T and staying in an Alpine spa, where the accent is on

incorporate products made from local ingredients – herbs

traditional design, using plenty of local Austrian pine, which

medical study, the Austrian Moderate Altitude Study 2000,
discovered that after an activity-based three-week stay in
the mountains, participants had lower blood pressure, had
lost weight and had increased oxygen levels in their blood.

The Hotel
A cosy and traditional retreat, with award-winning cuisine, the
300-year old Schwarz is also home to a state-of-the-art spa
facility. Located on a sunny plateau close to Innsbruck, this is
an ideal hotel for families, with acres of space for kids to run
around while parents soak up the sun by the pool.
The Spa
There’s plenty of room for romance at the Asian-themed spa,
with new private spa suites for two and tailored therapy
programmes for couples. The spa area has four indulgently

Life at the Alpine Resort & Spa Übergossene Alm is all about

use heated pummelling poultices, are fantastic for soothing

Eco-friendly living, with an indulgent twist, in unique surroundings
The Hotel
If you think it is impossible to mix indulgence with healthy living,
pay a visit to the Biohotel Stanglwirt. Beautifully designed, the
entire hotel – all suites, rooms and furniture – is built from
Austrian wood, adhering to eco-friendly principles. Spend days

The Hotel
From the outside, the Krallerhof appears a traditional Austrian
chalet. Once inside, a contemporary hotel is revealed, with

The Hochschober is home to an innovative massage
method - ‘haki’ - ideal for those suffering from stress or having
trouble relaxing. Developed at the hotel by spa therapist
Harald Kitz, ‘haki’ is a fifty-minute treatment using special oils

offer in a traditional Chinese pagoda.
Outdoor Life
In summer the Nockberge mountains are perfect for hiking
and cycling, and there are three idyllic lakes nearby.

including shiatsu, craniosacral therapy and traditional Turkish
massage in the authentic hamam. Top brands such as Sisley

The mountains around the Interalpen offer boundless

It almost sounds too good to be true.

Thermal spas date back to Roman times, when soldiers
marching across Europe discovered that bathing in thermal
waters soothed aching limbs and could even cure wounds.
Over the following centuries, thermal springs were
discovered throughout south-eastern Austria, and by the
early 19th century they had become world famous. Ruling
families from throughout Europe visited the thermal spas,
from the Habsburgs of Austria to our own Edward VII.
The rich salt and mineral content of these waters is
thought to help with aching joints, back and skin problems
and even more serious conditions, such as rheumatism
and arthritis. Many of the Austrian thermal spas have
several different pools, some with jets and fountains to
target specific areas of the body. Saunas, at different
temperatures and with different fragrances, are also an
essential part of the Thermal Spa experience.
A stay in a thermal spa is as much about restoring the
mind as the body. Soaking in warm water under a sparkling
blue sky, surrounding by rolling hills or dramatic peaks, is a
fantastic way to de-stress the mind and help clear away

The thermal springs at the Thermal Spa Resort Ronacher
(p. 28-29) were first discovered in 1033 AD, and the oldest
part of the hotel dates back to the fourteenth century, when
a church was built over the thermal spring, with wooden
baths installed to take advantage of the waters. And at
Reiter’s Supreme Hotel, the newly opened Yin Yang spa
has its own thermal spring that bubbles up from almost
900 metres below; hot, soothing waters that are thought
to increase the defence mechanisms of the human body.

needs. Although treatment packages can be booked in
advance, a doctor will always see you at the beginning of
your stay, mid-way through for a check-up and again at
