Introduction:
Parallel developments in areas of agile system in manufacturing/service and supply chain management have led to the introduction of an agile supply chain concept. To achieve highest level of customer satisfaction at lowest cost, companies have adopted supply chain management. This includes all functions involved in receiving and filling a customer request. In principle, the objective of every supply chain is to maximise the overall value generated. This module reviews nature, role and contribution of supply chain management and its application to industrial supply chains. It equips students with an understanding from both customer and supplier perspectives and aims to prepare them for starting a managerial role within an industrial supply organisation. Part A deals with a debate on managing global supply chains. Part B emphasises on break through contributions of supply chain management with respect to industrial application. Part C embarks on different approaches to model supply chain using quantitative and qualitative methods.

Part A Preamble

30 Marks

Information Technology (IT) has become a vital element for companies to manage supply chains resulting from globalisation. Companies have been using technology service providers for specific market development to sustain competition. Leading FMCG companies have been using IT to minimise inventory both in supply and demand chain warehouses to improve competitiveness. In addition, many consumer insights have been captured with respect to regional segmentation. On the contrary, companies anxious to improve their competitiveness have also emphasised on research-based innovation models to design, implement and test supply chain solutions along with IT. However companies using mathematical modelling approach and extended co-creation between organisations have led to the development of innovative and integrated supply chains.

Problem Statement Research-based innovative models are essential for managing complex global supply chains. Critically debate and justify arguments. a. Support your opinion with case studies, preferably from Indian companies (Answer should be limited to three A4 - pages)

Part B
(30 Marks) 1. Take a company* and study the role of SCM under the following context: a. Estimate the demand from customers in the Industry b. Translate above to deliverable quantities and capturing market share c. Breakdown what is manufactured in to key parts which are worthwhile? d. Take decision on what should be made in-house? what should be sourced out? e. Is vendor base restricted to India or abroad? f. Role of SCM itself in each of the above * Company should be selected in consultation with the module leader.

Part C
(30 Marks) Prelude Managers need both qualitative and quantitative skills to achieve superior supply chain performance. Qualitative decisions tend to be intuitive and have led to great success for many entrepreneurs, but are also prone for avoidable gross failures. On the contrary, quantitative approaches to decision making size up the scenario with the available data and would tell you a safe route to reasonable profits. In the present day context of vast computing facilities, analytical models are easily available and hence have become order of the day. A successful manager needs to have intuitive skills as well as analytical ability. This applies to supply chain management as well. 1. Carry out research using books, web resources and use your networking ability to gather details of a company* and design the supply chain network by linking SCM to other disciplines in the loop. The network design should be analysed with respect to effectiveness and responsiveness identifying strategic, tactical and operational issues. a. Any two mathematical models has to be applied for modelling supply chain * Company should be selected in consultation with the module leader.
