to Glen Forbes-Loch-Korumburra (meeting at the Hotspot Pizza Shack). They will park opposite us in the forecourt of the local tyre service (the owners family have also been touched by cancer) and displayed there until they all head off later in the afternoon. This fundraiser has usually some aims in mind for the funds raised. While here last year we held a surprise birthday party for a local girl who has had the palate of her mouth removed due to cancer, very lucky to still be with us as this is a very rare cancer, which was only found after her being hit in the face by ball a while back. Her birthday falls on this Daffodil Day weekend, so the members of the VMCI dressed in fancy dress and she loved it..so did they. We donate a portion of the sale of each pizza from the day to the cancer council. More details please call Alan Bowden 0401 062 182.

Port Franklin then and now

The Hotspot /Pizza Shack, together with the Victoria Mini Club Inc. are holding a fundraiser on Sunday 28th August, a couple of days following Daffodil Day. A cruise in their minis is usually organised from Melbourne (to be announced) and ending in Tooradin. Lunch orders of pizzas are rung through lto the pizza shop where they enjoy some well-earned food. This is then followed by a tour of the back roads to Korumburra. This Daffodil Day they will be meeting with some motorcycles and sidecars from another club at the Lang Lang service station at 11am, where they will then cruise

Fishing commenced at Bowen (Port Franklin) in the 1870s, quietly and unheralded, as the wealth of Corner Inlets piscatorial resources was discovered. The early fishermen were men from all walks of life and different nationalities who were attracted to the newfound safe anchorage on the Franklin River to eke out a living by fishing. Some had already tried prospecting for gold, enticed to the goldfields of Victoria without financial reward; some had tried farming but, not being suited, turned their resources to the profession of fishing. Amongst the early fishermen were a number of men who had come from a family background of fishing, such as the Scandinavians or those of English descent who had already fished at other places, such as Tooradin on Westernport Bay. When the economic depression of the 1890s was severe enough to force people to seek ways of living outside of Melbourne, many families looked to newly-discovered ports along the coastline where they could find a place to live and obtain work on the land, or find their way into the fishing industry. At Port Franklin the pioneer fishermen became important providers of fish for a growing population, and were able to access consistently good quantities of the most popular species such as flounder, whiting, garfish and flathead. The population of the small fishing community continued to grow in the early 1900s from the beginning of a settlement of tents and a few houses in the 1870s into a small closely-knit village as more fishing families arrived in the 1880s, even though there was only one general store, no church, no hotel and no school to service the residents. In the days before radio, telephone or electricity it was a somewhat isolated community. The only access to the outside world was through the occasional newspaper or letters from relatives residing in larger towns or cities.............

Gippsland Tourism gets Digital

Simply surfing the net is a thing of the past. Now its crowd-sourcing, hashtags, tweets-per-second and influence scores. Gippsland tourism businesses have the opportunity to sharpen their eMarketing skills at a series of workshops to be held across Gippsland during August. The Internet is the primary tool that consumers are using to research their next holiday. Societys shift to a digital economy means big changes for tourism operators and new ways that they can communicate with potential visitors. Created specifically for tourism operators in Gippsland, digital marketing corporate trainer Russell Easther will present the hands-on, DIY workshops. Topics include digital strategies, Google, search engine optimisation, social media and email marketing. The eMarketing workshops are part of Destination Gippslands Tourism Excellence program. Destination Gippsland Chief Executive, Terry Robinson said, eMarketing is the topic most requested by the tourism industry for training. Its important as an industry to embrace digital trends as they bring about new opportunities to attract visitors to Gippsland. From as little as $100 for the full day, tourism businesses can attend the workshop which is highly subsidised by Destination Gippsland. The six workshops are offered at Cowes, Leongatha, Warragul, Yallourn, Fulham and Bairnsdale. Places are strictly limited. Further details at www. destinationgippsland.com.au.

Appearing in William the Conquerors Domesday Book of 1086, this is an ancient town. From 1764, a canal linked Godalming to Guildford and from there to the River Thames and London. Another canal linked the River Wey with the Arun River. Thus it was possible to travel by boat from London through Guildford to Littlehampton on the south coast of England. The wharfing business of Sam Richardson Snr was likely associated with these canals. By 1851, Godalming was a successful town of over 6,500 people with a train line connecting through to London having been opened in 1849 and the line to Portsmouth underway. The railway brought huge changes, one being the undermining of canal transport and the lives of those who worked on the riverboats. Matilda Richardson wrote verse, much of it retained by her descendents in Orbost, Australia. 3 Her poetry, along with long letters to her sons, Sam in Australia and Charles in America, show a sensitive, intelligent woman who was interested in world events. Among her sonnets is one to the Great Eastern Steamship (the worlds largest paddle steamer, launched 1858), and another on the Death of the Duke of Wellington (1852). In essence, the decision to migrate is made by the desire of people to better themselves and with the knowledge that their homeland does not offer these opportunities. In the 19th Century, one of Britains biggest exports was its people. Also, the Australian colonies were developing as options for settlement rather than just as places to put convicts..........

Dating back over 300 million years, ancient rivers flowing and seeping through limestone rock formed the Caves. Europeans first explored them in the early 1900s. The Fairy Cave presents a visual

tapestry of rich limestone shapes and Royal Cave is noted for the calcite rimmed pools. The Caves are fully lit with walkways. Guided tours are conducted daily in both. Tours to wild caves can also be arranged for smal groups.

Looking forward to the NEW revamped State Coal Mine where you can step back in timeopen now but launching soon.

Explore Bass Coast and Wonthaggi

In its heyday, the State Coal Mine was a bustling network of tunnels, filled with men and pit ponies, dust and dim lights. Deep below the surface, miners toiled to dig the valuable black coal which powered Victorias railway network. The mine was Wonthaggis life-blood, and was active from 1909 to 1968. A visit to the State Coal Mine at Wonthaggi is a journey back to the difficult working conditions of mining days past. Preserved by Parks Victoria for future generations, this original mine site gives visitors an understanding of the life of a miner seventy years ago.

Underground Tours
This authentic mine gives visitors the opportunity to experience the primitive conditions of black coal mining in Victoria during the 1900s. The mine remains just as it was in its working days. Tools and equipment are still in place, as if the miners have just walked away. Seams of 130 million year old coal glisten under dim lighting, while empty skips stand idle to rust in the silent tunnels. All thats missing are the men and pit-ponies. But, if you stand still you can almost hear the clatter of horse shoes on steel rails, rumbling skips and the tapping of pick on coal.

Numerous Agricultural Shows around the country have a section for Alpaca Showing. There are also stand alone Alpaca Shows run by the different Regions of the Australian alpaca Association (AAA). The Eastern Region of the AAA holds a Show at Lardner Park each August and youll also see judging at the Sale Show in November. For the novice, Showing involves halter training the alpaca so he/she can be lead around a ring then lined up with other alpacas in his/her class. The judge looks at the conformation of the animal as it is being paraded then goes to each individual alpaca and has a good look at the fleece. Alpacas at these Shows

must be registered with the AAA and the owners a member of the AAA to be eligible to enter. Alpaca Classes are in age, gender and colour classes, the youngest being 6-12 months. The judges are accreditated AAA trained judges. Place ribbons are awarded in each class with Champion and Reserve Champion awarded for each gender/ age section. At the end a Supreme Champion of the Show is awarded to one of the Champions. Some Shows also award Best of each Colour

following the Supreme Championship. There are often Junior and Senior Handler classes, progeny classes and judging of alpaca fleeces.

It may all look or sound a bit crazy if you are an outsider but the Shows are a good chance to meet some of the breeders, find out what is going on and get your eye in with alpacas.

When should we get a puppy?

Pleeeeeese, Mum and Dad! I promise to feed him and walk him and keep the yard cleaned up and everything! Please can I have a dog? Weve all heard of situations in which a child and her parents overestimate the childs ability to take responsibility for a pet, and before you know it, mum and dad are the ones feeding, walking, and cleaning up after the new pet. Pets can bring much joy and comfort to children and can even help children learn responsibility. The responsibilities of pet ownership--especially of a young pet that needs basic socialization and behavioral training--can be too large for a child to handle. Two important factors to take into consideration are the temperament of the pet and the maturity of the child. The feeding and exercise of a pet may seem easy, but often children get caught up in other activities and forget their obligations. Its important that the adults ensure, especially in the beginning, that the child is adequately caring for the pet. Dr. Ballantyne recommends that families wait until the youngest child is around five years old before acquiring a puppy. The competing demands on time and energy for raising pre-schoolers and training pets can be overwhelming, and the pet may end up being neglected. Training of pets is essential for maintaining a happy household. Behavioral problems are a leading reason that pets are relinquished to shelters, and very often the problems could have been prevented with appropriate training. Parents must model appropriate training techniques so their children learn what to do and what not to do with the pet. For example, the pets positive behaviors

should be rewarded, while unacceptable behaviors should never be reinforced. If you show your puppy that you are amused when she tugs on your pant leg, dont be surprised when the dog later destroys your good suit.

But please do not leave the training of your pet solely to your children. Raising and training a pet is a time-consuming activity. With education and patience, pet ownership can become a family affair that forges lasting bonds of love.

For more advice about children and pets, please contact your local veterinarian

Optical Collusion Donna Kendrigan and Henschke 25 June - 24 August 2011 Chris

Optical Collusion is a collection of pre-cinema optical devices, reworked with post-cinema technologies. The aesthetics of pre-cinema are placed within contemporary contexts. Tricks of perception mediated by technology are not new magic lanterns and stereoscopes were popular entertainments in the Enlightenment and Victorian eras. Artists Henschke and Kendrigan employ these old techniques to subvert current optical and imaging technologies, and vice versa with an exhibition of handson, interactive artworks.

The exhibition displays new works, funded by the Australia Council Visual Arts Board and Screen Australia. Image: Wheatstone interior view, 2010 Chamber,

Dana Ashlakoff And Where in the World 16 July 12 August 2011

Dana Ashlakoff uses found articles and items from her local area to create her body of work which she notes could come from anywhere but it comes from here. Her intention is to create connections within the Latrobe Valley. Her inspiration and visualisation is triggered by a particular quality an item may hold. Her process allows a perpetual altering of the form of meaning, in a poetic sense as much as in a formal or analytical sense.

Exhibition Opening and conversations with the artist Saturday, 23 July, 1.00pm 3.00pm. Image: Dana Ashlakoff, Seasons and Circles, date, mixed media. Collection of the artist.

TRIPOD Vs the Dragon

Tripod versus the Dragon at Latrobe Performing Arts

WHATS ON AT THE

Sci-Spy

Showing at the Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon on Tuesday 9 August from 8pm, Tripods new show takes place inside a game of Dungeons and Dragons. Featuring Tripods renowned (and hilarious) musical talents, Tripod activities science shows fun with maths displays versus the Dragon depicts Scod, Yon and Gatesy as they go head to head with their new Dungeon Master Elana. Gatesy is suspicious and reluctant - he has never played before and is not sure he wants to fly his geek flag quite so proudly - but before long he is drawn into a stupidly epic quest. Along the way we tangle with classic themes of love (she turns out to be a dragon - long story) greed (as Scod makes some dangerous pacts) and faith (as Yon prays like mad at some key moments). In the end its about not fitting in, and deciding to be okay with that. Latrobes performing arts and venues coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said that for the price of admission, the audience would get great music, big laughs and heaps of heart. This show will appeal to a very broad range of patrons who enjoy comedy, ingenuity and music. For gamers, comic book aficionados and the nerd subculture, this show will be a sure-fire hit. For anyone outside those categories, Tripods quirky and hilarious musical antics will definitely engage, Ms Roberts said. The show is on at the Latrobe Performing Arts Centre in Traralgon on Tuesday 9 August from 8pm. The bar opens at 7pm. It runs for 75 minutes and contains some coarse language. Tickets are available from the Box Office on 5176 3559.

Should I invest in a unit or house?

Choose the property investment that best suits your needs and goals Property investors are faced with an important choice: whether to purchase a house or a unit. While both options can offer excellent investment prospects they each have pros and cons that need to be assessed with your own objectives and financial circumstances in mind. Return on investment An old real estate mantra is that houses offer stronger capital growth prospects because they incorporate land which is a finite resource. Units however can also offer solid returns if selected carefully; they are also currently showing growing investment appeal as more and more Australians become attracted to inner-city living. In terms of whether a house or unit will be right for you, this really depends on the individual property itself. Houses are usually more popular with families and may attract longer term and relatively stable rental incomes. Moreover, as a family home your tenants may be more akin to showing some house pride and look after your investment. Units on the other hand may be more popular with younger people who may be less inclined to look after your property. They may also house more people than set out in the lease agreement, adding to additional wear and tear and subsequent increased maintenance costs.

Yet with units typically closer to the city centre, demand may remain strong, allowing you to keep rental rates high this particularly holds true in the current market.

These are very general guidelines so its important to assess rental prospects on a case-by-case basis, looking at factors such as location, amenities, future infrastructure plans, transport and local entertainment options.

Price point If youre on a budget units are often a more affordable choice for investors. However some well-priced homes may be available on city fringes and in the suburbs, so do your research to see whats available in the current market.

Maintenance Investing in a house will generally require more hands on time and effort. For example, as well as the house itself (which are typically larger than units) youll need to keep maintenance up on the land. Moreover, council rates and other levies may cut into your rental returns. On the flip side, units can incorporate hefty strata fees. Remember, choosing your investment property is very much an individual choice the rule of thumb is to look for quality, location and be sure to do your homework.

choosing beans, to the maintenance of your equipment etc...etc.... which is rare in this day and age. At The Bean Scene in Cinema Arcade Warragul, we pride ourselves on our customer service and our industry knowledge, and our after sales service is second to none. Our staff would be only too pleased to assist you with the purchase of a machine from our range in store. The last thing you need is to be sold a box and then be left to work out how to use it yourself. When choosing a machine consider what you want and expect out of a machine.

If you are considering purchasing a coffee machine here are a few tips to hopefully help you to make the right choice. Firstly, purchase your machine from someone in the coffee industry who knows what they are talking about and can give you the correct advice. If you speak to someone who is an expert in the coffee industry, they will be able to answer any questions you may have, and you should ask lots of questions!. You will find that they will be only too pleased to answer and make your choice of machine as simple as possible. There is a huge range of machines available on the market these days and many of them are commercial brands, so look for brands such as Bezzera, Expobar, Simonelli, Giotto, Rancilio, Wega to name a few. These machines are extremely well made, reliable and will last you for many years. The advantage of buying from a reputable person in the coffee industry is the backup service and expert after sales advice when you need it, from

1. Do you entertain a lot 2. How many coffees do you need to make at a time. 3. Will you be making mainly milk based coffees 4. How much bench space and height do you have. 5. Measure up first 6. Do you need to have a hot water arm for making long blacks or tea 7. Budget.

When deciding to purchase a machine you should, at some time, plan to purchase a grinder, whether it be at the same time or in the future. In my opinion, the grinder is every bit as important as the coffee machine. A grinder gives you contro over the grind of the coffee which directly impacts on the the taste and flavour of the coffee. It allows you to keep your coffee fresher as you can then buy your coffee as whole beans and grind as required. Nothing smells better than fresh coffee, but stale coffee smells rancid, like a dirty ashtray.

Howdy Folks! An amazing August to yall! Wow! Winter is almost ready to leave us and it is our last month to plant Bare-rooted stock... Watch for sales at your local nursery. Some folks have been asking if we are Ever going to prune our roses. You will be happy to know that it is planned for the middle of this month. The Hips are just too cute! Another reason we leave it so late is because we can do so much at the one time; not to mention that I can see the buds without specs..... First, we prune and clean up that mess. Next, we spray, if necessary, with a fungicide or insecticide. Then we feed with high quality organic slow release fertiliser, put down a good thick layer of mulch(sugar cane this time), and water it all down with seaweed. Yea! Job sorted, the lazy persons way! Now, before some of you start fidgeting,

reach up to 10 meters away. There will be no waste because any remaining spray can be poured back into its original container. Yippee!!! They have finally arrived and will eliminate 80% of your spraying time. We just love ours.... Im actually going to break down and wash my windows after we have finished the roses. Stay cosy for the rest of winter, and dont forget it is time to plant lilliums, gladioli, alstromerias, spuds, water lilies, strawberries, and, oh, so much more!

we are not suggesting that this is a gardening maxim of any sort. It just works for me in our situation. Dont worry, Be happy. A few months ago, I described the gadget we are importing from the U.S. The first job ours will have is to spray those pesky roses with white oil. The water and white oil will be blended automatically as we spray, and it can

FIJI DIVE TRIP A group of divers from SEAL Diving Services recently participated in an exciting trip to Beqa Lagoon in Fiji to undertake an amazing experience diving with sharks. The highlight of the trip was doing the five ultimate shark feed dives with 8 different species of shark. As we descended through the clear waters to the 24m landing, sharks could be seen circling below, along with hundreds of jacks, snappers and other fish species swirling around the feeding area. We were not in a cage, but situated on the reef around the perimeter of the dive site called the Arena. Anticipation builds as the feed beings. The SHARK ENCOUNTER featured multiple bull sharks (largest in the world), white tip reef sharks, black tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, lemon sharks, grey reef sharks, silvertip sharks and over 300 species of fish. To top it off the cameras and videos were clicking away as two 16 + foot tiger sharks came in for a feed. 12 year old Kelsea Timmers said It was an amazing experience; we were so close to the sharks you could really appreciate their beauty. SEAL Diving Services will be running another trip to dive with the sharks in 2012 contact the dive shop for details. PHOTOS SEAL Diving Services divers on a recent overseas trip to tropical Fiji. One of the highlights of the trip was participating in a shark feed at Beqa Lagoon with bull sharks and two magnificent tiger sharks. How do you define Happiness?

This is one of my favourite articles by author and ACT Therapist Dr Russ Harris. Check out his website www.thehappinesstrap.com Great analogy for stress busting!

When living a full life we experience a full range of human emotions. Basic human emotions such as love, joy, curiousty, fear, anger, sadness, guilt, shock and disgust. Notice that six out of these nine basic human emotions are NOT feel good emotions, yet they are feelings that we experience repeatedly, no matter how wonderful our lives may be. ACT argues that the natural state for humans is not happiness, or feeling good; rather that our feelings are like the weather, continually changing: at times very pleasant, at other times extremely unpleasant.

The inconvenient truth is that our feelings are like the weather always changing, and often unpredictable. There are cold days and hot days; rainy days and sunny days. You cant control the weather - but nor does the weather control you! No matter how bad it is, you can choose to go outside and do whatever it is you need to. On a cold day, you can wrap up warmly and walk fast. On a hot day, you can dress lightly and walk slowly. And it is much the same with our emotions. You cant stop sadness or anxiety or anger from showing up in your life but if you respond to them mindfully, you can let them come and go without a struggle, and choose how to act when they are present.

The more we can accept this reality, the more we are free to live the life we want. Instead of wasting energy trying to control how we feel, we can channel that energy into effective action doing things to improve our life for the better. So next time your feelings are running rampant, you might like to gently acknowledge this, and with a sense of humor say something like, Hmmm. Looks like bad weather today. You can play around with this concept. If youre noticing feelings of grumpiness or irritability, you might say, I can feel a storm brewing. You can use the weather as a metaphor to aid your mindfulness practice: you can watch your thoughts going past like passing clouds; you can notice sensations swirling around your body like torrents of rain.

Doing this helps you to remember that you are like the sky, and your feelings are like the weather: no matter how bad the weather, the sky cannot be harmed by it and sooner or later, the weather always changes

World Ranger Day

World Ranger Day is celebrated every year on July 31 to acknowledge the work that rangers do as protectors of parks and the environment. For Parks Victoria its an opportunity to publicly thank all its rangers for their important work. Rangers are not only involved with protecting the environment, but work closely with their local communities and are often the connection between the two. They work with thousands of volunteers, support community projects, and take part in locally events and activities. Parks Victoria has hundred of rangers across the state taking on a huge variety of tasks. These range from daily handson maintenance work, planning management strategies, pest & weed control, compliance, dealing with impacts from flood and fires to running childrens holiday activities. Parks Victoria is also delighted to be able to attract a diversified workforce to the profession as a Park Ranger which gives the broader

team a wider perspective on dealing with natural and cultural values within our parks.

Parks Victoria Acting Chief Ranger- West Gippsland Mr Roger Fenwick said that he is fortunate to have an exceptional team of rangers working within his team who have to manage both land and marine based parks.
