Merge talks advance
By MELISSA DIPENTO
The Cherry Hill Sun
Its been about a year since offi-
cials from both Cherry Hill and
Merchantville, along with state
Sen. Jim Beach, met to talk about
the possibility of a merger be-
tween the two municipalities.
A merger would mean com-
bined government services and
schooling for the 70,000plus resi-
dents in Cherry Hill and 3,800
borough residents.
At that point, both governing
entities were interested in taking
a deeper look at what consolida-
tion would mean for each munici-
pality.
Residents in Merchantville
signed petitions supporting a con-
solidation study.
Mayor Frank North appointed
a commission, he said, of quali-
fied individuals, including one
school board member, three for-
mer mayors and a planning board
member.
He said his group was ready to
make their application to the
state Department of Community
Affairs last summer, but council
voted to rescind the resolution to
study a merger in unison with
Cherry Hill, when the township
had not come up with its own
commission to study consolida-
tion.
Cherry Hill Township
spokesman Dan Keashen said, at
that time, Cherry Hill had not yet
created a formal committee to
look into the matter, but was in-
terested in doing so.
The merger did not move for-
ward previously because the two
municipalities arrived at the con-
clusion to study a potential merge
by different means.
Then in May, Gov. Christie
added his signature to a law (A-
3587) that clarifies a New Jersey
municipalitys ability to study
consolidation, essentially allow-
ing two entities to arrive at the
agreement to study a merger in
whichever way they see fit.
Assembly Democrats Lou
Greenwald, Pam Lampitt, Connie
Wagner and Valerie Vainieri Hut-
tle sponsored the bill to ease mu-
nicipal consolidation after the
state rejected a merger study by
Merchantville and Cherry Hill.
On June 13, Merchantville
passed resolution R11-83 to sup-
port a grassroots group, Mer-
chantville Connecting to the Fu-
ture, to participate in the consoli-
dation study if it is done at no
cost to the borough.
The group, led by council mem-
ber Anthony Perno, also includes
residents Kathy Birmingham,
Rosemari Hicks, Richard James,
George Wilkinson and alternate
Dan Fiedler, borough clerk
Denise Brouse said.
North said he had hoped to see
a different group representing
Merchantville, one with more
overall knowledge of how govern-
ment works.
Theyve never been on council
and they are not familiar with
things like debt service and tax
rates, North said.
Perno said the group he heads
up is ready and willing to look
into consolidation.
What is the financial impact
of merging? Theres two ways to
approach this. To raise taxes or
cut services, Perno said. We
want to look at the savings. Is it
enough savings or not enough to
lose the town?
North said he feels Mer-
chantville residents may be most
concerned with what schools
their children will go to.
The borough has one K-8
school and has a sending/receiv-
ing agreement with Pennsauken
High School.
North previously said many
parents choose to send their stu-
dents to regional private schools

Longtime restaurant owner celebrated
By SEAN PATRICK MURPHY
The Cherry Hill Sun
Larger than life.
That, according to Nick Mour-
tos, is how his father will be re-
membered.
There was a life celebration
last week for Chris Mourtos at his
business, the Coastline Bar and
Grill in Cherry Hill, which was
attended by dozens of people.
Chris died on June 6 from lung
cancer.
Hes going to be remembered
as somebody who was larger than
life, Nick, 29, said. From the
way he dressed to the way he
talked to the way he voiced his
opinions and to the way he
showed his enormous, generous
heart to the community and any-
body who needed anything.
Chris owned the Coastline for
33 years.
Anything he did he worked
hard at it, Nick said of his father,
who came from Greece with noth-
ing. He is the embodiment of the
American Dream.
Nick also said that, despite his
success, his father never forgot
where he came from.
He said Chris was completely
committed to giving back to the
community and helping those
who were less fortunate.
Until the day he died, that is
something he believed in whole
heartedly, Nick said, noting his
dad used the Coastline as a vehi-
cle to help, whether it be the Cam-
den County Bar Association or
fund raisers for police officers,
fire fighters, and military person-
nel.
He said the family is commit-
ted to continuing Mourtos good
works.
Nicks mother, Dawn Mourtos,
will now run the restaurant. She
has been involved with it since it
opened.
She is more than capable of
stepping in and taking over, pick-
ing up where my dad left off,
Nick said. We all have faith in
her and we all know she can do
it.
Dawn, who was married to
Chris for more than 30 years, has
lived in Medford for the last 15
years.
It was incredible, she said of
the celebration. Weve got in-
credible customers.
Dawn said she plans to stay the
course at the Coastline.
Entertainment at the event was
provided by the trio Coastline All-

9/11 memorial tonight
To mark the 10th anniversary
of the terrorist attacks of Sept.
11, 2001, the township is partner-
ing with the Cherry Hill Fire and
Police departments to erect a spe-
cial, permanent memorial out-
side of the Fire Administration
Building on Marlkress Road.
The memorial, designed by a
Cherry Hill firefighter, features
two granite towers set in a Penta-
gon-shaped base. The towers will
be connected by a piece of I-Beam
from the World Trade Centers
north tower. The township hopes
to turn the site into a quiet place
of remembrance and reflection
for the entire community.
In order to make this idea a re-
ality in time for the anniversary
this fall, the township is raising
funds from within our communi-
ty. One way to support the project
is to make a direct donation at
www.CherryHillFire.org/mem
orial.asp.
In addition, there is a special
fund raising event planned.
The event will be held tonight
at P.J. Whelihans, 1854 Route 70,
from 6 to 9 p.m.Admission is $10.
Patrons will have access to a num-
ber of specials, including free
wings and fries from 7 to 9 p.m. A
percentage of all ticket, food sales
and specials will be donated to
the 9/11 Memorial. Tickets are
available at the door. If you have

event or donating to the 9/11 Me-
morial fund, feel free to contact

fice at 488-7878 or Megan Brown

Mayor Bernie Platt had glow-
ing words of praise for Chris.
Ive never met a more gener-
ous guy in the world, Platt said.
Chris was the kind of guy who
would give you the shirt off his
back.
He said Chris generosity
helped the Coastline to thrive.
Platt also mentioned the schol-
arship fund in Mourtos name
that was recently created by the
family.
Thats something thats in per-
petuity and will be something
beautiful, he said.
Platt also said the tremendous
turnout at the life celebration is
indicative of the kind of person
Chris was.
I think this just shows the es-
teem that he was held in, Platt
said. This is just a small, small
portion of the people that he
helped.
He also said many of Chris
generous acts have gone unno-
ticed.
Antigone Mourtos, Chris
niece, said she was heartbro-
ken when she found out Chris
had cancer. She echoed many oth-
ers by saying her uncle was gen-
erous, full of life, and had a
strong work ethic.
Hes going to be missed by
everybody, Antigone said.
Harry Starkman, CPA, repre-
sented Chris since day one at
the Coastline and worked with
Chris father 45 years ago.
So Ive been in the family all
that time, Starkman said.
Chris was a give-all type of
person, he said. If he believed
in a cause there was nothing to
stop him.
He would even sacrifice his
time at his business to help out a
person or a cause, Starkman said.
He was a tremendous busi-
nessman, Starkman said. In my
opinion no one could operate this
type of business better than
him.
Starkman also said Chris will
be missed.
I believe he was a friend to
whomever he met, he said.
A scholarship fund has been es-
tablished in Chris name at
Shawnee High School. The pur-
pose of this scholarship is to help
children who are in need, which
was a cause that was so close to
Chris heart.

tinuing Chris dedication to giv-
ing back, please make tax-de-

This is all being driven by the
schools, North said. I support a
study, I dont support our study
group.
North said he had previously
suggested to Cherry Hill Town-
ship officials that Merchantville
could take all of the Cherry Hill
K-6 students west of Rt. 38 to the
elementary school in the bor-
ough, all of the boroughs seventh
and eighth grade students could
attend Cherry Hill junior high
schools and borough high school-
ers could choose between Cherry
Hill East and West.
He also said the township could
take over the current borough
school building.
At the July 11 borough meet-
ing, Brouse said a few council
members questioned the resolu-
tion passed at the previous
months meeting and expressed
interest in holding a special meet-
ing before the next regular meet-
ing in August to further clarify
and discuss the grassroots group
that is interested in studying the
merger. Brouse said no action
was taken and the June 13 resolu-
tion still stands.
Meanwhile, Cherry Hill Mayor
Bernie Platt also appointed a
committee recently, which he will
head up.
Roger Dennis, dean of Drexel
University Law, Tom Yarnall, a
member of the Cherry Hill re-
form committee, a civic action
group, board of education presi-
dent Seth Klukoff and township
business liaison Natalie Barney
will also participate on Cherry
Hills commission, Keashen said.
The mayor has been very defi-
nite about this objective in study-
ing consolidation and he wanted
to do it, Keashen said.
On Monday, residents and offi-
cials from both municipalities, as
well as DCA officials were expect-
ed to attend the first public hear-
ing in Cherry Hill to get the
process started and to give resi-
dents the opportunity to answer
questions. Keashen said three
public hearings are mandated by
the DCA.

EDITORIAL
Sometimes its easy to forget,
amidst all the traffic and conges-
tion we hear and see every day,
that right here in our own back-
yard lay a wealth of natural re-
sources just waiting to be ex-
plored.
Its a fact of which Ive been
reminded time and again this
summer, as Cherry Hills exten-
sive system of walking and na-
ture trails have been pushed to
the forefront of our collective at-
tention.
In June, my office received ex-
citing news out of the U.S. De-
partment of the Interior: Our
two largest trail systems those
located at the historic Barclay
and Croft Farm sites had re-
ceived a prestigious designation
from the federal agency.
Both were selected into the
federal governments National
Recreation Trails program the
two lone New Jersey trail net-
works to receive the distinction
in 2011, and two of just 41 sites
nationwide to be given the title
this year.
This was remarkable news for
the entire Cherry Hill communi-
ty and particularly for those in-
volved with the Cherry Hill En-
vironmental Advisory Commit-
tee and Lew Gorman, the
groups tireless and devoted
leader, who has spent the last
several years working hard to
beautify and cultivate these
paths for all of Cherry Hill to
enjoy.
In fact, Lews efforts and our
trails were highlighted earlier
this month in an article:
http://articles.philly.com/2011-
07-06/news/29743193_1_trail-
marks-2-mile-trail-national-
trails-system.
These trails provide a multi-
tude of benefits for our commu-
nity like the ability to connect
our residents with nature and
expand both the recreational
and educational opportunities
available to people of all ages.
And with a little bit of TLC, each
area has developed beautifully,
forming a lush landscape that is
home to things like butterflies,
bees, bunnies and even, Im told,
a family of red-tailed hawks at
Croft Farm.
As Mayor of this township,
Im incredibly pleased and proud
of the progress weve made in
improving and promoting these
hidden gems in our community.
Some of the highlights of
these two trail systems:
n Barclay Farm: Located just
off Barclay Lane, is an intercon-
nected system of three paths
that cover about three-quarters
of a mile on the 18th century
farmstead, which is located on
the National Register of Historic
Places.
The final stop on the Cooper
River Historic Trail, this partic-
ular trail network includes a
handicapped-accessible branch
that features a stone surface; a
hiking trail that passes through
mature forest along the Cooper
Rivers north branch; and a na-
ture trail that features 10 inter-
pretive stations and runs along
the Cooper River, a pond, and
wetland.
n Croft Farm: Once a working
mill and farm and a stop on the
Underground Railroad, this site
has played an important role in
the growth of southern New Jer-
sey for more than 300 years. The
farm itself is on both the New
Jersey and National Registers of
Historic Places; the network of
six trails covers 1.45 miles and
winds through different natural
habitats including meadows,
scrub-shrub, early successional
forest, and mature forest. Croft
Farm Trails are promoted at
yearly events to connect people
with nature, increase support
for Open Space lands, and to
highlight outdoor recreational
opportunities in the community.
To celebrate this exciting des-
ignation and participate in the
American Hiking Societys Na-
tional Trails Day, the Township,
CHEAC and Sustainable Cherry
Hill are planning a very special,
free event from 3 to 5 p.m. Sun-
day, July 31, at Croft Farm.
CHEAC members will provide
guided tours of the Croft Trails;
we will have hands-on animal
demonstrations planned by the
Cedar Run Wildlife Refuge; and
visitors can view a special pres-
entation on the existing trails
plan and our vision for the fu-
ture.
In this age of video games and
television, it is critical that com-
munities like ours preserve
areas in which our children can
play, explore and learn while liv-
ing a healthier and more active
lifestyle.
It is my hope that this event
and others we hope to plan in the
future will give us the chance to
celebrate and promote these spe-
cial areas far and wide.
For more information on the
Trails Program or the July 31
celebration, contact the Depart-
ment of Parks and Recreation at

MAYORS MESSAGE
Still losing
But its still time to celebrate?
T
his must be an example of the new normal when it
comes to casinos in New Jersey.
Atlantic City casinos saw their revenues fall 3.7 percent in
June. The news was hailed by
some as a victory of sorts for
the industry since that was the
best showing since February,
when they saw revenue drop 1.4
percent.
Lets use gambling parlance
to translate: Hey, my slot ma-
chine stopped only one spot away from the jackpot! Or, that
horse I bet on to win came in a strong second!
You lose.
The casinos have been bleeding money. They still are bleed-
ing money. Only not as much. But it still stinks.
When it comes to the gambling race, New Jersey is way be-
hind, despite being given a huge head start. No sports betting.
Marketing efforts from the state/Atlantic City/the
casinos/some combination thereof are coordinated with all of
the precision and style of a kindergarten class first fire drill.
Nobody saw a threat from casinos popping up in neighboring
states: Dont worry about them. Those busloads of people
dont mind the extra two-hour drive. We have an ocean.
AC isnt dead, but it wont survive without dramatic changes:
A push to get sports gambling (which the state is trying to do,
but most likely wont succeed); coordinated marketing efforts;
cheaper food and hotels; and a general, overall effort to make
the place a destination point.
Vegas is Vegas for all of those reasons, and probably a few
more. And while that city has its problems housing bubble-
burst being No. 1 people still fly from all over the country to
see Vegas, bypassing their local gambling joints to visit.
Until AC casinos get their act together, no one should be par-
tying on the boardwalk because the bad news isnt as bad.
A good bet?
Do you visit Atlantic City
casinos as often as you did
in the past, or do you visit
ones closer to home? Visit
www.cherryhillsun.com to
share your thoughts.

LOCATION!
Leapin Lizards! Local families
can now experience the worlds
best-loved musical as Mainstage
Center for the Arts presents
Annie, Jr., sponsored by Benefi-
cial Bank. You can bet your bot-
tom dollar that kids from 3 to 93
will enjoy this production, which
runs July 27-29 at Camden County
Colleges Dennis Flyer Theatre.
This junior version of Annie is
chock full of well-known songs
from the Tony-award winning
Broadway version including: To-
morrow, Hard Knock Life,
Easy Street, and NYC.
Annie, Jr. is directed by Caitlin
Weaver of Cherry Hill. In addi-
tion to the lead characters, the
production features a cast of
nearly 80 sixth through 12th
graders whose singing and danc-
ing are sure to delight.
Annie, Jr. tells the story of a
spunky Depression-era orphan,
Annie, determined to find her
parents, who abandoned her
years ago on the doorstep of a
New York City orphanage.
The orphanage is run by the
cruel, heartless Miss Hannigan.
In adventure after adventure,
Annie foils Miss Hannigans evil
plans, befriends President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt, and
finds a new family and home with
billionaire Oliver (Daddy) War-
bucks, his personal secretary
Grace Farrell and a lovable mutt
named Sandy.
Audiences can take in Annies
adventures on Wednesday, July 27
7:30 p.m., Thursday and Friday,
July 28 and 29, 10:30 a.m. in the
newly-renovated, fully accessible
Dennis Flyer Theatre, Lincoln
Hall, Camden County College,
Blackwood.
The Thursday morning show
features sign interpretation. The
Friday morning performance is
part of MCAs Family Fun Fri-
days, where for a nominal fee,
children can make an Annie, Jr.
themed craft project from 9:30
a.m. to 10:20 a.m.
Following this performance,
the audience may meet cast mem-
bers in the courtyard on the left
side of Lincoln Hall. In addition,
at all Annie, Jr. performances,
Mainstage is collecting donations
for Covenant House, which pro-
vides services to homeless youth
and runaways in Philadelphia. It
helps them transition to a life
with stable housing, a solid edu-
cational foundation, and sus-
tained employment.
Ticket prices for daytime per-
formances are $9 for children/se-
nior citizens and $11 for adults.
The Wednesday evening perform-
ance is $11 for children/seniors
and $12 for adults. To purchase
tickets, visit www.mainstage.org
or call 227-3091. After Annie, Jr.,
Mainstage will present one final
Childrens Theatre production,
Disney Princesses and Friends,
which runs August 3-5.
Cherry Hills Weaver directs Annie, Jr.
Special to The Sun
Miss Hannigan (Rebecca Steinberg of Marlton) just loves those Lit-
tle Girls, especially the fiesty little Annie (Darby Pumphrey of Mulli-
ca Hill) who ruins all of Miss Hannigans evil plans.

Eric Van joins
Flaster/Greenberg
In what has become a busy
summer at Flaster/Greenberg,
the turn of the
calendar has sig-
naled the arrival
of a new mem-
ber of the Bank-
ruptcy, Financial
Restructuring
and Risk Man-
agement Depart-
ment at the firm.
Attorney Eric J. Van has joined
the group recently. Last month,
noted bankruptcy attorney Harry
J. Giacometti arrived as a share-
holder.
Van focuses his practice on all
aspects of the bankruptcy
process, including advising and
assisting debtors in the initiation
of cases, creating and implement-
ing plans and lockup agreements,
seeking approval of asset sales,
debtor financing and assumption
of contracts, and representing
creditors on claim, stay relief and
case management matters.
Prior to Flaster/Greenberg,
Van was affiliated with Gordon
Silver, a distinguished law firm
based in Las Vegas, Nevada.
There, he handled a wide variety
of bankruptcy cases, with a focus
on complex corporate reorganiza-
tions necessitated by that regions
depressed economic status. Be-
fore entering the private practice
of law, Van was a law clerk with
United National Insurance Com-
pany and worked as an analyst at
The Vanguard Group, Inc.
