Part I of this body of work commented on the levels of sex in terms of sensuality and spirituality. It was confronting with the added shock value as well as though provoking for the audience. It was about confronting ourselves of our own spiritual and sens ual equilibrium regarding sex. How do we comprehend life, sex, death? It is the ultimate paradox of the human race. We were born to die. Where is the balance in our lives? Does our suppressed views, or those supported by society conflict with our true eq uilibrium? Where we are truly happy? Where is our state of Nirvana? It is the conflict of the tangible and intangible, the physical and mental; bringing them both in to balance out each other. The Ying and Yang of the human being. Sexual experimentation; it s about finding the balance physically and mentally. Part II of this body of work comments on the human self -obsession, the human condition of death and the human relationship with death.More hands because we can do so many more things, more minds because we think more than a million ideas. The concept is not entirely spiritual and religious based rather in the process of creating the artwork, themes of iconic religious gods and my history and knowledge of the history and working closely with them is being reflected in my recent works. Last year, 2010 term 3, my concept was about the Modern Human Being, being the iconic god of the 21st century, but in this body of work I am focusing on balancing the spiritual aspect with the physical side and where that fits into the paradox of the human life cycle. Head on 2011 The lace head was crafted from lace sheet and PVA and fabric glue. It is the representation of how I feel humans think of themselves. We, as humans believe that we must attain excellence, we are the top of the animal food chain, we are wiser, and what we dream, even if it is impractical, is attainable. We are pretentious beings but there is no one above us to set us in place therefore we think we are correct. The head is shaped similarly to an inverted light bulb and with the light illuminating from within it, it clearly signifies an idea= head, light bulb?! It is a head piece which sits ontop of the model's head; and this helps clarify the concept that it is a big head. We humans have a big head. We think our ideas are the best. We believe and worship ourselves religiously -and this is where the religious iconic themes come into play.
We are Gods
This collection of images is the selective re -creation of reality according to my metaphysical value judgments. Death in an inevitable fact of human existence. Fearful, repulsed, curious and attracted our attitudes toward death are ambivalent and reflect the dual character of our post modernising society which blurs the boundary between life and d eath.
The paradox in our society regarding death is that though we are fearful of the prospect of death and try to avoid it at all costs with the help of medicine - we humans still involve ourselves in acts that will ultimately lead us to death faster. Untitled (smoke) and Untitled (McDouble) present to us two acts which are daily occurrences that harm our bodies and lead to death quicker. Smoking and eating McDonalds is a normal act which humans participate in, whether for social, personal or instinctive purposes. Though we know that these are bad for the health of our bodies we continue to use them because we know that with the help of medicine we can prolong our lives, therefore we can do whatever we want. Humans think that they are immortal in a sense because as described by Damien Hirst in the title of his tiger shark preserved in formaldehyde, it is because of The Physical Impossibility of Death in the mind of someone livin g. We cannot comprehend death therefore we cannot fear something we do not kno w. Taking into context that we think we are immortal, I have applied this thought aesthetically into the artwork by presenting humans almost god -like. We have the scientific means of doing anything that "God" can do, with the exception of death, therefore it is fitting that the human is covered in gold to represent our present immortality. Untitled (multihead) expresses a frantic mind of a human/god. It represents the human thought process at the present moment in the 21st century. In the 21st century th e average attention span is 8 seconds, so I thought it would be fitting for the mind to look busy and undecided. Our thought process does not include the past or future, only the present moment. It is the way of our society; out of sight out of mind. The human/god has its eyes closed because if it doesn t see anything it does not exist. This attitude of humans when approaching the situation of death and because we cannot see death we put it out of our minds. Metaphysical Part I It is the manifestation of self so we do not have to confront things beyond us. Things beyond us do not affect us therefore it is irrelevant to the present moment. The truth is it is our self-obsession. We can do many things- this is symbolised by the hands multiplying. It also pays homage to the Hindu gods with many arms- represents the difference between humans and the divine but I am blurring the differences commenting on how we are immortal (because we are able to do many things that were once thought to be impossible) in the present moment. Death will surely come but if it is "out of mind , [it surely is] out of sight". The music chosen is the sitar; it is eerie yet uplifting to comment on the cycle of life celebration then death.
