Welcome

These are important times.

The arts in Canada are a necessity towards the continued development of our cultural ecology. This is a reality that many of you already know. You are here at this Festival because you recognize this immense societal value. This recognition is a thing of great beauty, but my friends, it is not enough. More recently, the SummerWorks culture found itself threatened with a loss of funding. It was you, our patrons, who stepped up and chose not to accept this. You recognized our value, and we received the kind of support that has bolstered, moved and overwhelmed our spirit. This is a remarkable feat. And I say again: These are important times. We must continue to find the courage to speak loudly and with intelligence to the question of necessity, of value, of identity. Our cultural ecology is our identity. Our identity is everything. Our future and our childrens future rely on our commitment to a healthy cultural ecology. It gives us the freedom to form identity based on our desires, not our constraints. Art helps us recognize that we always have the freedom to choose. The freedom we, as Canadians have, makes this one of the greatest places in the world to live. We must continue to protect this freedom. Its with this freedom that SummerWorks will continue to strive as Torontos most daring, provocative and inquisitive theatre and arts Festival. Thank-you for having the courage to use your voice, sending a clear message of support and pride to all Canadian citizens, and to the world. It is a beautiful affirmation that we stand together in solidarity during a time when our artistic voice is more crucial than ever before. It is in this spirit that I welcome you, with a full heart, to the 2011 SummerWorks Theatre Festival.

About SummerWorks
History In 1991, five friends Benj Gallander, Greg Holmgren, Carol Pauker, Rob Sherwood and Ben Stadelmann came together to put on the first SummerWorks Theatre Festival. The decision to mount a new fringestyle festival was a response to what was seen as a growing, underrepresented small theatre community. From 2000 to 2004, under the direction of Franco Boni, the Festival made significant changes through a gradual transition from a lottery system to a fully juried Festival. In 2005, the Festival came under the leadership of Artistic Producers Keira Loughran and Kimahli Powell, who together launched the Canadian Pavilion (National Series). In 2007, Keira took on full responsibility for the Festival as sole Artistic Producer. In January 2008, Michael Rubenfeld became the Artistic Producer of the Festival, bringing with him a love for theatre and music, and his desire to explore art as a tool for both community and cultural evolution. As the largest juried festival in Canada featuring predominantly New Canadian plays, SummerWorks looks to uniquely reflect Toronto and Canadas zeitgeist. Produced and engineered by Leon Taheny (Final Fantasy, Ohbijou) the songs range from stripped down rootsy folk to bright sunshine pop to dark proggy, dance rhythms. Saturday, August 6 lioneSS Lioness came together, almost in secret, in Toronto in the winter of 2007, when Jeff Scheven and Ronnie Morris, the rhythm section behind the dark, stomping disco pulses of controller.controller, hooked up with Vanessa Fischer of soul-punk quartet No Dynamics. Honing their craft by playing low-key after-hours sets in sweaty, off-the-radar locales throughout the city, the band nonetheless generated a remarkable undercurrent of buzz in the following months, leading to support slots with the likes of !!!, Hercules and the Love Affair, You Say Party!, K-OS, Killing Joke and The Cult. Lioness is set to head into the studio this summer to record their much anticipated full length record to be released later in the year. BonJAy Drawing their name from spice island slang for Good God!, Bonjay were born in a basement at Ottawas legendary Disorganised parties. What began as a simple crowd pleasing party lark has developed into a serious commitment to songwriting and production, including remixes for labels like Mad Decent, Ninjatune and Ghetto Arc (XL Recordings). With Alanna on the mic and Pho on beats & effects, their live performance is a high-energy sound system of bass and soul. Dancehall innovation, indie sentiments, and R&B hooks these are the sounds booming out from the jeeps, towers and headphones of young Toronto, and Bonjay makes them their own.

Wednesday, August 10 HouSe leAGue House League is a Toronto supergroup featuring members of beloved Toronto bands Evening Hymns, Forest City Lovers, Matters (ex. Durbervilles) and The Magic... House League is Torontos Traveling Wilburys. Curated specifically for SummerWorks 2011, House League is One Night Only. GreAT BloomerS Great Bloomers mix indie, roots and classic pop with the guts to do it honestly. They are one of Torontos most inspiring young bands, a group that plays with the spirit and humour of seasoned veterans. They are a band built on strong friendships that play out in tightly crafted, genre crossing rock. Revealing the melodic instincts of The Elephant 6 collective and Brian Wilson, twists of peppy honky-tonk build upon an effervescent indie-rock palette, dabbling in blissed-out UK pop and the psych-country leanings of the Brian Jonestown Massacre. They jump seamlessly from genre to genre, incorporating into their folk-rock core the playful stride of honky-tonk piano, the warm rootsy colour of lap steel or harmonium, the laid back sensibilities of 90s slacker rock and a serious dose of Phil Spector pop sheen. Great Bloomers employ both the epic arrangements of a Queen-esque masterpiece and the simplicity of a Neil Young ballad, songs equally laden with infectious melodies, surprising depth and songs that shine out with nostalgia and idealism.

Thursday, August 11 Jennifer cASTle After lending her unmistakable voice to a diverse list of recordings including The Constantines Kensington Heights, Fucked Ups Year of the Pig and David Comes to Life, as well as albums by Ryan Driver, Eric Chenaux, Doug Paisley and Wooly Leaves Jennifer Castle now brings her timeless take on folk music to the world under her own name for the first time with Castlemusic. One of Canadas best kept secrets, Castle has managed to stay low-key and grounded in Toronto, Ontario, quietly crafting songs that capture the wonder of those impossible visions. Bruce PeninSulA Since forming in 2006, Bruce Peninsulas rolling soul revue has left countless clubs shaken and all critics convinced. Colliding a large female choir into an imaginative four-piece rock band, the music is a strange mix of American gospel, African folk and modern progressive rock, resulting in a style often praised for its genre-less qualities. Bruce Peninsula are uninterested in walking well-trodden paths and simply believe in singing from the gut and letting the rhythm lead. The band is gearing up to release their sophomore LP, entitled Open Flames, in the Fall of 2011. Friday, August 12 ruBy coAST Ruby Coast consists of four small town friends, Justice McLellan, Keith Bradford, Corey Marshall and Bryan Chaulk, whose brand of high-energy, sparkling indie-pop has taken them far beyond the confines of their suburban Aurora, ON in a relatively short span of time. Ruby Coast first picked up their instruments together in late 2006, and has wowed crowds across the continent ever since with their unique formula of contagious pop perfection and boisterous blend of mod-rock and spastic yelps. Since releasing their (now sold out) debut EP, Projectable Collections in 2008, produced by Dave Monks of Tokyo Police Club, theyve taken their van across plenty of previously unmarked territory (at least unmarked to them). The band toured across Canada and the U.S. with the likes of Passion Pit, Tokyo Police Club, and Ra Ra Riot, as well as shared stages with Canadas finest talent: Stars, Born Ruffians, Plants and Animals, and Islands amongst others. After hiding away as songwriting machines for much of 2009, Ruby Coast emerged from the studio with their highly anticipated debut album, Whatever This Is, in tow, produced by dream duo Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade) and Brian Paulson (Dinosaur Jr, Slint, Wilco). mirAcle forTreSS Miracle Fortress is the cognomen for Montreal-based musician and producer Graham Van Pelt. Also a member of Think About Life, as Miracle Fortress, Graham records and performs a wide array of musical soundscapes, hooks and beats. His 2007 debut, Five Roses, received widespread critical praise and his sophmore release Was I The Wave? has just been nominated for a Polaris Prize for Best Album in Canada 2011.

Saturday, August 13 PoWerS Sometime last spring, members of local Toronto stalwarts The Ghost is Dancing decided to rip it up and start again. Laying to rest their orchestral-indie leanings, the group re-emerged (sans one member) in September as a stripped-down electro-shoegaze outfit called Powers. Their new sound relies on a loud, in your-face mix of delay-heavy vocals, guitar, lots of samples and synths, and both programmed and live beats. The layered and immediately catchy result sometimes sounds like a dancier version of The Jesus and Mary Chain. After only a handful of well-attended shows, Powers look poised to leapfrog over the impressive achievements of their old band. Green Go From the basement house parties of arts-drenched town Guelph, Ontario comes a unique 10-handed mash-up of synths, drums, bass and guitar. Green Go is a girl/boy-fronted machine that runs on the fuel that is hot, sweaty dancing. The band is presently in studio, recording the follow-up to their smash debut Borders. Expect new tunes sooner than you can say Dont Hold Your Breath/Dance To Your Death/Forget All the Rest.
