Comprehension strategies

1. Question Answer Relationships (QAR Teaching) Introduces students to basic types of question Literal Right there Reading the lines. Inferential Think & Search Reading between the lines. Beyond the text On my Own Reading beyond the lines 2. Reciprocal Teaching Useful for young and poor readers. Guided practice in application of 4 strategies Questioning: What? When? Where? Who? Clarifying: Did you understand? Was anything not clear? Summarizing: If we were to tell about just this little part what would we say? Predicting: What will we learn in the next part? What will happen next? 3. Survey, Question, Read Recite and Review (SQ3R) Survey: Student surveys assignment, headings, skimming & reading Question: Students turn each heading into a question Read: Students read to find the answers Recite: Say the answers aloud Review: Write notes to answer the questions. Review what theyve read. 4. Directed Reading Thinking Activity (DR-TA) This can only be used with unfamiliar stories Introduce story before beginning to read Show cover and ask students to make predictions Students read or listen to beginning of the story, then asked to reject or confirm predictions Have children reflect upon their predictions. 5. Know- Want Learned ( K-W-L) Create large chart. Divide into 3 sections (What we know, what we want to learn and what we have learned) Brainstorm what students know about theme already. Turn incorrect information into questions for what we want to know. Write questions into W column Continue to add questions and begin to write information that students have learned into L column At end of unit complete the L column, getting students to reflect on what theyve learned. 6. Anticipation Guides Teacher identifies several major concepts related to reading assignment/unit Develop 4-6 statements that are general enough to stimulate discussion and can be used to clarify misconceptions. The list can be placed upon a chart/individual sheets. Students respond to the statement, working in groups, pairs or individually agree/disagree etc. Whole class discussion Students read text and compare their response to what is stated in the reading material Further discussion. Students cite information in text that supports/defends their position. 7. Oral Comprehension Strategies Cloze Procedure Read and Re-tell Non-Verbal Interpretation of a Text Sequencing. Skimming and Scanning: Identify key words in a selected passage. Pupils are asked to find the listed key words in the passage. Composing Questions 1
