Principle of management is a unique course in the sense that it provides a rich interactive learning experience designed to equip students with the basic intellectual knowledge and tools needed to face the ever increasing business challenges. The course starts with the history of management and moves on to understanding its different functional areas. The course explores the application of management theory and shifts to operational managerial challenges viz planning, organizing, leading and controlling business activities. Special attention has been given to social responsibilities, managerial ethics and importance of leadership in organization.
Learning Objectives

1. The two core objectives of this course are: To develop an understanding about management and its functional areas such as planning, organizing, leading and controlling. To develop managerial skills such as analyzing, thinking, organizing, communicating, reporting, and decision making etc. These are only a few of the managerial skills managers ought to develop in themselves. 2. Moreover, upon completion of the course, the students should: Understand the basic managerial concepts and their application in ensuring high performance. Understand and appreciate different managerial functions and their application in local organization setting. Be knowledgeable of the theory and practical applications of the organizational processes. Be able to appreciate the importance of ethical and moral side of managerial functions.

Group Research Paper Your project report (35-40 pages) should have sections given hereunder. Each group will deliver a presentation of 20 minutes duration followed by 10 minutes Q/A session to the entire class in last one/two weeks before the final term exams (exact dates for each group will be intimated after the midterm exams). Divide these portions amongst the group members. Decide upon this issue within yourselves and submit the group division of work in first class of next week positively. Each member will work on his/her specific portion and then all will work collectively to integrate the entire report and project presentation. Submit the introduction portion by the first class of 10th week. Remaining portions will be submitted a week after the relevant topic/chapter has been covered in the class. Remember each submission has graded marks attached to it so do not miss out. I am positive this exercise will strengthen your understanding of management concepts. What information technology is being used in the company and how it is affecting managers work? What human resource management process is the company following?

What are its recruitment and selection, training and development, performance management, and employee relations policies?

Are the methods they are following appropriate in view of their environment and strategy?

Leading: What is the level of job involvement and organizational commitment of its employees? What is the work group behavior of its employees? What steps do they take to motivate their employees? What leadership styles/models are the managers following in this company? Are the methods they are following appropriate in view of their environment and strategy? Controlling: What control process exists in the company?

How do they control the performance of the organization? How do they carry out operations management? How effective is their value chain management? Are the methods they are following appropriate in view of their environment and strategy?

Conclusions and Recommendations Include your conclusions about organizations planning. Organizing, leading and controlling functions. Are they doing a good job or not. Do they need any changes? Suggest them in the form of your recommendations.

Assigned Case Students in groups are required to prepare the assigned case and present it in the class

with the help of PowerPoint slides in immediately next class after completion of the chapter. This carries 5 graded marks. All groups will email a soft copy of the solution on kasrazvi_30962@yahoo.com a day before the presentation. Whenever a group either fails to submit the soft copy in time or to make a good presentation to the class, all members will have to submit handwritten solutions in next class, failing which they will score zero marks out of 5.
