ABOUT COACH MARIA
Personal / Career:

TRAIN. PERFORM. SHINE.

Since I am new to you this year, I thought it would be important to share some information about myself with you.

First and foremost, I am a wife and mother of 3 awesome kiddos (all of which are either in gymnastics or cheerleading here at Kids World). My husband and I started dating in high school and have been married for 10 years now. My son Blaine is 8, and my daughters Kennedy and Avery are 5 and 4. My family is the most important thing in the world to me! I am the counselor at Genoa High School. After teaching middle school for nine years, I discovered that I love connecting with my students and helping them through the rough patches in their lives. This was what drove me to go back to school for a second masters degree (ugh!) and pursue counseling. I LOVE MY COUNSELING JOB! I have found that counseling adolescents has been the toughest and the most rewarding job I have ever had. It is my hope that my skill as a counselor will come in handy while working with our cheerleaders this year.

Cheer Experience: Through cheering, coaching and running competitions, I have been involved in the cheerleading world for the past 20 years. I have coached middle school, JV, varsity and allstar cheerleading. I LOVE this sport, and Im looking forward to have a fun and rewarding time coaching this year. I have a very critical eye for critiquing routines. This may drive the team crazy, but I will work through the routine VERY slowly, perfecting EACH count. I have found this to be the ONLY way to make our performances the BEST they can be. I am founder of Stella Bertz Cheer For A Cure, a national 501c3 non-profit organization that runs the Stella Bertz Cheer For A Cure Championships to raise funds to fight cancer. I started the organization in memory of my mother and former cheerleading coach, Stella Bertz. My husband and brother-in-law have taken the organization to a whole new level over the past year. This coming season we are scheduled to have 13 Cheer For A Cure competitions scheduled in 9 states! This organization is very close to my heart, and I truly enjoy dedicating my time to making a difference in the fight against cancer.

Coaching Philosophy: My goal is to offer your child a safe, challenging and fun cheerleading program, whether it is your first cheerleading experience or you have been cheering for many years. Team members will learn how to dedicate themselves as an individual and as part of a team. They will learn to set and reach goals with the help of their teammates and their coaches. We strive to help each individual reach his or her personal and athletic potential. My purpose is not only to develop the best team possible, but also to promote self-discipline self-esteem, integrity, team work and commitment in a fun and safe environment. To me, communication is a very big part of my job as a coach. To make this easier, each person should have been given a personal file with your athletes name on it. These files are located in the front of the gym near the door. If you cannot find a file with your name on it, please notify me. Any memos, such as newsletters, competition information, etc., will be distributed via the files. Please have your athlete check these regularly. Athletesplease be sure to give this information to your parents/guardians. I will also try to communicate regularly through email and Facebook, as this is the primary way I communicate with most people.

2011-2012 Program Rules
Parent/ Athlete Codes of Conduct

TRAIN. PERFORM. SHINE.

If you ever have a problem, with anything, please do not hesitate to contact coach or the owners. We are here for YOU. Practices are mandatory. We MUST have each team member at every practice! At this time, practices are on Sundays 5-8pm and Wednesdays 8-9:30 (Wednesdays will be mostly stunting practice). It is your responsibility to wear the appropriate practice wear to every practice. Any additional clothing items (sweats, long pants, etc), cell phones, school bags or gym bags must be kept in cubbies. Cell phones must be turned off. Snacks may NOT be eaten during water breaks at practice. If we give a longer break, that will be the only time a small snack may be eaten. No profanity or abusive language. You must arrive at all practices, competitions or any scheduled event on time. Punctuality is a MUST. All squad and routine decisions are left to the discretion of the coaches. Please trust and respect our decisions. Please feel free to talk to your coach about anything; just remember to do it at the appropriate times. For example, approaching a coach in the middle of a practice would not be an appropriate time. Never post any negative comments on Facebook, any websites, or chat rooms. We are here to SUPPORT each other and we must be a united and positive team. It is normal for allstar teams to go through losses and additions of team members. The dismissal/addition of a team member is solely the coach and owners decision. Practices may be changed or added at any time during the season. Parents, please be sure you know what is going on with your squad. Please check your email/Facebook regularly. Withholding a child from practice or a competition should never be used as a form of punishment. During competitions, we would love to show our gym pride. Therefore, please be sure to watch and cheer for the other OEA teams at the competition and parents, be sure to wear your OEA gear. All OEA athletes and family/friends will show good sportsmanship at all times.

GOOD SPORTSMANSHIP, POLITE MANNERS AND A KIND DISPOSITION ARE MANDATORY AT ALL COMPETITIONS AND PRACTICES. IT IS MY HOPE THAT OUR PROGRAM IS ONE THAT IS KNOWN FOR HAVING TRUE CLASS AND FRIENDLY ATTITUDES. PLEASE HELP MAKE THIS HAPPEN!

Tardiness Absences

TRAIN. PERFORM. SHINE.

You are considered tardy to practice if you are not on the practice floor ready to practice when your practice BEGINS. This means; appropriate practice wear on, shoes on and tied, hair up, snacks and drinks taken care of, ready to go.

As you probably know, it is almost impossible to have a productive practice without ALL of our team members there. Therefore, attendance is MANDATORY. Your team members are counting on you to be there. For ANY ABSENCE, the cheerleader and parent MUST fill out the Absence Form (in this packet) and turn it in. Please turn it in BEFORE the absence, if this is possible. If it is not, then you must CALL the gym to report your absence and the form must be turned in at the next practice. Excused Absences include: A school function that results in a grade for that class A death in the family A contagious sickness

Unexcused Absences include, but are not exclusive to: Jobs Dances, birthday parties, concerts, etc. School projects, and homework or tests (please be sure you are using your time outside of practice for your schoolwork commitments)

There are precious few hours that we have our team together, every moment must be used. It is extremely important you get to practice on time and try not to miss. Excessive tardiness or absences will result in dismissal from your team. Also, you must attend practice if you are sick and not contagious, let your coach know what is going on, but your presence will be needed at every practice. There should be NO absences during the week leading up to a competition. We cannot stress how important your attendance is, there is choreography, stunting, formations, etc. worked on at every practice, if you miss that information, you hold the entire team back. Injuries and Conditioning Parents need to note cheerleading is a highly competitive and dangerous sport. The stunts and tumbling could lead to injuries. These include but are not limited to bruises, pulled or strained muscles, torn or strained ligaments, broken bones, dislocations, paralysis or even death. The coaches take every precaution to limit these injuries. Unfortunately, we cannot prevent them all. In the event that your child is injured we will take every necessary step to ensure your child's well-being. All-star cheerleading is a very strenuous sport. Therefore, all of the athletes in our program should strive to be in top physical condition. This includes flexibility, strength and endurance. If needed, you may be required to take an additional tumbling or a stretch/stunt class. All-stars are expected to take a minimum of one tumbling class per week. 4

Important Notes: It is expected that team members wear their practice uniform at EACH practice (dark shorts and a white shirt
will be accepted until members have the practice uniform). We also expect each team member to wear their CHEER SHOES during each practice. Bare feet and running shoes will not be allowed.

success. We perform these drills and stunts EACH practice until our stunts are PERFECT. We expect 100% EFFORT even on the easiest drills they will not count unless they are CLEAN, TIGHT and CORRECT because how you practice is how you will perform! Conditioning: Traditionally, we have put conditioning at the end of practice, IF we had time. This year, conditioning will be
done before the end of practice, so that we will ALWAYS have time for it. Our reasoning for this is. We have an awesome routine and very talented team members, but if we do not have the STRENGTH and ENDURANCE to perform our skills and routine then our routine and talent do not matter! WE NEED the STRENGTH and ENDURANCE! We will rotate through the following 3 conditioning routines doing 1 each week. 2011-12 Ohio Elite AllStars; Maria Maluchnik. All rights reserved. 7

OHIO ELITE ALLSTARS

Conditioning Routine #1
Plyo-Jacks (1 minute) Speed Skater/High Knees (1 minute) Continuous Straight Jumps (1minute) Push-ups (4 sets of 10) Assisted Bar Pull-ups (Groups of 3 -2 sets of 10 for each person) Dips (2 sets of 10) Lunges (2 sets of 20 steps) Pike / Straddle-Ups (2 sets of 10) Hollow Body Rocks (2 sets of 10)

TRAIN. PERFORM. SHINE.

Conditioning Routine #2
Plyo-Lunges (1 minute) Front Kick w/ Squat (1minute) Power Straight Jumps (1minute) Partner Chest Press (2 sets of 10) Assisted Handstand Push-ups (Groups of 3 2 sets of 10) 1st Floor, 2nd Floor, 3rd Floor (2 times around) Hip Flexers (2 sets of 10 per leg) Seated Toe Touches (2 sets of 10) Superman Rocks (2 sets of 20)

Conditioning Routine #3

Routine Work: Obviously this will be the most important work we will do together. Please understand that my top priority
will be for us to make our routine, tight, precise, and CLEAN. What this will mean for you is MANY tedious hours of going through each and EVERY 8 count section until EVERYONE has it down perfect. This may be unexciting and tiring.but it is the only way we will get to where we need to be. We expect that you will take this very seriously, give 100% effort for each count we perform, even if we perform it 1,000 times! This is where your good attitude and trust in your coaches will play a huge role. Also, please keep in mind, as coaches we reserve the right to change peoples positions, routine moves, or anything we deem necessary in order to make our performances the BEST. We expect you to trust and respect our judgments and the choices we make in perfecting the routine. With that being said, please realize that NO ONES position is set in stone every spot is up for grabs, and we put in the person we think is BEST for each spot. Finally, there is one more major item I feel it is necessary to mention here. Please understand that being an allstar cheerleader means more than showing up to practice on Sundays competing at competitions. In order to make this our best year yet (which I think we have the potential to do!!) we are going to need everyone to put in practice time at home. PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE be practicing your routine at home! Do it so much that it drives your parents and siblings nuts! In addition, you will notice that we have not scheduled tumbling time into practice. This is because there simply is not time for it on Sundays. PLEASE be coming to tumbling classes during the week! There is one last thing you can be doing on your own to help make this a great season. CONDITIONING and STRETCHING! (I know, everyones favorite.) See the at home conditioning form for exercises and stretches you should be doing on your own, at home.

AT HOME CONDITIONING & STRETCHING
General Stretching

TRAIN. PERFORM. SHINE.

In order to stay at the top of our game all cheerleaders should be conditioning their bodies DAILY! Conditioning not only alleviates muscle soreness throughout the year but performing specific conditioning CAN and WILL increase your performance as an athlete and cheerleader. Specific muscle memory and muscle quickness to perform stunts, jumps, dances, etc. rely solely on strength and repetition. With this said, here are some general conditioning stretches and strengtheners, as well as, strengtheners and muscle-memory tasks for you to complete EVERYDAY!

Prior to conditioning it is important to stretch EVERY muscle that will be used. Also, every joint (ankles, knees, hips, shoulders, elbows, wrists and neck and back) should be readied for use. As we stretch and warm up, synovial fluid is released into our joints and connective tissues to protect from injury. You should do at least 5-10 minutes of fast walking/jogging to warm your body, THEN, begin stretching. Every stretch should be held (without bouncing) for at least 20 seconds. Dont forget to warm those joints! You will notice an increase in flexibility quickly if you do this everyday! General Conditioning 1. Cardio-vascular conditioning is important to cheerleaders. Even though our competitions only last for less than 3 minutes, those 3 minutes require optimum strength and endurance. Cheerleaders should run/jog/fastwalk/dance between practices as needed to gain endurance. 15 20 minutes daily is a good habit. 2. Strength training should be done as well. Here are some exercises all cheerleaders should be focusing on: Squats spread your legs a little more than hip distance apart, keeping you body weight equal over your toes, bring your hips into a sitting position (like you are about to sit in a chair). BE SURE to never extend your knees beyond your toes. Arms should come out in front to hold your position. DO 3 sets of 10 squats! Push Ups these can be done with your knees on the floor or with your legs straight. Start with your knees on the floor and slowly graduate to straight legs. In yoga, we call this position the plank position. Hands are directly under your shoulders or slightly wider than your shoulders (your preference) and your body should be all in one line meaning your hips should not be creating a steeple! If you keep your knees on the floor, your body should be at a 45 degree angle knees to shoulders. You will easily feel the right position because your whole abdomen will be tight you will feel it! DO 5-10 pushups for 3 sets. This is challenging so dont get frustrated and stop. Keep trying and do them everyday you will be amazed at the quick results! Crunches Ugh! I know these are boring! Try different variations to keep them interesting. Remember, if your back begins hurting you are doing too many or are doing them wrong! DO 3 sets of 25 crunches to start and keep adding to each set as they become easier. Crunches should ALWAYS be done with at least 1 knee bent with that foot on the floor to protect the lower back from injury. Also, dont pull up on your head and neck. Your finger tips should just be touching behind your ears not cranking up on the neck. In order to impact all of the muscles in your abdominal region try some of these variations: a. Extend one leg and keeping it about 6 inches off the ground for 25 crunches then switch to the other leg. b. Cross ankles and extend bent legs toward the ceiling for a set. c. Put both feet on the ground with knees bent and take one shoulder to the opposite knee for the crunch. Switch sides after each set. d. Keep head and neck on the ground and tilt hips toward the belly button for the crunch.

Specific Conditioning Flyers

TRAIN. PERFORM. SHINE.

V-sits (or boat as we call it in yoga). Sit on the floor and bring your knees to your chest. Place your hands behind your knee joints and balance on your tailbone. Slowly extend your legs as you extend your finger tips towards your toes. Hold this position for as long as you can! Release and do it again. Try to work up to 10 repetitions. When you are done, roll over to your stomach and bring your elbows up under your shoulders to stretch those abs. Plank Variations get into a push up position. Remember, if you can feel your abdominal muscles engaged and your butt is in the same line as your shoulders, you are in the right position. Hold this position! Then, as you hold this position, tap one knee at a time on the floor. Another variation is to hold the plank position and rotate one hip then the other toward the floor. And finally, hold the plank position on your elbows instead of your hands (you will be on your elbows and your toes with everything else off of the floor and parallel to the floor) and slowly press your body forward and backward as your hold the position. These are core strengthening exercises that will help with your abdominal strength as well as your back. Twist Jump (for twist cradles) stand with your arms in a T. Lead with your right hip and wrap your right arm around your body as your jump 360 degrees. Abductor Strengthening your abductors are the muscles of your inner thigh. As a flyer, you know that being able to recognize and contract these muscles are important. Lie on your back with your legs extended toward the ceiling. If you need to place your hands under your butt, thats okay. Point your toes! Take legs out to hip distance apart and then bring them back. DO 5 sets of 10. THEN, alternate your feet one foot forward then back crossing at the ankles as quickly as you can. DO 5 sets of 10.

Specific Conditioning Bases and Back Spots Plank Variations get into a push up position. Core strength is essential for protection of your back during stunts! Push Ups, Push Ups, Push Ups ramp up your strength by adding push ups against a wall, in the pool against the edge or by raising your body off of the ground using your kitchen counter, side of the pool, dresser in your bedroom, etc. Squats, Squats, Squats vary your training by using one of your cheerleading shoes, or a dumbbell (if you have one), or a large bag of floor or sugar and mimic the motion of loading in a flyer and taking her to a half or a full. OR, do squat jumps regular squats but jump out of them reaching for the ceiling. Lower Leg Strengthening stand on the bottom stair of your front porch, inside stairs, etc with your heels hanging off of the stair and slowly lift your body up and down using your toes. DO 3 sets of 25. When you are done, stretch both the front and back of your legs. ALL cheerleaders need to find a mirror, window, etc where they can see themselves doing their jumps. DO your jumps over and over and over EVERYDAY! Side kicks when you are standing around or watching TV, stand up and bring your arms to a T position. Kick toward your fists alternating legs do this as fast as you can without losing your balance or position. Straddle Raises (Hip Flexers) sit on the floor in a straddle position. Raise and lower one leg at a time. Then, raise and hold the leg. Do as many times as you can.

Jumps!

Remember, each cheerleaders core strength and specific muscle strength and memory are what will take our team from good to great.

Do your part!!!!!
