsecosystemofNepal.Besides, in the rural areas the traditional biomass fuel is burnt in the rudimentary stoves, with poor combustion due to which exposure to indoor air pollution (IAP) has been a serious health risk for women and children as cooking generally takes place inside the houses with poor ventilation.

Currentprojectisanattempttoaddressabovementioned issues. With prefinancing support from Egluro Limited basedinUKtheprojectisunderimplementationbyCentre forRuralTechnology,Nepal(CRT/N)basedinKathmandu under the general guidance of the Project Design Document (PDD) approved by Designated National Authority(MinistryofEnvironment)ofNepal, validatedby DNV and registered by UNFCCC. The project will disseminate 22,920 efficient stoves in central Terai districts during first three years and then again support theusersonetimetoreplacethestoves.

Objective of the Project

It is expected that the project will contribute towards checking deforestation and degradation of forests in the Terai region through widerandvoluntaryparticipationof the people in adopting fuel efficient stoves. This will also contribute to improvement in quality of lives of the targeted people through reductionofdrudgery, timeandmoneyspentonfuelwood collection and through improvement of indoor environment. Globally, the project will contribute by reducingemissionofGHGintheatmosphere.

Project Area
The project districts are: Parsa, Bara, Rautahat, Sarlahi, Mahottari, and Dhanusa. The project area covers 12 Village Development Committees (VDCs) in Rautahat districtand20VDCseachinother5districts.

Expected Social and Environmental Benefits

Following benefits are expected on completion of the project: About 450 stove promoters are trained who are earningincomefromICSconstruction. The income level of potters involved in production ofceramicchamberandchimneyhasimproved. Indoor air quality of the user households has improvedsignificantly. The consumption of fuelwood has reduced in the rangeof3050%fromthebaselineconsumptionof 2.7tonnesperhouseholdperyear. The project has reduced emission of an estimated 19,899metrictonnesCO2equivalentperyear. This project, being the first CDM project successfullylaunchedbyanNGOwithprefinancing support from a party in Annex 1 country, is expectedtoboostinterestofothercapableNGOsto undertakenewCDMprojectsonrenewableenergy.

Technical Features of the Stoves

TheprojectwillpromoteChitawanModelfixedtypemud stoves and rocket stoves. The mud stoves have ceramic combustionchamberandbetterinsulationarounditalong with standard components like baffle and chimney. The ceramic combustion chamber provides consistent design and dimension improving efficiency and better heat transfer to the cooking pots thus reducing the overall cookingtimeandconsumptionoffuelwood.Furthermore, theprojectwillalsopromoteamud/metalrocketstoveto suit the local cooking needs and preferences of different ethnic groups and communities in the project districts. Both these stoves models serve all the cooking purposes likethetraditionalstoves.

Approach and Activities

The project is implemented through local partner organisations (2 in each district) and trained local stove promoters. Thus, the project has given thrust to capacity building of local stakeholders along with awareness building among the rural people.
