    New Clairvaux Vineyard, the monks of
    the Abbey of New Clairvaux and hundreds of
    wine enthusiasts will gather on Friday, Au-
    gust 5th at 5:30 p.m. to take part in the annual
    Blessing of the Grapes harvest celebration.
    The event is located at the Abbeys St. James
    Vineyard (26240 7th Street in Vina) and is
    free and open to the public.
    The ceremony begins with a captivating
    procession of the monasterys white-robed
    monks chanting and singing through the
    vineyard. Abbot Paul Mark Schwan will then
    conduct the centuries-old European tradition
    where workers and vineyards are blessed to
    ensure a robust harvest and winemaking sea-
    son. The ceremony starts promptly and lasts
    about 15 minutes.
    Winery tours, barrel tastings, and compli-
    mentary wine sampling will follow the cer-
    emony.
    This years harvest promises to be our
    largest and most fruitful ever, says Aimee
    Sunseri, a fifth generation winemaker who
    crafts the vineyards premium wines. Weve
    had a wet year and late summer, but our
    grapes held strong and were looking forward
    to another great year of wine, she adds.
    New Clairvaux Vineyard is located in
    Vina, California, about 20 miles north of
    Chico or 20 miles south of Red Bluff on Cal-
    ifornia Highway 99. It is two hours north of
    Blessing of the Grapes, August 5
    Sacramento and one hour south of Redding
    between Interstate 5 and California Highway
    99. The winerys tasting room is open daily
    from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. with complimentary

    About New Clairvaux Vineyard
    They Abbey of New Clairvaux is the only
    Trappist-Cistercian Monastery in the Ameri-
    cas to grow, make and bottle its own wine.
    The winery is situated on what was once Le-
    land Stanfords Great Vina Ranch, reputedly
    the largest winery in the world in 1890.The
    Abbey purchased the land for a new mon-
    astery in 1955; dairy and orchard farming
    served as their main source of support in the
    early years.
    In 2000, the monks decided to return to
    their historic European roots in viticulture
    and winemaking. Working with the Sunseri
    wine family, they planted two vineyards,
    which produced the first New Clairvaux
    Vineyard wines in 2003. Today, New Clair-
    vaux Winerys production has increased
    nearly fourfold, international awards have
    been bestowed, and vineyard acreage con-
    tinues to increase. The dedicated labor of
    theseTrappist monks combined with Aimee
    Sunseris winemaking skill are helping re-
    store Vinas and the monasterys legacy in
    the winemaking world.

    County Fair
    New for 2011, Butte Countys Got Tal-
    ent. This years competition is opened up
    to soloist, duets, quartets, magicians, ven-
    triloquists, jugglers and much more!
    The preliminary rounds will be held
    on opening night of the fair, Thursday,
    August 25th and all competitors will com-
    pete. From this performance the pool of
    contestants will be cut to twelve and they
    will compete Friday night where elimina-
    tions will take place. Only the three high-
    est contestants from each age group will be
    asked to perform for top honors on Satur-
    day, August 27th in Goldies. The winners
    will then be asked to come back on Satur-
    day at 9 pm for a performance to be held
    on Courtyard Stage.
    Talent Contest at Butte County Fair
    Contestants will be split into four cat-
    egories children 6 and under, 7 to 12, 13 to
    17 and 18 and over. Any contestant under
    the age of 18 must have a parent with them
    to register and sign a release form. Due
    to limited stage area no acrobats or danc-
    ers. No bands due to the time needed to
    set-up. Entry fee is $10.00 and advanced
    registration is required by August 19th.
    Contestants will be judged on talent, stage
    presence and entertainment appeal. For a

    I can always tell when it is close
    to a new school year beginning by
    all of the school supplies that show
    up in the stores. Gone is the sum-
    mer fun stuff like goggles, squirt
    toys and inatable balls. In their
    place are pencils, erasers and back-
    packs of every size and color. It re-
    minds me of the commercial where
    the mom is riding on the shop-
    ping cart with great joy down the
    aisles as she is shopping for back
    to school supplies. I think ALL
    moms can relate!
    So did I achieve all my summer
    dreams and plans? Did I stick to a
    schedule for the kids of chore rou-
    tines and summer schoolwork? I
    would have to say that overall we
    did pretty well, but there were still
    plenty of late nights and even later
    mornings. To be a kid again and
    sleep till 11:00 a.m.! As the rst
    day of school creeps up on the cal-
    endar, I am determined to start this
    year with a plan.
    1. Get those backpacks ready!
    Pick a spot that all backpacks will
    be placed that makes them easy to
    grab when leaving in the morning.
    Stock them with essential supplies
    like hand sanitizer, tissue, pencils,
    notebooks, and whatever else your
    student may need to make their
    excuses for not doing homework
    pretty much useless.
    2. Shop for lunch supplies at the
    beginning of the week. Use bag-
    gies to individually bag chips, trail
    mix or any other snack items for
    the week. Store all of them in one
    place that is the designated lunch
    area. Keep your baggies, snacks
    and lunch bags together to make
    packing a breeze. If your child pre-
    fers hot lunches, either prepay for
    the month or the week to avoid the
    daily search for lunch money.
    3. Set up a homework area in the
    house. Decide where your children
    will do their homework and make
    sure to have all supplies needed.
    This could be a space in the dining
    room, a desk in their room, or any
    spot that is quiet and calm.
    4. Make a spot for all incoming
    school papers, calendars or any slips
    that need parent signatures. Your
    child should know where this spot
    is and automatically empty their
    backpack as soon as they get home.
    Your job will be to sign whatever
    needs to be returned and get it back
    into their backpack. Does this al-
    ways work? Most moms would
    say NO but its worth a try!
    5. Have your kids pick out
    their clothes for the week. This is
    a great time saver in the mornings!
    My daughter even likes to group an
    outt together including accesso-
    ries like necklaces or scarves and
    hangs them in the closet. It sure
    beats running around trying to g-
    ure out an outt when you are run-
    ning late.
    I still remember the excitement
    of starting the rst day of school,
    picking out the perfect clothes and
    seeing all of your friends again.
    As long as my kids get a good
    nights sleep and a great breakfast,
    then everything else will fall into
    place. The best part of it all? A
    quiet house by 8:20 a.m.! Back to
    school RULES!
