AMALGAMATION GROUP MEETING
A group of concerned Cabonne
Council residents met yesterday to
discuss a proposal being put to
the Mi ni ster f or Local
Government to amalgamate part
of Cabonne LGA with Orange City
Council.
The proposal is that about one
third of Cabonne Council local
government area be incorporated
into Orange City Council.
It is extremely important, in our
view, that Cabonne residents be
i nformed of the f acts,
consequences and implications of
such a proposal. Therefore, it has
been decided to hold an open
meeting at:

CABONNE MAYOR HEARTENED BY MESSAGES
OF SUPPORT
Cabonne Mayor Bob Dowling has been
heartened by an increasing amount of
support from ratepayers opposed to the
amalgamation of a large slice of the Shire
with Orange City.
Along with fellow Councillors, I have
been receiving many letters, emails and
phone calls from residents, many from the
Shires eastern area, who dont want to
see Cabonne broken up, Cr Dowling said.
A group of ratepayers is asking the NSW
Boundaries Commission to amalgamate
an area that could be more than a quarter
of the area of Cabonne Shire with Orange.
The Mayor said he understood residents
were organising counter petitions
throughout the Shire urging NSW Local
Government Minister Don Page to reject
the move.
Many people have been contacting me
asking to sign these petitions, he said.
I expect them to be forwarded to the
Minister in coming weeks.
Cr Dowling said many people were sur-
prised to learn their properties may be
included in the breakaway area being pro-
posed by the eastern residents group.
Boundaries marked on a sketchy map
given to Council indicate that as many as
a third of Cabonne residents could be
included in the area, he said.
The area in question is much larger just
an eastern adjustment, it extends north
to Wellington Shire, south to Blayney
Shire and appears to go up to 25 kilome-
tres or more west of Orange in places.
Ive been contacted by a number of rate-
payers who were unaware they could be
affected and now are wanting to voice
their opposition.
Cr Dowling said the number of letters and
phone calls had accelerated during the
past fortnight.
I intend to reply to all those who have
written to me, however that will be a big
task considering the amount of corre-
spondence I have been receiving, he said.

POETRY CONTEST FOR FOLK @ TASTE
The great thing about the folk scene is
that it is one of the few musical styles
where spoken word is performed along-
side musical acts.
We have decided to celebrate this part
of the folk scene this month in
"folk@canowindra".
As well as four guest poets, who be-
tween them cover a wide range of poetic
styles; we are hosting a poetry contest.
There will be 3
sections: adult original poetry, adult per-
formance of other's poems, and
under-18 original poetry. Entry to these
sections is quite limited (because of time
constraints on the night); so all entrants
must contact Nerida Cuddy (via

as possible in order to register their
poem.

To the editor...
After reading letter to the Editor July 6th
& 13th I feel prompted to express my
opinion on the plain packaging of
cigarettes. Before I go any further I
would like to inform you I am an
ex-smoker and have not smoked for the
last 22 years.
Whilst I am very anti smoking I do not
believe plain packaging will contribute to
people not taking up the habit, even to
the point of it being made illegal, it will
not stop them. Drugs are illegal and
come in plain packaging, but we still have
a huge drug problem and
undesirable people making a living from
it.
Whatever happened to people being
responsible for their own actions?
Taking everything off the shelf out of sight
will not help our young; in contrast if you
are not allowed to have it you want it.
Education is the answer and this begins
at home with parental guidance and
example, which unfortunately in our
society is now very rare.

BREAK IN AT PUBLIC SCHOOL
Unfortunately the Canowindra Public School
had a break in on the first weekend of the
holidays, between Friday night and Sunday
morning. Items stolen were a large plasma
TV, computers and all the laptops, as well as
some other small items. Damage was done
to doorways and doors. The computers and
laptops are only of use in the school
situation and are worth nothing. However,
many of the programs on them are
specifically for our children with additional
needs and there loss is a real nuisance. All
items will be replaced through insurance, but
it is annoying that we have such an
inconvenience to the school routines.
If you saw anybody in the school grounds or
know anything about the break-in, pleased

A conversation that not too long ago was taboo
within our community is being brought to the
forefront particularly in the Dubbo electorate. In
recent times the issue and any conversation
about mental illness was one that would see
people take a huge side step to avoid. It is such
a difficult issue to comprehend when much
about mental health and other like conditions
are within their very nature considered irrational
behaviours trying to be understood by a
considered rational mind.
Throughout my career mental health issues
have really been at the forefront of the work I
have undertaken, both in the field as a police
officer, within my responsibilities of human
resource management in police and even on a
personal note. I congratulate those individuals
and organisations who have courageously
brought this issue into the public domain,
people like Winston Churchill, political leaders
and high profile sportspeople and key
organisations like Black Dog and Beyond Blue.
With their help mental health issues are no
longer like a pariah, and those charged with
providing assistance for people suffering such
health concerns can now access and receive
the support services they need.
One of the biggest challenges I faced while
policing at a street level was the crossover of
people who suffered from mental health
problems who ended up in the judicial system.
COPS are not diagnostically trained and
receive little in the way of training and educa-
tion in how to detect or handle people suffering.
This situation has been on the constant
improve over time and a cultural shift is
recognising and providing support for police
who suffered from related illnesses as well. We
are not there yet but we are on the right track.
Recently in town was the Hon. Kevin
Humphries, Minister for Mental Health, Healthy
Lifestyles and Western NSW who has been
given the first Ministry ever dedicated to this
significant subject matter. One of his first
initiatives is to establish a NSW Mental Health
Commission a vitally important opportunity for
the Government to support those suffering,
those carers and service providers to have their
say on the future provision of mental health
services in NSW. This initiative is a refreshing
approach and coincides with long overdue
national initiatives along this vein, so that
together hopefully we can achieve an improved
and sustained management approach that
can be achieved in the provision of mental
health services and support. As your local
member I was delighted that Kevin chose
Dubbo to commence the first of the consulta-
tion process in order to build the best Mental
Health Commission possible. This process
allowspeople from across the sector to pro-
vide honest open and frank input into the
challenges and roadblocks within the current
system that the Commission needs to over-
come. Soon I will also have the opportunity to
host a forum to allow for the broader commu-
nity to contribute to the Commission's Task-
force so that everyone will get the opportunity
to have their say.
I know through my own personal experience,
that my cup runneth over some years ago.
For me while I 'danced with shadows and ran
from grey skies' I came from a changing po-
licing culture that when I started 'Big boys
don't cry' and 'COPS are bullet proof' atti-
tudes existed. I dealt with my issues like
most police did dealing with an assault on my
life, the cradling of children lost to their par-
ents and all those horrific jobs a policing ca-
reer brings and by rotten luck came my way
far too often, by retreating to the age old rem-
edy of alcohol and emotionally withdrawing
from my family, going into my shell and seek-
ing a cavalier mind set of welcoming any new
threat that presented danger to myself.
Thankfully for me before my family or I were
destroyed, attitudes shifted considerably to-
wards a culture where support to seek help
was encouraged. It was also through the love
and support of my family, my colleagues and
in particular team members from whom I
didn't hide my challenge that helped me over-
come and survive a significant period in my
life. I was lucky that I was able to access the
support I needed and like many survivors
have found that a battle with mental health
issues doesn't have to be terminal, nor a
lifelong proposition, there can be outcomes
of survival and better days ahead, I look for-
ward to contributing as your Local Member in
our Governments attempts to achieve these
very outcomes for many more. We are very
lucky here in our electorate to have wonder-
ful organisations that do so much to support
those in need. My visit recently with the Min-
ister to NALAG centre was a key reminder
that there is still much to do, but at least we
can now openly have the conversation.

1kg pumpkin, peeled, deseeded, cubed
800g carrots, peeled, cubed
1/4 cup olive oil
2 brown onions, halved, thinly sliced
2 garlic cloves, crushed
1 tbs mustard seeds
2 tsp ground coriander
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp ground cardamom
1/4 tsp chilli powder (optional)
4 cups salt-reduced vegetable stock
2 cups water
Natural yoghurt, to serve
Preheat oven to 210C. Place pumpkin
and carrot in large baking tray, drizzle over
2 tbsp of oil, toss to coat. Roast for 30-35
minutes or until golden and tender.
Heat the remaining oil in a large saucepan
over medium heat. Add the onion, season
with salt, reduce heat to low. Cook, stirring
often, for 20 minutes or until soft. Add gar-
lic, mustard seeds, coriander, cumin, tur-
meric, cardamom & chilli powder. Cook,
stirring, for 2 minutes or until aromatic &
the mustard seeds start to pop.
Add the pumpkin, carrot, stock & water,
increase heat to medium, cover and bring
to the boil. Reduce heat to low, cook cov-
ered for 15 minutes. Uncover. Set aside
for 15 minutes to cool slightly.
Using a stick blender blend until smooth.
Place over low heat and cook, stirring for
4 minutes or until heated through. Ladle
into serving bowls, top with a dollop of
yoghurt & stir to create a swirled effect.

Prospective parents of year seven 2012
and any other interested parents are
invited to attend an open morning to
familiarise themselves with Canowindra
High School. This will be held on Tuesday
26 July at 10am commencing with
morning tea in the Staff Common Room.
There will be a short talk from some of the
staff, followed by a tour of the school. It

JOHN COBB'S VISIT
After visiting Indonesia's feedlots and
abattoirs earlier this month, John Cobb
was in town today meeting with locals
and business owners to find some grass
roots issues.
John stated that one local issue stood out
more than others, "I would have to say
about 98% of Cabonne residents are
against any council amalgamation and are
even quite angry about it."
John is pleasantly surprised to see the
confidence and growth in essential
business services and retail, although he
understands that discretionary expendi-
ture is more at risk, where households are
less likely to purchase non essential items
at the moment.
John was rather impressed with one local
business, Lucerne Foods Parts &
Machinery, that is doing so well that they
are increasing their employee numbers,
and their recent trip overseas to get
hands on experience in different farming
and maintenance techniques.
"The area between Canowindra, Molong
and Orange is some of the best farming
country in Australia, however further out
west they desperately need more rain."
On the issue of the ban of live cattle ex-
port to Indonesia, John advised that dur-
ing his trip he visited feedlots that were as
good, if not better, than the standard of
similar set ups here in Australia.
The ban is already having a detrimental
effect on a whole range of Australians
who make their living from jobs associ-
ated with the live export trade. Road train
drivers, mechanics, helicopter pilots. All
out of work and onto the dole.

TIGRESS TAG TEAM
On Saturday the Canowindra Tigresses travelled
to Parkes to compete in the Western Region
league tag knockout. The day involved teams
from Group 10, Group 11 and Woodbridge
Cup. Canowindras first game was against
Bathursts St Pats with them coming out strong
at the Canowindra defence, forcing mistakes
and pressuring passes. Tigresses were lucky to
end in a two all draw after being careless with
their ball skills.
In their second game they played Eugowra
Geagles. This was a tit for tat match with
Eugowra taking out eventual victory 3-2. Again
the girls didnt play their best and full credit to
the Geagles for a great match.
On a for and against count back the Tigresses
made the semis playing against Parkes. Canow-
indra was out to reclaim their form and were
hungry for a win and at full time won 4-2. This
put the Tigresses into the grand final against
Condobolin.
Feeling good after their win the girls went out
and took care of business coming away victors
4-2 making them the champions of the day.
Tara Grant received Canowindras Best and
Fairest for the day and Maddie Vitnell was top
try scorer. Other try scores were Teiya Thorn-
berry, Jess D, Nicole Stevenson, Tara Grant and
Alicia Earsman. All the girls played hard and
had a great day. They would like to thank
Parkes for holding the event and making the
day possible, Mick Vitnell for coaching, Chubbs
and Jimmy for running the water, and our sup-
porters for cheering us on.
Don't forget the Tigers Reunion Western Re-
gion Caltex knockout Champions of 1971 din-
ner this Saturday night, details below with the
contact numbers for tickets.
The Youth League side run on against Molong
at 12:45, the Tigresses take on the Bullettes at

PINK PYTHON PLAYERS
On Saturday the Canowindra Pythons hosted
a McGrath Foundation day in conjunction with
our Ladies day. The day was a huge success.
We were hoping to raise $5,000 but near dou-
bled that with approximately $9,500 profit
raised. This was a huge bonus with the ladies
lunch all booked out and with the auction of
the jumpers exceeding expectations, thanks
to Matt Coady for auctioning, plus a big
THANK YOU to all that donated on the
day.
Thank you to all of the ladies that attended
the fundraiser lunch and the rest of the
Ladies Day festivities. Special thanks to the
ladies that worked tirelessly on the lunch -

On the game side of things the Pythons
played host to the CSU Aggies. With the
ladder all but fixed in with only two comp
games to go this was really a trial match for
both teams who seem likely to meet each
other in the first week of the semi's.
Aggies started the better of both teams and
soon put 2 tries on the pythons. though the
boys in pink soon hit back with Aaron Woolley
crossing and Clint Oborn also scoring a try
before half time to level things out going into
the break.
The start of the second half belonged to
Canowindra with the boys going over for 4
tries to take a comfortable lead of 36-14.
Though the boys seemed to think it was to
comfortable of a lead and let the Aggies come
back to with in 1 point of winning the game
though the Pythons managed to scrape home
with the win after a technical issue was sorted
out after some bookkeeping.
Points for the day went to Ronnie Lawrence
got 3, Tom Abbott 2, and 1 each to Lachie
Noble and Dan Bowd. Players' player went to
Lochie Noble. This weekend the boys head to
West Wylong on the first bus trip for the year.
