INTRODUCTION
In todays competitive environment, time plays an important role. All the world moves forward on the tick tick of clocks. A famous proverb time once lost cannot be recovered says it all. Time is the biggest uncontrollable, though important factors in the hands of human beings. Considering the importance of time, human being have always tried to control; it. But a small step has been achieved by measuring time. There is a well known proverb that Time and tide wait for none. In modern world time has become the most precious thing. Today everybody feels shortage of time and everybody tries to run with the time, it becomes necessary to measure it. Their measurements are cloaks and watches. Thus clocks and watches have become necessary. The importance of diminished as watches and clocks make the whole world move on time.

HISTORY & DEVELOPMENT OF COMPANY


Ajanta Quartz was established in 1971 by a person named Mr. O.R.Patel with the support of his son Mr. Pravinbhai O. Patel which is situated at Morbi, Rajkot district, Gujarat which is known as Switzerland of India as it is very famous for manufacturing of wall clock. Shri O.R.Patel has realized the demand for the potential market for wall clocks which provide him to start Ajanta Transistor Clock mfg. co. Initially they started production of 15-20 mechanical wall clocks per day by 22 workers with initial investment of Rs.180000. In 1978, with the advent of striking winding clocks, the started making striking winding clock. In the year 1982, ORPAT started manufacturing one day Alarm time pieces. All these clocks were manufacturing up to the year 1987. In the year 1988, QUARTZ Revolution came into the world. In order to remain astride with the latest development, the companys chairman Mr. O.R.Patel went to Japan, Taiwan and Hong and brought the QUARTZ technology to India. In the year 1990, ORPAT was the first Indian company to manufacture musical clocks. Today, ORPAT is no longer manufacturing transistor clocks. Now it uses the latest technology to manufacturing Quartz clocks. In the year 1994, the company has entered in the manufacturing of electronic calculators and Quartz Time Pieces. The annual turnover of Ajanta Ltd. exceeds 200 crores. It has earned the unique distinction of becoming the largest manufacturing of Quartz clocks not only in India but also in the world. The companys shared in Quartz clocks in India is about 70%.

ELLORA TIME LTD., more known by the brand AJANTA as well as ORPAT, situated in Morbi, Gujarat, has a built-up area of 1200000 sq. ft. The company is currently providing employment opportunities about 6000 workers (90% female). This very large volume of infrastructure helped the company in achieving big goals since years. And now the company stands on a strong group and has the credit of the WORLDS LARGEST CLOCK MANUFACTURER as well as only company in India that Manufacturers calculator and Educational toys and the leader in telephone manufacturing. With the dedication, commitment and hard work the company has a wide range of products in different segments. Clocks, Telephones, Calculators, Timepieces and Educational toys are just to name a few. INTRODUCTION
Production is the basic activity of all industrial units. All other activities revolve around this activity. The end-product of the production activity is the creation of goods and services for the satisfaction of human wants. The production activity is nothing but the step-by-step conversion of one form of materials into another either chemically or mechanically. The basic input of the production processes are men, machine, plant, services and methods. It should be noted that finished products of one manufacturing unit does not always furnish a read-made product for the ultimate consumption. In a chain of manufacturing activities, the finished product of the processor sometimes becomes the raw material for the other manufacturing firms falling next in sequence. Production management is the process of planning, organizing, directing, and controlling the activities of the production function. Producing function is the conversion of raw material into finished products. It is concerned with the activities which converts inputs into outputs. The inputs are various resources like raw material, men, machine, method, etc. and outputs are goods and services. The word production is often used to mean the same as manufacturer. In other to go through a process of manufacturing itself, we need basically three things: someone to do the job, his equipments and the necessary materials. To run production, we require service activities which make sure that the manufacturing activity can go on and control to make sure that it goes the right direction.

Location of the any unit or firm is a main factor which is directly concerned with success or failure any business or company. Location plays a very vital role in the life of company and also in the development of the here by villages, states or country. Ajanta Quartz Ltd. Orpat Industrial Estate, Rajkot Highway, Morbi 363 641 Gujarat (India). Company is purchasing its raw material from Vishakhapattanm (A.P.) & Mumbai (Maharashtra) and also from foreign countries such as Japan and Germany. They do not have nearness for raw material but they never find shortage of raw materials because of their efficient preplanning for requirement of material. Company has got availability of labor from near by villages. Orpat group take financial help from SBS Morbi which is near from the location. Orpat sends its products by road in India and by water to other countries. Orpat has its own 45 trucks for transportation.

RAW MATERIAL & AVAILABILITY


Raw material is the most important thing in manufacturing firm. Without raw material production process cannot be possible. Therefore we can say that raw material is the basic essential and fundamental thing for preparing the product. Main raw material used in the company for manufacturing of clocks, calculators, timepieces and telephone are: Plastic Metal Glasses All electronic items Papers Plastic: Plastic is the basic raw material required for manufacturing clocks. It is required in making the frames of the clocks. Orpat uses Meg-100 grade of hips. This material is basically purchased from Hindustan Polymer at Mumbai and Hindustan Polymer at Vishakhapattanam. Glasses: Glasses are required for its shape so they purchase big sheets of glasses and than cut it in required shapes in factory. They purchase this glass sheet from Modi Glass (Ankleshwar), Gujarat Gardin (Ankleshwar), Triveni Glass (Ahmedabad), and Haryana Glass sheet (Haryana). Paper: A specific type of papers is used to produce caster of different colors to the digit of different colors to the digit of clocks. The Orpat group of industries purchases this particular type of paper from Garluar Polymer. They also import from foreign countries like U.K., Japan and Germany.

PRDUCTION CAPACITY
Production capacity means the capacity of the company to produce the goods within certain period of time. Initially Orpat started production of 15 to 20 mechanical wall clocks per day but in the year 2001-02 they make a world record of producing 12541602 clocks and time pieces. And in the year 2002-03 they made another record of manufacturing 13292872 clocks and timepieces. QUALITY MAINTAIN
Quality of the product is most important factor for every manufacturing company and it is depend upon raw material which is use in manufacturing of products. Orpat group can maintain quality as follow:

They are using quartz crystal +/- 8PPM, while their competitors are using +/- 20PPM or 30PPM. Therefore, the accuracy of timing in Ajanta quartz movement is much better than others.

Ajanta quartz movement is being assumed at dust proof environment. Therefore, the durability of the movement is better than others. All the gears in Ajanta quartz movement are being made polyacetal of higher grade. Therefore, the durability of the movement is better than others.

The quality checking of the Ajanta quartz movement is being made in three stages. (Movement manufacturing stage and clock assembling stage.)

The clock cabinets of Ajanta quartz are being manufactured from virgin polyester of high impact is better than others.

PROCESS OF PRODUCTION

Injection Molding Department: The process for manufacturing any clocks starts from this section. Here the base or the frame of the clocks is manufactured. Raw material, which is required to make these frames, is polystyrene. In this department clocks cabinet are manufactured. Clocks cabinets are plastic molded parts, which are manufactured by using Injection Molding process. The cabinets are manufactured with the help of Windsor machines, which are purchased from Windsor India Ltd. In this stage plastic granules are put into big containers from which they go into machine through big pieces. After going into machines the granules are converted into liquid comes into the machine which processes the dye. After 35 seconds this turned into the shape due to healing effect. ORPAT has installed 130 injection molding machines. Each coasting about 50 lacks. Each machine has get capacity of producing 4000 pieces per day but it mostly depend upon the model & size of the product. Cabinet Cutting Machine: The cabinet framed in injection molding department is then brought to cabinet cutting section and here the cabinet is turned in various shapes to remove unwanted parts and to make the clocks of different shape and style. The approximate speed or capacity of this department is around 3500 pieces per day. Buff & Cleaning Department: The cabinet is now brought to the buff and cleaning department. In this section, basically all the effects are made to make every piece shined. The descent luster is provided to these cabinets and every cabinet is then cleaned properly in order to give it shine. Workers wear mask on their face while doing this process to protect them.

Hat Stamping Department-1:

A specific type of paper is used to provide luster of color to the digit of the clocks. It is performed in this hat stamping department with the help of Hydraulic machine. Hat Stamping Department-2: The different between these two departments is the pressure provided in the previous department is with Hydraulic machine and in this department it is provided with Roller Machine. The hydraulic machine is used to give shining to the color of digits of the clocks with roller machine is used for surface and boarders of the clocks with roller machine is used for surface and boarders of the clocks. ORPAT clocks are provided in 6 standard colors, i.e. ivory, black, brown, cherry red, green and white. The work performed by this machine is very high which is Rs.20 lacks per machine where as the cost of hydraulic machine is about Rs.50000 each. Glass Cutting Department: In glass cutting department the glasses are purchased from Hariyana, Ankleshwar and Ahmedabad etc. the glasses are purchased in big sheets and these sheets are cut down according to the different size and different shapes of clocks. The sheets of glasses are cut down either through automatic machines or through manual machines. In an automatic machine glass is put under the machine is revolves and cuts the glass. Then this glass is cleaned by water and arranged one by one. In manual machine, the difference is only that automatic machine revolves automatically while manual machine have to be revolved by hand. Further process is the same as in the case of automatic machine. During this process glass remain -

after cutting which is goes in wastage. This is either used for the reproduction of glass or used in manufacturing wristwatches. Electronic Department: In this department all the electronic parts in the clocks is imported and assembled here on very large scale. These part are generally imported from scientifically advance countries such as Japan, Germany and China etc. I.C. Boarding Selection: ORPAT group of industries is manufacturing all I.C. i.e. Indicate Circuit component of the clock. In this section, expert qualified staff is appointed; no outsiders are allowed to enter inside. ORPAT group of industries gives training to all its workers to work in this section and only the qualified workers are in this section. Assembling Department: In this department workers assemble all the parts of the clock and complete clock is made ready for packing. Then it is sent to girls for packing. Then it is send to girls who stick golden colored foil on the number to make them decorative and effective. They first join hour hand, minute hand and after second hand. They fixed hand through nuts. Then girls spray air to clean the clocks. Then the glass, which is cut down in glass cutting department, is fit on the cabinet lastly. Finally the clocks are put into boxes and plastic bags.

PACKING DEPARTMENT
A good package is the representation of the artistic combination of the designers creative skills and the product and the marketing and sales knowledge of the manufacturers management team. The development of packaging is the sum total of the talents of the designer, the researcher, the technician, the advertising man, the marketing expert, the sales department and the top management packing must be attractive so that it attract or catches the eye of the customers. In the present time packaging had become a potential marketing tool. The products of ORPAT are packed in primary package in the glass. This covers and protects them from damage and dust. The second packing is the plastic bags or sponge bags, which protects the whole product from breakage. Then different products are packed in different boxes. There are about 20 boxes of clocks packed up in one cartoon. After packing, every information regarding clocks is given on the boxes like color, model, number etc. Finally those boxes become ready for dispatch. When in other products like calculators, telephone, home appliances and CFL are packed only in simple boxes and all important information is printed on the boxes. Company spends 4% of gross profit for packing to reduce wastage.

Design reflects the outlook & features of the product which makes it different from other products. Designing a product is a specialized job. Various include products are to be kept in mind while designing a product.
