Grade Book Setup: Weighting Assignment Types ________________________________________

Throughout the school year we have many ways of quantifying our students learning and effort including tests, quizzes, projects, homework, participation and much more. Many teachers choose to give varying weight to these different categories or assignment types in their Genesis Grade Book. These instructions will review the process for assigning weights, or weighting, your different assignment types. From your Grade Book page, go to the Grade Book link at the top of the page (1). When you hover over it, a menu will appear that includes Grade Book Setup (2). Click on Grade Book Setup.

First, lets look at the Class Name above your assignment weighting table (3). You will notice that there is a drop-down menu. Choose the class for which you would like to setup the weighted grades. We will be able to apply the settings to other classes in a moment.

Grade Book Setup: Weighting Assignment Types ________________________________________
If you have not previously altered your Grade Book setup, you will see that Grade Book has five default assignment types already pre-configured. You do have the flexibility to add additional assignment types. For information on doing this, please visit the tutorial on adding assignment types on Educational Technologys Grade Book Tutorials page (http://www.mpsaz.org/gradebook). The five default assignment types for District Grade Books are: Homework, Quiz, Test, Assignment and Project. They each have a default weight of zero (4). You will notice that this teacher has added two of their own assignment types: Participation and Class/Group Work. (If you were going to operate your grade book on a pure point system and not weight categories, you would leave the weight values at zero.)

To weight the assignment types, place the desired percentage weight in the blank next to the corresponding type in the Weight column(5). As you do this, you will notice that a running total will show up to the right of your table (6). If there is an assignment type listed that you do not plan to use, simply leave it as zero. Once we are done and our remaining weight shows 0%, we will apply these changes to other classes that this teacher teaches. You will notice that there are check boxes under the title Also apply to (7). We are going to put a check in the check box next to each class that will use this same weighting system.

After setting up the weights and identifying to which classes we would like them applied we simply click on Update (8) and Grade Book will now distribute scores, and their weight, appropriately.
