Introduction

1.1

Meaning of Open Source Software Open-source software (OSS) is computer software that is available in source code form

for which the source code and certain other rights normally reserved for copyright holders are provided under a software license that permits users to study, change, improve and at times also to distribute the software. Some open source licenses meet the requirements of the Open Source Definition. Some open source software is available within the public domain.

1.2

Meaning of Hardware Hardware is the physical parts of the computer, e.g. The processor, memory chips and

hard drive. Software is the programs and routines which run on the hardware, and firmware is software which is permanently programmed into Read Only Memory, such as the BIOS. The term hardware mean the common term which is used to denote physical parts of any technological equipment.

1.3

Meaning of Software Instructions that tell a computer what to do. Software is the entire set of programs,

procedures, and routines associated with the operation of a computer system, including the operating system. The term differentiates these features from hardware, the physical components of a computer system. Two main types of software are system software, which controls a computer's internal functioning, and application software, which directs the computer to execute commands that solve practical problems. A third category is network software, which coordinates communication between computers linked in a network. Software is written by programmers in any number of programming languages. This information, the source code, must then be translated by means of a compiler into machine language, which the computer can understand and act on.

The Latest Open Source Operating System (OS)

2.1

Meaning of open source OS An open source (OS) operating system is a set of programs that schedule tasks, allocates

storage and presents a default interface to the user between applications. But this OS is free, user have the right to use, modify and redistribute the software for better interoperability.

2.2

Examples of open source OS 1. MICROSOFT WINDOWS

Example of latest open source OS is Microsoft Windows is a series of operating systems produced by Microsoft. Microsoft first introduced an operating environment named Windows on November 20, 1985 as an add-on to MS-DOS in response to the growing interest in graphical user interfaces (GUIs). Microsoft Windows came to dominate the world's personal computer market, overtaking Mac OS, which had been introduced in 1984. As of October 2009, Windows had approximately 90% of the market share of the client operating systems for usage on the Internet. Latest stable release is February 22, 2011.

2. MINIX 3

The second example of open source operating system is MINIX 3 is a project to create a small, highly reliable and functional Unix-like operating system. It is published under the BSD license. The main goal of the project is for the system to be fault-tolerant by detecting and repairing its own faults on the fly, without user intervention. The main uses of the operating system are envisaged to be embedded systems as well as the education sector, such as universities or the XO-1 laptop. MINIX 3 currently supports IA-32 architecture PC compatible systems. It is also possible to run MINIX under emulators or virtual machines, such as Bochs, VMware Workstation,[4] Microsoft Virtual PC, and QEMU. Ports to the PowerPC and ARM architectures (Intel XScale) are in development. The latest stable release is June 8, 2011. This operation system Unix-like.

5.0 5.1 Meaning of pervasive computing

Pervasive Computing

Pervasive computing is refers to the use of computers in everyday life, including PDAs, smartphones and other mobile devices. It also refers to computers contained in commonplace objects such as cars and appliances and implies that people are unaware of their presence. One of the Holy Grails of this environment is that all these devices communicate with each other over wireless networks without any interaction required by the users. The two examples of the pervasive computing are Nokia E51 and Nokia E55.

Conclusion

Open Source can be used by anyone and because it has no copyright claims, so users are free to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified forms. Pervasive Computing is to make our lives easier because we can interact with computers. Besides that, we can easily give the computer commands and the computer will grant your wish. Today, most preschools and middle-class homes have a computer. Started at one, but today ten-month-old infants sit at the computer with mum or dad as part of the interactive parent-child programme at school.
