HISTORY

Historically the Sport Utility Vehicle has been considered a midsized passenger vehicle. It was designed to have the carrying capacity of a pick-up truck, but differ in size and performance. Sport utility vehicles are descendents of the other sport vehicles such as commercial vehicles and military vehicles including Jeep and the Land Rover. These vehicles were followed by other sport utility vehicles. Throughout history the design of the SUV has been changed. There are several models of the SUV that are considered compact sport utility vehicles. This simply means that they are smaller in size in some way. It could be that seats have been removed or the carrying capacity or cargo space could be slightly smaller than the standard vehicle. From the invention of the combustion engine and Henry Ford's assembly line for the Model T to the high tech versions of today's Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs), the evolution of transportation has been remarkable. America has long had a love affair with its automobiles; SUV owners aren't any different when it comes to their passion. Whether it's the fullsize Ford Excursion or the Suzuki Samurai, the owners of these vehicles make as much a fashion statement as they do a choice in transportation. And, as in clothing fashion, everything old becomes new again.

So, as the new model year approaches, maybe it's time for us to see just where SUVs have come from, so that we'll have some idea as to where exactly it is we may be going. Is it a fad gone mad as one author suggests? The Early Days Many believe that the birth of the SUV began as the "depot hack." The depot hack was a vehicle that transported people (similar to today's taxi/hack) and luggage from the train stations (depots). They were widely known as a carryalls or suburbans. Depot hacks were also believed to be responsible for the evolution of the modern station wagon and the longest running SUV model, the Suburban. Another notable "father" to the SUV is the Jeep Wagon. While the Wagoneer was introduced as a model in 1963, it was the late 1940s that brought us Willy's Jeep Wagon. In fact an advertisement for the Willy's Wagon once called it a "utility vehicle" for the family. Suburban, the Beginning of an Era There were many makes and models that used the term "suburban." In fact, both "carryall" and "suburban" began being applied to automotive models in the early 1920's. The early SUV was meant to be practical and a means to carry all, whether it be people or cargo. Throughout the 20s, 30s and 40s, there were numerous automotive brands using these two words for

model names. But, it was Chevy's Suburban that carried the name into the 21st century. Rock and Roll Wagons The 50s brought a change to the suburbans and carryalls. Many models went to a car frame instead of the truck frames of their earlier predecessors. Dodge listed various wood-bodied station wagons as "Suburban" or "Suburban Carryall," and "Woody Wagons" were the cool thing to have even for the California surfers. How else would you carry the surfboards and enough gear for the weekend on the beach? Big engines and high performance were everywhere and the vehicles had plenty of room for the baby boomers to haul their large cargo of kids. Disco "dis" way, Wagons go "datta" way The 70's brought us disco, inflation, emissions control, high gas prices and the death of big engines and high performance. The small fuel-efficient Japanese cars and our nation's emissions policies added up to the next evolutionary step for the carryall. It came in like a 70s leisure suit; you know the one, the Chrysler mini-van. It was fuel efficient, front wheel drive and could carry a small family of big hair and bad 70'ish style clothes. But the mini-van saved Chrysler and helped the SUV begin its comeback to prominence.

Ronald Reagan's 80's brought us better fuel prices, lower interest rates and the need to feel sexier. Who wants to drive a mini-van that tells everyone we couldn't get the sports car because all of the kids and kids seats wouldn't fit in the latest model? With an SUV we could be the sporty, explorer, outdoor enthusiast "Looking for adventure with whatever comes my way, born to be wild" --Steppinwolf. The 80's and 90's brought back the truck frame to the SUV. Ford still has engines that need at least both hands and all fingers to count your cylinders (the 10 cylinder Excursion). They're affectionately called land barges. Some seem larger than small school buses; they're capable of carrying a soccer team in a single trip! But the government is getting involved and calling SUV's dangerous. The anti-SUV crowd can't be ignored either. Many claim that the SUV's are dangerous for other drivers who own smaller vehicles and that the SUV's consume too much fuel making them environmentally unfriendly. Ford actually has tried to make its SUV's play nice with other vehicles. For example, the 2000 Excursion comes equipped with a solid-steel bar (called the Blocker Beam) attached to the front of its lower frame. The device is designed to keep cars from sliding under the Excursion during a collision.

Everything Old Is New Again It works in fashion. Why not automobiles? As fuel prices begin to rise again and the continued pressure from governmental agencies about SUV safety take their toll, could we be seeing the beginning of the next evolution of the SUV? There is more than one manufacturer that has put their version of the SUV on a car chassis. Could this be the return of the station wagon? Only time will tell. This writer has sold his plaid pants and leisure suits, so unless it's a Woody Wagon, you won't be seeing hard green dollars from me at the local dealership. The SUV is dead. Long live the SUV!

INTRODUCTION
Indian car industry is crowded with a number of SUVs, the demand of which is gradually increasing among car consumers. SUVs have come a long way from the traditional Jeep to the stylish and high-tech Honda CRV, Tata safari, Mahindra Scorpio and ford endeavor. Sports Utility vehicles are rapidly capturing the market due to its multifarious use. Utility vehicles are found in two kinds: - SUV or Sports Utility Vehicles and MUV or Multi Utility Vehicles. Its spacious interior and sturdy exterior have made this vehicle one of the fastest selling vehicles of India. This is multi use vehicle to accommodate many passengers in one vehicle, especially while going for a long trip with a big family or with a folk of friends. Sporty attributes of this vehicle is not negligible when mentioning about its use. To name few SUV manufacturers of India- Fiat India, Ford Motors, Force Motors, General Motors, Hyundai Motors, Hindustan Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra, Nissan, Porsche, Tata Motors, Toyota motors etc. Popularity in SUV sales has increased in the last 25 years. So, this gives the reason to study the SUV segments in automobile to understand their market potential. The increase has been greatest amongst urban drivers in particular. To keep up with the increase in popularity, the producers of the SUV vehicles are now creating more

luxury vehicles. Consumers are looking for comfort in addition to performance. The design of the sport utility vehicle has been changed so that it offers drivers a more comfortable ride both on and off road. The sport utility vehicle is often referred to as another name with different parts of the world. For example, SUVs in England and throughout the United Kingdom are referred to as light trucks. However, in recent years the term sport utility vehicle has become more widespread throughout the world. In Australia, the term SUV carries a connotation of being a large vehicle, which is not desired by consumers. Instead of using the term of sport utility vehicle, consumers in Australia prefer to purchase a four by four vehicle. SUVs are designed to be four by four vehicles as well as off road vehicles.

MARKET POTENTIAL IN INDIA FOR SUVs A host of carmakers, from home-grown Maruti Udyog to the Indian arms of automobile biggies such as Ford, Hyundai and General Motors, are rushing cash in on the newfound craze for big-bodied and pricey sports utility vehicles. Till recently Indian roads experienced only one true sports utility vehicle (SUV) offering and that was Safari from the house of Tata Motors, the automobile division of India's diversified conglomerate Tata Engineering. But the current year alone has seen the launch of as many as half a dozen SUV models, helping the segment to post a growth of 50 percent over the previous year. The SUV is an all terrain automobile, designed as a sophisticated vehicle that can be used as an off-road mode of transportation for outdoor living conditions as well as on city roads.

S.W.O.T ANALYSIS FOR SUVS ACCORDING TO CURRENT MARKET: Strengths: Safety Style Power Suitable for long drives Comfort
Spacious

SWOTanalysis
S W O T

Weakness: Expensive Sedan is preferred more Occupies large space Difficult parking

Opportunities: Metropolitan cities & IT hubs. Income level is increasing day by day in India. Market of travel agencies is also increasing. People are getting more attracted toward SUVs. Threats: Sedan is preferred more to some segments. Women prefer SUVs less due to huge handling. Small car is gaining significance due to traffic problems. Competitors are increasing day bay day with latest technology.

S.W.O.T The market of India is very potential for SUV, we can see the strengths and opportunities of this segment (SUV) moreover, the Aligarh city also has a great potential for the consumers who can be attracted towards SUVs. It is found from a research that 15% of the total individuals in India, who have the annual income of more than 10 lakhs, live in Aligarh city. That means there is a lot of potential in Aligarh market for SUVs i.e. can be considered as the opportunities for the car manufacturer, who can further focus on coming up with more designs and more features that can attract the potential customers. It is also found that people now in India have started focusing on buying comfortable cars that can be used on highways which also provide safety to them like crumblesomes and air bags features, in a city like Aligarh where most of the people look up for those cars that can be used on Aligarh-Gudgaon express highway, for these purpose they mostly consider those heavy cars that have good grip and safety arrangements. Moreover, it is also found that there are many travel agencies that are using the SUVs as taxi cars and for that purpose Mahindra Scorpio and Toyota Innova are mostly used, that means more brands can come up with

those cars that are fuel efficient and economical that can be used as taxi cars. That simply means the market of SUV is very potential, as it can be seen on the roads of Aligarh that SUVs are used by many families and also by various travel agencies.

"Tata Safari has created a premium position for itself in the Indian market and is the highest selling SUV in the above-Rs. 7 lakhs category. The Safari brand grew by 18.5 per cent last fiscal and is growing by 18 per cent this year. It has always defined new standards for luxury and comfort for vehicles in its class. The Tata Safari - petrol is amongst the most powerful SUVs available in the country and offers unmatched content and specifications. It is a perfect blend of technology, performance and safety for its price level."

Mahindra Scorpio as its first Sports Utility Vehicle in India in 2002. This SUV has redefined the expectations for the design of SUVs with its sturdy looks and powerful performance, the sophisticated interior design adds to the further glory to the appearance. It is has won the hearts of millions with its eye-catching exterior design and powerful performance and has proven itself as one of the most preferred SUV in its class. Design and Interior Mahindra Scorpio has set a benchmark for the design of SUVs and instantly grabs everyone's attention when it hits the busy urban traffic. The latest versions have been fitted with smooth and shiny front grille and sparkling tail lamps cluster. The sporty and rugged look of the car is accomplished by the dual tone interior fitted with very comfortable fabric seats, individual armrests, AC vents for the rear side, mobile charging facility and small storage spaces. The car ensures comfort even during long journeys.

Engine The manufacturer has packed Mahindra Scorpion with powerful 2.6-liter turbo-charged diesel engine that delivers an output of 115bhp @ 3800rpm and torque of 28.3kgm @1700-2200 rpm. The vehicle can attain a speed of 0 to 60 in 9 seconds whereas the one fuelled by petrol can do the same in 8 seconds. Safety Scorpio has been loaded with an array of safety feature like collapsible steering column, intrusion beams, fire-retardant cushion, tubeless tyres and anti-lock braking system to ensure optimum safety of the occupants Future plans of Mahindra Mahindra, on the other hand have a strong presence in many countries in Africa and Italy. However, Mahindra is eyeing USA as their main market for its huge volumes. The US is top of Mahindras target list, company boss Dr Pawan Goenka told We want to be a global player in utility vehicles,. Mahindra are planning to launch a thoroughly reengineered version of their best selling Scorpio in the US market later this year. Presently, they will be assembling and selling through their network of 300 dealers. If volumes are good we will think about making cars in the US and then

we will be looking at Europe with a higher focus, said Goenka. We are also aware of Mahindras new world SUV that is Mahindras first monocoque design that is under development. It will sport a 4X4 and be the best Mahindra ever. It will be launched in 2011 and then taken to USA later. We never intend to be in passenger cars on our own, its too crowded and competive a market, he said. We feel Mahindra is in a far better position than Tata to sell its products abroad. Its styling is well received and not as odd looking as the Aria and the Manza that Tata make. Looking at the current situation, we bet our money on Mahindra. Good luck to both these manufacturers

Mahindra Scorpio Nothing Else Will Do

This SUV became an instant hit and created a wave of enthusiasm among young professionals. This car comes with a 2.6L turbocharged Inline-4 diesel engine that generates 115bhp. Scorpio Getaway is an addition to the line-up. Also in the list is VLX that comes with a 2.2L mHawk aluminium CRDe Inline-4 engine that churns out 120bhp. A big improvement over the old Scorpio, the new model feels more reassuring through the Elk test and even the Slalom. Car still rolls considerably and soft front suspension not cohesive with rear set-up. Its not the handler we hoped it would be and it slots in 3rd behind the Tavera. Slalom time: 11.4 seconds With the Scorpio, Mahindra joins a handful of other Indian companies which have designed and produced world class vehicles on their own. Its the car that was built around the customer. Before we even went to the design block we spoke to the customer. To create a car that takes ownership experience to a new high.
