PLCs and VI
For Industrial Interlocks Control and Protection
Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) are the devices which are now widely used in all types of process industries for automatic control of operation on a real time basis. These devices can handle complex operational functions of mechanical electrical devices in, say, machining, packaging, materials handling or other automated industrial operations. In first part of this program the student gain knowledge about PLC hardware and programming methods and use them for simple industrial applications. Virtual Instrumentation (VI) is a suite of graphical system design tools, that has advanced control, highspeed measurements, precision motion, machine vision, and human machine interfaces (HMIs) . The core of VI is a graphical programming environment which can develop sophisticated measurement, test, and control systems using intuitive graphical icons and wires that resemble a flowchart. In the second part of the program the students get to learn basic features and use an open and flexible graphical development environment that combines the ease of use of configuration-based tools with the flexibility of a powerful programming language.

This is a 48 hour program divided into 16 sessions of 3 hours which uses a multi-pronged approach involving interactive classes, simulation software and self-study assignments . At the beginning of program, the student will have an initial reading assignment (which will be delivered in electronic format in advance of the presentations). The student practice on PLC and VI programming on real life industrial interlocks control and protection systems by means of simulation software made available at the training centre. There will be coursework or problems to be submitted and student will also take up practical exercises using these simulation software . They prepare and upload short presentations on specific areas of the program; this would be treated as a task for assessment and feedback. Better presentations would be used for sharing of knowledge amongst participants. The participant will have continuous ongoing support from the trainers directly or through e-mail.

The Training
This training is designed to benefit participants with information and hands on practice on the application of PLCs and VI to the interlock, control and protection of plants and factories. It is suitable for people who have little or no exposure to PLCs and VI, but expect to become involved in some or all aspects of these at a later stage. It aims to give practical advice from experts in the field, by means of simple but practical examples to achieve a shorter learning curve and more confidence. While the training program is ideal for electrical, electronics and instrumentation engineering persons , those in computer engineering or others relevant fields and new to PLCs and VI, much of the workshop and additional ematerial will be of great value to enhance knowledge and acquire skills to take up larger and more challenging tasks ahead.

Practical Sessions
The practical sessions conducted in this training program progresses from the basics to advanced level which challenge even the experienced engineer in the industry today. The trainees will undertake a series of practical hands-on sessions, of relevance to industry, based on the simulated PLC and VI supplied during training. Full working solutions for all problems will be distributed to participants after tehy have attempted the practical.
