ABSTARCT In typical power plant , for Boiler we have auxiliary equipments like ID , PA and FD Fans whose s power consumption is considerably high. Power saved is power generated hence there is thrust to reduce auxiliary power consumption . Usage of advance techniques like Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) will help in proper design of flow systems and can help in reducing the power consumption. The paper describes a typical sequence modeling and performance enhancement of 210 MW Forced Draft(FD) Fan using ANSYS CFX tool. CFX tool was chosen because it is good for grid generation for the optimization of turbo machinery blade shapes as Fig.1 like FD Fan. The components of FD fan like Suction Chamber ,blade ,Outlet Guide Vane (OGV) , Diffuser were modeled and meshed with good grid quality using ICEM CFD and turbo grid. Flow patterns were simulated and studied using the tool and the effect of profile, staggering of profile, camber , incidence angle etc on the aerodynamic performance of FD fan. The parameters like mass flow , pressure, power and efficiency was studied with the existing blade profile design as shown in Fig2. Iteratively the parameters like blade profile , staggering of blade , incidence angle etc were optimized with the interaction between CFD algorithms and turbo machinery expertise database to enhance the performance and reduce the power consumption. In this work results indicated that 5% efficiency increase and in turn the auxiliary power consumption of FD fan will be reduced by only replacing the optimized blade. In the current competitive scenario, saving power on auxiliary equipment leads to plant efficiency improvement and fuel saving.
