Managers Corner
Hope youre having a great summer so far. With the new air conditioning system in most of the building, its been quite comfortable. If youre having problems or have questions about it, please let us know. It looks like were missing some grocery carts. Im fairly certain that they wouldnt make a great piece of furniture, but if you have any around, we need them back. Theyre important for helping deliver the food from the Mobile Food Pantry for those who get the food delivered to them. Thanks in advance. Do you know someone who would like to become a resident at Solar? Were now taking applications for our waiting list. The sooner they get on the list, the sooner they will be considered for an apartment. Let them know. August 1st is the date that the insulation was finally completed on the 4th floor. We do appreciate all of the patience that the residents have shown to the workers and the progress of the work. Its finally over. Great job, everyone, and see you next month! Perla Orona

From the Editor

We made it to August and only another month and a half before it starts getting cool again, or so we hope. And then winter. Brrrr. Were not happy when its hot nor happy when its cold. We just need to order up some 60s and 70s temps and keep em that way! Of course, if that were to happen, it would be the largest city in the United States! So, we just have to enjoy our six months of great weather and put up with a little heat and cold. The feedback was really appreciated when I saw some of you at both the Mobile Food Pantry (yep, I am the Breadman) and the pancake brunch. And used some of your ideas for the newsletter, too! We have an ad on page 4 of the newsletter this month. Call Joann to make arrangements to have your hair styling done here! Facebook. Yep, we now have an official site on Facebook. You mean you dont know what that is? First, for those of you who do, just do a search for Solar Villa News from Facebook and itll pop right up. Press the Like button near the top and youll be an official member. You can share all kinds of news and info with others on the page. And as its popularity grows, well include more and more up-to-date info, plus you can share things that may actually go in the printed newsletter. Do a search for Brentwood Gardens Newsletter and youll find something similar. If you have no idea what Facebook, or barely even know what E-mail is, sign up for a class that Ill be giving just before the Mobile Food Pantry on the 11th. I will help you set up an email address on Google, create a Facebook account if you want one, and give a few hints and tips to put it all together. Look forward to seeing you there! Gil

MOBILE FOOD PANTRY Yes, it time already - to be exact, on August 11th. I know that many of you have been wondering why we have not been getting any meat items for the last pantries so I wanted to let you know that I have spoken to the powers that be about this and they told me that many places are no longer receiving meat items, as well. All the other items still seem to be good food items so it is still a worthwhile program to bring to the community. LUNCH BUNCH "BRUNCH" I just want to thank all the folks who came out to enjoy the pancake breakfast that was held on July 21st. It was a great success and of course, we had some pretty great chefs as well (thats why the pancakes were better than IHOP; I think so anyway!). Thank you to Gil Davis, Gay Brown, and Jeff Teitler, our chefs, for their efforts in making it all happen! We had such a great time that we are thinking already of when we will do this again. Lunch Bunch is a great way to sit and enjoy a meal and socialize with one another and we will be starting this up again in September so watch your newsletter for the next date. (Patsy also got to cook a bit! -Gil-) MY SCHEDULE August is usually a month of conferences for me and so this year I do have two conferences that I must attend in August. Because of that, I will be out of the office on Wednesday, August 24th, and during the week beginning August 29th. I will have my cell phones with me, but since I am in classes all day I might not be able to get back with you in a timely manner. If you need assistance with anything you may leave a written note under my door. COMPUTER ASSISTANCE We have a resident at Brentwood who is a whiz at computers and how to use them. Of course, that is Gil Davis, and is the editor of the newsletter, as well. I am amazed at the knowledge he

possesses about computers. He was willing to conduct a short class for those who would like to learn to access information on the Internet, set up an email or Facebook account, or answer any other questions about purchasing a computer for your home. This will be held on Aug. 11th from 12:30 - 1:30 pm in my office. I will be posting some sign up sheets in the office so you can sign up for a 30 minute "one-on-one" training class. The new computers in my office are user-friendly and have large screens and largeletter keyboards. BIRTHDAY PARTIES Its something that was done a few years back and I like to try it again. I have not set up a date yet, but will soon. The supplier of the cake will be Heritage Home Healthcare and Hospice, and of course they will be letting you know of their services. You are under no obligation to sign up, but the cake is for everyone to enjoy!! More information will be following. YARD SALE Still have odds and ends to sell? Friday, August 5th will be the next day to set up your items to sell in the Rec Room. Start whenever you like, but you must starting cleaning up by 4pm. We also need a volunteer to make signs and put them in appropriate places so that the public can come check out the sale as well. GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP Micky Hughes in Apt. 319 has had training in conducting these support groups so we are lucky that she is here to do this for us. I think they are worthwhile not only if you have experienced the loss of a loved one, but also if there is something in your life that you can no longer do because of health limitations. Mickys classes are held every 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 2pm. Micky also has calendars to hand out to attendees. There will be no support group meeting on Tuesday, August 9th, but the group will resume its regular schedule on August 23rd.

August 3rd is National Watermelon Day and in honor of that tasty fruit, this may help you pick out the perfect specimen. When you break open your melon, you shouldnt be disappointed if you follow these tips. First, look beyond its appearance. Unlike some fruit, you cant rely on your sense of sight to determine if youre about to buy a nice, ripe, juicy watermelon. You also have to call on your sense of sound and your sense of smell. Watermelons, no matter what variety, have a particular sound when you knock on them. A ripe watermelon will give you a thud sound when you knock on it with your knuckles. Hold the watermelon close to your ear by cradling it in one arm, then knock on it with your opposite hand; like youre knocking on a door. You should hear a dull sound, not a high ringing sound. Do this to several watermelons until you get the sound that doesnt resonate a lot; it sort of disappears into the watermelon. This may not make any sense until you actually thump a few. A ripe watermelon has a very distinctive scent. After you choose your melon with the right sound, you need to use your sense of smell to finalize the deal. Take your watermelon away from the bin so your nose isnt confused by the scent of the other melons. Get your nose close to its end and sniff. You should get a delicious watermelon scent. If youve smelled too many, walk over to the coffee aisle and do the old wine tasting trick. Clear your nostrils with a whiff of coffee scent, wait a minute, then sniff your watermelon once again. Now that you know how to tell if a watermelon is ripe, dive right into that beautiful pile at your grocery store or farmers market, bring it home, and enjoy!

Watermelon Salad
Ingredients 2 small watermelons 1 (15 ounce) can canned diced pineapple (drained) 1 pound seedless grapes 2 apples - peeled, cored and chopped 2 bananas, cut into bitesized pieces Directions Cut each watermelon in half lengthwise. Hollow out the insides using a melon baller, reserving

rind for later use. Drain pineapple, and discard juice. Cut apples in half, remove cores, and cut into bite sized pieces. Peel banana, and slice in to bite sized pieces. Rinse grapes under cold running water, and pat dry. In a bowl, toss together the watermelon balls, pineapple, apple, banana chunks, and grapes. Divide fruit salad among the 4 reserved watermelon "bowls," and serve. Feel free to experiment and add other summer fruits like strawberries and blueberries, or even top it with ice cream!

Traveling With Your Pet When possible, prepare your pet by gradually exposing it to elements or sequences of the trip and then practice departures. If your pet is not used to traveling, brief frequent trips will help acclimate your pet. As long as your pet's basic comforts are attended to, the trip should go well. For short trips, remove food at least two hours before starting a trip. For longer trips, remove food several hours before the trip. You may feed your pet after the trip. Offer small amounts of water until an hour before travel. Depending on the length of the trip, water bowls can be left in the carrier or not. Play with your pet or engage it in some kind of positive interaction before you leave home. If your pet is well exercised before it is confined, it will be more comfortable. Make sure your dog has a long walk or your cat has enough time to use the litter before its confinement. Most pets become adjusted to travel with frequent travel opportunities. They may feel more secure if they are confined to a sturdy and wellventilated carrier. Cats and small or medium dogs may learn to travel in pet carriers designed for travel. Large dogs, for example, may be confined behind special gates that section off the back of a motor vehicle. Have your pet's general health evaluated by a veterinarian well in advance of an anticipated trip, not at the last minute. Vaccinations should be updated. If you are going overseas, your veterinarian may be able to advise you regarding reports of pet health problems prevalent at your destination and check the embassy or consulate for information on any documents or special vaccinations that your pet will require. Have these with you at the veterinary appointment since a signature may be required to clear your pet's health status for customs officials. If you are traveling within the USA, ask your vet if there are any diseases in the area you will

visit that are a threat to your pet's health. When you return, take in a stool sample for analyses in case your pet has acquired any intestinal or other parasites. Fear and anxiety during travel Regardless of the mode of transportation, several behavior problems may arise because of fear. Fear may cause hyperexcitability and agitation, hyperventilation, vocalization, attempts to escape or hide, aggressiveness, nausea, vomiting, defecation and urination. Destruction to the interior of your car or pet carrier may indicate fear or anxiety, particularly if the pet is isolated from you. Fearful responses to travel may worsen or remain relatively constant over time. Your pet may become fearful before a trip if it learns to recognize signs of impending departures or can even show effects after travel. Sedatives and tranquilizers Tranquilizers or sedatives intended to ease your pet's fear should be reserved for pets that suffer from extreme fear or anxiety during travel, and should only be used at your veterinarian's recommendation. Many times a simple medication for nausea or anxiety is all that is required.
