A Message from Jumaane

Dear Friends, I am proud to launch my new e-Newsletter today! Ever since you gave me the honor of serving the 45th Council District back in 2009, my goal has been to engage our entire community in the issues that affect us all. This periodic publication is another way that my office and I will be able to reach out to you and inform you of the important happenings around the 45th. There are a number of features of this e-Newsletter that I hope you will find both informative and inspiring, including A Message from Jumaane, an update note from me to you. Whats Happening Around the 45th? is a roundup of upcoming community events, some of which are hosted by our office. Update from City Hall will provide a glimpse into the latest Council meetings and hearings, legislative goals we are trying to achieve as well, our collaboration with other Council Members. Jumaane in the News captures appearances I have made lately in the district as well as around the city. Then there is Heroes of the 45 th, of which I am extremely proud. This will highlight the outstanding people and organizations which are doing great work in our community. STAY ACTIVE! keeps you informed of ways you can get involved in important causes we, as well as our community partners, are championing. Neighborhood Highlights reviews recent community events and news that you should know. Finally, check out Helpful Contacts for the 45 th District and Stay in Touch with Council Member Williams; both of these sections will provide you resources that should start to address any of your current or future concerns. Update from City Hall

On June 28th, Council Member Williams introduced a resolution supporting an extension of our states millionaires tax, an income tax surcharge on households earning more than $1 million per year. An extension of the millionaire's tax is essential to New York's longer-term efforts to balance the City and State budgets, maintain essential services, and achieve some measure of tax fairness. The resolution, co-sponsored by Council Member Brad Lander and introduced on behalf of the Progressive Caucus, supports legislation introduced in the New York State Legislature (A7802/S5453) by the Speaker of the NY State Assembly, Sheldon Silver. The existing millionaire's tax is set to expire on December 31, 2011, costing the state over $1 billion in the current fiscal year, and nearly $5 billion next year. The state legislation would extend the existing surcharge for those earning over $1 million, and allocate funding for New York's public schools. With the millionaire's tax extension it will be far more possible to responsibly balance the City and State budgets in years to come. We in this city have had to swallow some difficult budget cuts this year, many of which could have been avoided if the Millionaire's Tax were reinstated, said Council Member Williams. The only way we can bring back programs such as the Peter Vallone Scholarship, upon which so many of our young people have relied for their education, and restore the damaging cuts to our youth services is by raising revenue, and Wall Street continues to lobby against paying its fair share. The fact is that we all work and live in this city together and we should all be involved in shared sacrifice for the ultimate benefit of one New York City. If Wall Street refuses to work with us, then we need to support Speaker Silver's continued fight in Albany to restore fairness to our budgetary process.

Heroes of the

45th

Mike Tucker, Founder, Lay Down the Guns Campaign

Q: What work do you do in the 45th? A: My role has been to console families that have lost loved ones to violence, and try to guide them in the tough process ahead so they are not overwhelmed. Q: Why did you decide to get involved in the community? A: The death of my son in 2005 made me realize that more needed to be done in the community, and that I had the unique opportunity to relate with families. Q: Tell me a valuable experience you had in your service. A: There have been so many. I can say that I was honored to be recognized by the Daily News for the work that I have been doing to curb the gun violence epidemic in our community. Q: How can people get involved? A: Everything I do is out of my own pocket, so support is great. More than that though, please speak out against gun violence in your community publicly when it occurs. We all need to raise our voices.

On July 14th, Council Member Williams joined elected officials and community leaders to protest comments made in the Daily News that disparaged Flatbushs Caribbean restaurant community.

On July 9th, Council Member Williams, pictured with rapper and constituent Jeru the Damaja, greeted the crowd at Celebrate Brooklyn!s Lyricist Lounge, hosted by BRIC Arts at Prospect Park.
