A. GOD IS RIGHTEOUS
Rom 3:25-26 God presented Christ as a sacrifice of atonement, through the shedding of his blood to be received by faith. He did this to demonstrate his righteousness, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished he did it to demonstrate his righteousness at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

God is righteous and cannot turn from that - he does not, and cannot allow sin, and all who do sin come under his judgment. God does not sin in any way the Gospel does not make light of sin but exalts God who bears all the judgements and punishments which are rightly the result of sin - God does this in love and enables the sinner to pass from condemnation to righteousness. Jn 3:18, 5:24, Rom 8:1, 1 Cor 11:32

B. THE SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS OF MAN

Rom 10:3 -Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to Gods righteousness. Isa 64:6 -All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away.

Rom 3:9-18 records sin as God sees it and fully describes mans condition. In society we have man made standards for righteousness - yet each stands before God and is judged as God sees them, not by other men. Only through Gods grace and his provision in Christ will anyone enter heaven.

What then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. All In society we have man have turned aside; together they have made standards for become worthless; no one does good, notrighteousness - yet each even one." C. 1. IMPUTATION IS SHOWN IN ADAMS SIN BEING IMPUTED TO THE WHOLE HUMAN RACE
Rom 5:12-21, and also the sin of man is imputed to Christ when he became a sin offering for the whole world 2 Cor 5:14, Heb 2:9, 1 Jn 2:2 Righteousness from God, in Christ, is imputed to all who believe - 1 Cor 1:30, 2 Cor 5:21

Obviously this is not by works, observing the law etc. - Rom 3:21 - But now apart from the law the righteousness of God has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. Being imputed with the righteousness of God means it is not affected by how good or bad the person is.

C. 2. THE RESULT OF IMPUTATION IS SEEN IN THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF CHRIST BEING ON A BELIEVER WHEN WE ARE IN CHRIST
We are united with Christ by the HSp - God then sees us as his own son - Jn 17:23 - he loves and accepts us - and also accounts to us the righteousness of God 2 Cor 5:21 -For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. Rom 3:21-22 - But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to itthe righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe.

C. 3. BIBLICAL ILLUSTRATIONS OF IMPUTATION

Adam & Eve - clothed in skins needed the shedding of blood. Abraham by believing God - Gen 15:6, Rom 4:9-22 Priests of old - clothed in righteousness - Ps 139:2 Believer is robed in a garment of righteousness - Rev 19:8 Paul and Philemon 17-18 - So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.

C. 4. IMPUTATION AFFECTS THE STANDING AND NOT THE STATE

It is put upon us - even though we still sin - it is nothing to do with our works - yet it is an eternal standing for our lives.

NT - righteousness and justify are from the same root. God declares as justified forever the one whom he sees in Christ. Justification is not a feeling it is a certain fact for the mind of God.

It is; By faith - Rom 5:1 Through grace - Titus 3:4-7 On the basis of the death and resurrection of Christ Rom 3:24, 4:25 It is abiding and unchanging resting on what God has decreed. In forgiveness our sin is cancelled, a -ve activity - in justification righteousness is imputed, a +ve activity.

D. RIGHTEOUSNESS IMPARTED BY THE SPIRIT

Filled with the Spirit the child of God produces; Righteous works - Rom 8:4 Fruit - Gal 5:22-23 Gifts - 1 Cor 12:7ff These are produced in the believer by the Spirit of God who is walking in the Spirit and not the flesh - in essence the will of God is now fulfilled in the life of the believer - this could not be done by the believer but is done in them, a life imparted with the righteousness of God.
