PART I NAVIGATION
1. Routes selected proved to be well planned ..
2. Navigation was good, Loran and celestial being used in
conjunction to enable all crews to make landrall within a lO-mile
area.
3. Mining:
a. Visibility over the targets was good, with cloud cover-
age being zero to 2/10.
b. Initial and aioing points were well selected and could
be picked up in the radar scope. The only ccmpLe.int reported uas
trOll! 1 Group stated that its initiel point of Mine Field lig
was dUficult to locate.
c. The I:l8jadty of aircraft laid their mines by radar.
Radar equiilllent worked sotisfactorily.
d. Encb aircraft assigned an indiTidual aiJ:l.ing point
as deseri bed in the field order ..
e. Malfum:tions:
(1) 6th Bomb Group:
(a) Ale ,667 _ Rear banb doors did not open; last
3 mines were salvoed 45 aeconds later on primary target.
(b) A/c 3887 _ Early return due to engine failure;
all 6 mines were jettisoned in prescribed area.
(e) Ale 4Tl6 All 6 mines were salvoed where
tirst mine was scheduled to be loid. This was a personnel errar;

(b) Ale 769 - Engine failure resulted in jettisoning

S!CTIon A - tlNINO S;SytTS
1. The following report i8 submitted in accordance with War
Department letter, AG 476.1 (20 October 1943),
a. The charts folloil'ing this seetion shaw the poeitioDs
or all mines planted in this operation. The preparation or individ-
ual nines in a string t70S specified in annex 2 to Field Order 17.
A legend on these eha:rts further indicates the method of plotting
so as to differentiate bet'C'eD positions established by radar scope
photograJits. by the navige.tor, or by the assumption that the er5
planted cines as briefed (where no other data vas avnilable). Posi-
tions established by radar scope photographs were believed accurate
to 1/2 ndle. and those by the navigator il'ere between 1/2 and 1 miloJ
there \'las no way of estimating the eccurney of the other POSitiOM.
b. The numbe.r of B-29 aircraft scheduled for this operation
was 102. Of these. 8 foiled to take orr; 7 additional aircraft did
not plant their mines in primary or secordary areas. One of the
latter crashed "hen attempting to return to base.
c. The nark!! and oodifications of all nines planted in thia
operation ere listed. in Table I, Section B. vhile those jettisoned
or not planted in primary target area. are shoun in Table II in the
same section. A total of 825 mines of all types vas planted in
fields Love. ]ig, Itee. and ROOER (primnry target for 607 mines and
secondary target for 18 fuines). or thcec, 210 were Mark 25 and 615
were Mark or ,6.1 mines. The distribution was apprcu;.:1.n'B'tely

1. Critique of lIinetield,,-:
(1) Pield Love (!lIstern approach to MoJi.shimonoeeld): Tbe
bee' ave:ilable data on t he final posi tiona of all mines planted in tbis
field are plottEd on a char\ in Section B. In general, the pattern 'loa
08 briefed. tlith the aecuracy as con1'in:led by radar scope photography
being in this field. Only 1 of the .5 aircrott \hot:tailed
to reach tbe terect area was scheduled to mine the I:lt11n ehannel. The
areas to both sides of the min channel vere well covered, am the
planned density in the established shipping lane was attained.
(2) Field rig (Northern approaeh to Hl.rosh1mo. and lWre);
Four orthe 1..4 aircraft SCheduled to IiJrnethis field tailed to reach the
target orea, am therefore the resulting pattern did not Ca::1pletoly
cover the strait betvoen Tsub. Sh1r.e. !Uld Nishina::d Sbi.ce. The field
as laid is a strong attrition field that extend enecy swoeping

(4) Field Roger (Approach to Sasebo); This field lJas

3. CONCLUSIONS AND ANALYSIS:
a. The pIn-pointing of any intercept was not accomplished due to
lack of D/F'lnl; equipment. The coordinate. given were the pos! tions of &.ir-
craf't at point of intercept and were only suspected lOCations obtained
from the proximity ot the route flown and preTlous intercepts of similar
nature in the same general area.
b. The lack of gun-laying and searchlight radar control signals
&greed with observations of the non of'fective searChlights and meager
to moderate, inJ,ccurate to accurate flak.
c. Numerous signals with early warning characteristics were
heard in the 74-79mc band. This indicmted the Mark CHI equipment was
ecployed in this area.
d. It was suspected that the Al signal characteristics in-
tercepted on this mission tended to give more proof that previous .sim-
ilar intercepts were from riight_fighters. The intercept on this miuion,
however, 'Was not correlated with any fighter activity.
