Annexure 1 Study of Pattern Recognition Systems for Electronic Nose Electronic sensing of hazardous chemical vapors at very low concentration levels is becoming increasingly important in present day security and

surveillance scenario . Several technologies are being developed around the world to detect hazardous vapor content . The SSPL Delhi has developed e-nasika as a portable instrument which can sense the presence of various hazardous chemicals at low concentration with least false alarm and quick response times. The data

obtained from e-nasika has to be analyzed for detection of various vapors and their concentration levels. software for It is proposed to investigate various algorithms and

detecting vapor patterns and concentration levels from the data

obtained from e-nasika.

The technology behind e-nasika is based on SAW resonators. A SAW resonator produces a shift in its frequency of operation in the presence of certain chemical vapors. In an e-Nasika, an array of such SAW sensors with different chemical coatings are used . When exposed to a particular chemical vapor, each sensor in the array exhibits different acoustic behavior resulting in different frequency shifts.

Pattern recognition techniques can be used for identifying chemicals and their concentration levels from the frequency shift data.

Annexure 2 Literature survey reveals several research groups have built reliable electronic nose systems based on SAW devices using statistical signal processing techniques and data analysis tools such as principal component analysis, linear discriminant analysis , support vector machines, artificial neural networks etc. Electronic olfaction is an important research area and has wide practical

applications. Several types of sensors have been proposed and practically implemented in recent years [1] . Several practical electronics nose systems have been designed and deployed in classifying beer[2] , coffee[3], tea[4] etc. Several research groups have explored the possibility of using electronic nose in chemical vapor detection[5-6]. Data analysis and classification methods for electronic nose is surveyed in [7]. Several papers report the use of artificial neural networks to classify data obtained from e-nose sensors[8].
