The Mt. Laurel Sun
Its time for Mount Laurels
Ryan Kiernan to shine.
The 14-year-old is the star of an
upcoming production of Disneys
Aladdin, Jr. which will be per-
formed at Mainstage Center for
the Arts Dennis Flyer Theatre in
Blackwood this week.
Kiernan is entering 10th grade
at Lenape High School.
Mainstage Center for the Arts,
the parent program for Summer
Stage, is a non-profit organization
committed to providing a cre-
ative, vibrant, and nurturing en-
vironment for youth and adults.
At Summer Stage everyone
who wants to try for a role audi-
tions and then if the directors
have you in mind for a role, you
get a callback and have to read for
the roles, Kiernan said. And on
the first day of Summer Stage we
get separated into casts then find
out the roles we got once were all
situated.
I was so happy, he added.
Kiernan said he has been in-
volved in theater for six years.
I would love to be able to per-
form on Broadway if I ever get
the chance, he said. And hope-
fully I can receive my training at
a great theater school such as
NYU or Carnegie Mellon or Rut-
gers.
But if I never make it I would
love to be a music teacher at vari-
ous schools, Kiernan continued.
And his family has his back.
My family is amazingly sup-
portive with all my shenanigans,
Kiernan said. They bring me to
each rehearsal, voice lesson, and
dance class and they never miss a
performance.
Im so lucky that theyre able
to do all of that for me, he added.
Kiernan said Mainstage and
Summer Stage make him happy.
See, at Summer Stage every-
one is just one huge family, he
said. We all care deeply for each
other which is a nice change from
school during the year.
Kiernan said he is also in-
volved in the Harmony Show
Choir at Mainstage.
So, I would definitely say that
Mainstage and Summer Stage
offer kids all kinds of opportuni-
ties that they will not find else-

The Mt. Laurel Sun
The Mount Laurel School Dis-
trict will receive an additional
$594,632 in state aid than was pre-
viously announced.
State Sen. Diane Allen said
Mount Laurel is now slated to get
$4,028,712 in aid for next school
year. That's $1,189,264 more than
last year ($2,839,448), or a 41.9-per-
cent increase.
Allen said she worked closely
with the Christie administration
in an effort to gain a more fair
share of school aid dollars in the
final state budget signed by the
governor for communities in
Burlington and Camden counties.
Additional school aid means a
better learning environment for
our children and less pressure on
local property taxes, Allen said.
The additional aid was made
possible by a commitment to fis-
cal discipline and a commitment
to living within our means,
Allen continued. By controlling
runaway state spending, we were
able to prioritize education aid
for suburban districts like ours.
Mount Laurel Superintendent
of Schools Antoinette Rath said
shell celebrate once the aid mate-
rializes.
Until I receive notice from the
Department of Education regard-
ing the official amount to be sent
to the district, I will hope for the
best, Rath said. After the dra-
matic loss in state aid in the 2010-
2011 school year, we did every-
thing possible to keep our ac-
counts under the mandated 2 per-
cent cap and continue to provide
exceptional programming for our
students.
I am 100 percent behind the
possibility of obtaining addition-
al funds, she added.
Rath called the news a wel-
comed surprise.
The possibility of obtaining
increased funds is a good thing,
she said. I think a better long-
term solution may have been to
properly fund the school-funding
formula that is currently in
place.
Rath said she is not sure where
the new money will go.
I am not certain of the strings,
if any, that will be attached to the
additional funding, she said.
Nevertheless, additional dol-
lars does not always mean addi-
tional spending, Rath said. We
will look to do as much as we can
to keep our programs whole and
keep the local tax burden to our
residents as low as possible.
The superintendent said every
area of the school district was hit
equally hard this year.
All budgetary line items

Mount Laurel Township re-
placed two of its emergency med-
ical services ambulances as part
of the townships ongoing capital
improvement plan.
Mount Laurel Emergency Med-
ical Services replaced a 1997
Freightliner, Horton ambulance
with more than 160,000 miles with
a newly constructed 2010 Ford E-
450 Super Duty, Type III, Horton
Ambulance.
This newly constructed ambu-
lance has the latest in safety fea-
tures, including new emergency
warning system technology and
also offers better occupant crash
safety construction. Additionally,
a 2000 Ford E-450 Super Duty, Hor-
ton Type III, Ambulance with
more than 162,000 miles was re-
furbished and remounted onto a
new 2010 Ford E-450, Super Duty
Chassis.
The newly refurbished/re-
mounted ambulance was updated
with all new state-of-the-art LED
emergency warning and interior
lighting systems, many new com-
ponents and hardware, and the
installation of side patient entry
steps to match the existing ambu-
lance fleet. The remounted/refur-
bished ambulance saved as much
as $70,000 over the purchase of
another newly constructed ambu-
lance. The 1997 Freightliner Hor-
ton Ambulance was not cost effec-
tive to remount because a suitable
production chassis was not com-
mercially available, at the time,
for remounting.
Both new ambulances are
equipped with Fleeteyes, an au-
tomatic vehicle locating system
that is monitored by Burlington
County Central Communications
(the 9-1-1 center) to ensure that
the nearest Mount Laurel ambu-
lance is dispatched to each 9-1-1
call to help reduce response
times. The designs of both these
new ambulances will achieve re-
duced maintenance and operat-
ing costs over their predecessors.
It is anticipated that both new
ambulances will service the com-
munity for 10 years or 150,000
miles before requiring replace-
ment.
The new ambulance is num-
bered 3682 and has been assigned
to Station 368, the Charles Kritz
Building located at 1051 South
Church Street and the newly re-
furbished/remounted ambulance
is numbered 3691 and has been as-
signed to Station 369, the Rodger
Sharpe Building located at 201
Masonville Road.

The U.S. Department of De-

Defense Support Services gets DoD contract
This month, when Mount Lau-
rel residents receive their third
quarter property tax bill, they
may see a new tax line for Public
Library Tax.
Is this a new tax? Absolutely
not, according to library officials.
For towns with municipal or
joint libraries, the minimum
funding requirement of one-third
mill library operations tax levy
has been in effect since 1884.
Until this year, appropriations
for these types of libraries were
included within the municipal
tax rate.
This was different for towns
within a county library system,
which have always had a separate
library tax to support library op-
erations.
To ensure fiscal parity among
municipalities that support a
local or joint library and those
that support a county library, on
March 21, Gov. Christie enacted
P.L. 2011, c. 38 (S 2068). The law
provides a dedicated line item on
the property tax bill for the mini-
mum funding to municipal and
joint free public libraries.
Mount Laurel Library wants
you to know that this does not re-
sult in any increased taxes, but
only changes the way your tax
bill looks.
This change reduces the mu-
nicipal tax levy and rate, and cre-
ates a new line item on the tax bill
for library purposes.
Now all state residents that
support a public library will
clearly see the cost of the library
on their property tax bills.
This new law simply provides a
dedicated line item on the proper-
ty tax bill to collect this minimum
funding.
It provides for more trans-
parency in library funding and
creates equity for municipalities
supporting county, municipal and
joint libraries as all will be dis-
played similarly on the tax bill.
It does not result in any in-
creased taxes, nor does it change
existing financial, operational,
personnel, or other relationships
between a municipality and the
library.
More information on this new
law can be found at njla.org/state-
ments/municipaltax_faq.pdf.
Not an increased tax for library

Kiernan counts the staff of
Summer Stage as one of his
greatest influences.
They always have a smile on
their faces and always brighten
everybodys day, he said. But I
also look up to great performers
such as Sutton Foster, John Gal-
lagher Jr., and Kristen
Chenoweth.
These performers always go
all out on stage and are always
willing to take risks, which I
think is admirable, Kiernan
added. If you are interested in
theater, do as much as you can
because the more you practice,
the more you get better and grow
as a performer.
Aladdin, Jr. is sponsored by
Bowman & Company LLC.
The production, directed by
Shaun Leavey of Berlin, brings a
favorite Disney movie to life, but
in a shorter version, designed to
engage even the youngest audi-

The story is enhanced by the
Academy Award-winning musi-
cal score written by Howard
Ashman, Alan Menken, and Tim
Rice including Friend Like

Aladdin, Jr. also features an
entertaining ensemble of more

This program is made possi-

New Jersey State Council on the
Arts/Department of State, a
Partner Agency of the National

Still losing
But its still time to celebrate?
T
his must be an example of the new normal when it
comes to casinos in New Jersey.
Atlantic City casinos saw their revenues fall 3.7 percent in
June. The news was hailed by
some as a victory of sorts for
the industry since that was the
best showing since February,
when they saw revenue drop 1.4
percent.
Lets use gambling parlance
to translate: Hey, my slot ma-
chine stopped only one spot away from the jackpot! Or, That
horse I bet on to win came in a strong second!
You lose.
The casinos have been bleeding money. They still are bleed-
ing money. Only not as much. But it still stinks.
When it comes to the gambling race, New Jersey is way be-
hind, despite being given a huge head start. No sports betting.
Marketing efforts from the state/Atlantic City/the
casinos/some combination thereof are coordinated with all of
the precision and style of a kindergarten class first fire drill.
Nobody saw a threat from casinos popping up in neighboring
states: Dont worry about them. Those busloads of people
dont mind the extra two-hour drive. We have an ocean.
AC isnt dead, but it wont survive without dramatic changes:
a push to get sports gambling (which the state is trying to do,
but most likely wont succeed); coordinated marketing efforts;
cheaper food and hotels; and a general, overall effort to make
the place a destination point.
Vegas is Vegas for all of those reasons, and probably a few
more. And while that city has its problems housing bubble-
burst being No. 1 people still fly from all over the country to
visit, bypassing their local gambling joints to visit.
Until AC casinos get their act together, no one should be par-
tying on the boardwalk because the bad news isnt as bad.
A good bet?
Do you visit Atlantic City
casinos as often as you did
in the past, or do you visit
ones closer to home? Visit
www.mtlaurelsun.com to
share your thoughts.
A Mt. Laurel mans body was
found floating in Manahawkin
Bay on July 1, according to the
state police. John Mee, 61, was
discovered in Ship Bottom by a
passerby about 30 feet away from
a personal watercraft. Mee was
pronounced dead by the State Po-
lice Marine Services Bureau.
A state police spokesman said
there was no apparent damage to
the watercraft and no injury to
Mees body. While a medical con-
dition is suspected, the cause of
death is pending an autopsy.
